- Former Geto Boys member, Willie D sat down with VladTV to talk about his upbringing and his final decision to give up a potential career in boxing for a career in rap. Although most may know his time as a rapper, Willie says growing up he discovered his talent as a young fighter when he fought one of the best fighters and later gained his first KO a couple weeks later.
While very successful in the ring, he reveals that his fights in school later got him kicked out the school district two months before graduating. Aside from being a golden gloves champ, he says he dabbled in robbery before making a firm decision to get into rapping and vowed to giving his kids the best so they wouldn't encounter what hes been through.

I agree with what he said about being "prepared" to have kids, because the TRUTH is, many people are NOT prepared to have kids when they do. And what ends up happening is that these kids suffer and they go without or have to receive "hand me downs" because mama/daddy did not plan to have kids, and daddy ends up leaving due to the unexpected pressure of parent hood. Sadly, this will not get better.

I have to say, I'm surprised at how articulate he is. Just his vocabulary. Not to mention the whole context of the things he's saying and the understanding he's exhibiting.
I was a teenager during the golden age and an avid fan of east and west coast(with south just starting to get some foothold), and I would've definitely owed "a cultural thing" to what I expected from a rapper when it comes to dialogue - i.e. at a lower level than this. Back then though, they were maintaining reputation. The interviews rarely showed deeper motivations. It was business - but of course under the auspices of gritty, real-world expression, and that authentic connection with the underbelly of society. Now he's past that.
It's mournful that he can only get this deep with the audience so far after the fact - and in lower numbers...especially among younger folks that just aren't familiar and don't have him on their radar. The ones that need to hear this stuff the most. I might've never even watched this video except on the whim of a rap history-rabbit hole that I just happened to have started down. But at least this channel has some significant reach.
But vis-a-vis my surprise at his clarity, what would the response be? "Just goes to show..."
