Great tips! Really helpful! I bought the €150 student flute from Thomann as a starting one, not knowing anything about playing flute. My teacher told me afterwards it was okay to start with but I might want a better one after playing for about a year. I’m still using it and it’s completely fine to learn with, but when I played the emerson flute from my sister in law I could really hear a BIG difference. The sound was so much brighter! Now after 6 months of playing I’m looking for a new one and trying to decide if I should go for open holes or not.

That's awesome to hear your flute was a good flute to start off with! Definitely try a few different flutes out before purchasing so you can hear the difference between brands and what you prefer. Hope it works out well! 😊

An inexpensive flute may be good to get you started but eventually it will hold you back for improving due the its limitations.

My flute teacher didn't think so. He said he went very far on a flute that wasn't as good as my first flute.
I even bought a flute for £50 off ebay, while mine was being serviced. The foot joint kept falling off 😳. But at least it allowed me to practice.
I wouldn't recommend buying off ebay. I got lucky. 😎

Very true. Most people will outgrow a student flute within a couple of years (many sooner). A good step-up is the better option. For around 1,500 dollars you can get some decent flutes with nice options that would be hard for an amateur to outgrow. I play a Haynes, but I have a Di Zhao 500 series for a backup and it is actually pretty decent.

Hi Edi, Yep I definitely agree! (as long as it actually works!) 😂

    • @1Flyingfist

Just out of interest to you though? 🤔 When I was looking for one, there were youtube videos claiming that £1000 flutes were "cheap".
Well yeah, if you're comparing them to top end £15000 silver and gold flutes. But £1000 is still around twice the price that I paid for mine and that bought a flute better than the one that my teacher had been performing with...
It's not an easy decision, especially if you can't try a whole load of flutes first.

I bought a cheap flute from ebay (Glory closed hole) and upgraded to a Yamaha 385 within a month. It's lovely, though I have to use plugs so far. I'm going back to the flute after 20 years.

Start of this year i got myself an Altus 907 of Ebay. It was quiet cheap but i had to make a full service after half a year. In the end it was still 1000€ cheaper then new, but i wouldn't have bought it, if i knew it had to go into service so early.

    • @JaneFluteSchool
      @JaneFluteSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sometimes getting a cheaper flute isn't worth it in the long run, and some repairers won't repair it if it is too far gone (the repair might cost more than the flute itself!)
I hope your Altus flute is playing well after its service! 😀

Yamaha took the split E mechanism off of the YFL 222. The Older model 212 and 221 had split E. They even took it off the 262 intermediate model selling at $1533. Saw your video on split E mechanism. Would you know of any reason to take it off except to save money? Was in the process of buying a 222. Thank you

One of my students was able to upgrade her flute to a Muramatsu Ex when she was about grade 6 level. She is now a professional flute player and still uses her Muramatsu flute. So it is definitely a personal choice but if you have the finances and are really passionate about flute, I would go for it! I also play on a Muramatsu flute. They are lovely! 😊

I know a lady that bought a flute online from China and it only cost her $120 USD. After two weeks of use, the parts of the flute started to separate. The repairman told her that he would not touch that #$%^^& with a ten-foot pole! She was devastated because she bought it for her daughter. He told her that he has several flutes (used and new) that she could rent to buy. I warned her about those sites on the internet that are just out to make money and nothing more. If it is too good to be true, it usually is!

Haven't really had time to practice tho ._. Living in an apartment, alongside not being able to drive to the park has had limitations. Used to be able to play in middle/high school but it's been a long, long while lol.

My husband bought me an "upgrade" for my birthday. It was just over 300, and the name is Jean Paul. I honestly don't know if it's a good brand or not. Just what we could afford. My Student flute is a Gemeinhardt, and I feel, since I've not played it...20 plus years...🫣...I have to relearn. We bought jean paul because we saw it played up against a 10k flute in a different youtube channel, called The Flute Channel.... Now I'm worried. 😶 I hope it's just me right now...❤
