Magnifique première vidéo. Et bravo pour l'expertise des instruments de musique. 3:22 if you guys can’t tell, the expensive flute is slightly longer because there an extra key on the foot joint. The B foot joint is used for an extra low note and to make the higher notes like high C and D, speak easier.
Very worth mentioning as well - the cheaper a flute is, the more likely a repairer won't want to touch it, as adjustments won't hold and the repair will possibly end up costing more than the instrument. Whereas, the better the flute, the easier it is to repair, and to keep it playing for a lifetime!
@@PiggycenteThese low-cost instruments are very difficult to repair to everyone's satisfaction. The last thing a technician wants is for someone to be dissatisfied with his/her work and bad-mouth the repair or repair staff. Also, as mentioned above, repair/regulation costs can very quickly outstrip the cost of the instrument, leaving the purchaser/owner confused and disappointed. @@PiggycenteGiven their poor construction, cheaper flutes can often be frustrating and unrewarding, and are often not worth the time of a decent repairer. @@PiggycenteRepirer Here! I learnt how to repair on cheap instruments like Elkhart and because of how they’re made, as @flutetree said, they don’t hold a repair and then that’s our name as a repairer being tarnished. As a repairer we rely mainly on word of mouth, traditional marketing methods do not work. Also, because the instruments metal etc is much more bendier because it doesn’t have the tensile strength it’s really hard to get a good padding and take us much much longer than it would on something like a Yamaha 211 and so we aren’t working cost efficiently. I would be very interested in making a collaboration with @JasmineChoi going into further detail of what makes a cheap flute cheaper. However, I am English so it would need to be a video call if she was up for it! I love these kinds of videos because a master of anything can make the lowest level of their craft sound good, but the amount of effort needed will make a beginner go crazy in a short amount of time. It’s important to acknowledge this with students.
Pro horn player here. I knew it!!!! The clicking, amount of effort I could see in your face, and the difference in the richness of sound gave it away. To the untrained ear, I could see how people couldn’t tell a difference. I’ll have you do this with my beginner horn and my current double horn.
I’m so glad you made this video! I would love if you made more TH-cam style videos like this. You are an amazing flutist and definitely one of my favorites!
THE QUALLTY of the 69$ flute is so good i thought its the real one but after i did saw that you were able to do a little more accurate in 50k one so i went with the best quality i heard instead of better accurately
The keys' sounds allowed me to guess which flute was the Amazon one ☺ But it's nice that good entry level flutes are not terribly expensive. Great video 🥰
Interesting! One thing I’ve noticed in this and similar videos, is when pro musicians play different tier instruments, the difference of sounds quality isn’t that crazy. But when I upgraded my flute from a 500 to a 3000 euro model, the improvement in sound seamed waaaay more massive to me. I almost think that upgrading instruments has more impact on the growth of a student. While a pro can make any instrument sound amazing. What do you think Jasmine?
Thanks for this comment! My opinion in this video was that if anyone buys this flute and starts learning, it’ll get them a good first year. Then it’s time to move on to the next flute (because it’s probably not repairable)..!
I think the most of important matter for a cheaper instrument, is to sound the right pitch. Once it can sound the right pitch, since is a cheaper instrument the sound quality doesn't matter at this point. Even the better player can make cheap instrument sound good, because they have perfect techniques, power and control. Therefore, beginner should focus on these skills for improvement. I have heard good players make cheap guitar sound good, cheap violin sound good.
I was looking for some pure sounds and your video came up. Thank you for sharing. I wonder if some superfine sandpaper might help with cork and joints in a cheap flute. Your ability to produce such clear sound switching from a brand new instrument to one you are familiar with is amazing. These AIs they talk about, it is the human that ultimately brings value to that instrument. Richard Collins, The Internet Foundation
This is a great video! I like how you mention that you can work to make the $69 flute sound really good. I mostly heard the difference as slightly more airiness, random air puffs, and very loud key sounds. The main thing I would worry about the flute from amazon is that it might break down more easily and a repairman would find it very difficult to repair.
True, that said for $69 you could get one of these once a week, throw them away for 14 years straight instead of getting a $50,000 instrument. Obviously the playability should be good enough not to frustrate the learning process.
I also play flute. I just upgraded two years ago to a Yamaha allegro. My first flute which I still have is Gemeinhart and it plays beautifully but I can't do as much dynamic variation because it is older and harder to play. I did try a newer Gemeinhart out when we were trying to figure out what I was upgrading to but I personally preferred the Yamaha more.
Amazing video Jasmine! It's a great start do doing TH-cam videos. You've helped my flute progress so much and it's great to see you making these casual videos!
I knew flute 1 was the cheaper one from the first playing because I heard the clacking of the keys but honestly, I could've been fooled if I wasn't paying attention cuz you make it sound so great😅
Immediately I noticed that Flute 1 was the cheap flute, but the difference is minor. My first flute was an Artley flute, paid a $150 dollars for it used, and it has a very good sound, they don't make those anymore. My second flute is a professional flute, a Yamaha 581, it's $4,000 new, but I paid $1,400 for it on an auction on eBay. I find both flutes equally great.
Thank you for this simple and straightforward explanation. I have that $69 type of flute, it's just like you said, I have to press it very hard for the tone to sound properly 😞, I just play it for fun. Not sure if it's diy adjustable.
I was certainly stunned by the similarity in tone, of course other things make it easy to distinguish them, but the tone alone was very, very good for the price on el cheapo
I've heard that the main issue with the Amazon instruments is that they just don't last and you'd usually have to replace them within a year, because they're basically unrepairable. I've also found used student Gemeinhardt flutes for the same $70 price point as this, they're certainly not in brand new condition but they work just as well
Mechanical engineering and mass production made it easy to build a descend instrument for a ridiculous price. Imagine spend 69$ on an instrument and 49.931$ in professional training.
I immediately guessed which one was the cheap one because it is the same sound I hear when I play my flute, it bothers me a lot because when I record videos playing it you always hear the keys 😮💨😮💨
Thank you, it’s nice you are talking about your instrument, what kind of head of flute are you using? Can you explain the difference between the difference head. Thank you.
I try to listen to this clip by Onkyo speaker but it still difficult to guess(you are very professional so you can play any flute good), maybe player can feel how difference about both flute. I play can play the flute and I can feel how difference about the tone color of any brand. Now my flute is Sankyo Etude(Silver head), I like it much more my last flute.(Miyazawa Atelier II solid silver). Thank you for this clip.
I got. Both of them right because the sound of the keys were very noisy on the cheaper one I tried a trumpet on Amazon and my trumpet and the one off amazon was pretty good but their were sone things wrong with the valves and the tubing 😢
You should practice the scales with the $69 flute to see how much difference you feel between one and the other, at first they sound the same, but coming from you any PVC tube sounds wonderful
I wonder how it compares to more expensive student flutes like my Gemeinhardt 2SP. Only other one I played before was a Nuvo 2.0 which is made of plastic so very different. I love my Nuvo because I can take it camping with me but it has a tendency to skew flat and the tone is nowhere near the same as the 2SP. I find the 2SP easier to play in general. The price of the Gemeinhardt is a bit high though for people who aren't sure yet though.
I was thinking of buying the $69 Amazon flute, but after you pointed out the noise from pressing the keys, I have serious doubts... Thanks for the alert.
Thank you! 🥰I have a flute for 300 dollars and it has 2 minuses, it doesn’t have the perfect tone and I don’t know how to tune it (although that might be the problem). And it’s darkened, I hope it doesn’t break quickly. 😃
I have an Easter, which is also a cheap flute from Amazon, at first the keys made noise. I've had it for a month and a half and the noise has almost completely disappeared, you can barely hear it. I think the noise is because it's new. Mine is already starting to wear out in the area where it touches the lips and some keys. I don't know if it will last me 2 years, and I don't even know how long I should use a flute like this.
Musical stranger here, I knew the first one was 69$ because I could hear wind wisps, sound was dirty, I don't play or sing but I have very good ears from not being able to see well. I love this content, it keeps my ears and mind sharp.
i got a cheap china brand flute when i started learning flute, about $150, the keys do not work properly after half year and the maintenance fee is about $120..so i bought a yamaha for about $800, i use it for three years and it still works fine..
Great video 2x👍 I guess we cant all afford a $50,000 flute but we can mostly afford the other. It might be OK for child to see if they want to learn the flute for a couple pf year or so, the sad bit would be it costs more to service than buy a new one. I bought a used Pearl solid silver instrument, you can get more for your money just buy from a reputable source.
Great video with so many good quotes that can inspire me to practice and keep continuing!!!! (what was the fork on the table that moved foward afterward with some piece of white)just curious haha
I'm sure that a bit of grease and some dampening rings would make that 69usd flute play just like that 50k one...I said play and not sound because both already sounds exactly the same 😅
Very interesting. I still have my 6th grade beginners flute, and over the years got fairly accomplished. fast forward 40 years later I have played it with many other flute friends-- the tone was always just as good or better than some of my friends "expensive flutes".
Thank you Jasmine for pointing out that practice is important and the key. Then upgrade as you improve. Not many have the privilege to double digit thousands of dollars on an instrument. All they can do is get what they can afford. I live in poverty and I can only afford the "cheap" instrument. I say it isn't about how much you spend, it's your skill set. Sure expensive instruments may be easier to play, but again, not everyone has the luxury.
This nicely demonstrates that the flute material has no bearing on the timbre. There was an interesting comparison done between different flutes (nickel, silver, gold, platinum) each played by several professional flautists. The flautists sounded different from each other but sounded like themselves, regardless of the material.
As a singer, The $69 sounds like I just woke up. The $50000 sounds like I had 6 months of good training, so my body health is perfect. Then All my mood can be focused on my presentation of the music, not adjusting my quality in a physical way.
An expert player can make a less expensive instrument sound amazing in some cases, as we see here. Only the player knows how much harder it is to play the cheap one. It was said of the master violinist Fritz Kreisler that he could make any violin sound gorgeous. Correspondingly, if I were to play these exact some flutes, they would both sound like toys.
Love your Video, Jasmine!.....It just goes to show you how a Pro level Flutist (Jasmine) can make anything sound good....I do like your gold flute better, though...lol
I’m a new repairer and specialise in Flutes (I play also). I would love to collaborate on a follow up on this video speaking about what exactly makes a flute more expensive and why the Amazon flutes are so bad Like if you would like to see this so @JasmineChoi has a better chance at seeing this :)
For me, the 1ra is clearly the cheapest flute. Rougher sound, less round and with less body, with less harmonics. Mechanically, you hear more keys clicking and delays in closing them.
Overall, they sounded similar, but I could tell the expensive one as several of the notes through the middle of the bars you played sounded smoother. Likely related to that sandpaper thing you mentioned at the start?
I just got a new flute to replace my dear old Armstrong (bought it used back in 2000!!) and my new flute is an Altus. The effort I used to have to put in to changing registers, and the constant difficulties in navigating fast passages is gone. I feel like I am cheating because stuff that used to be hard is so easy now!! You definitely get what you pay for.
Great comparison video, Dear Jasmine! Listening On my cell phone I could not identify the flutes. I thought the first one sounded great! I think every flute sounds great with our delightful Jasmine playing it!!! Have a great weekend!!! 💖💖💖🥰😉😉😉
I never played flute, listened to flute and am on my tablet speakers… under those conditions I found the first one to be better. I’ll give it another try on my pc with a soundboard and good headphones tomorrow XDD

It might be OK for child to see if they want to learn the flute for a couple pf year or so, the sad bit would be it costs more to service than buy a new one.
I bought a used Pearl solid silver instrument, you can get more for your money just buy from a reputable source.
Fun video! I prefer my Powell, thank you!
很厲害的演奏家不論樂器的價值其實都能夠吹出不錯的音色~像您就是個厲害的演奏家~
Great video with so many good quotes that can inspire me to practice and keep continuing!!!! (what was the fork on the table that moved foward afterward with some piece of white)just curious haha
If you could make more of these fun videos, it would be awesome!
Good to know! Thanks for the encouragement;)
The keys are so much quieter on your flute. That was the giveaway for me.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This nicely demonstrates that the flute material has no bearing on the timbre. There was an interesting comparison done between different flutes (nickel, silver, gold, platinum) each played by several professional flautists. The flautists sounded different from each other but sounded like themselves, regardless of the material.
As a singer, The $69 sounds like I just woke up. The $50000 sounds like I had 6 months of good training, so my body health is perfect. Then All my mood can be focused on my presentation of the music, not adjusting my quality in a physical way.
That background set-up looks familiar 🤔
😂😂😂 good catch🤭
🫣😅
As a recording engineer, the noise from the keys would drive me insane! :)
I would love to collaborate on a follow up on this video speaking about what exactly makes a flute more expensive and why the Amazon flutes are so bad
Like if you would like to see this so @JasmineChoi has a better chance at seeing this :)
4:15 thats how i could tell it was the cheap one because i could here the keys being pressed 😂
TONIC MENTIONED ‼️
hello Jasmine!! I am a new fan of yours. My daugher is a young flutist! we are wondering, will you be coming to Greece for a concert????????
Hopefully soon again!
Jasmine looks so cute 😭 Fits the cute characters on Tonic!
It's amazing how good such an inexpensive instrument can sound. I couldn't do that with $69 bassoon, nor a $690 one!
For me, the 1ra is clearly the cheapest flute. Rougher sound, less round and with less body, with less harmonics. Mechanically, you hear more keys clicking and delays in closing them.
Yes, the first one sounds so hollow and can hear the keys clicking
Overall, they sounded similar, but I could tell the expensive one as several of the notes through the middle of the bars you played sounded smoother. Likely related to that sandpaper thing you mentioned at the start?
I just got a new flute to replace my dear old Armstrong (bought it used back in 2000!!) and my new flute is an Altus. The effort I used to have to put in to changing registers, and the constant difficulties in navigating fast passages is gone. I feel like I am cheating because stuff that used to be hard is so easy now!! You definitely get what you pay for.
4:01 I knew it. The second sounded more soft and it was more enjoyable
Great comparison video, Dear Jasmine! Listening On my cell phone I could not identify the flutes. I thought the first one sounded great! I think every flute sounds great with our delightful Jasmine playing it!!! Have a great weekend!!! 💖💖💖🥰😉😉😉
The Bach Orchestral version in the background is from Jasmine as well?
Yes:)

역시 장인은 도구 탓을 하지 않는군요 🫣🫣 연습 또 연습!!🩶
I never played flute, listened to flute and am on my tablet speakers… under those conditions I found the first one to be better. I’ll give it another try on my pc with a soundboard and good headphones tomorrow XDD
only reason i know that number one was cheap ones is i could hear the keys super well and the second was was silent
When you were pressing the keys on the cheap flute it sounded like the keys on an alto sax.
