  • I took a trip to All Flutes Plus and tried out their top beginner flutes. The twist? I tested them blind...meaning I had no idea which instrument I was playing. I chose my favorite and then reveal to you which was which...the results were surprising! These are the flutes I tried (not in this order though!):
    Trevor James 5 xe
    Trevor James 10 xe
    Yamaha 212
    Pearl 505
    Which is your favorite?

I'm glad I have a Yamaha 212!! Haven't played any other flute yet, so it's good to hear your positive judgement about this flute :-)

When I started out, I played a lot of different flutes, and in retrospect I found that the 200 series Yamaha and the less expensive Pearl flutes I lived with we’re a pretty darn good value, but
I don’t have any Trevor James experience, so I can’t compare and contrast with TJ, but my experience was that the Yammy was a solid reliable flute, but so was the pinless mech in the Pearls, and like you, I also liked the sound more on the Pearls than the Yamaha. The Pearl sound wasn’t as pure and generic as the Yamaha, it was “precolored”so to speak, but I liked it a lot anyway. For classical music, my first thought wouldn’t be to grab a Pearl. Currently, I’m playing Muramatsu and Sankyo flutes, which (respectively) are my generic and precolored flutes, 😉😆. 👨🏻 PS> The Muramatsu sounds so pure and clean that in recent years I’ve enhanced it a bit with a Powell silver philharmonic headjoint,
and it’s a pretty good combination for me, although I will put the OEM headjoint back on if the music will benefit from it. I can use the Sankyo for most styles, but it’s more suited to more modern stuff.

I played a yamaha 212 till I was 16-17 years old. Chaminade, Borne, Martinu, Prokofiev, Mozart, Bach, Telemann.. In retrospect I cant believe that flute held for all that playing... and my tone was admired 😂

I purchased a Pearl 525. it’s the same as the 505 but with solid silver lip plate. I was toying with either a Yamaha or a Pearl at the time of purchase but went for the Pearl purely by the wonderful sound. I think it’s pretty much a personal preference though.

Great job. It's so funny how different sax and flute players are. I have one brand of sax that I like and a box of mouthpieces. So.....I also have one type of flute I like and a bunch of headjoints. I find the cut of the headjoints and mouthpieces are 95% of the sound. (Same with clarinet.) You should have a solid silver headjoint of course. Solid headjoints and B foot will sweeten the highs a bit.

The recorded sound is distorted on the upper notes so it is hard to tell. Also it is very easy for you to identify each flute as you didn't even cover up the logo etching on the flute head joint.

Well I'm from Mexico and those brands doesn't exist here, the only brand that I recognized was the “Yamaha” but it’s super expensive here. I got a "Silver Tone" $155 american dollars ( $3255 mexican pesos) it’s not cheap but it’s a good way to start. Some not expensive brands are good because they want to reach popularity so they have to build a good instrument to give the musician a good time and a good quality. I mean in the “trade war” they’re fighting against big titans in the world of the flutes. David vs. Goliat LoL

Hi ! I rated them in this order as to how they sounded to me on your test - 2, 4, 1, 3. The heavy E flat keys are a particular bugbear on beginner flutes, so why are they ever supplied like that ? No need, but easily adjusted. Good video.

Hi nice video . if I had a request for a different video no one does yet or i cant find it or I'm asking a difficult question . Trevor Wye has a great book on tone with a cd to hear what he is trying to teach us . There are many videos out there the inexpensive flute compared to the 1000s of $ flute but none show the tone each flute has to offer . I'm soon going to purchase a new flute better than my 3shb Gemeinhardt probably a Yamaha . Thanks again nice video.

So would it be better for beginners to learn on intermediate or even pro flutes to avoid bad habits? Shouldn't beginners find it easier to play on non beginners' flutes since they have less skills?

I purchased the Yamaha 212. For me, it was a no brainer. My clarinet is a Yamaha 550al, my bass clarinet is a Yamaha... my whole plasic recorders family(tenor, alto, soprano) is Yamaha... My motorcycle is a Yamaha... my chainsaw is a Yamaha...
    Duh!!!!
Yamaha 212 for the win!!! 🤣
