Microsoft's dumps Cortana in Halo much like they have dumped her in reality. Halo Infinite is the new open world Halo game that only barely rises above the past two Halo games. I suppose it's a step in the right direction, but when the series feels exhausted after just that one step you have to wonder if it can even reach the finish line.

@@capthavic I've heard this a lot about the twist being blatantly obvious and all, and that's true, but the scene is not meant to be a twist to us. We don't always need an unexpected turn of events to drive a story and keep us entertained. I mean, just look at Star Wars Ep 8 and 9 which had too many random and neck breaking twists, but I digress. The scene is moreso a twist for the Weapon and the spark of the moment which starts an internal conflict within her about if she will become like Cortana, especially with how she was acting when she stopped Chief from deleting her. I like to think the real twist and the part that keeps us interested is right after she asks to be deleted, and Chief decided to give her a chance to live, even if he doesn't trust her, but he wants to.

The only reasons I can come up with for the laser handcuffs, and this is all speculation, is that they can be made bigger and smaller for different races. And/or they are more deadly to try and resist, for example if you have a race that can easily crush metals.

I'm playing it currently. In my eyes, it's just a chain of MP maps. They tried hard to you not giving a shit about the story, characters, physics, and the past and the future of Halo, and they tried even harder to get you addicted to MP features in the campaign. For the records, it just doesn't work.
The driving is shittier than ever in a Halo, but the gameplay is solid, and the new weapons are fun. The game is really okay for some quick and mindless action after a hard day.
But this game is a clear indicator that they have no clue what to do with the series if it's not about milking the whales in the MP. But nowadays, nobody has an idea what to do with any brand. Fallout, TES, Mass Effect, Rage, Prey, Wolfenstein, GTA, Saints Row... Every brand I once loved is worthless nowadays, and who gives a shit about new ones like Cybercrap. They spend hundreds of millions for their shitty games and a viral marketing campaign, but nobody has ever the idea to at least contract you to write a better story than "I am so evil, and I will crush you!". I mean, the story of this game is like a Twitter thread.

Halo infinite's problem lies exactly within the story. Theres so much off-screen hand waving and "I hope you read X book" that its a travesty of story telling. Halo 5 had its issues with its story of course; something they clearly learned NOTHING from among other game elements, but to pull a kishimoto and give Cortana the Madara treatment ("Oh shit we made her too powerful, we gotta kill her off somehow and give our hero a way to succeed") and make the banished this absurdly sized threat of being able to somehow take on cortana. Not only is this bad writing, but we basically gloss over the fact that the spirit of fire was the one attacking the banished in halo wars 2 all the way till the end, and then.... poof we just forgot about them and now they can take on the INFINITY of all things. 343 gave the banished WAY too much credit. Im interested in the little references they made in certain sections of the story, especially the ending, to the forerunner trilogy. This raises questions that i doubt 343 will answer properly.

Finally, someone who actually has read the books complains about the books. Usually its people who are too lazy to read them are the ones who complain about them.
My problem with the books is that they dont actually set up game that follow them like people think they do.
Did pre-Halo 5 Books set up an AI Uprising? No, it set up the Chief VS Locke Rivalry that never happened.
Did pre-Halo Infinite books set up the Banished Curbstomp of the UNSC? No, it set up the threat of the Created Faction, a fight we never get to play.

I didnt get to read the pre infinite books because they just came in today as i ordered them for myself recently. Good to know how useless they are. At least the Halo 4 era of stuff was pretty solid, even the filler stuff that was like slightly pre 4 to just after was good too. Everything else leading up to and after 5 was just a slow burn of a wreck with ideas that never got realized. Hell, my personal favorite side trilogy, the Kilo-5 trilogy was a big waste because what did it amount to? From taking the armor upgrades gathered from fallen soldiers in doom 2016, to the grappling hook, and the endless looking exactly like the Khan Makyr. This series has fallen off in a truly depressing way.

I don’t understand why people think the other gear items are useless. I didn’t use the drop shield, but that’s because it doesn’t fit my style. It seems like it can be useful. Evasion is very useful when you get the invisibility. The sensor is always useful. It’s especially useful if you use the infinite-gear-usage mod. I’m assuming people are having trouble using them, rather than finding them useless.

Story developers these days, regardless of what company they work for, come up with such disjointed stories to their prequels, like as if they are getting carried away while coming up with story ideas. Getting this carried away makes the plot all sloppy, and makes the fans say “They could done this instead of this! Why didn’t they?! It would have been a better idea that made the story not so disjointed and flowed better that tied in better with the story!” For example: why have Cortana’s return to being good and her sacrificing herself, take place BEFORE you start playing as Master Chief? Why have Atriox show up just to then have him disappear, and unknowingly how so at that? What are the Banished and the Harbinger really trying to accomplish? If you introduced new characters that fans didn’t care for beforehand, you don’t go about killing them off just to please the fan base, instead you need to improve their character; so why then kill off Lasky, Halsey, Locke, the Spartans etc? That’s just a lazy and sloppy work of trying to please fans!
How sloppy would this be for example:
    Billy Bob saves the day.
Fan group 1: “We don’t care about Billy Bob”
    Billy Bob is killed off.
Fan group 2: “You should have just improved on Billy Bob’s character, not killed him off all because many fans hate him! Try to give fans a reason to like him!”
Billy Bob’s fate has been changed and now it is that he just faked his death.
Fan group 2: “Ok! No! You can’t bring him back into the story and improve his character! It’s too late now! You already killed him off before, haven’t you?”
Billy Bob officially dies for good, and a new character replaces him, but the new character doesn’t fit the story as well even though the story developers think otherwise.
Fan group 1 and 2: “Ok, this is just getting sillier and sillier and now they’ve just killed it for us completely! Sorry, but we are done with this! It’s so screwed up now that there is no fixing it or coming back from this mess the devs have done!”
With Halo4, Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite, I feel like THIS is what the problem is. 343 Industries are trying to sell something thinking some idea is better, when it’s actually worse, then they try to fix it by trying to undo what they’ve done, but then it just makes the story sillier and a complete sloppy mess that is all over the place and the developers have no idea what they are doing or how to figure out what the right path is. They establish one thing in-story, but then try to scrap it partly that makes the story all the more terrible. It’s like as if they don’t know what they are doing and are worrying too much about what fans think about Locke, Lasky, Palmer, Halsey, etc. and 343 Industries is just letting such criticisms from fans confuse them on how they should tell the story. You improve the story not by killing off the newly introduced characters, but by improving them, but keeping the story mainly focused on Master Chief! You don’t have Cortana become good and then die right away let alone all before you start playing the game, but instead have that happen all throughout the campaign’s story; nor do you need to make a second Cortana in order to undo the mistakes done with her character in Halo 5: Guardians! Just have her turn good again and sacrifice herself for the greater good, but DURING the campaign, not before it!
IDK. I feel THAT personally would have made for a better story that at least did Cortana’s character justice. They did what they did thinking this did give Cortana’s character justice, having her turn good and sacrifice herself before the campaign begins, but it instead just made things seem like 343 is worrying WAY too much on what the critics say! Doing so is just going to mess them up! Obviously they are worrying too much on what the critics say, which has always led to messing a story up, because you can’t think straight with a stressed out mind! 343 is stressing out too much on what critics say, obviously! It’s either that, or they just don’t know how to work together more productively as a team nor think ideas through enough together on whether those ideas be good or bad ones! I don’t know…
Another major issue of a plot hole is that Master Chief survived floating in space in nothing but his armor, for six months! Why didn’t they explain how he had? Does the new GEN 3 MJOLNIR armor have a built-in cryo-sleep or something? They need to explain how he survived for that long.

You easily dispatch of a dozen of vicious soldiers who apparently could defeat entire squads of ODST/spartans or Marine, and they just chill on the plains like they are on vacations. I just assumed it was a matter of reverse-engineering Forerunner tech, to explain how the UNSC managed to make any crazy science experiment happen. As for why not use the thruster packs and jetpacks from the previous games… maybe in the lore they wanted something that would not require constant refuels? From my extremely limited knowledge on real life grappling hook tech, I would presume Chief’s would use some kind of motor, which would probably be powered by the battery in the suit. And this would make the grappleshot very reusable. And the grappleshot, in game, seems to make Chief ascend to heights faster than the jetpack ever could. And the thruster pack was better for evasive maneuvers rather than height boosts.

Given that the UNSC Infinity existed to demonstrate the UNSC’s technological advancement between Halo 3 and 4, I honestly would have wanted an improved jetpack in the campaign, that would let me fly higher and for longer, possibly a rehash on antigravity packs that the Covenant use. I haven't played Halo Infinite (still need that Xbox), but every time I hear criticisms of it, I realize that people are far more difficult on new games than they are the "classics." It's similar to how people act as if Dark Souls 1 is untouchable and ignore its endless flaws but are super hard on everything afterwards. But hey, maybe you never loved Halo - suggested by the "good" games comment at the beginning - and so this dissection is fair. Watching/reading these type takes makes me realize how overhyped some of the original Halo games are, as so many of the criticisms persisted then or weird statements like "this feels out of place" ONLY because it's different than what came before.
It's also fascinating how people complain about the new lore, but then complain when 343 ditches it. It's bad when they try to be like classic Halo & it's bad when they try to do something different. I would never want to inherit a franchise man lmao.

You really summed up all my gripes with the game lmao. It's a step forward but there are so many stupid, and little story choices that make ZERO sense. Sooo many "get out of jail free" cards, missing characters, and ignored things.
Blue team was shadow written off screen and are only mentioned once by Lasky who NEVER appears in game. Locke is clearly dead, that IS his helmet on one of the Spartan killers shoulder. Palmer is just Thanos Snapped out of existence. Heck, I don't think Halsey is even mentioned besides your few Cortana flashbacks.
The vehicles all have that goofy "glow red and make noise then blow up", animation. We ALL know that if your warthog is on fire, it's not gonna last much longer. Even the scorpion is pathetically weak. And air dropping the scorpion is pointless because the open world is NOT scorpion friendly.
And then Endless pose 0 threat to humanity. Harbinger even says she doesn't care about us and doesn't wanna fight us. It all baflles me.

I’ve been saying forever that the story of this trilogy was doomed when 343 Studios decided they needed to solve a problem that literally didn’t exist: Cortana. Of all the things to try to destroy why would they go after her? Rampancy was a concept they pulled out of their ass and decided to kill her off at the end of Halo 4 only to retcon that and resurrect her as the main villain in Halo 5 only to retcon that in Halo Infinite in the most ridiculous way possible so that we wind up with Cortana 2.0 which we wouldn’t even have needed if they hadn’t fucked her up for no reason in Halo 4. Also if she destroyed Brutes home world why didn’t she just blow up Earth instead of just Sydney?? And finally why oh why does Halo 4 look so much better than Halo Infinite? Sexiness aside Halo 4’s Cortana looks like the one that’s next gen while Infinite’s Cortana and Weapon look like they could have been rendered by the Xbox 360 …

1- this would go against her promising IA life
2- this never happens in the book quite the contrary happens even, Halo Bad blood => leonidas matrix get trashed, he upload himself in one of alpha 9 Mjlonjr suit get recovered by a guardian and sniped by romeo, at no point what happens in the game could have happened with the book existing ...
also you pointed out that's there's no promotheans etc... but what about the domain ? how the F could she die when she can just upload herself to the domain ?

Remember when playing Combat Evolved you got hyped to play it rather fast?
How Halo 2 had this rather boring beginning (gameplay wise, but a somewhat necessary lore expo) and then was fun?
How Halo 3 shortened the beginning and pushed fun to you quickly?
How Halo 4 again had to do lore expo that didn't explain you why Elites got dumber and encumbered? But was fun 'till you had to deal with Promethans started to pop in and out your gameplay.
How Halo 5 was questionable, gameplay a copy paste of previous one with inclusion of Reach teamplay for allowing people with no friends play only with AI and those who have some not play Halo 5 at all.
How Halo Reach was unique with it's team gameplay, return of some CE mechanics (aka non-regenerative health). And Armor Lock? ARMORLOCKARMORLOCKARMORLOCKARMORLOCK!

1:28 - 2:00 Thank you for this. I'm probably gonna get flack for this but I thought Halo 5's campaign wasn't all that bad. (Perhaps it's because by the time I played it, I already heard about the contraversey regarding how the whole marketing of "Locke VS Chief" was a lie. So I didn't really have much expectations going into Halo 5)
But I was actually looking forward to the next Halo game. I was expecting that there was gonna be this epic battle where we would have to fight the Guardians and there was going to be this emotional showdown between Chief and Cortana. But then all this shit happens before the game even begins.
It would be cool if they made a prequel (or prequels) game that dealt with Cortana, her Guardians and her Prometheans. But you are probably right in that they will rather write a book detailing these events.

I'm only upset you missed how 343 butchered multiplayer in favour of charging people for literally everything. Personally i prefer old style Halo multiplayer but the new one was passable(ish), up to the point you only can play big team, basic teams and lone wolfs whilst not being allowed to chose the mode you wish to play (C'mon, even fanboys can admit this was them releasing a half finished game... like they did with 5, a function fans was less than impressed with). Even the devs admitted progress is slow in multiplayer and yet they never fixed it... it's still in beta as far as i am concerned. But, I will give it another 6 months and try it then, who knows, i might be able to chose if i play swat or CTF.

The parts of the game where you fight nothing but Sentinels stand out as places that the Prometheans really, really should have appeared. Despite its problems, Halo 5 improved the gameplay of the Prometheans a lot, and if they just did some touch-ups and an art-style change I think a lot more people would like them.
