The “Samuel” the “Red Flag. 034” was such a good little detail. Helps show the book side of chief. John was always caring of the fellow Spartans. He was a great leader. And Sam was one of his best friends, and John actually followed his lead in some of the challenges they were given as early Spartans. And Sam could’ve been better than John but sacrificed himself. So, as touched on in the video, he’s being humanized by honor his friend and brother in arms.

Just want to say, I think The Weapon and Chief's relationship is more father-daughter than romantic. That got hammered home to me in the last scene with Cortana. Cortana's attitude was just like a mother gushing over her daughter, and Chief presents a mentoring attitude throughout the entire game.

Sam was Johns first friend, along with Kelley. Sam’s sacrifice taught John the difference between wasting the lives of those under his command(through bad orders, bad decisions) and the sacrifice of those under his command. He ordered sam to cover the retreat of himself and the other Spartans.

    • @DualWieldFTW
      @DualWieldFTW 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Should add that their first mission was to neutralize a covenant ship, and they had to in/exfiltrate without a vessel. Sam had taken a plasma bolt that breached the then-shieldless MJOLNIR MK-IV (iirc), so he wouldn't have survived the mission anyway.
The reason for the reference is, i believe, that John saw Sam's death as his first failure, something that John has been ruminating on for a while. All the same, I'm very appreciative of a spent v. wasted lives theme.

I got a little fan theory about the name The Weapon may choose for herself: I think her name will become Joyeuse (French, meaning: joyful).
The name Cortana comes from Curtana, a sword from the French saga "A Matter of France". This sword was said to have had the inscription: "I am Curtana, made of the same steel as Durendal and Joyeuse". Durendal was the sword of Roland the Paladin, and Joyeuse was the sword of Charlemagne, King of the Franks.
Now The Weapon was made from the same source material (ie: steel) as Cortana: Dr. Halsey's cloned brains. Durendal has already been used as the name of an AI in the Bungie game Marathon, so that could leave the more feminine "Joyeuse" as the perfect name for this very joyful character.
Of course, that would be nice but the marketing morons will probably insist on Cortana 2.0.

    • @DualWieldFTW

I've seen that theory a few times, and really really hope they go down that path. Together, that would perfectly lend itself to the weapon naming herself Joyeuse.

Little more about the Samuel moment. RED FLAG was the name of the main thrust operation conceived after Sam was killed. He specifically was left behind to sacrifice himself to ensure the destruction of a Covenant ship. Chief's use of his name refers not only to Sam's death, but to the fact that Chief had to willfully leave him behind. Cortina's deletion protocol is locked behind a word that, to Chief, means the reluctant sacrifice of a friend.

My Favorite addition to Halo is Fernando Esparza, aka The Pilot. Not only because he's voice acted by the same person voicing Octane in Apex Legends that brings so much needed energy and " realness" to the game that we rarely get to see , but also because he provides the sort of point of view throughout the story that we don't really have seen much in Halo.
Seeing a person starting to "believe" like the Halo 3 tag line was. Seeing them start to understand why The Chief is looked upon as a hero and see hope rise up in the hearts among those who fight alongside him while also being a character that helps the Chief actually do some introspection of his own.
The first time we're introduced to him, he's a guy stranded in a space ship, among scraps and remains of the UNSC. A man absolutly hopeless and on the edge of giving up completly, indicated probably the deepest by the 1 bullet left in a pistole he hands to the Chief. Then throughout the game he's " the whiny guy" that wants to go home. It might even get a little annoying, but when he and Chief have a fight at the scrapyard, something new is revealed. He's not a soldier. He's not military. He's literally a civilian. Just a volunteer doing some tech work. a dude that got dragged into a huge conflict. All of his talking makes a lot more sense now.
Marines have always been cheering for the Chief, because they either have seen or know fellow soldiers that have seen Spartans in Action. Ofcourse they're down to go into Hell with him. But for a civilian, he's like a fairy tale or a comic book hero. Stories that are hard to believe. But after seeing him in action for so long, he eventually started to believe. Hell, he was ready to take on the Banished on the entire Ring by the end of the game.
Meanwhile, during that argument, John realizes what he's been doing was wrong. He dragged a person that he claims to protect ( aka the vague concept of Humanity) into a warzone. Up to that point John ignored almost every comment and request by Fernando but after this, a lot of things change. Some of that was becoming more protective and more willingly to listen to him.
The entire back and forth that these two have is a nice call back to Halo 4's ending when Cpt. Lasky points out to Chief that he seems to see Soldiers and Humanity as two seperated things when they're not. This comes together really well in this game throughtout the story as a B-line plot.
I loved Fernando and I like what they did with him. I want to see more of him!

The way 343 made the open world and story missions side by side is amazing, on one hand you've got a world that will appeal to most people and will explore it, and on the other hand the linear story missions that everyone loves is still there. Not to mention that every area is still connected through the open world, but each area has it's own feeling when your playing through it.

Not gonna lie though, one of the best parts of this game is the environmental storytelling. The House of Reckoning especially just SHOOK me. When I saw the Multiplayer-like training arena, I was like "oh shit, they've been preparing SPECIFICALLY to fight UNSC" just from that view---that's what makes the Banished ten times more dangerous than the Covenant. Apart from Thel 'Vadam, the Covvies were arrogant and felt they were above humanity with their superior weapons and barely strategized; the Banished do not underestimate any of their enemies and use ALL the assets available to them. Strong AND smart.
The devs knew exactly what they were doing and I love it.

I like to think he learned from the moment in Halo 4 where the didact destroyed the terminal he was trying to pull Cortana from. In my headcanon, that's what he sees as the moment he truly failed, because if Cortana had been in his suit she couldn't have fragmented & self sacrificed, and everything that followed might not have happened. If he'd just been faster, he tells himself, he could've taken her to Halsey, who in his desperation he believes could have fixed her.
I love how his regret is so tangible in Infinite. But if Regret is the theme of Infinite's campaign, perhaps the next story might be themed after Truth or Mercy 😏

A little disappointed you didn't spend much time on Escharum, given he's surprisingly quite the highlight for this campaign (particularly his big speech- y'all know the one), but ah well. More importantly, yeah, Halo is fucking back. *God it feels so good to say that.*
I will say that regarding Atriox and the Banished, I do strongly recommend trying out the Halo Wars games. They may be RTS's, but they're more of like... diet RTS's. And Halo Wars 2 in particular has a lot of useful context regarding the Banished, given it's the game that literally debuted them (and arguably is thus partially responsible for the success of Infinite).

For the next game halo game would love for it to be linear game. To continue with the following story line against the banished and endless but one thing I was thinking for co-op is that it could be like 3 and 5. Bring back fire team, blue team, arbiter and introduce red team to the story. SO we can see the endless and the banished under Atrioxs rule.
Player 1 will be chief as default
    Player 2: Arbiter or Jerome
Player 3-4 can choose between the blue and purple elites or from one of the teams. I think it would be really neat.
even if they wanna do 6 player just to add the extra spartan or elites.

6:38, technically, it has, New Alexandria from Halo Reach only had one checkpoint to choose from when loading the mission from the menu, as it's all in the same area that you go around in the falcon, and it while its still somewhat scripted, it plays out fairly close to an open world game.
and also, pretty much the majority of Halo 3 ODST was open world exploration of New Mombasa.

0:54 honestly I love the trailer version of this so much more rather than the in game one. To me it felt like the wife/mother had more of that "Let's cheer dad up while he's away" and guiding the kid with what to say. It felt more raw like it was the first take instead of the in game one which felt like they had rehearsed it a couple times over before recording and sending it to him. For the most part I love the in game changes but this one bugged me, they nailed it in the trailer and should have kept it as it was.

I'm surprised you didn't win a lot more of Cortina's action's that mirrored the original Cortana, hell, even certain bits of the story itself, like Chief stopping the laser at 9:35 , not only to protect Cortina just on instinct but also because in Halo 3 he couldn't take 1 without almost dying and now he takes one like it's nothing, or how there's a lot of little details about the Arbiter, Locke and many other characters around the entirety of the Halo franchise, although they are found in the open world.
And although this should only be a win when it comes out at some point, we might be getting the Spirit of Fire in Infinite as an audio file as been found that as our good, happy pilot is telling Chief that he "won't believe this" as the same signal he had when he found Chief is going off in the background, given that the Banished were fighting the Spirit of Fire, i wouldn't be surprised if they finally show up on the next story expansion to aid Chief and just imagine, a ship everyone thought was gone, destroyed in space, comes back as Humanity's last hope like, you guessed it, a Spirit of Fire.
