  • This video chronicles an episode of the pitfalls and joys of living "the tractor life." Today we need to upgrade this 1970 model Ford 3000 tractor with a gasoline engine, from an old style generator to a little more up-to-date alternator system. This should improve the charging and lighting system on the tractor. Before the upgrade, the lights would pull down the battery after a while and make it hard to start. After the upgrade, The lights are super bright and there is never a problem stating the engine.
There are a couple of places to obtain a kit. I got mine from E-Bay for around $195.00 US dollars. Amazon also list some kits. I must confess, however, I could have foregone the kit and made my own brackets. But not everyone has the shop equipment to produce and weld these up. In that case, these are well worth the money. Just be aware that you should check behind the kit maker's measurements to avoid disappointments.
Also, don't take this as a "professional instructional video". It's only intention it to show how I upgraded my tractor from a Generator to an Alternator charging system, and only has entertainment value. You should be competent in your own abilities in attempting any repairs on your equipment, and you do so at your own risk.

So that’s why the 10mm sockets go missing.

Yeah, I always figured they went to the same place missing socks went to. But sometimes my junk tool drawer comes in handy.

Hi. I have the same conversion on my 3000 and the belt just broke. There's no number on it. Do you know what belt you used? None of the places that sell the kit can tell me the belt part number. Thanks.

I am from Poland, I have got 4000 model and I use alternator from ursus c-360 and it match surprisingly well and IT cost 1/4 price od this kit

Didn't like that top bracket rubbing the sheet metal. Did you get it off enough not to wear a spot?

I think you may be referring to the top adjusting bracket. If so, I ended up not using the bracket with the kit because it did not allow enough adjustment for the new belt and as I recall, it did rub the sheet metal. I instead took the original bracket and shaped it to fit the offset and it allowed a longer adjustment and better clearance on top.

What size bolt did you use on the tensioner bracket?

Hi, Sorry for the late reply. I have been out on the property for the last weeks working and not around the computer much. The tensioner bracket is attached to the top of engine block (on the gasoline engine) where a cover is located for a water jacket. You use the outside bolt closest to the alternator to run through the bracket. Of Course, the bolt that is used for the adjusting slot, screws into the alternator. You should check your alternator for proper thread size and bolt length because some of these alternators may be metric that comes in kits or if sold as a lone unit. I would hate to give you a size, and you damage your threads in the aluminum housing.
      Thanks for watching!

i just bought this kit for my 4500 backhoe and its definately not bolt on. i have to slot the holes and im going to have to get a different belt. the kit gets it done, but its very poorly made.

Yeah, I had to slot the bracket as well. The spacer that came with it was useless, and I had to make one. I reused my old top adjusting bracket from the old generator. I heated and bent it to shape. And like you, a new belt was needed. These kits are not well-thought-out it seems. The wiring harness was good that came with the unit.

@@larryheninger3499 i have to assume the harness was good because it came from the alternator not the kit. i have the 301 diesel and the diesel bracket will work. i ran the nut down on the bolt and just got it to bend the u bracket to the spacer.
