It's unclear wether or not these were just tests to try out certain effects (that'd be weird, since most of them were already implemented in both REmake and Zero), or if they originally contemplated doing RE4 with pre-rendered backgrounds.
@@notafortnitegamer The Castle version of RE4 would've been kind of interesting with 2D backgrounds like the ones from RE0...but, quite frankly, had they done something like that back in the day, it would've been insane: everyone was expecting the next official entry to be in full-3D like CODE: Veronica. Japanese censorship rules are much more stricter about violent content such as decapitations and dismemberment so it makes sense they were removed in the Japanese release, but I don't see why they weren't included in the North American or European releases. The flamethrower would have been really useful to burn zombie bodies and prevent Crimson Heads from reviving, which is probably why they restricted it to a single area.
Yeah, Chris already has flash grenades as an additional source of decapitations, to counterbalance Jill having incendiary rounds as an additional source of burning.
I would've liked the laser weapon added in. Mowing through the horror with an OP weapon really felt like a reward after finishing the entire game with difficult achievements.
I'm kinda glad they removed the taunts. As fun as they would have been to use, maybe they felt it would have broken the immersion, tensity and seriousness they were going for. Imagine barely escaping a room with crimsons in just to do some body popping a few seconds later 😂 Love the content as usual Score!
Nah they shoulda left it in, I fuckin hate spiders so bitching them out after using everything in my inventory to destroy them woulda made me feel even better than just walking by giant dead spiders. Definitely would do a victory dance after leaving a crimson room, couldn't beat me I'm ultimate! ....... As long as I don't go back in that room 😂😂
The taunts seemed more fitting for Devil May Cry then Resident Evil. Kinda deja vu to think about considering DMC was born out of a scrapped version of Resident Evil 4.
The best thing in my opinion that the remake added was the survival defense weapons for chris and jill finding those daggers, flash grenades, and stun gun batteries was pretty cool and definently helped out a lot 👍
I remember before RE Remake was released, I saw a screen shot of Jill doing that high kick in a gaming magazine with a caption that said “new martial art combat features”. When I finally played the game, that feature was nowhere to be found and I was really disappointed. I used to wonder what happened to that until I saw this video. Apparently I was misled
It was a Game Informer I still have that issue. For years I wonder why hand to hand wasn't added in the series until 4. Now 22 years later I found it was a cut idle animation.
Me too. I remember seeing that same magazine and for some reason it is still imprinted in my head. It was before the game came out and I remember being at a 711 and seeing it. I thought “finally you can punch or kick zombies”
I remember seeing that clip of the laser gun on the japanese website of the game waaaaaaay back in the day near the original GameCube release. Was super excited to actually use it, but found out it wasn't even in the game, which was a bummer.

I could be remembering this wrong but I'm sure the decapitations on the European version for the GameCube was left in. I distinctly remember getting my head taken off while playing this as a kid.
To your question about the questionable path in the a storm: it was probably too graphically demanding. Look at it, there's a lot going on in that scene even if it just rain and wind. The thing about teasers, from what I understand, is they showcase what the console can do when pushed to its limit. What you were looking at was a scene with no enemies, no character movement, just nature. My theory is it worked in RE0 because of the infinite background that probably wasn't rendered, allowing the gamecube to tackle that scene. Edit: I didn't see the comment where one already addressed this. I didn't think to consider that some of the material was from what was originally RE4.
To be fair, Chris does have flash grenades, which can instantly splatter zombies’ heads unlike Jill’s stun gun. Not counting the flamethrower and Barry’s optional gun, I think the arsenals of Chris and Jill are meant to represent better quality weapons versus a higher quantity of weapons (plus having certain weapons sooner). This even seems to be reflected in the inventory, where Chris has six spaces versus Jill having eight. Jill gets to acquire both shotguns earlier and have an additional grenade launcher. But Chris’ flash rounds are better than Jill’s stun gun, Chris can more easily score headshots with the handgun, Chris’ knife seems to do more damage, and he gets to have more magnum ammo than Jill.
1:10 That always pissed me off. I never understood why I was dying to that move from full health as a kid, and as an adult, I had to assume they slashed the throat and it just wasn't modeled. Didn't realize it was supposed to be a decapitation.
Man, having a randomiser option for finishing the game would be brilliant for replay value - having to find important items in different places or encountering different non-boss enemies in parts of the mansion where they'd normally not be would force you to adapt on the fly, which would only make it that much more intense, especially if you're stuck in a tight hallway with a Hunter instead of a zombie or a swarm of Chimera rather than a pack of Cerberus.
I think around the time REmake got released, it became illegal in Japan to show decapitations in videogames (cultural reasons, just as you cant show characters with four fingers, the Oddworld games got their cutscenes modified in the japanese releases), I remember CV didnt have decapitations either...and I'm positive this became the norm shortly after RE4 came out, there are no decapitations in any RE game after 4.
I can answer some of the question Score had in this video. 1. Those random enemy locations were just engine tests and it's highly unlikely they ever intended enemies to be in most of these locations they showed off especially the spider ones. 2. Those unrecognizable rooms and angles were just engine tests including that bird cage room which imo looks more like something from the Residence.
I think something that’s important to this part is the limits on the hardware it was originally released for. The GameCube was only recently released when this came out, and if I remember correctly it required 2 discs. Perhaps many of these things were scrapped due to hardware limitations.
I've never heard of taunting. I always hears there was going to be melee combat and that's what the kick animation was for. I've never seen the shoulder rolling. Neat stuff. I love how much content you can make that's pretty much only RE related. Thanks for the countless hours of entertainment and thought provoking. Me and my dog have enjoyed watching these.
my biggest and probably only complaint about the remake is the infinite rocket launcher. In the original when using such a weapon on zombies, it blew them to pieces in amazing gory fashion. But as you've even shown in the video, zombies and crimson heads just get hit by the shot of the RL and are blown backwards. It feels incredibly dissapointing compared to actually blowing a zombies head off with a shotgun or handgun
In regards to the cut areas, Project Umbrella recently released an article on a bunch of cut content and production materials regarding the OG Resident Evil (The Development of Biohazard and History of System and Scenario). Capcom originally planned on a much bigger game, with not only the one mansion, but at least 2 more "mansions," as well as a swamp area. One of these other "mansions" would have been a castle/dungeon area. Those missing environments look very much like a dungeon setting, so maybe at some point, the folks at Capcom planned to implement some more of the content they abandoned in the OG game due to technical limitations, only for the jump to the GameCube still limiting how much of the cut content they could implement. In regards to the "taunts," I'm pretty sure that's just tech demo footage used to demonstrate the motion capture system they used.
We got to experience rain in RE3 when we play as Carlos and Jills first half of the park and at the start of RE2 remake, pretty odd we didn’t get many more instances. One of the biggest regrets of RE3 remake was what they could of done visually with the weather environments etc the rain/wet mud from the graveyard and so on, maybe one day 🤷♂️
The only thing I wish the remake had was a Rebecca Chambers chapter where it shows what happened once she got to the mansion up until she meets up with Chris
Well your wish was (kinda) granted in the wii exclusive "Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles". A rail shooter that covers events from 0,1,3 and some exclusive Albert Wesker's story.
I still kind of wish they would remake RE1 yet again like 2 and 3. I'd love to play this claustrophobic setting in a third person perspective, and I'd love to see the mansion in new angles. Plus the 2 and 3 remakes are just really fun.
So many good content left in the Cutting Room floor, anyway I'm happy for what we got with the remake. But, I agreed that would be very fun to see those beta content in the game too! xDDDD
As good as this game was, it was really disappointing to see the character death scenes removed. In the old REs, knowing how gruesomely your character dies made me never want to get killed on the games. I see people saying it's to do with modern Japanese censorship. I always assumed Capcom didn't want the RE protagonists being gruesonely killed anymore, as they've become iconic, hahaha. Regardless, it still sucks that they weren't in REmake, and most of the other newer RE games.
Just bad budgeting. Why spend and work more when you can maximize profits, kinda just the Japanese way at this point cause if you've seen the content in a call of duty game it's pumped to the max forget a budget they'll get the money back, not that I like call of duty like that its more or less the same game now different title. It truly is just them thinking the players love the game series enough to keep buying and ignoring things like that when RE 3 Remake was total ass, Uncharted Zombie edition.
The Kung-Fu Jill animation was cut, because the silliness breaks the tense immersion of the setting. I suppose it could have been kept for replay runs, after the player completed the game, but I can see why they didn't want it in.
It would’ve been nice to see some of these additions to the game but REmake is just perfect. It’s still my favorite game. Not just in the series but in video games in general. I can’t imagine the game without Lisa Trevor. She’s definitely on my top five villains from RE. Her story is equally terrifying and tragic.
One possibility is that they changed the enemy placement to not spoil the scares. But I totally agree they should add a mode with random enemy placement (or at least a different one akin to the Director's Cut).
If I remember right one of the things that were removed were melee attacks and I'll never not be salty about their removal as it would have been a realistic option to fall back on when you're out of ammo (these are highly trained officers after all) to escape from a bite or worse. They could have even included an option to turn it off or on for those who wouldn't want it. Oh well.
... you have a combat knife and defence weapons, are those not melee? I see people making suggestions to keep things in games and just make them optional a lot. Do you think that a game like this would have been as popular and accessible as it was, if a new player has a hundred options to pick from at first startup? Would a gauntlet of tutorials for all the 'nice to have' mechanics that trigger the second you take control of the character for the first time have made for engaging gameplay? Any game director worth their salt would have rightly said no to all of that, and clearly they did.

That shot of Jill kicking had me so excited. I spent hours trying to figure out how to kick (no internet). I was so disappointed when I realized melee attacks weren’t in the game.
I mean it's pretty easy to know why certain things were removed. I mean those areas you could easily assume that it's either because they didn't finish them in time or in testing whatever areas they were just didn't feel good or fit.
The decapitation was removed due censorship. But for some reason I could have sworn it was in the Remake, but I never saw the decapitation animation from the Hunter and Chimera because of the numerous time I fell victim to it the original.
I have a theory that the beautiful rocky stairway in the rain was intended to be the entrance behind the waterfall. That would also suggest that that's not rain pouring down, it's water from the waterfall
Imagine a RE game with randomize enemies, you could either open a door and find a single zombie or a pack of hunters while you are only armed with a handgun and a knife.
Funny, I just started replaying this last night. What a weird idea they had for the remake initially though, changed enemy placement would be a good surprise
Hm, I’m almost sure the decapitation is in the remake but only in the GameCube version. I have the GameCube original so I could check, but I’m pretty sure I’ve had it happen once. Not that it matters anyway. It’s not going to change the fact that REmake is my favorite remake ever made. Lol
I kinda get the decapitation thing. Other than the text, the game is exactly the same in the Japanese and Western versions, if I remember right. Japanese games often censor things like dismemberment and decapitation and I’m sure the higher fidelity graphics of the remake lead to that decision being made for this game.
Wish they added the gore back with the remastered release, at least on non Japanese versions. This is why I still prefer the og. But re1 remake overall is a better and possibly the best remake we will ever get from Capcom.
I can tell you with almost 99% certainty that Remake on the GC, and maybe even the Wii, had decapitations on the final build of NTSC-U copies. This must be a Remaster change... which I didn't even know about because I've yet to get decapitated in the Remasters all these years, but now I know. Guess modding will be the answer for this one on PC, which is the best version anyway... only version to allow you to run at 60FPS instead of just 30FPS and the randomizer mods are a ton of fun.
I just realized watching this that the entire time you’re inside the mansion, it’s storming and thundering outside but when you go outside it’s dry and no thunder. Maybe I’m wrong idk but it seems unlikely🤷🏻♂️
The Original Re1 and the Remake are really not like the same game, are more like 2 different games, the tone and style are very different., the first game had a more realistic art style, like P.T. where you see realistic enviorments and also the FMV video makes you feel that they were kinda rookies from a small town., the second game is more action based, the enviorments are not realistic are more like "horror" oriented, like intencional horror, i think is a good game too, especially the CRT versions but i think the ps1 game is better (minus the voices acting of course)
I feel like maybe they had an idea of an arange mode like whats in the Gameboy version I think unless it was in another version. Anyway this changes enemy placements & changes some camera angles which is amazing. I hope one day they REmake RE2 & RE3 Nemesis in this style doing all the things from the original but adding more. RE2 remake tried to do this a bit. It added the orphanage & it added more living cops instead of the 4 in the original. We saw about 5 in the remake, we have Chief Irons, Marvin & the helicopter pilot which where in the original & we got two other survivors which kinda help you. The original only having Irons, Marvin, Helicopter pilot & the fat cop with the MP5 that has terrible aim leading to his death & the helicopter crash. I think RE2 remake just kinda needed more time & should've had some option to use fixed camera's like some kinda special Classic mode which changed Zombies to be closer to the original. I think had RE1 Remake & RE0 had done well back when it released we'd have gotten a remake of all the original games. But if that happened we'd never have gotten the masterpiece of RE4 & then the franchise would've been very different. Likely would've died out as well you can only make the same style for so long & the ablity for the Resident Evil series to change every so often has kept it relevant for well over 20 years. RE1 to Code Veronica & then the Remake of 1 & 0 fill the single player fixed camera formula that works well but after Code Veronica started to kinda stagnate & 0 tried but failed to bring something new to the table. So they worked hard & made RE4 starting the 3rd person action horror games then we have RE5 & RE6 & Revelations 2 to fill the co-op action horror & sometimes just action games. Revelations 1 is the action horror single player game. Then we have it stagnate & they innovate & make RE7 & RE8 to fill the first person horror scene & Re8 the action horror in VR being good games. We also have RE2 Remake & Re3 Remake to fill in the other more action horror 3rd person games along with RE4 Remake. Also we have the survivor games for gimicky guncon gameplay & then the Outbreak games are 3rd person fixed camera 3 player co-op stuff & there is more spin offs but nobody really cares about them.
That burning building I thought was the umbrella research facility Rebecca and Billy was at. So I thought, I could be wrong. But I miss how re used to be.
It's funny. Everybody and their cousins dog loves the remake but my favorite version of resident evil is the directors cut. It just feels like a tighter better paced game. Most of the changes to the mansion in the remake just slows it down and causes more backtracking without really adding much to the game itself. I would have loved to see directors cut with better graphics.
I don´t think those are taunts, it looks like a motion capture testing. And the laser is to test de wall hit boxes/boundaries. The unused animations are engine tests to show off the lightning efects and the high FPS animation.
On the removal of decapitation, I do agree with other comments about the censorship boards but I believe that Nintendo is to blame here. RER was originally released on Game Cube & Nintendo is to video games as Disney is to films. Remember when Mortal Kombat released on SNES? It had no blood compared to the Sega version.
Yea I don't buy that explanation personally. Nintendo by this point had published conkers bad fur day and perfect dark, so there was no reason for them to censor it in the west. I think it was probably capcoms choice.

Hunter decaps WERE in the GameCube original. I know because my head got swiped off numerous times. I live in Scotland (it’s this whole other country) so I ended up with the European version. Perhaps they were removed from the US and/or Japanese versions. Regardless, all the HD ports and remasters after that had decaps removed. The same went for RE4 btw
i remember reading somewhere that on the original resident evil on the ps1 you could get Rebecca killed off by a hunter and she loses her head and Chris falls to his knees and yells Rebecca,Not sure if it was added to the GameCube version of Resident evil because I used have that game for the GameCube and I would always kill off the hunter attacking Rebecca. In the updated versions it was censored the hunter hits Rebecca in the throat and you only see the shadow with her blood hitting the wall
The "We wanted to stick to original" Is what I Imagine what Shinji said to the Staff and fans when there was no third scenario, in which you play coop Jill and Chris(re0 came out in same year as remake and was made on the same engine, couldn't they have, i dunno copied the code or whatever to add a coop mode in Re hd?) and you witness the True ending in which Jill, Chris, Barry and Rebbeca escape. Either A) He didn't want to put effort into it as it would "complicate" the game, as in I doubt making that third scenario would be so easy.
Maybe should have left them but for the extra outfits
The taunts seemed more fitting for Devil May Cry then Resident Evil. Kinda deja vu to think about considering DMC was born out of a scrapped version of Resident Evil 4.
I say that having an option is everything.
Eh you could just not use them if they might’ve been optional. If they were required possibly but they could match the characters personality.
@@Otakonstar makes sense, I had a subscription to GI back then. Good to know that I wasn’t the only one who felt misled by that article
No joke was thinking about rewatching your old content for my resident evil fix
Never even realized they removed the head getting cut off by the hunters. I love this game but that is so stupid
RE1-remake is the best remake of any game, ever made. I wish Capcom would apply the very same formula to RE2 and RE3, but nooooope!

I personally think re darkside chronicles did a much better job at "reimagining" re2's story.
In terms of content, re2 remake felt like it needed 1-2 more years.
In terms of the plot and characters, they just fucked up.
Oh and I love how their excuse to not have campaign A and B was to make the story more streamlined and consistent. And it was anything but consistent.
@@RiasatSalminSami yeah for the 4 yrs they had to make it they sure didnt show 4 yrs worth of progress 😑
Ah man! The new enemy placement (spiders in the mansion 😳) and new areas and taunts...this stuff should all be added in re-releases. Perfect excuse to justify buying the same game 4 times! Great vid mate
I never knew about the unused areas or the taunts, you learn something new every day! Love your videos, always brings me a smile!
I could be remembering this wrong but I'm sure the decapitations on the European version for the GameCube was left in. I distinctly remember getting my head taken off while playing this as a kid.
I am playing the europea versión. No decapitation.
I would have loved the flamethrower being in more of the game tbh, Chris lacks any "Unique" weapon outside the 3 rooms the Flamethrower is in.
I remember spending like 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get the flamethrower out of the caves, and then I looked it up and died inside.
I could just see the Crimson Heads watching Jill do her Tai Bo 😂
Thanks scorepn your content is the best! Really brings me back to the awesome gaming times in my life!
Love that you’re using the outbreak soundtrack!
my biggest and probably only complaint about the remake is the infinite rocket launcher.
The rain effect was the most beautiful detail.
Nice video man, i was missing this kind of content on your channel.

5:37 Merry X-Mas, you made my day ScorePN. Don't worry, we just need to get down to business with mod creators
The RE remake holds up so good even to this day. I knew it was special from day 1.
It's a shame the 2 and 3 remake weren't this perfect. Og 2 is still my fav RE/game of all time. This one is my 2nd fav REgame
I still kind of wish they would remake RE1 yet again like 2 and 3. I'd love to play this claustrophobic setting in a third person perspective, and I'd love to see the mansion in new angles.
Plus the 2 and 3 remakes are just really fun.
Merry Christmas to you Score PN.
It truly is just them thinking the players love the game series enough to keep buying and ignoring things like that when RE 3 Remake was total ass, Uncharted Zombie edition.

great video scorp, keep up the good work.
Excellent video dude!😎 Happy Christmas!☃️👍
The Kung-Fu Jill animation was cut, because the silliness breaks the tense immersion of the setting. I suppose it could have been kept for replay runs, after the player completed the game, but I can see why they didn't want it in.
It would’ve been nice to see some of these additions to the game but REmake is just perfect. It’s still my favorite game. Not just in the series but in video games in general. I can’t imagine the game without Lisa Trevor. She’s definitely on my top five villains from RE. Her story is equally terrifying and tragic.
Its one of my fav RE games. Its the best remake of the series
One possibility is that they changed the enemy placement to not spoil the scares. But I totally agree they should add a mode with random enemy placement (or at least a different one akin to the Director's Cut).
The remake of the first game still amaze me.
@@StuTubed It worked for RE6, which outsold this by a very large margin.
@@monkeybone1080 RE6, the game that was heavily criticised for its lack of identity, for being overcomplicated, trying to appeal to too many different player types, and a departure from the classic RE formula.
@@StuTubed Yet it sold increadably well and is still regarded as having some of the best gameplay in any Capcom title, let alone RE. Not to mention that it still has a solid fanbase, especially for its Mercs mode. Basically what I'm saying is it's not black and white, that adding in optional melee options wouldn't have broken REmake 1 or even changed perception of it.
@@monkeybone1080 RE6 might have been a good game, but it's not a survival horror game, it's action horror. Older RE titles are known for forcing players to strategise through lack of resources. It would not have been the same if players could just punch and shove their way through the game.
That shot of Jill kicking had me so excited. I spent hours trying to figure out how to kick (no internet). I was so disappointed when I realized melee attacks weren’t in the game.
The burning chapel as well as the stairs and forest is from RE4 prototype with the Black fog enemy created by Wesker.
imagine if jill's funny kicks did damage or stunned zombies
that'd be a cool new game+ feature
I mean it's pretty easy to know why certain things were removed. I mean those areas you could easily assume that it's either because they didn't finish them in time or in testing whatever areas they were just didn't feel good or fit.
Spider in that hallway with the stairwell makes sense because of the bug room down the hall upstairs
Lisa Trevor is one of the most important parts of the story
It’s such a shame the unused areas had so much detail to them that went unseen for years.
Memory is hazy but I think the original had a version with the hunter decapitation removed too.
Might have been a regional censorship thing.
Imagine a RE game with randomize enemies, you could either open a door and find a single zombie or a pack of hunters while you are only armed with a handgun and a knife.
That'd be even more terrifying than the original, imagine being chased by Lisa Trevor instead of just a zombie.
You can do that just now with a fan made mod. This mod can randomize items, enemies and even doors. There can be miltyple tyrants across locations too
Funny, I just started replaying this last night. What a weird idea they had for the remake initially though, changed enemy placement would be a good surprise
The GameCube RE remake was so visually impressive at the time it came out. It looks better than some games that have come out today
Your voice is so pro for these videos dude 💋
Your final nods to 2 and 3 remake are AWESOME! They channel perfectly the frustration with Capcom's stupid decisions!
I like to think the taunt was something they were testing but ended up utilizing in devil may cry instead
Giant Spiders jumping through the windows instead of the dogs. Sounds both ridiculous and terrifying.
Wish they added the gore back with the remastered release, at least on non Japanese versions.
This is why I still prefer the og. But re1 remake overall is a better and possibly the best remake we will ever get from Capcom.
RE 4,5,6 needs to be more gore and more horror RE games and survival horror ,not childish actions, respect your opinion!
It’s the best RE game
I can tell you with almost 99% certainty that Remake on the GC, and maybe even the Wii, had decapitations on the final build of NTSC-U copies.
This must be a Remaster change... which I didn't even know about because I've yet to get decapitated in the Remasters all these years, but now I know.
Guess modding will be the answer for this one on PC, which is the best version anyway... only version to allow you to run at 60FPS instead of just 30FPS and the randomizer mods are a ton of fun.

I very much miss the decaps in resident evil remake. It really made me that much more afraid to die lol
I just realized watching this that the entire time you’re inside the mansion, it’s storming and thundering outside but when you go outside it’s dry and no thunder. Maybe I’m wrong idk but it seems unlikely🤷🏻♂️
I never noticed that
It could be that the storm was on the distance and only the thunder and the noise can be seen and heard?
This remake of RE1 was awesome and perfect.
I remember seeing a screenshot of raccoon forest of a dead body wrapped up in spiderwebbs.
RE1 remake was perfect! So many good memories and sadly i don’t think we will ever get such game from Capcom again.
The extra animation they should have gave Chris while standing for a minute was to spark up a cigarette like he did in the original uncut version
Qué grande el ScorePN con más un video sobre Resident Evil
I don´t think those are taunts, it looks like a motion capture testing. And the laser is to test de wall hit boxes/boundaries. The unused animations are engine tests to show off the lightning efects and the high FPS animation.
On the removal of decapitation, I do agree with other comments about the censorship boards but I believe that Nintendo is to blame here. RER was originally released on Game Cube & Nintendo is to video games as Disney is to films. Remember when Mortal Kombat released on SNES? It had no blood compared to the Sega version.
Before REmake Code Veronica censored decapitation in both character deaths and zombie kills. I don't think it had anything to do with Nintendo.
Yea I don't buy that explanation personally. Nintendo by this point had published conkers bad fur day and perfect dark, so there was no reason for them to censor it in the west. I think it was probably capcoms choice.

How's your day been scorePN? Good video, nicely edited.
Or B) Shinji takes so much pride in his script writting(Might as well have hired George Lucas to write the story), the Staff barely convinced him to add the Lisa Trevor side story.
ScorePN, have u ever played RE1: Remake of GAMECUBE? I ask u this because in all versions of the RE1: Remake of GAMECUBE, the beheading by the HUNTERS is present.

From the top of my head the glaring issue is how the campaigns overlap one another which completely kills how the story (or lack thereof) is presented.
