Love that this franchise is still getting coverage, close to a decade after its second and final entry. Speaks to the ongoing interest in more Prototype.
Dude current gen prototype would blow kids minds today. Especially prototype 2 I liked mercer in prototype 1 because he wasn’t inherently evil at first but heller in prototype 2 I loved simply because he didn’t give a shit, he just wanted revenge and his voice actor nailed it. Plus the soundtrack and games lore was intense
Finally! In my opinion, the Prototype series is heavily underrated. It features one of the best game premises and yet there still isn't anything like it.
What made it special was the wall running, creating biomass spikes from the ground, consuming, not as your typical good or bad guy, solid impact when running jumping and falling, gaining memories and appearances after consuming ,equaled unbridled fun compared to modern games. It's unique because most titles these days didn't take inspiration from it, rather they took inspiration from dark souls type of game slow moving clunky combat, because people apparently like difficult gameplay its apparently "fun" for them. The people who liked fast paced games are from 2005 to 2012 gaming era maybe they don't make up a large gaming population anymore.
"there isn't anything like it" Spider-Man Web of Shadows did it 1 year before. InFamous launched in the same year from a more respected studio with more polish, lmao.
@@splash_067 the movies?….eh much fun as I had with em I can’t really argue there (even if Mercer was kind of a blank slate). The comics? Oh naw Venom kept getting cooler since the damn 90’s, by now after the recent donny cates run he and his own “world” within marvel are somehow even bigger and better than they’ve ever been before.
@@hounsdjentlow3074 eh if you’re lucky Insomiac could make a Venom expansion game after Spider-Man 2 like they did for Miles for the first (assuming the symbiote survives the story and the possibility gets popular enough reception)
The biggest story negative in the second one was the complete dump of the heroic act Mercer took at the end of the first game. Mercer took a nuke out of the city in a helicopter (first! suck it Nolan Batman) to save the city from being leveled. He could have just left the city to blow up and flew away completely safe in a helicopter, but instead he did something that he thought would kill him to save everyone. To have him just come back and purposely infect the city and decimate everything was a big slap in the face to the first game. I have always said I felt like the Mercer in the second game was something completely different than the Mercer from the first. He was amoral in the first game to individual people but he was also actively destroying the other nodes of virus to help humanity as a whole. A better story would have been to have several chunks of Mercer to have survived the blast, all of them having different personalities but only one being the true almost heroic Alex Mercer. The story with Heller looked like it was going to head that way for a bit but then it suddenly took a nosedive into "bwahahaha I am just evil because I am evil" motivations and it really stank. I tell people to this day "if you liked the story of the first one then give the second one a pass. If you just want to destroy things the second one is great."
Yeah but see it makes sense because they made a comic where Alex lives in the woods with a family for a little while but then the family gets killed so now he HATES HUMANITY GRRRRR Nah it's still stupid as hell, you're absolutely right.
@@mjc0961 I agree and they should’ve at least kept going deeper into mercer’s trilogy. Making him a villain I enjoyed because of the events happening to him, leading him to lose faith in humanity. If that story was going to come about then making into a 3 series game, could’ve allowed them to really delve into his story, weather that’s into decent or a hero like being?
I like the idea of the separated Alex personalities. That could've made for a great, full origin story that could've fueled a long standing series of stories to come afterwords. Ditching him as just an evil villain to get consumed was like shooting themselves in the foot narratively. They should soft reboot the IP starting from the ending of P1
@@TheForbidden_1ne agreed i mean i was more assuming him having like god knows how many memories from other people and regenerating from a puddle of blood just turned him into some messed up hive mind
The first Prototype game was so badass. Even rebought the bundle of 1 & 2 on newer consoles. Shame we're most likely never going to get another installment. Still load up the first game sometimes just to slash people in half while running through a crowd.
@@Justathought81 PC don't need remasters like consoles do. Unlike on consoles, on PC we have higher resolution and widescreen patch if those are required.
@@gustafadolf3065 its not really a remaster, its kinda just a port, i should know cuz i bought the bundle too. Really enjoyed both games but there is no graphical or gameplay enhancements, so there's no reason to sell them on PC
you guys probably know this already but Prototype was supposed to be Raimi's Spider-Man 4 before the movie got cancelled you can actually see the beta version of Spider-Man 4 and it literally has animations from both Web of Shadows AND Prototype, it could've been amazing
Activision needs to sell the Prototype IP to someone or hire a new studio to make Prototype 3, though I don't like the latter option. Please, Prototype has so much potential to become a franchise but Activision killed it, along with Radical entertainment :(
Radical killed it. Second game alienated fans of first one by basically randomizing story elements and character traits. So it ended up being far from success of first title. Contrast it with what InFamous 2 had done. Or a massive jump up in quality that was Darksiders 2.
@ They made Alex a typical cartoon villain in Prototype 2. I'm fine with Alex and Heller having a clash of perspective with Alex taking a more radical and "the end justify the means" approach, but what they did with Alex was just bad.
If whose IP I could sell, I would propose two possible developers, the first one will be Digital Extreme, because most of the team from the first game is there, and the second would be Platinum Games or Itsuno's team, because since I played it for the first time from the first game I always thought that it had all to be a Stylish Action Game but Openworld, it only lacked one adjustments in its mechanics.
@@nomad123ad It's even worse knowing that they made a comic book that explained why he went evil. Basically he fell in love with a girl and she broke his heart so he took it out on humanity 🤣
@@LeeEverett1 that's missing a lot of context.... it wasn't because the woman broke his heart, it's that he lost faith in humanity because humans only think about themselves, the woman only served to confirm what he was already thinking
One of the most underrated and under-appreciated series. There were so many different elements of these games that were awesome. The memory consumption reliant storytelling really made you invested in finding the next person and figuring out how they fit in the bigger picture. The crazy powers were super effective and almost all of them had a use (I barely used that armor power, that one sucked). Love love this game series. I hope it makes a comeback.
The movement controls in Prototype 1 are definitely superior, and Alex feels way better while Heller feels like unmaneouverabe truck in comparison. While powers are definitely more fun to play around in P2, they removed a lot of good and cool stuff from the variety of unarmed attacks, wall-latching, wall-sliding, so many cool little things from P1, parkour included, and car-destruction physics, and Musclemass, Groundspike, etc.. Even maxed out, Heller's movement is maybe half of Alex's speed, definitely on walls at least. The story went weird with plot-armored main characters. While the missions in P2 are much more refined and more fun to play, the open world suffered horribly. And open world shenanigans is the main drive for open-world games. I was so hoping Prototype 3 would combine the best parts from both games, but that was never to happen...
Yes I loved the nuance of the movement and combat mechanics of the first game. 2 unfortunately pulled back and streamlined some of those subtle mechanics I enjoyed so much
1 is a way better game. For what it showed on screen too, it looked pretty good. If they remastered the graphics and fixed the engine bugs Prototype 1 would sell really well.
the fact that armor is gone from second game and heller basically can't hit with his fists without switching to powers is lame as hell taking mercer and decimating entire outpost with your bare hands felt awesome
13:25 Pariah is the best candidate for the Job, the son of Elizabeth Greene would be perfect for Mercer's motivation in the sequel. Pariah is literally the "Ultimate Lifeform" Blackwatch has been trying to create during the events in Hope, Idaho 1969 with the Redlight Virus. Still such a great idea to spark a sequel with in my opinion, hopefully they continue with it in the future because Pariah has a lot potential.
Still, probably the best thing that came out of the whole Prototype / Infamous "freud" was that both teams took up Yahtzee's challenge and created amazing unflattering art of eachother's main characters.
@@jmarra07 its quite very impressive gameplay than 1 although lack much of the powers from Prototype 1 but still an improvement of 1 Plus, the game intent to give players the feel of being an invincible monster that can fight an entire army Prototype 1 does have that but still you can be pinned down easily by Super Soldiers, Hunters, even the army
I wouldn't say underrated if its still talked about. More of its good that it stand the test of time but most of them are overshadowed due to years passing or some problems arised through the years.
I loved prototype as a teenager. Prototype 2 was my first platinum trophy on the PS3. I remember spending hours upon hours playing that game. Loved every second of it
This game was the first game I played where you literally leveled up to god mode status that I loved. Great story, great action and an awesome video. Thanks for the history!
The gameplay was not worse in the first game tho. I remember playing the 1st game unlocking all movements and absolutely kicking ass in amazing ways. Then I installed the 2nd game downloaded a save with all the powers unlocked, and was totally disappointed with the gameplay. The helicopter executions and maybe some other things made Prototype 2 a little better in terms of gameplay, but all the cool movements the 1st game had were missing, and made Prototype 2 disappointing.
@@soulbrother5435 I had completed it a year before. I knew all the game mechanics anyway. And everybody who has played the games knows the first game has way more movements.
I have been waiting for this for a long time prototype was the first game that made me feel like a total baddass and powerful. I wish for the prototype franchise revival!
Now that Microsoft has bought Activision, I REALLY hope they work on the Prototype franchise again. Just imagine all the insanity in current gen graphics and mechanics my god that would be so good.
Good idea. This could be their "answer" to Spiderman ps4/ps5 in a way, a free roaming game where you can do all types of crazy stuff to get around the City.
@@shagaru1234 Sure because those 2 IP were MASSIVE during thier respective hayday. That's why they want to bring them back. Prototype just flopped. Why would they spend money on that?
Biggest map, most moves, aside from the graphics that was the pinacle. The last hulk game which prototype was based on had better graphics, but it felt just like a shrunken down version of ultimate destruction.
This game was definitely one of my favorites back in high school such a instant classic it was such a amazing game, it's games like this why people love games so much among countless other reasons.
Prototype 2 is one of my favorite games of all times. Just pure fun and much more polished than the first. But seriously, play on hard difficulty. That's the way it was meant to be played.
I'm so glad this video exists, even more so that your channel in specific decided to cover it. Alex Mercer is still the most badass looking character in my head and the franchise - first in specific - is one of a kind. Was truly something special to be there at the time of release as MW2 was getting so much coverage for "No Russian" while Prototype exists. Radical just kind of disappeared, took a fair bit of digging just to find how they shut down. Great video!
If there's a game (or duology of games) that deserve a remake, this is it, not just a port or remaster. I'm no game developer, nor I really aspire to be one, but I'm more than open to the idea of working on a remake of Prototype, my favorite game of all time.
It was so fun how reactive the world was. I spent hours fighting either alongside Blackwatch or the Infected and loved watching either of the two factions establishing dominance due to my actions.
I know the cliche thing to do is to say “I was just playing this” But I legit was playing the HD collection yesterday as I lost my job recently and have no wifi and Xbox is weird when trying to play ur games offline and this is one of the few games that will work for me rn. And I have over 400 games installed lol. I wish this series would come back I was having a lot of fun just watching the parkour animations while running . This game was ahead of the curve . Was far better than infamous in so many ways
After spending half my summer pretty much with the series and 100% it. We need a Prototype 3 or something like it, as Activision would surely mess it up again so hopefully the rights are acquired by someone else. The gameplay of both games are amazing and still better than most games today. The more recognition the series gets the better.
Dam I never knew activision got the rights for prototype. They did pretty good with the Spyro remasters so here’s hoping lightning strikes twice if they remaster prototype 1 and 2.

I remember I enjoyed playing Prototype 2, but it had one major issue on PC: the dreaded Memory Leak. It'll be very playable at the start of the game, but as you progress and run the game longer, things will start to slow down and eventually grind to a halt until the game crashed. It turns out, since Activision fired all the staff due to disappointing preorder/initial sales numbers, no one was left working as after sales support to work on patches. I believe this was never resolved. Note that I didn't have strong connections on the first game, so I didn't care what Alex Mercer had become in the second game, but the cinematics had improved like the same level as CoD4 and it was interesting to me at that time.

These games were and are so incredibly under appreciated. I grew up on this franchise, I spent hours in both games when I was a kid-preteen. I miss it so much.
I still do a playthought Prototype 1 now and then. I have an itch that no other game seems to be able to scratch. Honestly, I'm kinda scared if someone would pick up and make Prototype 3. As it seems to be a pattern: It would be this wacky, colourfull hack-n-slash with coocy quirky characters and crazy superpowers (kinda something like Sunset Overdrive). Because studios nowadays are deathly afraid of being serious, or dare I say: EDGY. But Prototype needs to be edgy. It's not edgy enough, actually. Prototype 3 should be more like a sandbox action-horror game that would take itself extremely seriously and would have so much edge that the final boss fight blasts Linkin Park.
there is someting great in games from 2000-2012 period and this is the fact that they are serious games with mostly dark, dirty world. No everything is colorfull and 'super duper' whatever.
It doesn't need to be edgy, but it also needs to realize that the scale doesn't work without affecting status quo. Status quo goes out of the window. Get the game set in 2030, two decades after the outbreaks, make Pariah playable character, make Mercer ghost in the hivemind, _claim_ that Heller is dead(well, we need a midgame twist, right?), show us that Evolved had infiltrated all governments and institutions on the globe. Don't be afraid to piss of chinese censorship or some minority, rip the world to pieces. Claim Taiwan is independent, tell that the new replacement of Gentek is overseeing growing forests in Sahara, Gobbi, Mojave and Australia, claim that Korea was unified, mention the seas full of genetically altered algae to the point that oceans aren't blue from the orbit, claim that Russia partially broke apart and federalized with Kazakhstan, make news mention recreation of extinct species and new types of farm animals, make California and Texas independent, add debates about human cloning into the ambient radio. This game can't have status quo of our world when it separated so heavily in 2008. And neither can it be simple "we are greater then humans so we need to rule them" story. Because that one is dumb beyond belief. Food? Evolved don't need to eat humans to survive, any organics will suffice. And something prepared by chef in a restaurant will taste better then a dude from the street. Knowledge? It's far more productive to integrate a person into the network to get all their skills and potential future inventions then kill them and get a glimpse. Superiority? Crocodiles and sharks are also superior and that ended up being an evolutionary trap for them. A species that can fly can't invent a plane. Or write a poem about wishing they could fly. No stimuli, no development. So instead you get a symbiotic society very focused on making sure that humans don't destroy themselves with nukes or other foolishness. And so on and on. Status quo kills fiction:(
Honestly, i think a middle-ish ground can be met, don't get me wrong i still want that edgyness i live for it, but I think prototype could benefit from some self-awareness y'know keep the edgyness but acknowledging it, owning it, and kinda making some fun of it, don't get me wrong i don't want jokes been thrown left and right but a bit of dark humour here and there can make quite a compelling experience, Prototype 2 proved that it can be a little funny at times without sacrificing a dark tone (like those scientist that tried to bribe Heller to spare them, or that one blackwatch soldier who swore he shot Jimmy Fallon) And as an sidenote, have you seen what the new Final Fantasy is doing rn? Is so unapologetically edgy that it comes off as endearing in a twisted way, the protagonist spends most of the time rambling about how much he hate the bad guy and wishes to shove his boot up his ass, is so edgy that it comes off as funny especially compared to the rest of characters, there's this chick that tells the protagonist her personal tragedy and backstory, and the protagonist responds by saying "bullshit" turning around and blasting fucking Limp Bizkit, that is a type of edgyness that comes off as endearing and likeable even for the general public, as in there's no way that was not intentional
Ugh, can we please not go into cringe edgy? I'd rather have the kooky quirky stuff than cringe edgy. Good edgy is hard to do well, and it certainly doesn't involve Linkin Park. You're basically asking them to make Prototype 3 with the "edge" level of Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic Forces. No f%%%ing thanks. I'd sooner have them do the kooky thing like Saints Row 2022 than go into cringe edgy.
@@TheArklyte "Food? Evolved don't need to eat humans to survive, any organics will suffice. And something prepared by chef in a restaurant will taste better then a dude from the street." Bro I don't think they care what their food tastes like when they eat it via tentacle absorption.
to this day i keep going back to playing prototype 1. Is just one of my favorite games and so far i feel like no other game ever gave me the same amount of freedom and speed pt1 has
Man.. watching this makes me glad i own the biohazard bundle physically on ps4. Such a gem of a series.👌👌 they NEED to make more games in this franchise.
They just don’t make games like this anymore when I think back to games that made you feel like a boss it was force unleashed, hulk ultimate destruction, and prototype, these games are a play ground not overly complicated I miss it. Prototype on modern hardware it would satisfy so many crowds not just the OGs these games had a certain charm because you slowly build up and by the end you are just an unstoppable force of nature. Imagine this game with modern graphics and a modern destruction system and they expand on the whole “consume become” aspect I truly hope someone in the future sees the potential
Imagine Xbox acquires the rights to prototype. We'd have big superhero exclusives for each system, but more importantly a huge ass budget and really powerful console to boot.
Loved the first game, liked the second one. Just a glorious celebration of carnage and mayhem. Alex truly felt like a superpowered being among mere mortals and I spent as much time racking up pointless destruction stats as I did doing the storyline. But you can see some lazy design too. There is a lot of timed events or 'race' events but the controls aren't very precise and often times I lost these events due to the game not responding and it costing me time. Same problem early AssCreed games had where the cool parkour sometimes launched you the wrong way or hung you up so you lose the event. When not under a timer restriction and you can just wander the city, Prototype was amazing. Just getting around with a fully upgraded Alex was so much fun. Like the older Spiderman games where web slinging around town was a blast. I still have both on my Steam library but haven't played them in ages. Might have to re-install just for the giggles.
The Prototype Franchise pulled "The Last of US part 2" on it's fanbase and KILLED itself. It shows on the sells and Radical pretty much DESERVES the fate handed to them treating their fans and such a way. History repeats a decade later though with Naughty Dog.
Bruh, what are you on about? Prototype 2 is great, even improve some of Prototype 1 gameplay although lack of powers compared to Prototype 1 Plus, Prototype 2 is great to carry on its comics and Prototype 1, Zeus being a villain does makes sense since he is a newborn intelligent species, not the real human Alex Mercer who have amnesia Heller being a powerful host for the Blacklight Virus is great since Alex isnt a fully potential host for the virus yet still powerful enough same level as James Heller
@@eizlaniskandar7946 the comic SUCK hard balls, do you think anyone cared about the Comic when playing The Darkness game? of course not, that tripe is always poorly written dog water. It's a bit interesting hearing about gaming controversies in the past when I was to young to play/ didn't know much about gaming back then. Also interesting to hear groups like G4 (I only recently found out about them due to some viral rant). P.s you sound like the voice you would hear on documentaries about science
Really wish that Hulk: Ultimate Destruction got more of a mention in this than just some B-Roll in the background. It's influence on Prototype really can't be denied. They share nearly the same DNA, and Prototype originally started as a sequel to Hulk before moving on to being an original IP. Hell, they even share the same animations. I'm not even talking "they look super similar", I'm talking the exact same data recycled from Hulk to Prototype.
@@WaddyMuters That's not even by the same studio. Ultimate Destruction IS. Ultimate Destruction was where they revamped their entire engine to work with open world, and where they made like 90% of the moves that are carried over to Prototype. Hell, it's even where they made their traversal system. Look at videos of Ultimate Destruction and Prototype side by side, and the similarities are uncanny. They're siblings in every meaning of the word. Some random Hulk game by another studio would never come close.
Prototype was an amazing game with a compelling storyline..... That promptly got sh@t on by it's 'sequel'. I realize that Alex was never the 'good guy'....but he never struck me as full blown sociopathic / psycho. Maybe it's just me...
Alex was definitely not a "good guy" tho, remember all the time you used poor civilians as surfboard because you tapped the wrong button, and Alex chose the closest target to ride on. Or the unnecessary collateral
He was already doubting humanity as a whole by the end of the first game, the comic book set after P1 just solidified that. He travelled the world and realised humanity sucks, the girl he fell in love with betraying him was just the final straw, and by 'betray' it's not like she just disregarded him or didn't reciprocate the love, she full on shot him in the head and attempted to rob him, of course not knowing his true nature. Kinda fucked up. Radical did a poor job at displaying him as more than just a psycho. Whilst he did somewhat become one, he actually had some pretty genuine motivations, albeit pretty skewed.
Man I wish we would get a new prototype game This was such an awesome IP, it was ahead of its time Imagine what the team could do on the unreal engine 5 !! One can only dream
I guess the biggest problem of Prototype 2 was that it cut in half the best of Prototype 1 - variety of moveset. I remember clearly the first day I launched prototype 2 & played it through some hours, I felt like it was lite-version of the predecessor (I clearly spent more time passing 1st game than second). I played 3 times 1st game with different year intervals & still thinking to play it again, as for 2nd game, I'll play it for sure for second time, but still thinking of 1st game as priority.
The second game had a very uninsteresting and generic plot in comparison to the first game, which was nearly half the reason why the first title was so unusual and which gave the protagonist its drive and motivation. Radical should have tied down the first and second game more explicitly by outright declaring Heller's daughter as Pariah instead of just subtly implying that fact. Plus, having Mercer disclose new and unreleased information to Heller during their fight could possibly generate a cliffhanger which would serve as a starting point for a third entry in the series.
Nah the first game was also just as generic and uninteresting.......Its the reason why the games didn't sell very well and ended up killing the franchise after 2
Except, you know, we have actually seen Pariah. Let's list the changes - Pariah is forgotten, Dana being infected is forgotten, every side character is forgotten, Mercer does 180 on their character and does nothing for over a year. The obvious problem is that there never were Prototype 2. There is no connection to plot or characters, it's like as if another company had taken up the title 20 years later, made their own game, realized it was crap and then tried to hastily shoehorn connection to previous title in the last days of development.
@@TheArklyte I agree that it feels like the characters had been in limbo for over a year between 1 and 2, but we hadn't actually seen Pariah. The first game doesn't mention the child's sex and explains how it was ultra top secret information, so they completely fucked up there by not explicitly tying the titles. Even if the plot was kept as the garbage it is, but at the very least offered some point of start for a third entry or resurrecting title later, it would have at least done it's stereotypical job of second entries always being the worst of trilogies.
Loved the first game. Absolutely brilliant game. I have the second sitting there, waiting to be played. But I would definitely play a 3rd game with a modern engine and everything that comes with!
I always thought that having the protagonist from the first game as the antagonist in the second game was super cool since I get to witness the villain's route first and when I play the hero, I already know the force I'm reckoning with since I built and lived that character. Very few games ever do that.
17:36 "Failing to improve on weak foundation." 1)solid story with clear potential sequel hooks that give a way to explore it more is a weak foundation? Heck, I wonder what would your videos of Infamous(the only mistake of Infamous 2 was that it was all compressed into a single game, instead of making a trilogy. I'm not a fan of trilogy format, but duologies are worse;) and Arkham tell then? 2)undermining the whole premise by scrapping ALL story elements and characters of previous game on purpose is now labeled as failure to improve instead of active sabotage?
I remember rage quitting when they pulled the 'extra hard boss fight rental.' "Wow are you max level and can empty an enemy bass like it's nothing here is the world's worst camera angel and a dude with a grenade launcher that can 3 shot you."
Ah yes, main problem of such games - insistence of devs to mess with controls and camera angles during boss fights. Don't you feel great about running into an invisible wall because a peace of trash on the ground counts like a full sized structure?;) Lorewise one can argue that: 1)your upgrades don't fully represent Mercer's rise in power through the story; 2)Cross is specifically trained, equipped and augmented to combat Runners. Especially since he came to the fight prepared with the "cure" that YOU helped to create. There is a web of intrigue target somewhere between the park and the hive that describes the preparation. Cancer wasn't their only idea and there is no guarantee that others weren't also tried; 3)while D-codes get prepared as a result of Blacklight research, Carnival 1 and Carnival 2 were also human enhancement programs bAsed on Redlight. Failed ones, yes, but Green, Runners and Pariah weren't the only results. And D-codes bionics(yes, bionics, armored spine and skull, injectors, subdermal armor that was grafted to their body) weren't dependent of Blacklight timeline either. So it's safe to assume that Cross was a predecessor to D-codes, who was specifically prepared to face you. For some reason people assume he is "just a guy" the moment you finally explain to them that he is neither Pariah, nor Supreme Hunter. He isn't. Otherwise you would have fought dozens of them:D
The worst part about this franchise fading away is that, aside from it's spiritual predecessor Hulk:UD, there's absolutely nothing else like it . Nothing to fill the void.
You forgot about Hulk:Ultimate destruction which was the blueprint for Prototype. The gameplay was very similar and/or identical to Prototype. This is a genuine idea expanded to a different game. Hulk:UD should have been mentioned more.
Not only that, but a complete dumbing down of Mercer's intelligence and and a horendous motivation for him to become a literal Sinestro just after 4 so-so comics.
@@JohnMkrv he was a cliche that replaced Mercer. that's it. not just replacing the previous main character, but having us kill them sucks enough as-is because most players will have formed an attachment to that character over the course of the previous game. it gets exponentially worse when the replacement can be summarized as "i lost my family, fuck the world, fuck you" without missing a single other character trait. in any other game, he would have been a short lived side character with that little depth to him.
@@Mythda heller also admits he is a monster just like mercer he jokes before he kills someone I think he is very fun enjoyable plus I like that he surpasses his creator
Prototype 2 is underrated. Play it on a harder difficulty and it’s instantly very rewarding. The game has DOOM Eternal drip before DOOM Eternal was even a thing. The characterization of Heller is a little cliche but in the best way. The whole game and aesthetic embraces its campy-ness and goes full Evil Dead. Best sandbox sequel imo.
Heller does feel a lot more fleshed out than Mercer though. In the first game, he didn’t actually have too much going for him character-wise other than edge and antipathy.
A Prototype 3 on 8th gen would've been amazing. I was looking forward to finding out more about Pariah, who was referenced in Prototype 1. They should've made that the plot of the sequel though. Activision's murder of Radical was a tragedy, they made a lot of great games either way.
Love Prototype to this day. Alex Mercer is one of my favorite video game characters. I was one of the people who didn't like the idea of hunting and killing Alex Mercer in Prototype 2, but I never considered skipping the game. While I never beat the game - didn't get into the story - I enjoyed what little I played.
Gotta give the second a try, it never really crossed my radar at the time. First game was amazing though. I know critics are critics, but the way the game looked and controlled was never off-putting in the least for me; gameplay was too much fun to care. I'd recommend both the Prototype videos on Purposeless Rabbitholes channel for anyone who wants to spend more time remembering how bomb these games were
Regardless of how similar and at the same time different both Prototype and Infamous are it is amazing that two games in that vein were both in development at the same time and neither was influenced by the other. I am sure there are other examples of such games being in development too, just shows you that eventually two groups of people can come up with similar concepts and not necessarily be ripping anyone else off.
Love that this franchise is still getting coverage, close to a decade after its second and final entry. Speaks to the ongoing interest in more Prototype.

Finally! In my opinion, the Prototype series is heavily underrated. It features one of the best game premises and yet there still isn't anything like it.
What do you mean by game promise?
@@NikHem343 Premise.
@silenceyouidiot I see you're a man of culture as well.
"there isn't anything like it"
Spider-Man Web of Shadows did it 1 year before.
InFamous launched in the same year from a more respected studio with more polish, lmao.
I wish radical entertainment was never shut down.
Dont we all
I wish Pandemic Studios was never shut down.
They could have made a great Deadpool game
I wish Visceral was still here
I wish Activision wasn't greedy
If anything, Mercer's antipathy towards his fellow New-Yorkers only made him seem more grounded and realistic.
i think any New-Yorker would also like to DDT their fellow man off of a skyscraper after dealing with their subway system and the occupants within.
The 'Venom' game we all got without asking for 🥰🤣
This is better than venom
No offence but wrong. Ive wanted a venom game like spiderman 2019 for decades but with an 18 rating. Itll never happen but its wanted :(
@@splash_067 the movies? *YES!*
Yeah but see it makes sense because they made a comic where Alex lives in the woods with a family for a little while but then the family gets killed so now he HATES HUMANITY GRRRRR
Nah it's still stupid as hell, you're absolutely right.
I always assumed mercer in 2 was more virus than human personality wise unlike in 1 where while he was a virus, he still had his personality

If they remastered the graphics and fixed the engine bugs Prototype 1 would sell really well.
never say never
the fact that armor is gone from second game and heller basically can't hit with his fists without switching to powers is lame as hell
taking mercer and decimating entire outpost with your bare hands felt awesome
Yea I loved the movement in 1. It's probably the only game that has managed to twist my stomach when running up a building or falling from a height.
I always thought that if a new Prototype were to release PARIAH had to be involved as either the antagonist or protagonist of the story.
Pariah is supposed to be in p2 but the Devs changed their mind

I remember I enjoyed playing Prototype 2, but it had one major issue on PC: the dreaded Memory Leak. It'll be very playable at the start of the game, but as you progress and run the game longer, things will start to slow down and eventually grind to a halt until the game crashed.

Still waiting for a third game :( The first one is sooooo much fun!
Status quo kills fiction:(
Honestly, i think a middle-ish ground can be met, don't get me wrong i still want that edgyness i live for it, but I think prototype could benefit from some self-awareness y'know keep the edgyness but acknowledging it, owning it, and kinda making some fun of it, don't get me wrong i don't want jokes been thrown left and right but a bit of dark humour here and there can make quite a compelling experience, Prototype 2 proved that it can be a little funny at times without sacrificing a dark tone (like those scientist that tried to bribe Heller to spare them, or that one blackwatch soldier who swore he shot Jimmy Fallon)
And as an sidenote, have you seen what the new Final Fantasy is doing rn?

They objectively don't need to make more. Objectively speaking no video game is needed.
I remember playing the first one back in the day,i had never heard of it before. What a fantastic game man
Man, I really miss these games. I remember I 100% the games multiple times, such a great expirience like no other games could give a player!
One of the best games I’ve ever played.
Oh YEAAAAAH!!! I was hoping you'd cover this franchise.

Prototype 2 is great, even improve some of Prototype 1 gameplay although lack of powers compared to Prototype 1
Plus, Prototype 2 is great to carry on its comics and Prototype 1, Zeus being a villain does makes sense since he is a newborn intelligent species, not the real human Alex Mercer who have amnesia

The second game had a very uninsteresting and generic plot in comparison to the first game,
which was nearly half the reason why the first title was so unusual and which gave the protagonist its drive and motivation.
Word
@@TheArklyte I agree that it feels like the characters had been in limbo for over a year between 1 and 2, but we hadn't actually seen Pariah. The first game doesn't mention the child's sex and explains how it was ultra top secret information, so they completely fucked up there by not explicitly tying the titles. Even if the plot was kept as the garbage it is, but at the very least offered some point of start for a third entry or resurrecting title later, it would have at least done it's stereotypical job of second entries always being the worst of trilogies.
@@Tiramonium We see an image of Pariah in Web of Intrigue. We also have seen it's mother. Idk what you're selling, but I'm not buying that.
Very few games ever do that.
i loved prottotype 1 and 2. Great openworld games. I really wish they made a third one

"Failing to improve on weak foundation."
1)solid story with clear potential sequel hooks that give a way to explore it more is a weak foundation? Heck, I wonder what would your videos of Infamous(the only mistake of Infamous 2 was that it was all compressed into a single game, instead of making a trilogy. I'm not a fan of trilogy format, but duologies are worse;) and Arkham tell then?
2)undermining the whole premise by scrapping ALL story elements and characters of previous game on purpose is now labeled as failure to improve instead of active sabotage?
@@inspectordonut5622 learn to read and then quote me on being fanboy of P2. I'll wait:D
I've been waiting for the is video for so long. Finally!!!!!
Don't you feel great about running into an invisible wall because a peace of trash on the ground counts like a full sized structure?;)
Lorewise one can argue that:
1)your upgrades don't fully represent Mercer's rise in power through the story;
2)Cross is specifically trained, equipped and augmented to combat Runners. Especially since he came to the fight prepared with the "cure" that YOU helped to create. There is a web of intrigue target somewhere between the park and the hive that describes the preparation. Cancer wasn't their only idea and there is no guarantee that others weren't also tried;
3)while D-codes get prepared as a result of Blacklight research, Carnival 1 and Carnival 2 were also human enhancement programs bAsed on Redlight.
"Oh, having fun? Why don't we toss a few rocket launcher dudes in to toss *you* around."
The worst part about this franchise fading away is that, aside from it's spiritual predecessor Hulk:UD, there's absolutely nothing else like it . Nothing to fill the void.
Stupid Activision making unrealistic WW2, you want unrealistic game you already have one it's PROTOTYPE AND WE LOVE IT JUST MAKE PROTOTYPE 3
You forgot about Hulk:Ultimate destruction which was the blueprint for Prototype. The gameplay was very similar and/or identical to Prototype. This is a genuine idea expanded to a different game. Hulk:UD should have been mentioned more.
A great game, made in a time of actual game innovation.
Hulk Ultimate Destruction was one of the best open world games
I remember playing this, had so much fun
This game and the darkness really had somthng special and wished they kept going with the franchise
honestly what killed the prototype series was heller
Not only that, but a complete dumbing down of Mercer's intelligence and and a horendous motivation for him to become a literal Sinestro just after 4 so-so comics.
nah, just corporate earnings-itis.
I prefer Mercer more than Heller, but what's wrong with Heller?
@@JohnMkrv he was a cliche that replaced Mercer. that's it. not just replacing the previous main character, but having us kill them sucks enough as-is because most players will have formed an attachment to that character over the course of the previous game. it gets exponentially worse when the replacement can be summarized as "i lost my family, fuck the world, fuck you" without missing a single other character trait. in any other game, he would have been a short lived side character with that little depth to him.
@@Mythda heller also admits he is a monster just like mercer he jokes before he kills someone I think he is very fun enjoyable plus I like that he surpasses his creator
it's so weird that these games are a decade old. It still feels like they just came out. Life goes by scarily fast the older you get.
I was still in middle school when the first one was released.
Fuck these games were more fun than most new open world action games that's for sure!
Mercer is just the PERFECT protagonist for a game like prototype, replacing him was definitely a major fuck-up.
It's not replacing him that was a fuck up, it was turning him into a villain and killing him off that was the fuck up.
@@LeeEverett1 that version of his is dead for sure. i always assumed there was more than one Alex after the nuke
Heller does feel a lot more fleshed out than Mercer though. In the first game, he didn’t actually have too much going for him character-wise other than edge and antipathy.
@@coolio6855 going to be honest, heller felt like a stereotype
"Coming in at the tail end of America's great recession."
Me, looking back at the last 30 years: "WHICH ONE!?"
A Prototype 3 on 8th gen would've been amazing. I was looking forward to finding out more about Pariah, who was referenced in Prototype 1. They should've made that the plot of the sequel though.
Activision's murder of Radical was a tragedy, they made a lot of great games either way.
8th gen...
Just don't kidding
8:31 thick. How did I miss this as a kid
The gameplay was so fun and kept me going to the end but also the story was under rated. Why was there not a 3rd game???
Love Prototype to this day. Alex Mercer is one of my favorite video game characters.
I was one of the people who didn't like the idea of hunting and killing Alex Mercer in Prototype 2, but I never considered skipping the game. While I never beat the game - didn't get into the story - I enjoyed what little I played.
Gotta give the second a try, it never really crossed my radar at the time. First game was amazing though. I know critics are critics, but the way the game looked and controlled was never off-putting in the least for me; gameplay was too much fun to care.
I'd recommend both the Prototype videos on Purposeless Rabbitholes channel for anyone who wants to spend more time remembering how bomb these games were
Both games were so much fun, i wish there was more prototype games
With the recent purchase with Activision blizzard I hope a remake with happen and 3rd game
