In southern India we have a rice porridge called kanni/kanji (depending on the region) as well
But it only contains salt and people usually have it when they are sick or just feel like eating something light

When I heard you say "Congee", it sounded exactly like a westernized version of saying "Kanji"(natively pronounced as kan-nyee) - WHICH is suprisingly rice porridge that's made in Kerala, a part of South India.
It is flavourless but is delicious to be eaten with salt and shredded coconut as well as along with different side dishes.

When my mom was a kid she works have plain cooked rice with milk and sugar and cinnamon. And, not exactly a porridge, but my favorite drink from Mexico is called Horchata and is sweet with cinnamon.
Now I live in Thailand so rice porridge is a staple in my diet. I always add fish sauce and pepper vinegar to mine which is usually congee with chicken and ginger.
I've been very curious about the differences between joke and congee. So thank you very much for this video 🙏🏻❤️

I am a South Indian (born and raised in the US though) and we pretty much eat the same kind of thing called Kanji (pronounced like kañee) which is pretty much rice porridge but sometimes we ferment it. I just found out that the word congee itself derives from the Tamil (a South Indian language) word Kanji, which is the same word in my language which is called Malayalam. The world is way smaller than we think!

Does anyone know where the dish originated? Or if it’s made all over Asia? Only curious because they have the same name. Always a go to when I’m sick because it’s richer than just broth!

    The Chinese name is 粥.
It doesn’t have to be all rice. 八宝粥 has beans 🫘 and nuts 🌰 in it.
I am not sure if it’s possible to make the food out of wheat.
I don’t recommend eating the century egg often because some manufacturers may add heavy metals to speed up the production process even at the expense of public health.
