    Typically, when we think about negotiation what comes to mind is quick thinking and cleverness in the conversation. While useful, they overshadow where a negotiation actually starts. Negotiation starts with preparation.
    We negotiate every day with ourselves (what will it take to fit in one more thing?), with strangers (you arrive at the queue at the grocery store at the same time as another person, who goes first?), and even with who we share meals with (it’s pizza night, how will we choose toppings?). Not to mention bigger things: it’s time to select a new car, asking for a raise at work, talking about timelines for project deliverables, even where to live or how to invest in the future… Everyday negotiations help us learn about ourselves - when or what we will give, what causes us to compromise or dig in because of what we find important.
    When it comes to business, our practice and self knowledge will help with quick thinking to reach the intended outcome of a negotiation. Preparation will get us much further:
    - Why is this negotiation important?
    - What are the people in the room going to want, what is their negotiation style?
    - What are possible points where the conversation will stall or not move forward?
    - What is the best alternative?
