Curry has to be set to shoot his 3 pointers. I can’t remember the last time, coming out of a time out Curry shot a 3 down by 2 points with less than 5 seconds left to win the game. Larry Bird and Reggie miller could be fighting for position without the ball catch it with 2 seconds left on the clock and sink the 3. That is the difference.

3 point line was introduced to the NBA 1979-80... Bird's rookie season. His teammate Chris Ford made the first one in NBA history (10/12/1979). Bird was on the floor when it happened
Bird played his whole career with the 3, it just wasn't utilized b like it is today. Bird averaged 3.1 attempts per gm in the season he attempted the most. Andrew Toney was a lethal shooter, but he rarely took a 3. In his 38pt game vs Boston, I don't think he took a 3, and most of his makes were jump shots. Hand checking being allowed back then, and not today, is the biggest change from the 2 eras.
Ray and Curry played high school and college ball with the 3-point shot in place. The 3-point shot didn't exist until Bird's first year in the NBA so threes were just another shot for him until then.

Whatever your opinion of Curry or Bird…Bird won the first three 3 point contests …and never entered another one…Curry has been in 5 and didn’t win…forget three points…Bird was the founder of the 50-40-90 club…two years in a row…50% from the floor…40% from 3 point range and 90% from the free throw line…plus he joined Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain as the only 3 to ever win MVP back to back to back…3 in a row…and as a coaching 1998..voted Coach of the Year…and as the front office guy…in 2012…voted NBA Executive of the Year…he may not be your best 3 point shooter but he was high in every category and one of the best passers of all time…25 points a game..10 rebounds..6 assists…a couple of steals…and 90% from the line…and the 3 point line did not exist until the year after he signed his first contract…it did not exist…and he sat out a year after double Achilles surgery…in the Pacers playoff game…going for a loose ball..his head smacked and bounced off the floor…after the trainer looked him over, he came back out to play with a fractured right cheek…a concussion and double vision and scored 17 more points…
reggie miller and larry bird can shoot the 3 ball as good as any player that's ever played the game but in there era the 3 ball was a last option back then...back then the 1st option was get the ball down low in the low post 1st for the high percentage shot and if players back then would jack up 3balls like today they would be on the bench. facts
Great job fem. J.J. Reddick is a total embarrassment. Larry is the most clutch player in NBA history! do I believe Bird & Curry are the best 3 pt. shooters of all time? YES. Do I think Larry cares? Not one bit.
It isn't the refs fault that the fouls are being called, because they are just following today's rules. There were times, according to players in the 80's, when the refs just let them play. Also when the 3 point shot entered the league (the same time as Bird), the coaches did not encourage it, especially Bill Finch who was Birds coach the first 4 years. And only 2 players have won the 3 point contest 3 consecutive years. Larry Bird and Craig Hodges. Bird did not try more than the three times because he was having back problems and saved it for the games he was going to play.
Size matters:Bird was 6'9 to Curry's 6'3(Maybe)....Much harder to block a 6'9 shooter than a 6'3 shooter! Today's game=LOL NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY DEFENSE!!! In the 80s & 90s Curry couldn't take the punishment; He'd be out of the league in 5 or 6 yrs with injuries.
I agree. JJ Reddick was decent. Curry is FAR better than him. Heck, I don't even like LaBron but I know LaBron is an amazing shooter compared to Reddick and even compared to Curry. And yeah, Cooper would have locked him up and probably sent him crying on the bench. Larry Bird thinks Cooper was the best defender he had to go against.
the statement that larry only shot about 37 1/2 % from 3 point line in his career is correct. actually his first 5 years he was under i think 30% or very low 30's? But when he got into the 3 point contest he really started practicing more so his last 7 years he average 41% and that was with 1 year at 33%, you can't prove it but i feel if he practiced more he might have increased it maybe another 1% and then maybe not we will never know. Oh in playoffs an champioship games it was (42.2%)
The statement of the slightest bump of a player shooting a 3 has nothing to do with the refs. It has everything to do with the rules of today. Michael Cooper is trying to say the rules are different from today to back in the 80s. The rules allowed for a more physical game back in the 80s and have changed for player safety. Curry happens to play in a different era. Bird played in an era where Papa Curry hit Bird so hard that it almost knocked him out of the game.
its way more than the refs, it's the nba and money, the nba realizes that points equal money, the game has evolved and the nba has followed with it, that doesn't make it right or wrong, it is what it is
The current NBA is Powder Puff, the guys fall around and scream like toddlers do different than the soccer players to, I can't even watch the game anymore but then again I grew up watching the Celtics and Lakers battle it out
It's not moving the goal post. The real argument is what does "the best 3 point shooter" mean? The person that makes the most 3 pointers? The person with the highest percentage of successful 3 pointers? The person who makes the most clutch 3 pointers? The person who won the most 3 point contests? You had some good insight but I think you were quick to shoot down the arguments. Good reaction though made me think.
HE NEEDS TO WATCH THE VIDEOS AND STORY HOW TOUGH THE 80'S ALSO MARK PRICE FROM CLEVELAND CAVALIER IS MORE ACCURATE SHOOTER THAN HIM AND STILL CAN BEAT HIM ANYTIME.
Yeah Jordan wasn't known as a 3-point shooter but he busted in your eye when every time he needed one so I would just shut up why he is the goat and Larry is a top-five we're LeBron's not even top 20 facts
Bird in his first season didn't even have a 3 point line. Even after it was initiated, it wasn't practiced that much until the 90s.....and definitely not for big men of the 80s...unless you're Larry. Comparing those of today that practice it as guards for 90% of their shooting vs then? It's silly.
Larry's more Clutch. I mean, Jerry West and MJ are the only ones who could touch that. Maybe DJ. Curry is a better three point shooter. But he doesn't really do anything else. Is he a great player? yes, but Curry isn't in Larry's league. I mean Micheal Cooper was a decent 3 point shooter. But he was a BETTER defender. Larry had an all around game. Curry doesn't This is why many people defend Larry so hard. He wasn't at the top ten of everything, but he was excellent top 50 or higher at EVERYTHING. Nobody today does that. NO ONE. Heck, in the eighties, no one was doing that. He's not the GOAT, he's a UNICORN in a class by himself and always talked about WITH whomever you have as the GOAT.
I'm just a casual fan so my opinion may not matter. Bird really did seem to be a great team player. He tried to get everyone involved. But in clutch situations he wanted the ball because he wanted the team to win. He probably is a unicorn with amazing basketball IQ and endless confidence. When someone asked why he played hurt and gave 100%, he supposedly said something like, "I owe it to the Celtics. I owe it to basketball. I owe it to fans who may have saved for months to pay for tickets and transportation to the games."
Hes not blaming curry hes blaming the rules.. if bird played in todays game he'd dominate even more.

Yeah, the game has totally changed. They don't work for the win anymore. They would rather hit boring 3's rather than doing the hard work to make plays inside. It's not much of a true game. It's more of a show, and fans are getting tired. I am more impressed by watching earlier basketball than today's basketball. It's actually exciting to watch those older games.
Bird played in a man's league. Curry plays in a women's league. The end.
Don't forget Reggie Miller.. Boom Baby !
Every god level player is different. Each has their “abilities”. Bird didn’t shoot a ton of 3’s. He had to feed McHale and Parish in the post.
Pat Riley once said: last shot to win a game Jordan last shot to live or die Bird!
The most attempts bird averaged taking from 3 per game was 3.1. It was just a different game.
i'll say Curry is the better VOLUME 3 point shooter. he'll shoot MORE threes for you, but if the game is on the line and I need a 3, im going Larry Bird every single time
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡so instead of look at facts you go for media narrative
@@Newportnews98 actually STATS will tell you that Bird is a BETTER clutch performer.. we can EVEN FIND VIDEO that Steph DOESNT come through in the clutch.. while we CAN find video of BIRD coming in the clutch.. it doesnt matter what YOU THINK REMEMBER THAT.. REALITY is NOT what YOU MAKE IT...
NOBODY calls Curry clutch.. he LOST 5 3 POINT CONTESTS.. im the clown? seems like YOU are fitting that role really RE3ALLY well.. lol
@@Newportnews98 lol.. just lol..
@@Newportnews98 ive been watching basketball since the knicks had BOTH Mark Jackson AND Rod Strickland at the point. I watched the BEFORE they had Charles Oakley.. I SAW Magic, Kareem AND I SAW BIRD PLAY.. media narrative? lol just lol..
Bird was the man would avg 30 10 10 today
Bird everyday. All day. Over anyone. Best all around player ever. If I'm making a team. My 1st pick is Larry fade away bucket Bird baby.
Michael Jordan (Wizards) Highlights (43pts-10rebs) "at Age 40" vs.Nets [02-21-03]
I don't get this need to rank all time greats. Curry is great, Bird is great. It's impossible to rank players from different eras and make lists and why should you. It's a team sport. If I remember correctly when MJ was asked if he's the best of all time he responded they had the best team ever.
If Curry played in the 80s & 90s he'd be MARK PRICE! Mark Price would avg more points and more assists than Curry;Price had more talent!
Bro, do you actually think NBA refs have the power to call the game according to their own basketball beliefs???
Not blaming curry the game was much more physical in the 80's
reggie miller and larry bird can shoot the 3 ball as good as any player that's ever played the game but in there era the 3 ball was a last option back then...back then the 1st option was get the ball down low in the low post 1st for the high percentage shot and if players back then would jack up 3balls like today they would be on the bench. facts
Great job fem. J.J. Reddick is a total embarrassment. Larry is the most clutch player in NBA history! do I believe Bird & Curry are the best 3 pt. shooters of all time? YES. Do I think Larry cares? Not one bit.
Larry!!!!!
JJ REDDICK ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO LARRY LEGEND BIRD IQ AND SHOOTING AND HIS HATES BIRD .PERIOD
Currys the greater 3 point shooter. Birds the better mid range shooter. Currys better free throw. Birds much better clutch. Theyre both great.
Larry Bird is better than Stephen Curry ..
Flopping is on the players...not the refs. It's cowardice. Not a single 80s player to even think about doing that.
Today's society is SOFT,& that is reflected in our sports;Basketball is SOFT!!!
You missedthe point, bro.
the statement that larry only shot about 37 1/2 % from 3 point line in his career is correct. actually his first 5 years he was under i think 30% or very low 30's? But when he got into the 3 point contest he really started practicing more so his last 7 years he average 41% and that was with 1 year at 33%, you can't prove it but i feel if he practiced more he might have increased it maybe another 1% and then maybe not we will never know. Oh in playoffs an champioship games it was (42.2%)
NBA'S highest winning percentage belongs to Magic. 2nd. belongs to Bird.
Michael Cooper.... would destroy JJ Reddick...they don't play defense today
... Ray Charles could hit a three in today's league
When the reffs don't call it the players throw a fit like a 4 year old
Blame the refs? Think that one all the way thru. When did refs start making the rules?
Gonna stick with The Fucking Legend
its not the refs fault dude...its the n.b.a fault they made the rule change and ruined the game.
Curry would miss with game on the line
The statement of the slightest bump of a player shooting a 3 has nothing to do with the refs. It has everything to do with the rules of today. Michael Cooper is trying to say the rules are different from today to back in the 80s. The rules allowed for a more physical game back in the 80s and have changed for player safety. Curry happens to play in a different era. Bird played in an era where Papa Curry hit Bird so hard that it almost knocked him out of the game.
its way more than the refs, it's the nba and money, the nba realizes that points equal money, the game has evolved and the nba has followed with it, that doesn't make it right or wrong, it is what it is
The current NBA is Powder Puff, the guys fall around and scream like toddlers do different than the soccer players to, I can't even watch the game anymore but then again I grew up watching the Celtics and Lakers battle it out
Bird didn't need to do DELIBERATE 3 pointers. Curry was not a good clutch 3 point shooter. 0-12 last season.
Basketball has become a game of prima donnas. I stopped watching it more than 10 years ago.
Some really should try showing a little respect!
5 seconds on the clock Larry Bird
No blame it on the soft rules compared to the physical play of the 80s
Way to insult an entire generation
By no means that Curry is not great. It just that Bird is better than Curry.
