I was lucky enough to see games at the Forum but as far as watching on TV, most games were on tape delay and you had to wait until they were over to watch. So it was the radio where I experienced most of the games in real time. I would have a radio in my backyard and play along with the game on my own hoop based on what I was hearing from the great Chick Hearn. That was before internet so if you didn’t listen on the radio, usually you didn’t know who won the game until you watched the tape delay so it wasn’t that big of a deal. Different times for sure

Hi BU... I live in Boston and am a HUGE fan of Tom Brady. However, I completely agree with you. The rivalry between Peyton and Tommy is no where near the intensity or depth of the rivalry between Magic and Larry. Many people didn't understand Larry being drafted in his junior year. He became eligible for the draft because he enrolled in Indiana first and then left to Indiana St. in 74, and that class had graduated. Making him eligible. Indian Pacers attempted to draft him with their number one pick and found he wasn't going to leave college. So they traded the number one pick to Portland Trailblazers who also attempted to draft him at number one. They passed after they too failed to convince him to leave college early. When the Celtics drafted him at Number six it was a gamble. Boston's rights would expire when the next draft began on June 25, and Bird would have been the likely top pick. After protracted negotiations, Bird inked a five-year, $3.25 million contract with the team on June 8, making him the highest-paid rookie in sports history. Shortly afterwards, NBA draft eligibility rules were changed to prevent teams from drafting players before they were ready to sign, a rule known as the Bird Collegiate Rule.

I'd like to be younger, but I'm very glad to have grown up in Boston, in the 80's and be a part of Larry Bird's rise to legendary status. We even have the same last name, no relation sadly, but it was (and nostalgically) still is a very special time.
Side Note: I was at the gym when he retired, and Magic came out (which btw... no one ever shows) but Magic had on a Larry Bird Celtics jersey under his Lakers uni. Magic said something to the effect of "I've got one more surprise for you. (takes his jacket off) it'll never happen again, but this is for you" and showed that he was wearing Larry Birds Celtics jersey. Rousing applause from the fans, laughter from Larry, but in that moment, when it hit that it was over... as Larry said "Good-bye" Women, Men (of all ages and sizes, kids, trainers... ) No one was exercising, we just watched... eyes glued to the tv's, all proud and heartbroken; there wasn't a dry eye in the building.

One thing about these Bird videos is that it isn't Joe Blow or Fred Journeyman talking about how good he was. These are greats and hall of famers themselves. These are professionals who played with or against him.
Magic, Kareem, Michael Cooper, Byron Scott, James Worthy, Dominique, Isaiah Thomas, Salley, Irvin, Barkley, Ewing - the list has no end. If these guys said you deserved to be on the court with them, you are already great. When they admit fearing you? Damn.

I do enjoy 3 point shooting it todays game, but back in the day was used more as a strategic weapon but I have no doubt if Larry was playing today he would be up with the best in terms of 3 point shooting numbers. The guy would be on the practice court all day & night lol I do miss the mix of more driving to the post, slam dunking over players, sky hooks etc Think the talent is around in todays game to mix it up more. The passing, that's another time you never knew where the ball was going. He had it all mapped out mentally. He knew. We didn't but he knew and he surprised us over and over.

Bird and Magic is one of the most beautiful, one of the most important and, without a doubt, THE best rivalery story in sports.
    Period.
Nothing else is even in the same League.
Its Bird and Magic at the top, all alone as on a throne.
Then Id say there is like two or three empty tiers under them before the runner up can be found.
Thats how far their story out ranks anyone elses.
Without them the NBA would not exist and with its dissappearance, literally every NBA superstar thst followed.
You cant understate the absolutely world altering effect it would have if Larry and Magic never met.
What would happen if Brady & co vanished?
I harbor no malicious intent or feeling go either of them but mets be honest

16:34 the Magic/Bird rivalry changed the NBA forever and an argument can be made that they saved the NBA. There’s numerous videos to back that up.
No other individual rivalry has had as dramatic an effect on a sport. They just make the sport more enjoyable and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Morning, I have heard Luca Doncic called the reincarnation of Larry Bird. After watching him, I would agree. A comparison between Larry and Luca might make an interesting video. Doncic is described as slow, like Larry. I heard one comment about that saying " Doncic" plays at his own speed and you cannot stop him. Sounds like a perfect description of Larry Bird being slow. You are right about the rivalry between Bird and Magic being the best in professional sports. That kind of rivalry is only possible in basketball where a rivalry between teams can be in any sport but the ability to do head to head with a specific competitor and keep stats between them for years is only possible in basketball. One thing I have noticed that would make a good stat. What percentage of shots does a player make that are 'net only'. That 1st 3 pt shoortout, Bird rattles the 1st one then it is net, net, net...

Tim "The Big Fundamental" Duncan was a 5× NBA champ, 2× NBA MVP, 3× NBA Finals MVP, 15× NBA All-Star, and the only NBA player to ever be selected to the All-NBA and All-Defensive teams for 13 consecutive seasons. I remember seeing Duncan play when he was at Wake Forest and played against Vince Carter and my Tar Heels, they had some classic games back in the '90's.

Hmm,watching Larry play live with the Celtics just made it seem like, this guy isn't athletic and he didn't have a lot of athletic but why was he just unstoppable. And I saw it first hand for myself how that man did the things he did. Even watching a live game you were like what? Hold on, no they'll replay it. Or we will because to play back after the game and see what the hell did he just do. You saw it but you just had to shake your head in disbelief. You were like what? How did he continually do what he did and then we started to figure this guy Larry Joe Bird out. But you never stopped shaking your head I'm disbelief.

These clips are before Luka and Jokic which is why they keep comparing him to Dirk, but even now, I think most people would still put Larry at the top. What they don't know is Bird is 20th in ppg, 54th in rpg, 47th in apg, 38th in spg, and 217th in bpg, 61st in defensive rating, 30th in defensive win shares, 7th in Box+/-, and 2nd in winning percentage, ALL-TIME. That adds up to 476. The next closest guy (you want a LOW number) is 608 that I can find--and Jordan gets an 802. To measure a player's ALL-AROUND game, these are the stats that just make sense--all the measurables, no HYPE factor. See where your guy ranks. A true fan should have an idea of who got the 608--hint--it's an 80s player, and not Magic Johnson. Kareem got a 697.

Karl Anthony Towns??? He’s a nice player but Larry would torch him. Size?? Larry was a legit 6’9 with an amazing fade away jump shot that couldn’t be blocked. Not to mention that Larry’s basketball IQ was off the charts! The first 40/50/90 guy (did it twice), Larry would be a matchup nightmare in todays game with no hand checking and getting fouled if you sneeze on a guy. Larry would average about 35/12/9 in todays game and his best 3 seasons can be stacked up against anyone in the history of the league. Larry’s defense is also underrated as he was 3x 2nd team all defense and top 50 all time in defensive win share (for the young analytics junkies). Nothing Larry Joe Bird couldn’t do on the court. P.S. I had previously said my top 5 all time (of players I have seen play) were Jordan-Bird-Magic-Lebron-Kareem with Steph as a close 6th. My apologies to Kobe as he is my 6th ahead of Steph. Kobe is the only player I have seen since Jordan and Bird to have the same killer instinct. Kobe was another assassin!!!

The GOAT debate is so stupid. It’s based on position. You can’t compare a guard to a forward because their stats reflect differently. If you want to do a GOAT debate you have to do it position by position. The accolade that transcends position is legend … and there is exactly 1 of those … LARY JOE BIRD!!! He’s the only player that has ever been placed in that position … by his peers. They people he beat year after year. The teammates he played with year after year. The honest players that came after Bird. They all place Bird and only Bird as the legend of basketball!!!
