***** dident you know kingkook knows it all and is better then us all, its clear he has never seen phish live dead is a grate band but they are like phish in slow motion when it comes to Creative, Imaginative phish is the best of all time, no one is more creative then phish their halloween, NYE and their music fest proves that
andy bishop I'd say even just Junta proved it, but that's just me. Haven't read back KingKook's thread since I'd last commented, but from what I remember, he's just bitter. Too bad for him, 'cause Miami was the t!ts. &yeah, the Dead *were* grate, &even w/the likely 50th yr reunion, they may capture a minute amount of that greatness, again. But their prime was a long time ago. They became progressively worse over the yrs. Jerry's long gone. Bobby can barely stand up anymore, and it's not exactly like Phil likes him all that much. They're doing it for the $$$. Solely the $$$. Phish has been around as long as the Dead were when Jerry died and the break-up. Difference is, Phish still hasn't even entered their prime, IMO. Same four guys who groove together (and apart) that the Dead could've only imagined.
***** You're missing the point. Of course the Dead got worse in the later years when Jerry was often sick. And they got tired from being on the road almost continuously for 30+ years. No other band comes anywhere close to that achievement, not even the Stones. Phish had to take a long break after 20 years. The Dead played music that was drawn from the history of American music. Jerrry was a real scholar of blues, folk, country, jazz and primitive music, and he infused his own music with his love of all forms of music. Phish mostly copied the Dead's style without really understanding or appreciating its history. They imitated the Dead's attitude without knowing much about it's true source. The Dead weren't just a glorified jam band, they were genuine students of American music. They were innovators of a totally new and unique form of modern tribal music which not everyone understood or enjoyed, but those people who did get it embraced it with their whole being. That sort of passionate fanaticism is emulated by Phish fans but they don't actually feel that strongly about the band and their music. It's more so the IDEA of what Phish represents that draws their followers. Many Phish phans need to believe that they're an original, unique band, but Dead Heads know that they were part of something truly rare and special. That's what you're not grasping. Phish are OK, they are decent musicians and their concerts are fun, but you have no idea what you're talking about if you think a Phish concert is ANYTHING like a Dead show. Superficially Phish concerts might appear to be similar, but there's such a deep and fundamental difference that it's crazy and stupid to argue otherwise. I'm not bitter, but I am disgusted with you and your lazy, sloppy thinking.
Thumbs up to Jimmy for the 10 minute music spot on Tonight Show. Not since Carson, have I seen anything like that! EDIT: I was informed by "Mr. America" that this is the web exclusive. They did 'Waiting All Night' on the NBC broadcast -- normal 4 min-ish spot. Oh well, it was a nice thought while it lasted.
No doubt! That is very cool. Phish is on fire this year. Saw them at MSG during the 4 night run and again in Chicago in July - they are as sharp as ever and this is a great record, especially for Phish a band known as a great live band not an "album band". Love it!
Yes a nine plus song on corporate America unheard of.. especially like Trey's never needed you like this before. Jah rastafari Inna dis ya time innana Addis Ababa Selassie I
People that go to their first Phish show, the lot scene and the people are what makes it. You won’t know the name of a single one of their songs, but the fans are so genuine.
Great Fuego!!! I am happy that Jimmy gets it. If you don't have any nice comments to say about Phish keep them to yourself. Not everyone appreciates good music.
nah I think I'll speak freely and say that their songwriting has gone down the tubes. they should stick to playing Reba and YEM while EMTs wait patiently outside the venue for the next imminent overdose.
People that compare the Dead to phish are kind of moranic. Just because the fan base is similar does not mean that their creative output is anywhere similar. That's like saying "every jazz saxophonist should be compared to one another". Same venues, same instrument, same scene of people...but, naturally, two good players should have two totally different things which make them great. No point in comparing a band that is far more influenced by zappa, genesis and other art rock bands to the dead.
Sean Wilson agreed. thinking about lyrics and song structure, I'd put Widespread Panic as the "torch bearer," to the Dead, not that one is needed. These guys are all way to good to be known as "the next..."
Sean Wilson Absolutely... Both the Dead and Phish have many similarities, but they have just as many differences. Glad that some people understand that they are two very different bands who take music to very different places.
There's music you feel and there's music you think, then there's music you think you feel. I really don't know what to think or feel - can I have some more Phish?
wasn't jimmy the dude that did the skit with them on snl when they guested? tryna remember it was some shit about him having a deadhead website or something and then the cops show up
What ? Phish is wonderful, do you have a hearing problem ? The fans are loyal and they are Phamily ....They more than likely have more fun at a Phish show than you have ever had, you must have a horrible life to diss this wonderful , Kind Band that gives it all to their fans and they in turn spread the love....
citing phish shows as some kind of highlight is dumb, they're notoriously sketchy and on any given night there's a dozen or so overdoses. get real dude.
@@leshtricityclown comment. "A dozen or so overdoses" on any given night, cite your info please? I've been to over 100 shows never seen this once. Phish was not on their A game sound wise here. But with that said there's A. Too much reverb for Trey B. Fish's drums aren't micd as well as normal. C. The tonight show is not the place to experience Phish
Trey wasn't really on point and his tone was weak for some reason, but pretty good Fuego anyway. But yeah, I saw an incredible version of it on 7/30/14 that went on for over 18 minutes. I think they played Fuego at every venue during that summer, but only 3 versions truly stood out. 7/4 and 7/8 and the one I saw.
alice mcneil I disagree with that any show from 2010 and on they sound very clean and more psychedelic than they have ever been and drugs got Trey to a point where he was physically ill from drugs and alcohol. I rather have him happy and alive man

Jimmy Fallon is hollow and meaningless enough, without a shell of a milquetoast musical guest to highlight the banality.
