    Thanks for doing this video. I really need to do some maintenance on my SR Suntour XCM 30 27.5's but I've been putting it off because I wasn't sure what to do. Thanks to you I do now :)

    my sr suntour xcm fork is only 3 months old and orange coloured liquid started oozing out of the stanchions whenever it compressed, the next day, it had siezed up completely and didn't compress. I think this video will be very helpful. :^) thanks!

      Thank you, if it was brand new then you bought it, it's weird, but that's probably rusty water, which needs to be removed as soon as possible from the lower.

      Try with an L shape tool, like the allen key. There are gook and pick sets, which are meant for this type of work, but anything small and L shape should work. Or you can hit the other part of the lower with a rubber head hammer.

    • @EatBuildRideRepair
      @EatBuildRideRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Without that you can't really remove it, try to ask for a tool from a bike shop, or order from amazon or Aliexpress, this way it takes a few weeks till you receive it, but than you will have the tool forever :)

    Thanks, very helpful and helped me with my XCM fork. Question and a comment. Did you ever try to get the rust of off the stanchion leg, apart from using propyl alcohol? I've similar amount of rust on my stanchion legs and would like to remove it.
    Comment: I prefer to do the cleaning in a well ventilated site, otherwise the solvent fumes can be bad for your health.
    Advice: after cleaning the preload knob with propyl alcohol, mine almost seized up. I found lubing it with grease promptly after cleaning prevented it seizing. Thanks again.

      Hi, I am happy to hear that you found it useful. I tried to get rid of the rust with vinegar as well, also tried a sandpaper with 800 hardness, but cant really remove it if it's in the steel, you can try to make it smaller, but it will grow bigger if you can not get rid of it completely with a sandpaper, but if you do so, the dirt would penetrate easier.
      Best thing you can do, to prevent it, by doing the maintenance regularly.

    • @haba_15
      @haba_15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EatBuildRideRepair thanks, I used red wine vinegar at 6% solution, by soaking kitchen towel wrapped around the stanchion tubes and leaving overnight. It got rid of the rust ok. There's some slight discolouration in the tubes where the rust and wear had occurred. Its a secondhand bike, so still discovering what needs replacing. Yes, regular servicing should stop the rust before it starts:-)

      would white spirit work?

    • @haba_15
      @haba_15 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@driedmango123 try a small amount on paper towel and see what happens. My guess is no, it is the acid content of the vinegar which causes the etching action on the rust. I think white spirit is a solvent, not an acid, but open to correction

    Did it stop the squeak?

    • @EatBuildRideRepair
      @EatBuildRideRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, definitely. The rusty springs made the squeaking sound, if it clean and lubricated, it would be silent.

    • @EatBuildRideRepair
      @EatBuildRideRepair  ปีที่แล้ว

      try this service, it should move even if it's in bad condition. If it's completely rigid, there should be some major issue with the spring.

    How to adjust the bounce of this kind of fork my friend?

    • @EatBuildRideRepair
      @EatBuildRideRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the top of the legs you need to have a preload and or a rebound adjust knob. If you turn it CCW so the negative way it should be less bouncy, turn it inverse CW to make it more jerky. Do not recommend the second one, should be less bouncy to be usable on offroad.

    What a joke!!! Forks that rust in the rain??? I am not liking fork suspensions on bicycles. I just got my 1st bike with them, and I wish I had got a bike without fork suspension. I dislike the spongyness of forks on bicycles, and prefer a hard direct feeling and contact with the road, and it seems the materials are just crappy on bicycles. They are more trouble than they are worth. Regular forks = no maintenance and faster speed! 👍

    • @EatBuildRideRepair
      @EatBuildRideRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right, a fix fork is a better option than a way more heavy and still not that soft working fork. However this one is a relative decent suspension, but it was left outside for a long time, so the coating of the stanchions dissappeared, and nowt it rusts even now, when is not even used just hanging on the wall. The water from the air damages anyways. Maybe I make another video about this.

      same with brake disks i have owned motorbikes yes and push bikes don't need them they just add more weight and extra maintenance. more money for bike shops and manufacturers that make parts and we have to fix all the stuff that dosent need it and also buying more stupid tools.
