    Just pulled an old Scott YZ15 out of the garage and need to do the brakes. Fork has oil on the outside so wasn’t sure if the seals had gone. This was the first vid when I typed xcm fork strip into the search. Nice to see they are about as advanced as my 1966 Triumph Tiger Cub forks.😅 At least I now know it’s not oil leaking out of the forks.
    I’ll have a mooch and see if you’ve done a brake service on Shimano BLM hydraulic system.
    I’ve liked this vid and subscribed, as you seem to have struck a happy balance between explanation and showing the process. Not so complicated you’d frighten a newcomer, and not so simple that someone with some mechanical knowledge is left wanting. Nice job!

    I have watched your video & was surprised that the shock did not contain any oil? I have a shock, Suntour XCM. Now the bad part, the shock is leaking oil, as a liquid? I'm in Mexico, the bike's been here for 8-10 yrs only used during the winter, so if it's melted grease Great! Is it possible for this grease to melt? By the way the bike a KSI 500 was purchased new in Guadalajara. Thanks for thee Great & Easy to understand Video! Much appreciated

    Nice video and very helpful for your newbie home mechanic fans. Since suntour is the first choice for almost all the bike manufacturer's entry level segment, chances are xct, xcm, xcr forks are their one and only way to go. almost all of their super cheap to mid level hardtails got these models and sometimes rockshox xc 28, xc 30 coil varients can be seen. Again thanks for your tutorial. Watching this before disassembly, is really assuring for anyone. Want this type of tutorials even more.

  • @SuperJerot

    Now that's a useful video! Servicing an entry level fork at home. Most people pay for the service almost as much as getting a used fork, why not doing it yourself. It would be awesome if you could do the same with RockShox Dart 3 fork. I think Dart lineup is about the same for servicing but that's just a wild estimation.

    • @paul-stefandutoit8990
      @paul-stefandutoit8990 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is there even a reason to service forks like these? I mean I can see no benifit to doing so. There are no seals that can leak or real performance increase afterwards. Perhaps all reason I can think is if a part is badly worn out or damaged

    My fork has a blue lockout lever on the right side. All I could find on the internet is to pop that lever off. However mine wouldn't pop off. And it turned out I didn't have to pop it off at all and I didn't even have to touch the right top cap. I just unscrewed the left top cap and only the left leg had a spring in it. The rest was just like in the video. Thanks!

  • @fabioleal4665
    @fabioleal4665 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mine has 9 months in service now and started working incorrrectly, with its back travel getting slower like an airlplane landing gear shock. Again, bike forks should be capable of fast feedback, given the low mass of the cyclist + bike system. Dampers, especially viscous-type, like the hydraulic cartridges are intended to slow down the return travel on large mass systems to prevent them from bouncing for too long. That's taught on the basiscs of the mechanical engineering course, on vibration, and this is why car suspensions have a coil + fluid damper system. Back to my XCM 30, after these 9 months, it started to rub, making it sluggish on its back travel. When I opened it, I found the reason: The plastic caps at the end of the coil spings were too tight to the internal wall so as soon as they got some dirty and the ends of the coils got a bit rusty, they started to hold it back at the begining of the back travel, due the increased friction. After some finish sanding, it now works correctly, being promptly ready for the next obstacle as soon as it gets off the 1st. High frequency shock absorving function is back to mine now. I dare to say that under certain circumstances it works better than my Rockshox Judy from my 2nd bike, which is a fair comparison as it's also a coil spring fork. Althouh both are obviously not comparable to an air susp, Suntour has the advantages of being cheap and easy to maintain at home. The big problem I noticed is the rust on the chromed legs before 1 year in service, as these are parts that aren't worth to replace, epseciallly from the complexity and safety standpoints.

    hi RJ and anyone reading this,
    I tried removing the top caps using the correct tool, still they would not open. it got to the point where i used the lockout mechanism thread to secure the tool in place (so it would not have room to go up and allow the teeth of the tool to come out of the teeth of the cap, if you catch my drift). Then with a large pipe wrench i could apply more force on the tool... Finally the teeth in the cap gave out and I'm stuck with the cap still firmly screwed into the fork (one side , the other came off).
    Any tip on best way how to get it out still at this point? (so I can order a replacement one and continue refurbishing this fork) Or would you say it's game over at this point and time to order a new fork altogether and bin this one?
    Cheers !

    Best video about SR Suntour budget forks, after watching this I am pretty sure I can service my own fork rather than paying 50$ atleast... Which means more money for other parts 😂👌

    Nice video, i thought suspension forks needed to have oil to dampen the shocks

    Personally you should use break cleaner once you disassemble the forks but i won’t argue just a quick pro tip for those that are new.

    Hey, in my SR Suntour XCM, the 4mm and 5mm allen key stuff to fix the lockout doesn't get tight at all. What can I do to fix it?

    I purchased a new Aventon Level E Bike in Mar 2022, it has the cheap
    zoom fork, after about 2 weeks the front fork makes a clunk sound when
    going over some bumps and it's
    pissing me off, it does not do this when it's locked out though, does
    anyone know what the issue is? Or even an upgrade fork the would fit
    this bike? Thanks John
