Secret Drawer Locking Mechanism And Hookless Key Storage - How To

  • For this project, I am having fun with magnets. I am making an entryway table with a clean hookless key storage area and a hidden cash stash.
    Gravity-actuated plungers limit drawer movement until magnets are placed at strategic points to unlock the hidden drawer compartments.

    The author does like to th-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    Dude, that is awesome! Thank you for the video and idea. I have to say that your patience is astounding. You take your time and it reminds me that I need to slow down when I'm doing a project.

    Nice job. One suggestion, you should cut the rear part of the drawer at a 45-degree angle. That way you don't need the magnets to push the drawer in. Only to pull the drawer out. Like how the striker works on a door.

    I just finished my project, and went to sit down with a cup of coffee when I saw the new video! Hell yeah! It's Junkie Time! thank for the video, it just makes my day! Oh, but be careful with those magnets and your keyfobs. They can zap them and kill the batteries really quickly, so keep extra batteries in that drawer just in case😉

    Nice project and useful. To prevent rattling of anything in the hidden compartment, add felt - and, put something loose (like a marble) in the main compartment to 'cover' any possible rolling sound - it will also distract on opening the drawer (let's not make it too easy for them, after this project).

    Yesterday I was designing a kitchen drawer with a secret compartment at the rear. As the drawers will be 22" deep the idea was to use a shorter drawer slide. Another idea was a false bottom in the deepest bottom drawer. Neither idea of mine will be as simply elegant as your idea. The embedded magnets is an excellent idea. Thanks Jean.

    I was wondering about the routing you do. I know you have a routing table in your bench, but you didn't use it for the cuts where I think having more stability helps. Why is this?

    Magnetized keys will pick up any grains of metal they come into contact with. Those grains will then be transferred to the lock, causing wear or even jamming the mechanism.

    • @WoodshopJunkies
      @WoodshopJunkies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Around here it is most commonly called Kiaat. It is a Southern African wood specie. The tree is protected in South Africa (like most others) so most of our Kiaat comes from neighboring countries.

    • @cliffwall6593
      @cliffwall6593 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodshopJunkies Thanks for that, my uncle grew up in the Knysna district and became a carpenter had a dining table made of wood that looks just like the wood you used. It was an expanding table and you could not see the joint and difference in pattern when open or closed.

      It is Kiaat. Kiaat is very similar to blackwood but Kiaat is indigenous to Africa while blackwood is an invasive species. Ironically, Kiaat is also slightly darker (in my experience) than blackwood.
