- The mostly forgotten and disliked Avante in the 1/10th RC family or a missed gem?. What do you think about this Tamiya Avante, should it ever have been made? Well, let's take a look and see what you get for your money before we condemn it completely. It does have full metal diffs, half bearings and oil shocks so I guess that's a good start.

I always wanted an Avante. But could never afford one as a young kid. I have and am still very proud of my Boomerang. None the less, when the opportunity arose I purchased an Avante "BLACK" and previously passed all other junk with the Avante name for the same reason. They were quick sale Tamiya Knockoffs that were NOT special at all. Just like my Blackfoot and Kyosho Javelin and Monster Beatle as well. All re-released as close to the originals. I still am waiting for an Astute and King Cab, as well as original Midnight Pumpkin 🎃 not the silver crap. The current world of RC bing Traxxas ,Axium, Lossi.....
They Do Not do it for me.
The only Traxxas I want is the re- release of the TRX-1
I would recommend putting 50w oil into the shocks with the single hole piston. I have a gravel hound and the stock specs were way too soft.

The Aero Avante Mini 4WD was the 1st of the new REV Series Mini 4WD back in 2012. It debut with the AR Chassis (Aero), and the first few Mini 4WDs of that series featured the imo, god awful side fenders design on their bodies.
Anyways, 2012 and thereafter was more or less the beginning of new a wave of popularity for the Mini 4WDs in Japan and later around South East Asia and other countries like in the US. As a result of the boom in popularity, Tamiya Japan reinstituted their Mini 4WD Japan Cup series, which ended the hiatus from since the early 2000s, (2002 I believe).
There are many color variations of the Mini 4WD Aero Avante, including polycarbonate bodies, and it was also used as the body for the AR Chassis Starter Pack to attract new Mini 4WD racers to this very niche hobby where you are the mechanic and engineer, but not necessarily the driver.

As for the Avante Mk II, back in around 2006 this was one of the first kits for the Mini 4WD PRO series and the RC version followed after that in 2007.

I had an Avante mini back in like 1993 or something. I didn't know that there was a scene for it and actual race tracks. I just saw the mini boxes in the shop I bought my manta ray from and they were cheap so I got one. With a little modification you can do away with the 2 AA batteries and whack in a lovely 9v battery for super speed. I just treated it as a toy as I had no tracks to run it in. It's cool that it came in kit form, gave me something to do one afternoon. Now that technology would allow it, I might see if I can modify one to be RC. That would be a fun project. I'm doing a Holiday buggy dt02 to a neo falcon(with box art from original falcon)...got decals just after the neo shell.

Imho if the car doesn’t have the dedicated Avante chassis, it’s not a Avante. Tamiya is just cashing in on the name and reputation/nostalgia of the original....

Strangely I love it and want one.......pre-orderer and paid for a Tamiya Thunder Dragon Re release last month and was expecting it this week so I'm very disappointed......hoping to see it early this month especially as paid for! It’s just hard to call anything an avante other than the avante itself - the materials/engineering that went into that car was simply too high for them to put the name on something like this - why don’t they head up with it instead of down?!? It’s not like people wouldn’t buy a $1000 kit - I’vexalways dreamed of a 1/8th scale version 🤗
Totally agree avante isnt something that is just a name, however the df02 like most newer tamiya kits is better once you add hop ups and if you are running it Gavin the front shock towers very flimsy
If it's the same chassis as the gravel hound then it's very weak and they break far to easily by the spur gear moulding!... probably best left on the shelf. Like the body shape though!.

I lusted over the avante as a kid but my parents got me a grasshopper for Christmas 1987. I still carry that feeling of disappointment to this day.

The weird side wings on the body are based on F1 cars, they also need to be there as the chassis is exposed and looks even more ugly without them in place. It's a consequence of pinching in the main body to look like the original Avante.
I've never owned or ever even seen plastic drive cups in an RC car before. It makes no sense to me. I'm so confused rn.
I agree with you 100%. Thats not an Avante! It may be a perfectly good Tamiya 4wd buggy but I don't think it deserves the Avante name.

I'm not trying to be a hater of the Aero, because I am not. However, it's not a real NASA designed full fat Avante. I do like the car but you hit the mark with the chassis type. I think Tamiya was simply milking it's Avante range with the Aero and the MK 2. Great video! Thumbs!
Technically she's not part of the avante 88 family. The Aero Avante was born as a mini4wd, then released as a 1/10 scale rc buggy followed by a 1/14 rc buggy.
For you the real missing members of the avante family are the Avante 2001 QD and the Tomy/Tamiya Qsteer Avante

I got it on ebay.co.uk, some turn up now and again. Importing them from outside the UK has just become too expensive.
Hi Gav, I agree with Christoph Wirnsberger. In my opinion it´s n ot that ugly and i think the Chassis isn´t that bad by the look of things. Let´s wait and see how she runs.

Your description of the origin story is correct according to the Tamiya USA website. As far as why they did it this way and why they don't have a dedicated chassis, who knows? Don’t know why people hated on it, just because of a name. It’s not as if tamiya tried to profiteer of the name, as they were going for under $100 for the longest time, although that is no longer the case. I certainly thought they were pretty.

It just feels like such a missed opportunity and sorry to say, a bit lazy of Tamiya.
I'm subbed and I've smashed your bell or what ever but you still fail to show up in my feed.
