I feel you RCKicks. But we have to remember that younger RC enthusiasts who were not even born when these iconic Tamiyas were coming out, have no connection with those times, namely the late 80's and early 90's. Those times for us have become kinda nostalgic as we were like kids and teengers then, and if we owned a Tamiya RC at those times, the connection was destined to stay with us for the rest of our lives as it reminds us of our childhood and teenage years. Totally agree with you there, those who said that for the money they can buy a much faster modern RC basher have missed the point completely. It's like saying that for the price of a classic 1970 Porsche 911 S, I could get a much faster and modern Honda Civic Type R :-)
Personally I struggle to see the appeal of them and why people pay the money (I'm not bashing on Tamiya, I own many). There are class racing machines, new and vintage that are way cheaper than this. The Tamiya Avante is just expensive for no real reason. And as far I as I know, it was never any good either, not compared to the competition. If they were £250 they'd still be expensive. But £460 is just crazy IMO. I've paid less for 'real' cars. It's not as if it has been updated to modern standards either.

I am happy that the title of this video was wrong and I just got my 2024 reissue and I am absolutely thrilled. It’s so lovely and I have desperately wanted one.

The West Ealing Beatties is one I used to go into every week, after school. I went to Ealing College Upper School. All the Tamiya stuff was up on the 2nd floor. What memories.
Same as me :) I lived in Ealing. Up the stairs on the right and the Tamiya stuff was all along the two walls. I remember it well with the little TV showing the Tamiya adverts. :)
Ohh yes I know when I saw the Avante for the first time. And it was love at first sight. But my first Car was the Hot Shot. And then the Manta Ray(Top Force Prototype) came to me for racing. It is always nice to remember the good old days.
Great video. I don't know if its been mentioned in the comments but you left out that the OG Egress has the upright lower shock mounts that are impossible to get. I restored a egress I bought on the cheap because it was run over cutting it in half and crushing a lot of the back half. Because the front was intact and those shocks were mounted in that unique way my wallet was forced open and a full restore was in order. Thanks for the memories and great video.
I've been watching this channel a lot lately. I joined this great hobby 3 years ago. Crawlers is what initially attracted me to the hobby and it's been all crawlers ever since. I picked up a Traxxas 4tec for something different a few months ago and love it. I am intrigued by Tamiya simply because of their price. Building crawlers can get very expensive lol. My only thing is, as soon as I see Phillips head hardware, I get completely turned off and get a feeling of a "cheap" product. But, I want to give a Tamiya a try and see for myself. I just can't make up my mind what I should start with or even know what I should start with. I've been looking at the TT02 but I think I may get a buggy of some sort since I have never had any kind of buggy. Really enjoy learning about Tamiya through your channel! Picked up a new sub!

i had one for my birthday when they came out they were on offer at Golden Games in Derby only cost £99 as they could not sell them and i even raced it all all my club meetings and even at the Tamiya Cup at the NEC where they had an off road track inside
I first started my journey with RC with Tamiya back in 85. Hornet, then Fox, Frog and a Wild One. Tamiya is still very much in my heart. Sold all of that in the early 90's to go 1/8th buggy nitro. With my parents help of course. Always frothed over the Avante...Didn't care if it was a flop on the track. Now at nearly 50, I have over 30 RC cars from Traxxas, Arrma and the like and as much as the biblical performance difference (And lets face it... durability) I'm looking at getting the Avante 2011 or Black Special since it has a lot of the improvements and only need to source the cam loc wheels and paint it the right colour and decals to get the original look. The only thing stopping me.... Never meet your heros. Would love to get one for my collection..I would run it though...Gently, not like a 10 year old in 1985 lol. I have a work colleague building the Black Special ATM. Might wait to see what his drives like before buying my own. Thank you for the video...Very informative.
Go for it, the build will be a total nostalgic experience that you will enjoy. Just get extra thread lock lol 😂 It will run OK but just don’t jump it or expect much at the track from it.

Yep it was gone as fast as it came in by the looks of it. If you want one it's best to keep an eye out as some more will drip in over the next few weeks I guess.

Something special about that little gold can. You can blow it out of the water with something much cheaper but all Tamiya fans should have one in the collection.

Gavin, this video... And current prices for parts.. of the Avante Black Special... Made it make more sense to buy the entire kit... verses the needed parts to convert my 2011 Avante rerelease... Still expensive!... but a body and sticker kit with wheels and tires now cost more than the whole car to acquire. LOL
Super informative. Because i keep seeing yours i pulled the trigger and have a 2011 Avante coming. I also have a Avante MKII coming could not pass it up price was to good. It was started and not finished body uncut not painted with the original sticker sheet.

I finally was able to get a new in box avante 2011 release and it’s so pretty. Having trouble deciding if I want to ruin the pretty packaging, and build it or leave it in the box. Trying to finding ways to not ruin the bubble packaging. Yes mine are all shelf queens, so I they look just like the box art, but prefer to not ruin any of it.
Very good point which I’m itching to so will plan on it. Did you do anything to save the packaging or just opened it? Orders the top force finally and debating on the astute or black ed clodbuster, I have an original that’s a shelf queen but would love to put some new parts, some of the red and rims have faded.
Curious as to advice. If parts are missing what is the best way to remedy it? So far 13 phone calls to tamiya usa and hobby town usa says it must go through them. Anyone else have these problems ? FYI it’s not just a piece here or there it’s a lot. Sadly it’s on the Avante. Because it’s a special order I can not return it, (don’t want to anyway but do want it complete).

Gavin is there a difference between the Avante and the black version of the Avante? What are the differences can they be applied to the regular Avante?
I got one of those I found it very intense build got a few other tamiya changed the motor mine came with a Gt motor still thinking about trying a brushless motor in it

Vqs ordered and thunder dragon and egress and the top force evo builder the fire dragon and I wait on the terra scorcher do you have plans to build a semi truck like the grand hauler got that to build still I also built a blizziter bettle and I have a super hot shot ordered have you heard anything about it I wonder if it’s a up upgraded version of the hot shot and I have a plasma edge 2 ordered also wondering what you might know about those model’s most of those are rere you never know when they will stop making them
The Team Associated RC10 during the late 80’s. Then Few later the 1991 the RC10T was released best Rc in my option. Tamiya Avante though was innovation.
It seems expensive, especially compared to something like the turbo optima. I’m just not sure how the pricing is justified versus that. Be interesting to compare the two on the track. Also looking for a cheaper build for Xmas, the racing fighter is less than £100 itd be cool to see how it compares to the tomahawk and cat.
The Avante is really close to the Turbo optima from a quality or parts in the kit. That said I do think the Avante prices are only going one way and that’s not good for new to the hobby RC collectors.
The price mainly comes from it being heavily overengineered compared to the competition. It had a lot of exotic materials and tooling costs were high as well. Price was an issue with the Avante even back in the late 80s.
Will be putting them on the track for some times, the issue is the weather is now getting worse as we enter winter. Finding a dry window is hard for running and painting.
Brilliant vid Gav. I'd love one but I just can't justify the price. I think I'll end going down the kyosho turbo optima road. They look lush. But still exotic enough.

I had an original Avante and I can definitely confirm that it was seriously fragile. I broke so many parts on it, from rather minor collisions. Such a gorgeous car though.

You will soon forget the massive bill in a few months Michael but you will love building, running and owning your own iconic Avante for sure. It's a fantastic bit of vintage engineering and one of Tamiya's crowning achievements in my book.
I just learned there is a 84377 Aero Avante (Red Special.) Another one missing in your collection:-) But a very nice collection of Avante you have already.
The red and blue aero Avante kits are just the same. I don’t like the aero so I can’t bring myself to get two of them. I will probably just get a second body for the collection.
The shops are saying back in stock in Feb/March again so??? Probably not the last we will see of this re release yet. Other countries have covid too it’s a case of getting them built I guess to satisfy demand in the chaos of covid.
Personal choice really. The Turbo will drive better but it's close on quality. You can't go wrong with these two so go with the one you like more yourself.
Had the Frog back in the day and then this showed up so I saved up and bought one. It was so much better than the Frog. Any word on whether they will re-release the Porsche 959 like the one on the shelf behind you?
I must say that the Avante 2011 in silver and if you put the black Egress rims on it, it almost looks better than the Egress 😍❤️👍 otherwise I have a leal soft spot for the Egress, it feels like it is Tamiyas answer to the Turbo Optima 😊
One year ago I bought an Egress for $400 AUD. They are now being advertised on eBay for $1200 LOL. I wonder if people are actually paying these prices or if the prices will ever go down.
Well I check sold listings on ebay to get my rough figures. Sometimes you only get 2-3 sold over the last few months so averaging out the price just gives you a rough idea. Most RC prices have a massive connection to condition obviously, so you end up with a wide range. Another thing is by country, some cars fetch different prices in different countries at different times. What I can say is we have seen a massive increase in prices across the board for vintage cars over the last 12-18 months. As a collector you would think this is a good thing, unfortunately I don't see it that way as it pushes out new RC people coming into the hobby as well as limit the cars people can acquire. Can you imaging finding out the RC cars you loved but could never afford as a child have been reissued and you can now have them again, only to find out prices have gone so high you still 30 years later can't afford them! That's not good for the hobby. :(
@@RCKickschannel I have been lucky that I have been able to buy the kits I wanted (Hot-Shot, Fox and Egress) when they were still reasonably priced. But now that they are selling for such high prices I would rather just buy something more modern like an Axial kit.
I like the Avante but for that price you can get a top of the line 4wd race buggy from Team Associated, TLR or Yokomo. And all those cars would be way faster and have plenty of replacement parts available.
I don't think most people who buy an avante would get it for racing. It is not competing with those buggies. Maybe in 1988 it was designed to compete with the likes of Schumacher and yokomo but now it is pure nostalgia
They need to re-re the Egress again that's the only 1 for me. Avanti lovely car, but to many robbers out there some are selling on rip-off ebay for over £1000 that's just stupid!
Tbh I’m waiting for Chinese knock offs brands to make more Tamiya copy’s. they recently made this high lift copy which honestly is quite decent. I’d love to have some of those to actually drive, break and fix, maybe do them my way, slap 2s brushless in and modern shocks without getting mean looks from all the ‘’enthusiasts’’. Hate this collector market sitting on cars drooling over box art, driving prices to the sky. Modelling is cool but if this car is meant to run, run it. There are model car kits that aren’t rc where you can really show off painting and assembling skills. Take those and put them on display instead. As a kid I couldn’t afford any of those, had to get by with nikko toys with spiky wheels, watching them in hobby shops and now I’m an adult and still cant afford, or rather, justify one. Got some arrmas, traxases, axials, losis. They drive million times better at much lower price. Might just get a set of spiky wheels and clear shell to slap on rustler 2wd and forget about getting an tamiya.
They were gorgeous but too heavy and over engineered to be competitive on a national level back in the day. I drove a Yokomo YZ10 and slaughtered the Avante.
It would probably do better today in the vintage class, though. Or at least the more durable rere. Vintage 4WD typically runs 13.5T brushless, which is a lot more power than what you guys were running back then.
The price of these kits are too high, if you have £500 spare you could get the Traxxas Maxx that would totally kick the avante's ass all day long, yes vintage Tamiya's look fantastic but not at these high prices :(
Traxxas' are souless clones of one another with no character whatsoever. Yeah they are fast and tough but I would no way in hell take one over an avante. It's not just about speed. Also traxxas ain't that good on the track either. How many people race them? 🤔🤔
Traxxas Maxx, well that couldn’t be further away from an Avante if it tried. Completely different animals and impossible to compare the two. If it’s just about speed and toughness you would never purchase a single vintage RC. The new bashers are built like tanks and can take a kicking like nothing I’ve seen before. The Avante family isn’t about that at all.
I had the Black Special Avante and I don't want to own another one again. The worst rc body design ever. It's a pain the neck to open it 🙃 BTW, I love Tamiya and I own few of them but never Avante again!
Yep, it’s getting that way. I was super lucky and picked up most of my Avante collection used and a few years ago when prices sat around £150-£200 max. Now we are in the £300-£500 that’s just bonkers!
This only appeals to one who doesn't mind the lack of bang for the buck in contrast with superior performing buggies that look good for a better price, a la Typhon 3S from ARRMA.

Nice one. I’m not a fan of the MK2 but it’s not that easy to find, especially at a good price so good work grabbing one for the collection.

Hi, I have a built 2011 so I sold on the NIB as I needed the money for other projects. Go for it, the kit is lovely and a true Tamiya icon.
I finally was able to get a new in box avante 2011 release and it’s so pretty. Having trouble deciding if I want to ruin the pretty packaging, and build it or leave it in the box. Trying to finding ways to not ruin the bubble packaging. Yes mine are all shelf queens, so I they look just like the box art, but prefer to not ruin any of it.
Whatever makes you happy Jason. Me I like to build then vs NIB as I enjoy looking at them built.
Very good point which I’m itching to so will plan on it. Did you do anything to save the packaging or just opened it? Orders the top force finally and debating on the astute or black ed clodbuster, I have an original that’s a shelf queen but would love to put some new parts, some of the red and rims have faded.
Curious as to advice. If parts are missing what is the best way to remedy it? So far 13 phone calls to tamiya usa and hobby town usa says it must go through them. Anyone else have these problems ? FYI it’s not just a piece here or there it’s a lot. Sadly it’s on the Avante. Because it’s a special order I can not return it, (don’t want to anyway but do want it complete).
The original Egress did have a 0ne-way diff. Still have my original here which I used to race back when it was released....

All the Avante cars will run on the track, issue is weather now we enter winter. Finding a dry window is getting harder for running and painting.

Gavin is there a difference between the Avante and the black version of the Avante? What are the differences can they be applied to the regular Avante?
Yep the black is better. Racing steering and better diffs. I think you get a few extra upgrades but I can't remember of the top of my head.

I got one of those I found it very intense build got a few other tamiya changed the motor mine came with a Gt motor still thinking about trying a brushless motor in it

Vqs ordered and thunder dragon and egress and the top force evo builder the fire dragon and I wait on the terra scorcher do you have plans to build a semi truck like the grand hauler got that to build still I also built a blizziter bettle and I have a super hot shot ordered have you heard anything about it I wonder if it’s a up upgraded version of the hot shot and I have a plasma edge 2 ordered also wondering what you might know about those model’s most of those are rere you never know when they will stop making them
The Team Associated RC10 during the late 80’s. Then Few later the 1991 the RC10T was released best Rc in my option. Tamiya Avante though was innovation.
It seems expensive, especially compared to something like the turbo optima. I’m just not sure how the pricing is justified versus that. Be interesting to compare the two on the track. Also looking for a cheaper build for Xmas, the racing fighter is less than £100 itd be cool to see how it compares to the tomahawk and cat.
The Avante is really close to the Turbo optima from a quality or parts in the kit. That said I do think the Avante prices are only going one way and that’s not good for new to the hobby RC collectors.
I think it’s way over priced too. I race a 2019 Associated B6.1 and that was only £290 albeit without motor and electronics.
The price mainly comes from it being heavily overengineered compared to the competition. It had a lot of exotic materials and tooling costs were high as well. Price was an issue with the Avante even back in the late 80s.

I had an original Avante and I can definitely confirm that it was seriously fragile. I broke so many parts on it, from rather minor collisions. Such a gorgeous car though.
I have a vintage 88 and the front uprights are super thin. I don't drive it anymore as I'm sure it will just break.

Thanks for sharing that info on how to identify a V1 ‘88 Avante. Strangely, the re-re Vanquish turned out to be more pricey than the re-re Avante 2011. Are you getting a re-re Vanquish too?

You will soon forget the massive bill in a few months Michael but you will love building, running and owning your own iconic Avante for sure. It's a fantastic bit of vintage engineering and one of Tamiya's crowning achievements in my book.
I just learned there is a 84377 Aero Avante (Red Special.) Another one missing in your collection:-) But a very nice collection of Avante you have already.
The red and blue aero Avante kits are just the same. I don’t like the aero so I can’t bring myself to get two of them. I will probably just get a second body for the collection.

The re release Egress does not have titanium screws. Has normal Tamiya steel screws like the Avante.

The shops are saying back in stock in Feb/March again so??? Probably not the last we will see of this re release yet. Other countries have covid too it’s a case of getting them built I guess to satisfy demand in the chaos of covid.

Personal choice really. The Turbo will drive better but it's close on quality. You can't go wrong with these two so go with the one you like more yourself.

I must say that the Avante 2011 in silver and if you put the black Egress rims on it, it almost looks better than the Egress 😍❤️👍 otherwise I have a leal soft spot for the Egress, it feels like it is Tamiyas answer to the Turbo Optima 😊

I just ordered an Avante Black Special Edition the Tamiya number was 47390.
One year ago I bought an Egress for $400 AUD. They are now being advertised on eBay for $1200 LOL. I wonder if people are actually paying these prices or if the prices will ever go down.
Well I check sold listings on ebay to get my rough figures. Sometimes you only get 2-3 sold over the last few months so averaging out the price just gives you a rough idea. Most RC prices have a massive connection to condition obviously, so you end up with a wide range. Another thing is by country, some cars fetch different prices in different countries at different times. What I can say is we have seen a massive increase in prices across the board for vintage cars over the last 12-18 months. As a collector you would think this is a good thing, unfortunately I don't see it that way as it pushes out new RC people coming into the hobby as well as limit the cars people can acquire. Can you imaging finding out the RC cars you loved but could never afford as a child have been reissued and you can now have them again, only to find out prices have gone so high you still 30 years later can't afford them! That's not good for the hobby. :(
@@RCKickschannel I have been lucky that I have been able to buy the kits I wanted (Hot-Shot, Fox and Egress) when they were still reasonably priced. But now that they are selling for such high prices I would rather just buy something more modern like an Axial kit.

I like the Avante but for that price you can get a top of the line 4wd race buggy from Team Associated, TLR or Yokomo. And all those cars would be way faster and have plenty of replacement parts available.
I don't think most people who buy an avante would get it for racing. It is not competing with those buggies. Maybe in 1988 it was designed to compete with the likes of Schumacher and yokomo but now it is pure nostalgia

Tbh I’m waiting for Chinese knock offs brands to make more Tamiya copy’s. they recently made this high lift copy which honestly is quite decent. I’d love to have some of those to actually drive, break and fix, maybe do them my way, slap 2s brushless in and modern shocks without getting mean looks from all the ‘’enthusiasts’’.
Hate this collector market sitting on cars drooling over box art, driving prices to the sky. Modelling is cool but if this car is meant to run, run it. There are model car kits that aren’t rc where you can really show off painting and assembling skills. Take those and put them on display instead.
As a kid I couldn’t afford any of those, had to get by with nikko toys with spiky wheels, watching them in hobby shops and now I’m an adult and still cant afford, or rather, justify one.
Got some arrmas, traxases, axials, losis. They drive million times better at much lower price. Might just get a set of spiky wheels and clear shell to slap on rustler 2wd and forget about getting an tamiya.
They were gorgeous but too heavy and over engineered to be competitive on a national level back in the day. I drove a Yokomo YZ10 and slaughtered the Avante.
It would probably do better today in the vintage class, though. Or at least the more durable rere. Vintage 4WD typically runs 13.5T brushless, which is a lot more power than what you guys were running back then.
The price of these kits are too high, if you have £500 spare you could get the Traxxas Maxx that would totally kick the avante's ass all day long, yes vintage Tamiya's look fantastic but not at these high prices :(
Traxxas' are souless clones of one another with no character whatsoever. Yeah they are fast and tough but I would no way in hell take one over an avante. It's not just about speed. Also traxxas ain't that good on the track either. How many people race them? 🤔🤔
Traxxas Maxx, well that couldn’t be further away from an Avante if it tried. Completely different animals and impossible to compare the two. If it’s just about speed and toughness you would never purchase a single vintage RC. The new bashers are built like tanks and can take a kicking like nothing I’ve seen before. The Avante family isn’t about that at all.

I had the Black Special Avante and I don't want to own another one again. The worst rc body design ever. It's a pain the neck to open it 🙃 BTW, I love Tamiya and I own few of them but never Avante again!

Yep, it’s getting that way. I was super lucky and picked up most of my Avante collection used and a few years ago when prices sat around £150-£200 max. Now we are in the £300-£500 that’s just bonkers!
The short answer is no. I just bought one in 2024.
I'm building one as I type this from Tamico. Looks like we will see the Avante for the foreseeable future :)

This only appeals to one who doesn't mind the lack of bang for the buck in contrast with superior performing buggies that look good for a better price, a la Typhon 3S from ARRMA.
So, if you want to get an older Vanquish or Avante......don't bother, they're too fragile;);)

I never understood the fascination with the Avante. It’s not one of the best looking buggies in my opinion and it’s sooo over priced.
Every Tamiya buggy released after the Hotshot series looks like a goofy sci-fi moon rover to me.
