  • Finally, it arrives in the UK!
In this video, we take a good look at the just-released vintage racing buggy from Tamiya, the Egress Black. Can we really justify this price point for this kit or has Tamiya just pushed it too far now.
A massive thank you to Dave at RD Models for helping make this content possible and for getting the kit to me as fast as he could. This kit was purchased at cost and no restrictions have been placed on RCKicks. The opinions in this video are that of my own.

Got mine about a week and a half ago. Did it on pre-order. A little pricey, but still less then trying to purchase a vintage one. It gave me an opportunity to have an egress until I can justify and save for the original.

I guess the US got lucky this time. In August Tower Hobbies sold the Avante Black for 562.10 and when the Egress Black went up for pre order in Sept it was 404.60. These prices are before their discounts that are typically 40-80 dollars off. Personally I see the Egress black as a bargain as here it is even priced less than the current price of the Top Force Evo. Granted the Top Force does come with an esc and silver can.

I paid $367 for an Egress Black Edition through Tower Hobbies. If I wanted to get a 2013 edition looking online they are at least double that. If you don't already own an Egress the price is pretty cheap.

We have gotten a little spoiled , 5 years any Egress would be a big deal. Enjoy it for what it is. It’s an Egress, if missed the boat on the last run this is a win. Dye the wheels, trade out the hicaps and get MCI decals for the sun. The Egress is ICONIC! And the Egress is already hopped up, MAYBE they could’ve added the titanium screws. Nothing else to upgrade the car with.

Gavin, not sure where you're seeing prices but the Avante Black edition is going for at least $150-$200 more than the Egress Black. I picked up an Egress Black for $430...that was the Tower price. Avante black editions are almost $600 (if you can find them)
I know the standard Egress (if you can find one) is going for north of $700. I missed out on the standard Egress so I'm happy I was able to find one at a reasonable price. Although at the price point I do think Tamiya shouldvhave included a motor.

I bought it abroad and it was a good £150 less and that’s why I decided to get it on my channel, that and I’ve never had an avante/egress before. I have an egress rere box art, but I bought it built never used. I bought the black edition juast to build the egress, my second favourite tamiya car after the top force evo2 I made recently. I have bought some cool stuff for the black ed, I am making a glossy black car with minimal stickers, only silver and white ones. I bought the big bore aireation shocks for it, and some other candy. Just waiting on titanium screws before I start=)
I have the optima mid from before, and finished my javelin in white today. The avante black is a very much less driveable car, if your going to drive it go egress. I upgraded my avante with tourque splitter and hicaps, the egress still drives much better. I need to work on that avante. If you want the advanced build and put it on the shelf get the avante black IMO=)

Gavin, in Austria and Germany the Egress Black Edition is cheaper than the Avante Black rere, it is exact €60 difference between the Avante (499,90) and the egress (429,90)... that is o.k. from my point of view as there is no motor in the egress... thinking about getting one 😁

You are totally right, the kit has no motor and is still extremly expensive. I dont like the route they go, first the td4 with some flaws (no slipper, diff with plastic nut, flexible servo mount, hard to access rear gearbox), then butchering up the hotshot 2 and destroying the design and now totally overpriced egress. If blockhead motors would have designed a new car that would have been great, instead just hijacking the classics.

    Price = because Tamiya.
No Eggres should cost more than an Avante purely because it's cheaper to produce being mostly plastic.
The fact it has no special motor added is a big slap in the face, maybe Tamiya have looked at the market and realised half of these won't even get built and the other half will just be put on a shelf so why bother adding a motor.
Also Tamiya has such a huge Japanese and Asian Market that they cater to that they price them how they want to. I guess they think we give you so many good cheap budget and medium price kits you won't mind paying more for this as it's mostly collectors buying them.

I think the real issue is the rip off price in the UK. It’s £309 at Tamico in Germany (about £370 after sales tax at 19%) which is £150 less than in the UK. It’s daft that it is cheaper to buy from Germany and have it individually shipped to the UK for less than you can buy it from UK stores (where they have the benefit of bulk shipping). I don’t think many would complain if the UK price was £370. For context the Egress was £269 in 1989 so this was always a premium rate kit from Tamiya.

The ONLY rerelease I would spend 1000 bucks on would be the MIP 4-10 LEDGEND !!!! Thanks for the great work Gavin!!!

In isolation, yes, too pricey really. I do however prefer the look over the older version, so after looking at the sums I sold my NIB re-release for just over £500 and bought the Black edition from Europe for £411 to my door. That made it far more palatable.

For the same price, you can get two newly released ProCats, also vintage and better performance. I am outraged that Tamiya thought for one second it was acceptable to pull that "no so cheap" trick. Thank you for the brilliant videos Gavin. You have a heck of a collection! Do you have your eyes on a Hirobo Alien mid or PM Maxima? Would be so nice to see them on the show.

I think is the new math, where you get less for more and it's supposed to be better (for Tamiya). I for one will wait for the special, special edition with a motor that includes a special decal that reads "Egress Black Special Special Special Edition" 😂. Or I will not buy one. It's disgraceful from Tamiya, a motor with a sticker would have made me, and many more customers, consider buying one. But... que será será!

The Egress is the dream car of my youth and I own at least 15 different RC cars which I got over the past years. I always was looking for an egress and I missed the 2013 rerelease. Did find some new in box over the last year and they all did ask for around 600€. So when I read that there will be another release I instantly preordered. I’d rather have the silver body and the orange decals but I take what I get. So now I have an Egress black and I am afraid to open the box because I don’t want to destroy the image of the dream car I build up in my head.

Tamico do some good prices for sure but we get hit (thanks to Brexit) 20% of the cost of the kit INCLUDING the shipping cost. Also we have to pay another $12.00USD “handling fee” This all adds up but even with all this, people in the UK can still get a better price from Tamico vs the local RC shop or UK online RC website sometimes. It’s bonkers to see this situation as it just weakens the UK RC stores.

A great kit, ruined by a gigantic price tag. None of the Kyosho Legend cars are even that much. My Yokomo CAL3 wasn't even that much, and it's a proper racing buggy! The fact that it's a Special Edition, still doesn't warrant the price tag, no special one off parts, (ESC or motor to commemorate it's release), just a black set of wheels and body. I'm sure the collectors that have plenty of cash don't mind, but those of us that try and budget, surely won't justify the spend... Like myself. Tamiya didn't even need to create any extra special tooling to make the kit, as they already have the 2013 model tooling.

What would you say about the re release top force Vs the Egress Black? I have the Top Force new in the box. When I have time I will build it. However I was super excited about the Cat xls re release and I hated it. I always saw them as a kid and wished i could afford one when I was rocking my Boomerang. It was a piece of Junk. The cat was a huge let down and a bunch of money spent as I purchased literally every upgrade for that car. The Avante was another dream car and it was ok. Honestly my boomerang out performed both of them.
At least the Avante was a great build. My Javelin as well was a fun build and good car to run. I am excited about the Top Force, And the Egress is suposed to be a better running Avante, so.... from that point of view what do you think.?.? and........ how about a Astute Black Specal, Really!

Gavin, why does this cost so much in the U.K.? Before a coupon.. the EBE was $404.??.... After said coupon and Tax.. $355.96 or something... So I was surprised , that the EBE is pricey for what is and isn't there... I was more surprised to see the pre-order at such a low price. Compared to the price of the 2013 really release.. another thing that's blowing my mind is that the pre-order for the Hotshot II blockhead edition.. is listed at a price of $214... Which is way cheaper than the re re of the original hot shot... Which costs less than the blockhead wild one but like $35 or something like that... Usually a four-wheel drive car would cost more... In conclusion... While the EBE isn't that special as the avante one... I'm glad I was able to get it for the reduced price that I could.... It's still a beautiful car... But I agree with a lot of what you're saying about it.
