  • Hon. Ahmed Hussen entered Canada a child refugee, and today is Minister of Immigration and Refugees. He shares his experience of Canada: a country of immense generosity, but also one that struggles with systemic racism, and paints a bold picture of how a country can become truly great. Ahmed Hussen is Canada’s Immigration Minister and Member of Parliament for the riding of York South-Weston. A lawyer and social activist, he has a proven track record of leadership and community empowerment. Born and raised in Somalia, Ahmed immigrated to Canada in 1993; In 2002, he co-founded the Regent Park Community Council, which helped secure a $500 million revitalization project for the area, and he has been widely recognized for his significant contributions to the city of Toronto. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Let me tell you a story about privilege. Inverse privilege to be specific. I am a 24 years old Polish citizen trying to immigrate to Canada as part of the Express entry program. I speak 5 languages including English (CLB 11) and French (CLB 10), I have a Master's Degree in Translation and a year of skilled work experience. I could definitely make it to the pool. What I don't have are 12,475 Canadian dollars i.e. the minimum proof of funds for a skilled immigrant. This is not the type of money we earn that easily here in Europe, especially at my age. My parents are broke so it will take me a lifetime to collect all the money. I mean, if I had that kind of cash, I wouldn't be here searching for a better life & trying to immigrate to Canada!
    Yet, refugees can enter Canada and receive social housing without any problems. Now, who is being discriminated here? Not cool Canada, not cool.

      Patryk, a close friend of mine from the US is trying to immigrate to Canada legally. He has been married to a Canadian for 20 years and they are now planning to retire in Canada. He has spent thousands of dollars on legal fees, several doctors appointments and psychiatric evaluation. This has been going on for 2 years now and he still has not received his permanent residence card. He also is highly intelligent, has his PHd and they have grandchildren and lots of family. So not cool Canada...….Wish you could come over......I love the Polish people here.

      You're right on the money. Canada's immigration policy is two-faced. Many of us can see it, but many canadians care more that the prime minister talks about diversity, feminism, and legalizing weed than real issues. Best of luck

    As an immigrant living in Canada (immigrated from Kenya in 2009), I find this talk insulting to the generosity of Canadians. This country has given me opportunities beyond my wildest dreams! I experienced worse discrimination from people I share same skin color back in my home country. I’m not saying there’s no racism in Canada, but it’s nowhere near the discrimination perpetuated through tribalism in most African countries!

    From some comments, we can see that Minister Hussen is so right. Some Canadians just simply refuse to see themselves as they are, lacking compassion, lacking the strength to look at how they do treat people who are different than they are. Shame on those who yell out their racism, distrust and hate. We would like to say that is not Canadian but in fact it is Canadian. Just read on.

      We have access to the internet that provides us with a picture of where these people come from and the aims of their greater communities. Their communities are not our communities. If we take a look at the values, customs, morals and traditions of Somalia and Muslim regions, why wouldn't the people share any of those when they come here? If they do share and bring said attributes, how are they not making our country a worse off place just like the country they come from that is so terrible? Look at what Europeans did moving here en masse before the propaganda of war coward senior Trudeau. Europeans made one of the most desirable places in the world to live and have given such rights to minorities they are so entitled/ungrateful they make videos talking about systemic racism while holding the status of immigration minister.

    • @benfowler6052
      @benfowler6052 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Why don't they fight and work to make their homes better? For centuries Europeans have done the same and never gave up, so why is that these people seem to be unable to do the same for their own?

      Maybe that's because standard of living in Canada has been static, or declining since around the time Mr Hussen arrived. Our government only has 1 way to grow the economy, and that's by ramping up immigration. Housing prices have doubled or tripled in Vancouver/Toronto in the last 20 years, and wages are flat. Impossible to find a doctor.... Yet the government, 1 trick pony, still insists on bringing in 1+ million in the next 3 years. Sorry, I love immigration too, when it benefits those already here (shortage of skilled trades, more doctors), but this only benefits the party who lets them in, and the ultra rich. No one else who is already here.

    It is (though it should not be) surprising to me the commonality that people of color have in societies that boast diversity but are predominantly caucasian. The anecdotes of this chap, and the stories shared with me by some Afro-Brits I've recently met,as well as those I've heard from an Aboriginal mate from Australia that I correspond with are astoundingly similar to my own experience in the U.S. Likewise, am I bewildered by the clap back of whites in all these areas, in their assumed superiority, cry out "What privilege?". The fact that you presume superiority dictates in and of itself absolute privilege. I find the indignation rather amusing. How dare we expect equality in these societies that claim to be so democratic.

    he was tasked with the job of making housing affordable to canadians irrespective of their backgrounds. He also had immigration portfolio. While being a minister he purchased an investment property. Was he buying a property that was going to lose in value. Certainly not. Obviously property price skyrocked. he should do another show and explain the ethics and rationale behind the transaction. His job performace? Canada is mired in a housing crisis. it is certainly not a product of any discrimination by anyone. It seems there is no mechanism to hold anyone in public life accountable for engaging conflict of interest activities. If this were to happen in some other countries, he would have gone long ago. Housing crisis affects every one and it affects minorities as well. Poor, middle class canadians irrespective of their backgrounds, are on the brink of low quality life and poverty.

      @@user-kv8go8pw9q That is his selling point. Actions speak louder than words. Facts are availabe on public domain. There are ministers and member of parliments who are not engaged in house hunting activites. Multiple property buying activity is contributing to housing crisis in Canada and it affects minorities more than anyone else. it is ethically and morally wrong to engage in the very same activity by a highly paid public official whose office was connected oneway or another to the housing matter.

      @Qaddare I first appreciate your efforts to explain Islam. I googled, "Islam law vs sharia law" and many used both terms as interchangeable. I know that different regions interpret and handle Islamic law in very different ways which could explain why Al Shabaab is more authoritarian than for example Morocco. Maybe objectively studying the life of Muhammad and comparing that to Al Shabaab would give some clarity to why the latter acts as they do.

    He never saw a mailbox, or a laundry machine until he was 16, and he's in charge of Canadian immigration policy 25 years later. Sorry but you should not be allowed to hold federal office in Canada if you weren't born here. This guy just flung open the doors to immigrants with serious health conditions, even though it's impossible to find a doctor or receive treatment without a long wait time. Canadians are dying in hospital hallways.

      I don't care what hardships he experienced in his life. I care about what his and Justin's policies are doing to our great nation. This TED Talk really highlights why things have gone off the rails so much. Instead of being thankful for being accepted in the best country of the word, all Ahmed can see is 'racism' which explains why he is more loyal to illegal migrants that Canadians. I don't see how it's hate speech to listen to his side of the story, in his own words, and try to reconcile that with what his actions have been as immigration minister.

So many people think that people on social assistance are lazy and don't want to improve their lives when I think the opposite is the case. Many people that fall on hard times use the system to improve their education and learn the skills they need to become successful however that looks to them. • @rogerc23
      @rogerc23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Omega, no it doesn't make me think environmental factors are the reason. DNA and genes are the reason. These are averages, not absolutes. It doesn't mean every Korean and Japanese has the same IQ, it means on average they are higher. If everyone in the country has the same environment, then you would see the same score. Also you see the same score averages for diverse countries so it's not environment. It also doesn't mean every Hong Konger is smarter than ever Somali. 2 of the smartest 5 people I have know are African. But IQ does tell the story of human success, and countries with low IQ people do not fair better

    • @rogerc23
      @rogerc23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Omega, IQ doesn't have anything to do with school system. IQ is measured at different ages and it tests short-term memory, analytical thinking, mathematical ability and spatial recognition, it does not attempt to measure the amount of information you have learned but rather your capacity to learn.
