  • We're finally receiving spring temperatures here in The Green Yard! This means we can start planting our over-wintered tropical trees. We're planting a beautiful Thornless Mexican Lime Tree in the garden area of The Green Yard. It's going to add some fantastic fruit to our growing production. We picked the spot of this tree and prepped the hole earlier in the winter to make sure the PH was adjusted in time for planting. With proper watering and maintenance this tree will become a fixture of our yard.

? Please...we have a Cuban lemon tree planted 2 yrs ago. It was doing well until this past summer, leaves burnt & fell off. There is still no new growth however, the branches are green. It seems to be completely in the native clay soil.
    Please advise. Thanks

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! This past summer was really hard on a lot of the fruiting and flowering trees here in the valley. It sounds like it may be in shock and struggling to get back to a place where it can push out new leaves. If it were me and that was my tree, the first thing I would do is add about 8-12 inches of mulch around the root zone of the tree. After that I would add in some agricultural sulfur to try to lower the PH of the soil, which allows the tree to take up any nutrients that exist there. This may or may not work and unfortunately without knowing exactly what your soil is like I can't advise on watering. I will say though that most of our tropical trees like infrequent, deep watering. I hope this helps and that you are able to save your tree! Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Nice! I planted a mexican lime around same time as you in Chandler! How's yours doing now? Mine was having a tough time in the summer, out in the open, lots of leaf burn, so I rigged a 40% shadecloth for it. it's recovered well, with new shoots twice now. Hopefully it won't need it this year, we'll see.

Hi, mine is actually doing really well! I ended up not shading it last summer (it gets full sun all day long) and I didn't protect it this winter either. The tree has grown to over six feet, I have a bunch of flowers and new growth coming out right now. That is great that it has recovered so well! Yes, hopefully we won't need it this year. I will have to do an update video on mine soon.

    Did it survive the winter?

Hi Walden, thank you for watching! Yes, it did very well and survived it's first winter in the ground. It is currently thriving and I have harvested dozens of limes. I filmed a update and harvesting video as well if you want to learn more about the growth of the tree. Let me know if you have any other questions.
