Excelent video . Apox1990 I worked at a private airport just north of Toronto Canada . Had to pre - heat Cesna 150s and 170s , used Propane pre-heaters , ( no Engine covers ) had to be careful of Enginen fires from over priming .
Great video, thanks man. I've got my oil pan heater plugged in AND my hairdryer ready in my PA18....its a long ways from Alaska but its 22 degrees in Texas!!
I know all you guys are going to think that this is crazy but the air service that did the flying at our remote camps in northern Canada ie minus 40 diluted the oil by feeding av gas into the oil hopper (Beavers and Otters) ran the engine till oil pressure dropped then shut it down. Did a preheat like the demo in the utube and after start up by the time the engine was up to normal temp all the gas would have evaporated. We also used same system on all our machinery. Cats ran the diesels all night only shut down for oil changes.
I added a tannis engine block heater and two pads. My mini generator pushes it fine and it warms up the big engine quickly. Otherwise, I have a red dragon propane of which Ive never used…yet. As for engine covers…I’ve never had much faith in the big blanket types. By the numbers i haven’t seen much notable improvement. Ive always wondered why someone doesn’t design and make an INFLATIBLE one with a few layers. Lighter for sure, compact and vastly more R value than all these blanket type bulky engine covers. Thanks for sharing….and dont forget in the old days they drained the oil when they landed, put in a can, then heated it on the stove the next morning and poured it back in. Watch the OLD video “My Alaska” if you can find it
I've heard the tannis works well, just can't stomach the cost and complexity when I've got such good results for really cheap. Also yes I love the stories of draining the oil and heating it on the stove!
For the ultimate cheapest setup, I know lots of people just use oil pan heaters from NAPA... I think the EZ heat ones are pretty overpriced, but maybe worth it? And there are definitely cheaper MSR-type stove options. I just like the MSR because I trust them in extreme cold...
Be careful with open flame near your engine. I had a engine fire with a similar setup, MSR stove and pipe. I think you need a flame arrestor grill. Better with a catalytic camping stove
It’s ridiculous the efforts people go through to preheat these dinosaur legacy engines compared to their personal cars or trucks. My 915 has a limitation of -4°F before needing preheat.
Its ironic that people hate modern efi engines but then do all this. You use petrol to power the generator to make electricity to waste as heat. You could just use a petrol stove. Or just use a modern engine. What do you do in an emergency, just wait 2 hours?
Nobody hates modern efi engines. It so happens that there is no efi engine option for an airframe as capable as this. If you don't want to fly an old engine, don't, but why comment?
You guys don't even understand the acronym that you are throwing around. EFI literally stands for electronic fuel injection. You do not have an electronically controlled fuel injection system on your carbon cub. I know. I work on them.

awesome tail wheel Planes amaze me how they set up or sit back a special breed of Aircraft Love The Bush Planes o yes
Try the dryer directly in the muffler. Works for me each time
Good video, man! Thanks for the info on your pre-heat setup.
thanks!

It’s in my Cessna manual- up to 50% oil dilution with avgas is allowed!
Vehicle interior heaters work good too.
Get a Reiff/tannis heater. Well worth the cost in my opinion.
good info! would love to see a vlog on a backcountry ski day this winter!
I've got one video from a while back, but more coming for sure!

you should come to patagonia soon !!!
planning on it!!
Do you have anything on your plane for icing detection? Check out the sensor from Pegasus in Alberta Canada
nope I rarely get my self into a situation where I am worried about ice at all

For sure, I always monitor it closely when I'm using the stove. Curious what you think caused your fire?

Hahaha no doubt, I hope a 915/916 is in my future one day!
Tell me about it!
Hey that hair dryer have an STC? You can’t pee in a bag with out buying some kind of STC. Go experimental!
Haha I'd love to go experimental, but luckily the hair dryer is temporary... I don't keep it on while flying ;)

@builttofly83 No EFI engine option? That's not true.
@@builttofly83my carbon cub is fuel injected. What are you talking about there is not an option for a cub?? Makes no sense
@@chippyjohn1yeah idk what this dude is talking about and he doesn’t either. My carbon cub is fuel injected as well as many many other bush planes
