In this video we'll show you how to work with drum brakes in replacing the rear brake shoes on this 2003 Ford Ranger. If you need to purchase the parts, please pay attention to the brake shoe size as Ford offered 2 options. You have to remove the brake trim and measure either the inner diameter of the brake drum or the outer length of the brake shoe to verify if you have 9" or 10" rear brakes. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
YOU are a godsend! This is the only vid I have found that does a rear left drum job and matches the emergency brake fitting that I have on my 02 Ranger!
Evidently someone put an 03 axle and wheels on my used 02 Ranger! Now I understand alot of things!
This looked like such a complicated process with all those spring & such in a small area. But I'll be damned if I pay Schwabs 600 bucks when only 100 of its parts & thats with new drums(waited to long to have them turned). This video made it so easy. Make sure you do what he says & do one at a time so you can look at the other. Mines a 95 so it was a lil different, just the e brake plate.Mine had a pin with a u-shape thingy to hold it in. The drum is the hardest part. Sure it took me all day instead of a couple hours. But I saved 500 bucks. Thanks man!!!!!

A guy that doesn't use his brakes. That's a cool dude!! It could also be a sign that the wheel cylinders are seized.
And FYI: They make rear brake tools that will make this job soooo!! much easier and a lot less dangerous than using a screw driver on the springs. But you know that.

this video was the awesome!! Thank you for sharing this information. I had work done to my 2007 ranger after I was side swiped by another driver, but the mechanic who done the work didn't do something correctly because several months later I could hear a grinding noise. So I took the thing apart trying to fix it myself but when I removed the hub all the springs and hardware just kinda fell out on the ground which left me clueless on how to put it back together. This truck has the exact same setup for my truck and I whipped into action as soon as I watched this video.. Thanks again.
ALWAYS replace wheel cylinders, when replacing shoes. A ) they might not be leaking now, but they are prone to leaking after new shoes are installed. B ) especially on Ford trucks, the pistons are "sticky" or "gummy" and prone to locking up the rear wheels upon braking. only trying to help, been doing this 35 years.
I have a Ford Ranger STX 97's American, and these tips are very valuable.
Whoever invented this breaking system should be slapped. Gangster style ! Alot of over thinking it seems with all the springs,levers and adjusting components
It's been over 20 years since I had my 1984 Ford Thunderbird. I forgot how to do drum brakes. lol

brake tools are way better than pliers... easy on hands.. spring apply/removal tool is sooo OP.... that little tool u used is soo sweet to use/pliers is crazy /might bend stuff.. .. thx video

Old hardware....no no! The correct order of disassembly is: return springs, horsehoe clip on the ebrake lever, retainer springs then that long lower counter spring. The star adjuster then just drops out as you remove the shoe and you pop the ebrake stud out and that's it. Assembly is the reverse, the bridge plate first, then the adjuster cable loop, on to the shorter green spring from the front shoe, then the long yellow spring is from the rear shoe and also holds the adjuster cable pivot plate goes on last, hook down on pass side, up on driver side. Did these work right the way they were put on?

My ABS light was staying on and front brakes were locking up. I cleaned sensors. Now front brakes are perfect but now the rear right is locking up and ABS light comes on and off.
Any suggestions?

Outstanding video. You need to get a box of rubber gloves. Not so much for safety but just to avoid the aggravation of having greasy paws. Once you start using them you will never go back.

Question, why do the rangers have rear drum brakes instead of disks?
Integrand this mostly has to do with technology and timing, disc brakes on the rear started probably in the 90’S and continued to replace drum brakes for a long time. The newer the vehicle, the more likely it is to have 4 wheel disc brakes

I think you're talking about the adjuster cable??? Those are only 4 bucks for 2. Search online.
A Phillip's screwdriver works pretty good for getting the springs on

You're making it a lot more dangerous to yourself and perhaps damaging hardware by not using the proper and inexpensive tools available here
