I didn't get this as a kid but seeing a Future Sesame Street where everything is run-down and all the people there are miserable and living in poverty is actually pretty grim.
I didn't know Sesame Street did one about Elmo saving Christmas until now and I think Elmo is incredible and he's always been my favourite in Sesame Street. Also Christmas always happens during Summer here in Australia which happens in Pugwall's Summer in the Christmas episode.
Since Elmo traveled through time forward and back in this Christmas special, Elmo has now distinctly split the Sesame Street timeline! The two timelines are thus: 1) The changed timeline, which becomes the present day Sesame Street show. Everyone, except Elmo and Lightning, are Variants set towards a more optimistic future. 2) The original timeline which Elmo left behind, doomed to be Christmas forever. With the exception of Elmo, ALL of the original Sesame Street characters from the beginning of the show are trapped here. With the special presumably taking place on Christmas of 1996, that means they have experienced Christmas for 9877 days in a row to the date of this post. Way to go, Santa...
This was the last Christmas special of the classic era. A year after this they changed the viewership age of the audience and slowly changed format/how many eps a yr were produced. At least this era went out with a big one. The Slimey going to the moon arc was the last plot line of Season 29.
As a young child, this was THE Christmas special for me. Like, my mother knew how to sew stuffed animals, so she made me a Moo-Bunny for Christmas one year, I was THAT into Elmo Saves Christmas. Then, a few years later, I watched Mrs Doubtfire for the first time and was like "Why does his gay brother sound like the Easter Bunny??"
My little sister, who loved Elmo when she was younger, and I used to watch this special ALL THE TIME! It’s such a nostalgia bomb and the interludes with Grover and Mr. Johnson and Maria blowing up at the toasters make me laugh so hard! And Big Bird’s rendition of “All I Want For Christmas is You” is the only one I will willingly listen to.
Other Sesame Street specials you gotta cover this year are: 123 Count With Me Kids Favourite Songs (both 1 and 2) Elmopalooza Elmos’ World The Wild Wild West Elmo’s Musical Adventure Elmo’s World Happy Holidays
I was hoping you'd get to this one eventually! This is my 7th favorite Sesame Street special overall, and it just does so much right. It balances the main cast well and gives each of them screen time, it has great songs, it isn’t afraid to delve into dark and depressing territory, and the message it sends is one of the greatest messages they could ever send. Though I have to correct you on two things: 1. E&B weren't named after the characters from IAWL, it was just a freaky coincidence that they shared names. 2. Elmo isn't five. He's three and a half. But still, this was a really good video. I suggest tackling Sesame Street Stays Up Late (Or Sesame Street Celebrates Around The World, as it's more commonly known) next. It takes what makes this special so great and makes it 10x better.
I watch this Sesame Street Christmas special last Christmas along with the Nutcracker special. Also, the Elmo Saves Christmas special is a remembrance to Bob and Luis.
Bishop’s Wife is free to watch on TH-cam! Oh, god- this movie. I love it because it admits that Christmas every day would be a disgusting idea. This is not as good as the Fairly Odd Parents Christmas special from (2004? Jeez! That special is 20 years old) but did the Fairly Odd Parents have Harvey Fierstein as the Easter Bunny? I don’t think so! Also also- if Santa has baby reindeer in the North Pole, does that mean he’s training them for in an event where one of the main reindeer dies of old age, or gets in a horrible accident? Cuz, that’s pretty dark!
Do you remember when Maya Angelou did those little inserts on Sesame Street? One of them she teaches Elmo the clapping game featuring the letter of the day. She goes “M. My name is Maya. And I love to eat mangos and marshmallows. And I love to play marbles.”
I don't think i saw this before with Sesame Street. As you may know, we celebrate Christmas in Australia in Summer, i think the stuff in Christmas i remember seeing pretty recently was Blinky Bill's White Christmas, Tabaluga & Leo: A Christmas Adventure & Bluey's 2 Christmas EPs. Currently on H2O: Just Add Water near the end of S2 before heading into S3, then moving into something new or childhood nostalgic which there is some or lots. I did enjoy Planet Lulin on ABC iview as a sci-fi fan & watcher of ABC in Australia for years.
I remember watching reruns of this on channel 9 as a kid. Also I looked up The Bishops Wife and realized that I am more familiar with its 90s remake The Preachers Wife, which you should also check at some point during the holidays.
I love when TH-camrs review Sesame Street content, especially the home videos from the 90s and 2000s. I used to have a huge collection of Sesame Street tapes when I was a kid, so it’s always so nostalgic for me.
8:38 Holy crap! So glad this exists. And the simple fact that Charles Durning plays Santa in this and Kermit is also featured makes me happy but concerned.
I just remembered a movie you’d love. It’s called It Happened One Christmas. It stars Marlo Thomas and it’s a gender reversal of It’s A Wonderful Life. Oh, and Orson Wells is in it too.
That's a cute special! anytime i see a jim hensen puppet, it now reminds me of the Atlanta puppet museum! btw, did something happen with the original file of your bmpcc4k recording? I noticed you vo'd more that usual
That was so fun at the museum! Yes, this video, the previous one and the one that has yet to be released were all filmed at once and the audio had many issues so unfortunately I had to do some extra VO work.
This seemed like a cute special and I laughed when you were all "It's The Ice Cream Bunny" Cause that's what popped in my head as well. Great review Avery, Can't wait to see what you review next. Also I was wondering if you got my package yet?
There’s also A Special Sesame Street Christmas. It’s based on A Christmas Carol and it aired the same year as Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. For the longest time it was considered lost media until it was finally released on DVD.
I had no idea they had Maya Angelou herself on Sesame Street! And I agree Rosita is underrated!

Way to go, Santa...
Yeah, what do you think about it? Santa caused Sesame Street to go into dystopia
I also agree that Rosita is underrated. But luckily she’s actually in a lot of episodes nowadays.
I'm so glad Elmo prevented a repeat of the Christmas tragedy in Gremlins!
I think that Elmo Saves Christmas was among my fist instances of the ever magical thing: existentialism.
Oh my gosh. I have the vaguest memories of seeing this once when I was little. I didn't realize Maya Angelou was the narrator!

I understand that people may think Elmo is annoying but as a kid I loved him. Unlike Barney who was nothing but happy 24/7
I adore Elmo!
He's my second favorite Sesame Street character.

Omg that's amazing!

Disney only bought the rights to The Muppet Show muppets and it happened in 2004.
Ah ok

i remember i used to have this on VHS along with New Years Eve on Sesame Street
The Ice Cream Bunny has been an inside joke with my family for years 😂
haha one of the guys I work with has an Ice Cream Bunny shirt and I lost my shit when I saw it
I don't think i saw this before with Sesame Street. As you may know, we celebrate Christmas in Australia in Summer, i think the stuff in Christmas i remember seeing pretty recently was Blinky Bill's White Christmas, Tabaluga & Leo: A Christmas Adventure & Bluey's 2 Christmas EPs.

I love talking about anything Henson made, it's a favorite of mine!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuffMe too. I share Muppet facts with anyone who’ll listen. 😂😂😂
8:38 Holy crap! So glad this exists.

Charles played Doc hopper in the Muppet movie in 1979 no wonder Santa and Kermit don’t share seems together in this
moo bunnies for everyone.
So glad you're covering this bizarre gem!
If every day is Christmas, do we really have Christmas anymore?
I liked this video and are you going to do a video on the New Year's Eve special Sesame Street celebrates around the world?
What The Hell Elmo
I just remembered a movie you’d love. It’s called It Happened One Christmas. It stars Marlo Thomas and it’s a gender reversal of It’s A Wonderful Life. Oh, and Orson Wells is in it too.
Did Fairly Oddparents rip this off?
6:28 - Everything's better with Harvey Fierstein.
Agreed
Never knew that about Bert and Ernie :) I was a bit averse to watching that special but having seen these clips it actually looks good :)
YEEEEEEEE! CHILDHOOD!
I really payed attention to the intro this time. Perry, staring into my very sole. And I don't have one of those.
That's a cute special! anytime i see a jim hensen puppet, it now reminds me of the Atlanta puppet museum!

Yes I approve of this video..well made
Have you covered Christmas Eve on Sesame Street? It's one of my favorite holiday traditions.
Yes I have!
There’s also A Special Sesame Street Christmas. It’s based on A Christmas Carol and it aired the same year as Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. For the longest time it was considered lost media until it was finally released on DVD.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I thought you might have but couldn't remember!
I hope your holidays were great!
They were! Hope yours were too!
