    This is the first time I've seen someone talk about netbooks and Eee PCs in a positive light lol. I'm glad, because these little things were so cool to me in middle school-- just thinking about a fully fledged windows experience inside a tiny little form factor would've blown me away as a kid. Funny thing, my first "real" laptop was an EeePC 1201T, which I still was enamored by, fun little machines.

      You and me both! I was amazed that something this small and light and for the low price they charged, could run windows as well as it did. I took mine everywhere and still think they are awesome little machines!

    I own the exact same model (same color too) and it keeps working to this day! It's in fact my go-to retro machine, and I use it to get my Doom and Warcraft 3 fix almost on a daily basis :) Running Windows XP and DOSBox, it's a pretty decent retro machine, and more often than not I have it connected to a big CRT, old school speakers and USB keyboard and mouse.
    Add an external DVD drive, and it can also play DVD movies pretty well.
    It's also a pretty great emulation box for the earlier generation consoles (e.g. Sega Genesis), the tiny Atom CPU does the job without breaking a sweat.
    Anyway, thanks for the video, it's very nice to see the EEEPC get some love!

      Thats awesome, I've not used mine a lot for emulation, but hooking it up to a CRT and using it as a multi platform emulator sounds like great idea. I guess I've got a new project to try!

    This is the best eeePC ever made. I remember I made it work for over 10h undervolting the CPU. It was great to take along and battery lasted all day. The only drawback was the stock SSD. I have also used nLite to customize my XP installation.

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, as soon as the stock SSD was replaced with something better and the OS was de-bloated they made fantastic machines!

    Thank you for nice dose of nostalgia and retro review!
    Recently I rescued this particular netbook from e-waste. All that was missing was power adapter.
    I took some 12V adapter and modified the connector on it to fit the power input on the netbook and it is now alive!
    Battery on 98% health.
    It's interesting piece of hardware :)
    Thanks again, your channel is very interesting and your presentation is very nicely done.
    It would be interesting to see some older ThinkPads review, people really like those machines.

      Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you've found an Eee PC of your own! 98% battery health is pretty impressive, my battery is not all it was when new, but still holds a respectable amount of charge for its age.
      I'd love to take a look at some of the older ThinkPads, but eBay prices on those are fairly prohibitive, I am keeping an eye out for some though!

    this was my dream laptop in 2007-2010 when i was in hugh school and i don’t know any about the computer and i think this is better than my asus rog with i7 first generation because that time i think smaller = faster 😅.

    I think the smartphone also killed netbooks.
    The netbook allowed one to connect to wifi and watch TH-cam, surfe the web and watch XVID videos (ehem) on a small device. The smartphone came and became that thing, and you always had it on you. So bringing a netbook along often wasn't as useful anymore.
    My 2 cents...

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, that is a really good point. I guess the smart phone would do 95% of the things most people were using one of these for. And as you say, you are taking the phone anyway, so why bring the netbook?

      I remember selling a whole heap of these units and when the iPad 1 made it's way to the market, sales dropped. I know have about 15-20 units sitting around in the garage and a stack of Runcore SSD upgrade parts.

      If Google translate is correct: No idea if you can still buy this HDD for a laptop, though I don't know if any still use this interface for the HDD anymore.

    There was an option 4, of course: Linux. You'd need to install something compact, like Antix or MX Linux perhaps, a 32-bit version. It would get you a modern web browser, at least.

    I loved my Eee PC 701. The 1 GHz Celeron was so much faster than the Intel Atom N270 in the 901 series.

    My one looks like it has a sim card socket.
    Does anyone know anything about using it to make phone calls?

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  ปีที่แล้ว

      No idea, I know a version with a sim card slot was available, but I have never seen one out in the wild. I suppose it treats it like any other 3g data network so maybe you could make calls over that?

    The Asus Eee 901 was much better than the 900!

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never tried a 900, though the hardware looks a little weaker. I'll lookout for one, it would be nice to see it side by side with the 901.

      I recently got an untested Eee 900 from a friend since she found it stocked at her attic for years unfortunately she lost the original AC charger so I have to order one online (still waiting for it to arrive this month). After reading your comment I lose hope I'll be ever turn on, fix it and use it for retro game emulation. Thanks for the insight mate I appreciate it.

    • @JacobGamingStudios
      @JacobGamingStudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JacobJohnson-lh4gx There is still a chance the laptop will work. Just don't use it for too long, the Eee 900 was known for having issues with the chip that supplies power to the motherboard

    • @JacobJohnson-lh4gx

      @@JacobGamingStudios I see must've been nice to experiment and use it for basic coding, and document typing. I got the charging adapter yesterday unfortunately it didn't turn on, no sign of power from the netbook, no LED lights or blank screen. Tried basic troubleshoots but none of them worked besides sending it off to a repair shop for further advance troubleshooting. I wasted money and time thinking it'll work haha. All I have now is a netbook paper weight. Anyway thanks for the reply mate I appreciate the input.
