@@handsonkatie that's a pretty impressive feature all by itself! Is that something the project does all on its own, or it a little help from Katie's engineering?
What an absolutely brilliant idea! I have what was once a top of the line (15 years ago) projector I don't use any more that I was thinking of donating to our makerspace anyway. This is such a fantastic application for it! We were talking about making some tables for crafting anyway, I could see making a nice big one with a white surface to use with the projector, with plenty of room for marking and cutting larger pieces of cloth. I at first thought "oh, if only it was a 4K unit", but then saw that the HD resolution is perfectly fine for what you're showing it used for. Thanks so much for the fantastic tip! (I actually have a set of very heavy-duty legs for a powered table like this too. I was always going to make a custom sit/stand desk for my bedroom/office, but now do all my work in my basement workshops anyway, so I'll donate the motorized legs to the makerspace as well 🙂)
Hey Dave! Oh that sounds an amazing use, it's wonderful to see makerspaces receiving things like this, it could be super helpful! Yes you're right, I actually thought the same about a 4k unit, but I was delighted - I guess I hadn't twigged quite how close the projector is to the surface, so that pixel resolution becomes intensified. 4K projectors seem to still be a big leap to £1k+ at the moment, obviously when they arrive, it'll be even better!
Nice legs! This is a genius idea and I had no idea that they could be easily integrated into Home Assistant. Adding the overhead projector to bring your work directly to the table was superb! I'm a bit concerned that I'd spend a long period staring directly down at the surface and end up with a sore neck, but nothing the odd break or change of focus couldn't help to avoid I guess... the problem will be remembering once I get carried away in my flow at the table.
Thanks Chris - well I must say looking at the table is much more natural than looking up at a monitor, but remember you can easily adjust the table too! I'll keep you posted on long term use!
Hi Katie! How do you manage to keep the grid scaling consistent when the table is at different heights? Doesn't the perspective difference mess with the measurements?
Yes! I actually have just got a set standard height for the measurement (as I couldn't think of a burning reason I'd need to measure at different heights!), but you could solve in two obvious ways. 1) just scale the image according to the height settings you choose or 2) create scaled images for your height settings. It's super quick to do as you can just multiply your grid by the difference in measurement to get the precise amount. So I'll do this if I ever need to! A third way would be to use the projector zoom, but I'd need to test how precise this is - the Flexispot table is extremely precise in it's height settings - which is great!
You are a godsend. I have always wanted to integrate projectors with craft works but never had the space or budget for it. I'm so glad I found your video. Also, how do you properly scale your grid measurements to be accurate? Do you manual adjust the projected image to match your tape/rulers?
Thank you! To answer your question - the tap adjusts to very precise heights, the projector is fitted to the ceiling, so it becomes simple maths. Make a grid in whatever app you want with 10cm measurements, then project, measure with a precise ruler, then multiply by the ratio between the two - eg 10cm actually ended up being 11.45cm, then if you scale your image by 0.873362, then you have a pixel-perfect accuracy. This also means you have a 'grid' on your computer you can use for any other projections that you need to be accurate.
@handsonkatie How are you adapting it to different heights, do you have a set of images with an aligned rule for each height or how are you doing that?
That is a VERY intriguing idea. I love it! Now, I need to find a way to leave at least a post-stamp sized uncluttered area on my desk to display an image from above.
@@handsonkatie Unfortunately, ALL of my horizontal surfaces get magically and instantly completely covered in clutter. All I have to do is blink and they are covered. It's like a Doctor Who episode... Vertical surfaces take a little longer. 😢😢😢
Hey Jon, yes of course, I'll post it onto my site in the next batch of free files - keep an eye out there over the next week or two! It's a very simple bracket, but works perfectly for me!
For a minute, I thought you hijacked an OG Microsoft Surface Table. Those were so cool to play with, but this is far more reasonable than what I recall the Surface Table being.
I had exactly the same thought actually!!! You can get things as messy as you want without ruining a screen! You could even lay out things like icing patterns and correct sizes for doughballs on the surface!!
I love that table, and especially the projected screen! I'm thinking of all sorts of uses that display would have for tabletop wargaming (section off a small area in the corner for your army list, abilities, etc). I would love to know more about what you've found. Does it have a webcam connected to it to read what's on the table? I'd be tempted to make some visible marker it could look for and measure, then scale the display off of that to properly scale the grids. I have so many ideas now, I need to make my own.
Brilliant ideas and this is what I'm musing for my gaming table build. I could use cameras to automatically recognise anything (like the box of the game I'm playing to project the right surface or create play zones as you suggest!!)
@@handsonkatiedeployment zones would be a great tool for gaming. Take it a step further and incorporate a roller to randomize missions, deployment zones, anything else the game system in question uses. I need to do this more and more now...
For your computer desktop, were you using the ironing mat, the rhino mat or something else? And does the mouse move and track well on it? Been looking for a computer desk mat and I wouldn't mind having something doing double or triple duty. Thanks for another great video and lots of ideas.
I've got a rhino mat as the base layer and then I have big silicone mats that are great for anything involving heat, these work brilliantly as mouse mats too!!
Awesome idea with the projector! I'd be too scared mounting a heavy, (slightly) vibrating, and heat producting machine overhead with an FDM part, but then again, I am a chemist without intuition for fatigue and creep. Did you calculate loads and resistance or just over-engineered by feel?
Oh goodness, the 3d print is designed for waaaay more than this would ever need - probably an order of magnitude more than required. Likewise no issue with heat or vibrations as I used the official mounting point (with screw fitting). I wouldn't worry about FDM, it is surprisingly strong for most things!
How do you get those projected images dimentionnaly accurate? Just measuring and resizing the image, adjusting the table height? Or do you have a better trick?
Yes, just a spot of maths. Make a grid of 5cm increments, then project it, measure the actual length and that gives you a ratio, eg 5:5.3, then you multiply your image by this percentage and you'll be bang on. You'll then know what pixel to mm ratio for everything you create (or you can use this file as a template)
Briliant! Quick question: For the grid projections and similar, where you need the projected grid to be dimensionally accurate, do you have to put a scale on the table and adjust the zoom to suit each time or have you come up with something smarter?
No, the Flexispot is really good in this regard as you can save heights really precisely. So I basically just created a grid, projected it and then held a ruler up to this. This gave me the simple maths ratio to adjust my grid size on the PC to be perfectly accurate - so very basically if my 10cm grid was actually 11cm in real life, then I needed to scale down 10% to be spot on! Once this is done, my table and PC grids become permanently aligned and I know that 200px on my PC will always equal 20cm in real life (just making up example numbers for simplicity!)
Ah great point - have added to the description!! Here's the link: mvpplaceholder.com/ It's an early prototype and is being developed every week, so could develop into something pretty cool!
Goodness! Your home is any tech nerd's heaven! I only have one question about the projector: how about the noise? Is it silent enough? I also know for having used them in the past they radiate much heat, so how about the average consumption for daily use? (that's a one-off error indeed.) Other than that a foot pedal for the flexispot would be nice when both hands are busy. I haven't seen any on the interwebs but I only skimmed through...
Yes, the projector really isn't that noisy at all - think they're all pretty good these days. Foot pedal is an interesting idea - this would be easy enough through home assistant
@@nashaut7635 I just got myself a M-vave Chocolate Midi foot stomp controller. Seems like something like that seems like it would be near ideal to control up / down via a guitar effects pedal and select presets via the foot stomp switches.
Add a top down view camera - with OpenCV backend (computer vision) and then you could enable hand tracking/gesture control. Also you could have context sensitive physical objects - either with QR codes on or again computer vision, recognise them and change your virtual workspace depending on the task at hand. Bring in the sewing machine to view for example, and it automatically launches the sewing patterns app workspace ;)
I was going to say I'm looking at IR sensors to do the same until your last sentence.... genius idea for interface shifting!! I might copy that for another project I'm going to use this concept in!! Great thinking!! 🥰🥰
Hi😀 I quite like the idea of the projector with correct scale measurements, but how does it work on all the different table heights, or am I being daft?
I'm a bit sceptical how practical the table-screen is for anything else besides crafting, but in general there were quite some cool ideas in this video.
Oh it's designed for a craft table, so that's how I'll use it, but it's brilliant for just watching videos/TV and more - for the cost, it's super effective!
I love this idea of the desk screen! The link to the project to the projector in your description is not working for me. Could you please check, Katie? Thx.

Before you dropped this video today, I was actually planning out an idea I had of building a top for an E7 table which contained the computer itself inside of it, and in the middle of the table would be a large touchscreen monitor for doing artwork and writing! (As it's adjustable, it doesn't really matter how thick the tabletop is as long as there is space in the centre for my legs if it is going very low) Anyhoo, mindblown, and you're bloody living my dream life! 🤯😂 As a side note, you seem to have so much stuff and built so much, maybe you can tell in a video how you got started with everything? It would be intriguing to know... Especially for people who have very little to start off with and want to get to be in your position. 👍
Hey Simon - I actually did exactly that years and years ago in my first house. It worked nicely, but it's far less flexible than a projector as you say! I'm definitely going to do a 'behind the scenes' background to my making at some point - probably as a Patreon/TH-cam Member video, so that might help explain my madness!
@@handsonkatie I was actually considering not using the monitor directly, but just the digitiser with gorilla glass on top recessed into 24mm veneered Ply for uber stability. It could be better than a projector in certain circumstances, but I can definitely see a projector being much better for projects such as the ones you used as examples like projecting over clothes etc. You've definitely given me food for thought though. 🤔😁 And if I may be so bold in saying, a video of how you started out might be better served for all to see, as people who want inspiration may not be able to fully afford a Patreon/member subscription. But definitely, videos of behind the scenes madness should be that extra member content. 👍😵💫🤓😂 And who knows, maybe the story of how you got started could be a free overview leading to a series on your member section of videos showing the step by step approaches you took. 🤷😁
@@simonspoke Hey Simon - yes that's exactly what I did, you need to be careful though - I think I burnt my monitor out after a year or two as the glass naturally traps heat right near the surface, so it may ultimately lead to damage if facing upwards! There's definitely ways around this (probably a small air gap and some fans blowing across this would fix, but as you say a projector has lots of advantages anyway! Re a 'starting out video' - what I meant was I'd show this first to Patreons and then release more broadly at a later date (I think this is only fair for all the amazing Patreons who have been supporting me on my mad journey learning to make videos and things!)
@@handsonkatie Great advice re. the monitor, I didn't think of heating issues, as I assumed it would be a large enough area for the heat to still dissipate upward with the digitiser contacting the glass directly like a tablet or something. Hmmmmm, have to think about that one... Maybe lots of small thin channels grooved behind the digitiser for air to flow through... Thanks Katie. Although I did wonder, if you wanted to move your table in the future, how much of a hassle is it for you to reposition the projector? And of course if it's first up on patreon and then released later to everyone, yeah, that's great. I thought you were talking about exclusive content that wouldn't be seen in any other way... My bad. I'm loving your "mad" journey though, it's awesome. 😁👍
@@simonspoke yes, I didn't think of that either until too late, so you might as well learn from my silliness!! 😂 Moving the projector is basically two screws - I made a 3d printed mount for it, so they just went into a beam, so I can easily move around if I fancied!
If you attach a camera above the table you could start to benefit from augmented reality where you can combine and interact with physical and virtual things displayed in the same space. Just a thought.
or just project the corners at the yhe size of an A4 sheet, and the camera snapshots that. with a 4k camera you get a decent scanner already. enough to eg. pay some bills that have a barcode. I was planning to do something like that in my office. great video as usual! thanks!
I find it incredible that you find the time to make all this cool stuff while supporting the hobby and making videos. It's a struggle for me, work, life, maintenance, and 100 hobbies. There's not enough caffeine.
I am curious: do you adjust the dimensions of the images sensitive to scale every time you change the height of the desk or do you have a smarter approach? 🙂 Similarly, does the projector require adjusting the lens with every desk adjustment?
Nope, I was super surprised for the price, but this projector auto focuses whenever you move it and adjusts keystone also! Then I can just set the table to the height I want and it'll remember every time
Very cool idea regarding the projector and I love the energy you put on your videos. Do you mind sharing more details about the projector & mounting ? (unless this is going to be a future video?)
Of course, here's the projector: amzn.to/4815O48 And I'll upload the little 3d printed projector mount that I made to my site today/tomorrow so you can see!
Uuuh this would require some coding with image recognition, but I'm picturing a game of Carcassone where once you place your tile it gets displayed and you can toss it away. No more placing a tile and moving the entire board! No more soda spills!
You're absolutely right, it was an odd time where MS were inventing brilliant devices (Surface, Kinect etc) and were somehow screwing them up!! I'm actually musing turning this into a touch table if I think it would be handy!
When I was at Indiana University for grad school back in 2004 there were a bunch of people playing around with similar projection onto table concepts as well. One of the more unique things they were doing at the time was using RFID readers + chips embedded in physical objects to let you place and move around virtual representations of them. (From what I remember they were using multiple readers to triangulate the exact position) Just imagine doing things like gridfinity layout if each object you set down was manufactured with an RFID chip that contained a url pointing to metadata about the product. Think of how cool it would be if that included a 3d model of the object (or at least enough identifying information for you to link up with a community maintained archive of 3d scans).
Exactly what I'm plotting as the next stage - you can get IR bezel scanners pretty easily these days which would let me turn into into a multi touch table, then I could use tags or the like to do some fun things!!

If only there was a way to incorporate touch or RFID to the table top surface to have it recognize gestures or objects to change function or display. I'm sure there is a way. I've wanted to use a projector with a games table for game nights, project a map and effects down on the surface.
Very cool idea! I'm guessing the projected image doesn't fully come into its right in the video, due to ambient lighting and the color grading - but in real life, this could look stunning. An improvement could be to use a black projector screen rather than a traditional white. This comes with a range of benefits, mainly from increased contrast, color depth and better sharpness/definition along with less glares and reflections. The drawback however, is if you have a lot of ambient light due to reduction of overall brightness. A more powerful projector remedies this somewhat, but no matter what, a black screen will always produce darker results than a white, so it's a tradeoff.
Yes, I was annoyed at my lack of video skills in this as the projected image is clear as day in the brightest light, there's absolutely no issue with visibility in any condition. Colours are great too - just doesn't come across in the video as I mentioned. I'm super impressed at how far these projectors have come, it does auto focus, auto keystone adjustment and more - given it's only projecting 1.5m or so, I guess it's not a surprise how bright the image is, but it works super cool! I've also got a range of different colour mats anyway that I use for different projects, so I tested those, but the normal light grey one worked brilliantly!
I would love to see you create a video about your time machine. And don't tell me you don't have one. I'm sure you do. How else can you find the time to do all the cool things you're showing us and still have time to spare to play games.
This is the great thing about this projector - it connects by Wifi 6 to any PC, laptop, mobile or tablet (it also does bluetooth), so I can use any PC I fancy. I just use my PC in the next room and it can duplicate it's screen onto the projector. This means I simply turn the projector on and it'll show whatever is on my screen!
I've updated the description with a link to this surface, I've had it for years, but it's super cool - really tough, self-healing, stain resistant and more, so I use it for pretty much anything!!

Love the ideas for the projector. And just in time for amazon deal days
What if you add a pen mouse?. You could write notes on the table, I also think it would also be easier to play top down strategy games.
Great idea!! I might need to test this!! ☺️
😂😂😂 or make another table like I would??
@@handsonkatie Unfortunately, ALL of my horizontal surfaces get magically and instantly completely covered in clutter. All I have to do is blink and they are covered. It's like a Doctor Who episode... Vertical surfaces take a little longer. 😢😢😢
Hi, Can you upload ceiling mount stl please? Great video as always :) Thanks in advance!
Those always looked so cool, I remember thinking that that was definitely the future. Pretty much still agree for teamwork, except for the definitely.
Brilliant Katie!!!!! I would love to put a projector over a kitchen counter for recipes and laying out prep work. ! Love it
I had exactly the same thought actually!!! You can get things as messy as you want without ruining a screen! You could even lay out things like icing patterns and correct sizes for doughballs on the surface!!
always so creative and inspirational
Very cool ideas here! Thanks for Projecting! 🤣. Love your channel.
Waauw, it’s an amazing idea!! You are an amazingly creative marble 🤩🤩🥰🥰
This is absolutely fantastic.
Just measuring and resizing the image,
adjusting the table height?
@@handsonkatie Excellent! Thank you - I definitely need to set this up. BTW: What cutting resilient surface are you using?
Rhino mats! Link in description!
@@handsonkatie What software are you using for the grids?
Is it a photo? Inside an app?
Great ideas once again :)
Thanks again for another great video.
Can you link to the gridfinity layout design tool that you briefly mentioned? Thanks.
Ah great point - have added to the description!! Here's the link: mvpplaceholder.com/
It's an early prototype and is being developed every week, so could develop into something pretty cool!
Goodness! Your home is any tech nerd's heaven! I only have one question about the projector: how about the noise? Is it silent enough? I also know for having used them in the past they radiate much heat, so how about the average consumption for daily use? (that's a one-off error indeed.)
Other than that a foot pedal for the flexispot would be nice when both hands are busy.
@@timtuckercom Nice 👍
Add a top down view camera - with OpenCV backend (computer vision) and then you could enable hand tracking/gesture control. Also you could have context sensitive physical objects - either with QR codes on or again computer vision, recognise them and change your virtual workspace depending on the task at hand.
Bring in the sewing machine to view for example, and it automatically launches the sewing patterns app workspace ;)
I was going to say I'm looking at IR sensors to do the same until your last sentence.... genius idea for interface shifting!! I might copy that for another project I'm going to use this concept in!! Great thinking!! 🥰🥰
I had no idea that existed!
That is so cool!
Hi😀 I quite like the idea of the projector with correct scale measurements, but how does it work on all the different table heights, or am I being daft?
Yep, you just scale your image by the height of the table!
Thx.
I've updated it, can you check if these work? If not, would be great to know where you're based? (Works fine for me!!)
@@handsonkatie : the US link works for me now - the UK one still not. I am based out of Switzerland (using the German) Amazon store. Thank you, bunches. xxx

Can you list the projector and some of the software your using?
Of course, description updated!: amzn.to/4815O48
Before you dropped this video today, I was actually planning out an idea I had of building a top for an E7 table which contained the computer itself inside of it, and in the middle of the table would be a large touchscreen monitor for doing artwork and writing!
(As it's adjustable, it doesn't really matter how thick the tabletop is as long as there is space in the centre for my legs if it is going very low)
Anyhoo, mindblown, and you're bloody living my dream life! 🤯😂
As a side note, you seem to have so much stuff and built so much, maybe you can tell in a video how you got started with everything?
And if I may be so bold in saying, a video of how you started out might be better served for all to see, as people who want inspiration may not be able to fully afford a Patreon/member subscription.
But definitely, videos of behind the scenes madness should be that extra member content. 👍😵💫🤓😂
And who knows, maybe the story of how you got started could be a free overview leading to a series on your member section of videos showing the step by step approaches you took.
Moving the projector is basically two screws - I made a 3d printed mount for it, so they just went into a beam, so I can easily move around if I fancied!
Any recommendations for a UK supplier of standing desks? Felxispot have sent these to a number of UK based creators but don'
t sell in the UK :-(
Flexispot co uk?
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
If you attach a camera above the table you could start to benefit from augmented reality where you can combine and interact with physical and virtual things displayed in the same space. Just a thought.
...or IR edge sensors.... Already nosing at them!
or just project the corners at the yhe size of an A4 sheet, and the camera snapshots that. with a 4k camera you get a decent scanner already. enough to eg. pay some bills that have a barcode. I was planning to do something like that in my office.

Great idea! Thanks for sharing!

Reminds me of the original Microsoft Surface Table from 2007-ish. Something way ahead of its time
You're absolutely right, it was an odd time where MS were inventing brilliant devices (Surface, Kinect etc) and were somehow screwing them up!!
(From what I remember they were using multiple readers to triangulate the exact position)
Just imagine doing things like gridfinity layout if each object you set down was manufactured with an RFID chip that contained a url pointing to metadata about the product.

Great idea and super easy, I'd just use Home Assistant to power all the RFID tags, might pinch that idea!!

He's a legend!!! @DIYPerks
I'm disappointed that the projector doesn't seem to be using Underware on the ceiling.
Oh don't worry, I'd just done it - my Underware looks wonderful on the ceiling.... and watch this space for more soon!
Oof, you forgot to use capton tape in your intro for your heat gun. Did that project work out?
Yes, it worked out fine! I was bodging it a bit (I'm a sloppy engineer and I'd run out of Kapton!! 😂😂)
Heheh! I've actually got a draft of a video about that - I'll cover it at some point, hyper-automation is the key....!
‘Guess what you are looking at it.’ We certainly are.
Can you explain how you set up the computer and projector? Where is the laptop you are connecting to?
This is the great thing about this projector - it connects by Wifi 6 to any PC, laptop, mobile or tablet (it also does bluetooth), so I can use any PC I fancy. I just use my PC in the next room and it can duplicate it's screen onto the projector. This means I simply turn the projector on and it'll show whatever is on my screen!
4:02 - you mention a perfectly sized healing top - it looks like you’re cutting and pressing all on one surface? What is this magic??
I've updated the description with a link to this surface, I've had it for years, but it's super cool - really tough, self-healing, stain resistant and more, so I use it for pretty much anything!!
