This video is so extensive, from the build itself, to the organization before the video, to the filming, and then all of the editing. This seems like a lifetime's worth of work compressed into a single ~20 minute video and you published it within two weeks of your last upload. There is just so much deep, considerate thought, planning, hard work, and extreme attention to detail from functionality to aesthetics at every level. My mind is blown and I am at a loss for words, but I guess all I can say is you have done such a phenomenal job and I hope that others can appreciate all of your hard work. Thanks for sharing your latest project!
Ať this stage I don't believe this is really an amateur channel. But even if it's some media project and Katie is it's face, I still think this is great channel, very pro social and positive, thanks to it's orientation to practical DIY and Open Source. 👏👍
@@handsonkatieCan’t wait! I’ll probably still be trying to figure out what to do with the crazy assortment of metric nuts and bolts I’ve accumulated. M2 to M8 in button, socket, countersunk heads, regular and nylock nuts, silver and black. They’re currently in their original containers/organizers, all stacked up which is suboptimal because they’re labeled on their tops. And typing that makes me realize I’ve overlooked an obviously easy fix…labels on the sides. 🤦♂️ They’ll still be in stacks of boxes but at least I won’t have to rifle through them. Thanks for being my rubber duck! 😂
@@handsonkatie I had the exact same thought! And this is like, the only video with general advice for designing a system, as opposed to just printing it installing it ☺️ thank you!!
As a dude who ran across this and enjoys 3D printing, vinyl and attempting to be organized, the thing that got me the most was the explanation on HOW to organize. I'm sure I've heard it before, but the visualizer in me really brought home in this video. As stated in here, many great points of "early web 2.0". I'm guilty of printing this wall in multiple colors. Of course now reprinting in a more toned down white.. and with more of the suggestions made here. However, rethinking how to organize based on project or what I want makes a lot more sense. My office space then to my work area. It was like a wrinkle in my monkey brain grew. Put what you use all the time near you, then things you use less, put them further away and eventually in drawers or cabbies. I drooled when I saw the entire tour of her craft room, and I would 1000% pay for an organization/print project of my life like this, but as stated, I have all the tools. Multiple 3D printers, filament, time, label makers, vinyl cutters, printers, weeding, cutting, glue guns, soldering irons. Problem is, I never can find any of it, when a project comes up so I end up getting frustrated, the project gets stalled, or I buy more or more, or get so mad I just throw that project in the dungeon and go find something else to do. Thank the TH-cam algo for running this video across my screen and giving me the push to get some things printed at least around my 3D printers to get that area cleaned up and hopefully spread to other work areas like the office and kitchen.. By the way, It would be super cool if you could drop a 3D Scan of your craft room on Scanniverse for us to explore!
What an interesting comment!! Great to hear it's helped give you the nudge and it's so true, I could do a video on that in future. People forget that creative projects are fuelled by energy and if it's getting sapped by lost tools or mess, then they're very hard to complete!!
Hallelujah, TH-cam finally recommended the perfect channel for me! Software engineer by day, I 3D print, sew (taught myself while sitting at home during pandemic), tinker with electronics, and use my basic woodworking skills to occasionally add to the cat walls. Oh and I’m currently tackling craft room and 3D printing room organization (though I do have 40’ of RepRack filament storage up and already overflowing) so TH-cam dropped you into my feed at the perfect time!
@@go-healthy8132 G&T's all round then - it's turning into a party of long lost twins!! On a serious note, drop me a message on my site and I'll ping you a link to my discord channel if you want to have a chat space - I'm gathering a little gang of like-minded mad people to brainstorm more craziness!
Like Paul Mentioned, I would suggest a Bambu Lab product as they're the most, "appliance" like printer so you can focus more on printing and less on tinkering with the machine itself.
Fantastic! Probably the best video i’ve ever seen that shows how to organize with a 3d printer. Can you show how you organize your 3d printing room next?
I'm super excited about your channel. I'm old (73) and forgetful, so your organizational series videos are on my must-watch list. My challenge is convincing my darling wife of 50 years that I need a 3D printer. I daren't show her these vids because she'll think I'm only in it to watch a pretty & very intelligent young lady. Cheers from Australia 👍🇦🇺👍
Your videos stand out so refreshingly from the crowd of tech channels! Your beautiful language (for me as non native English speaker), your sparkling enthusiasm, your expertise and your subtle play with your sexiness is fantastic!
This is brilliant. I recently bought a 3D printer (yet another hobby in my play room) and have been getting really frustrated with everything being such a mess. I’m going to print off some of these items to get me sorted. Thank you for this very valuable video!
I usually don’t comment this much but this is by far the best video about 3d printers and organising I have ever seen. Really well made video. Thank you.
Had headaches over which system i should commit to. Thanks to you I know, that I can actually make the best of both Multiboard AND Gridfinity! Much love and best luck for your channel 💕
It looks wonderful and has inspired me to take action. Printing one 3x3 Multiboard square takes 4-5 hours. I need about 30 of them, which is approximately 150 hours of continuous work for my 3D printer. Printing small containers, about 3 at a time, again takes 4-5 hours. I need around 50 containers = 100 hours. In addition, about 20 hours are needed to print the connectors. Altogether, it's about 270 hours - more than 10 days of non-stop printing
Love the maths !! Yes on my Bambu printers it takes about 3 and a half hours for a 9x9 Grid - assume you're on an older generation printer? (Eg Ender) But it's not like you need to do anything during prints, so you can just leave it to plod along!!
Thanks Katy. I've been looking at gridfinity but was a bit overwhelmed at the choice. Thanks for putting it all together as a cohesive whole. Now all I have to do is hope I can get the workshop done, before my wife spots the sewing room bits 😂
BRILLIANT VIDEO! I've been considering for a bunch of months to start using Gridfinity, your approach is similar to what I had in mind but was scared to commit to; monocolour, simple, combined with multiboard. What stopped me from starting out was the huge number of options, files and posibilities. The Neogrid addition is fantastic. Now that I watched your video I'm confident to start using this system. I look foward to see what you are up to next!
Thank you and glad you found it helpful - you're spot on, just start really simple and keep your components to a minimum as I covered and you'll be fine (this means if you get anything wrong, you can just move bits around or use them for a different part of your house!)
Great video. Takes Adam Savage single point of retrievability to a new level. Do you have oldschool pegboard behind the multiboard? Confused by the holes.
🤣🤣🤣 yes spot on! I was being a little lazy, but it does no harm!! That was the 1.0 effort from a few years ago - peg board had too many limitations unfortunately!
Hello beautiful, a pleasure to see you and to be able to see your videos, darling, very good and instructive, you are very beautiful, best regards, heart 😘😍😍
Katie, that was a great video! I just learned about multiboard, which can be overwhelming. I was just looking at storage solutions for a basement shop I am setting up, and you inspired me to focus on the multiboard, gridfinity solutions. Thank YOU!
Your 3d printer journey nearly mirrors my own :) Started with a Creality Ender 3 Pro to learn the hobby, and while it as a valuable learning experience, I got fed up with the struggle that comes from using a cheaper device. Upgraded to a Prusa Mk3 and realized how much smoother and better 3d printing can be, and then recently I got a Bambu Labs X1 Carbon after seeing all the new tech that came in it, and was once again blown away by how mainstream this printer brings 3d printing. The journey has been amazing!
Exactly the same - such a lot of progress in so little time! You can see how robust the Bambu range are in my latest video, they don't even care which way up the whole printer is!! (I actually printed a whole benchy completely upside down!)
I love this! I’m a fellow woman in tech and your video is fun and entertaining as well as super informative. I was torn between skadis and honeycomb for walls but you’ve convinced me on multiboard. I don’t think I’ve ever subbed to someone after only watching one of their videos before 🎉. … and I think I’m about to get a 3D printer 😅
Great to hear you enjoyed my madness!!! 😂😂😂 And check links in description for printers (there's a killer annual sale on Bambu for the next few days which they only do once a year!!)
I just finally setup my 3d printer that I got almost a year ago. Your video has me SO HYPED to get started printing and organizing!! Thank you for this video! Looking forward to diving into your other content, as I’m def a new fan and subscriber!
Most training covers 5S. If you're thorough, there's 6S. Katie has the appeal of 7S! Brilliant Design for Speedy workflows through Modularity. Amazing!!!
I can't wait to see your organization with your workshop. I find it easier to organize my craft area but I am overwhelmed as I build my woodshop and fabrication tools. I use some tools for both and I have no clue how to organize my large toolboxes. 3D printed videos has been so dominated by men and seeing your video has such a different of organizing which I appreciate. Although, i love led lighting I'm not looking my organization scheme to look like I"m in a game scene. Your practicality is great, and your humor that comes with it is so clever.
Thank you! Workshop video coming up! Well wait and see if I can convince you on the LEDs - there's no ordinary LEDs going into my workshop - what if they could save your life.....!! ;)
This is so inspiring! Thank you very much! I already made myself a wall of Ikea sockerbit boxes because I thought it would help me organise my stuff. And for a while it actually did help but now I came to the point that I can't find in which of all those boxes I put my stuff. Although I did put labels on all of them, I didn't think of developing some kind of system. "That will manage itself over time," I thought... Well..... no. It doesn't manage itself over time 😂 I have been thinking of getting a 3D printer, so the biggest next question is: what are the important things to look for when buying a 3D printer?
😂😂😂 It's like you an me are living the same life! I had almost exactly the same conversation! With regards to 3D Printer, it's really not too hard at the moment, I'd highly recommend Bambu Lab's range - I've got links on my site as I get asked this quite a lot: handsonkatie.com/recommended-products/ There's three currently at different price points, but they're all really nice and plug and play - I'd probably actually recommend starting with the A1 or the P1s (ie cheaper ones) as they're likely more than you'll ever need! Do just email me if you need any help/tips and you're welcome to join my discord too - more than happy to answer any silly questions and it'll change your organising life!
@@handsonkatie😂😂😂 well, in terms of organising, you are way ahead of me but the things you tell in your videos absolutely sound familiar 😂 I took a quick look at your recommendations. You list looks pretty much like my personal wish list. Unfortunately it's time for a little nap but I'll have a better look at your list (and the rest of your website 😄) later this week. I'll send you an email too 😄
this is so awesome, I started printing already. I am about to move and want to make a craft room like yours! I want to see the kitchen next or the workshop, but mostly the kitchen, mine is a mess
Thanks for the multi board tip off. We are building walls for new home currently and I’m glad to be ply-backing all our plasterboard with a view to doing something like this. Screw anywhere - perfect.
Seriously, you won't believe how handy they are - I use them all over the place!! Check my site for downloads and let me know if any extra sizes handy!! 😊😊
Yes!!! We've been waiting *ages* to see your underware! :D This is one of the most brilliant ideas I've seen in a while and a real world example really helps show off how innovative it is! Any thoughts on how much weight multiboard could reasonably handle, hooks vs shelves, etc.? I'm looking forward to the rest of this series as you show us your ideas for mounting heavier items to walls
Hey Chris, thank you!! I've got a whole range, I couldn't fit everything in this, so you'll see more of my underware in future.... 🤣🤣 Lots of corner pieces multi channel pieces etc. Multiboard will hold about 20kg, so masses more than you'd ever need I'd say, it's very rigid so a great choice for this sort of thing!
@@handsonkatie Makes sense! I guess the issue will be more for those of us who like to let our junk hang out rather than just straight up or down? Extending on the Y-axis is going to turn shelves into bigger levers. Bin stacking could be an issue too... But that said 20kg is probably enough for most. Probably also depends on your preferences for bondage and orientation? Parts will tend to split through the layer lines so how you position the part for slicing will have an influence. Final point, I assume you used PLA? Or maybe you're more of an ABS / ASA lass? Could be a future video in there just on material and printing setup...
Your organizational philosophy is inline with my experience over the years. It's refreshing to hear people speak about the "meta" of organization. Not enough people do it. Here's some of my thoughts. 1. Gridfinity for interior horizontal drawers. I love it. I'm all in. (I'm actually printing some bins as we speak). The webtool by perplexing labs was the catalyst for dropping the activation energy to actually start printing bins. 2. For wall storage, Multiboard. I'm not "all in", just due to fact that it multiplies the surface area for dust to settle on overtime. I don't have a proper solution for it. Just my initial gut feeling on the matter. I'm personally avoiding this, even though its GREAT for the problem it solves. 3. This is related in your other video for vertical surfaces. You mentioned using French cleats. I think the specification can be much tighter. What about a standard that is DIN rail compatible, but can still be manufactured with woodworking tools. If the loads are low, you can use wood for the aesthetic/cost. If loads are high, switch to OTS metal DIN rail. 4.For VERY high loads, 40lbs+ on a wall. I've a great luck just using UniStrut rail. It's standardized. It's far more industrial, but fits well in industrial spaces. I've 3D printed adapters, that key into the rail to hold my lawn equipment discreetly. It's basically a standardized version of the organization rails sold by Husky,Gladiator, etc. Keep up the great work
Wonderful comment! Love your structured thinking. To your points - 2: yes that's a potential - although same applies to pegboard, cleats, and any other surface beyond a flat surface! You could naturally build sliding doors, tambour doors or the like to tackle this, but ultimately this will happen regardless. One big advantage I can see is I can take everything off the wall in minutes and literally hoover the wall if I did have this challenge! My solution actually is just prevention over cure - ie robot vacuums are great for constantly removing any dust and as you'll know, I've got air sensors that trigger them at the slightest hint of dust.... ;) 3. French cleats - yes you're totally right and this is something I'll tackle in my workshop rebuild/tour videos (where cleats will be far more common as so much more heavy items!) - there is a lack of standards in this space and it's all been a bit 'casual' - so definitely looking to test and settle on the best standard. DIN rails is a brilliant thought - what I'll probably do is gather all the common standards that I 'might' use and put them all into a spreadsheet and work out the best possible balance/compromise dimensions between them all - then build 3d printed converters to tackle any outliers....! 3. Unistrut rails - this is awesome, great idea - multiboard actually works to 20kg (indeed with the extreme load approach, works to up to 100kgs in its testing, which is bonkers) - but I am always reassured by a touch of metal. Unistrut is a great solution as the shape allows quite a lot of flexibility as you describe - I could create 3d printed bearing holders to act as almost pseudo linear rails for really easy/smooth movement too.... hmmm... I'll have a muse on this, I can create the 'RachetWerks System' to add to my collection.....! Thanks again for the interesting thoughts! Not sure if you're on my discord, but if interested, email me on my site (handsonkatie.com) and I'll ping you an invite link - keen to gather brains for storming challenges like this!
@@handsonkatie I appreciate the in-depth reply. I just put a submission on your website with my information. I'd be happy to contribute to iron out the details of what we talked about.
This is the ultimate video for getting started with 3D printing organization. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS. I'm going to use your suggestions to start organizing drawers. THANK YOU
Great tips! It's amazing how you simplified the usage of multiboard, and I really like the idea of combining the multiconnector with Gridfinity on top! Following it I'm setting up my first multiboard + Gridfinity setup, and I have a quick question: What screw size (length/head) do you recommend for mounting the multiboard on the wall? Thanks a lot for sharing your work :)
Thanks! Regarding screw length, it obviously depends a bit what you're mounting into. I've got with 25mm screws in most places (enough to get through the plasterboard and fix to a joist). On things like my Underware video where I was mounting directly to wood, I used 12mm screws. Hope this helps!
Great video. I’ve been wanting to use my Bambu P1S for more practical prints instead of just trinkets and this seems like a great project to start with, thanks!
Love this video❤️❤️❤️ How do you attach the vinyl labels on your vinyl and what does the Y and the C stand for in the upper right hand corner of the label? Haven’t got a 3D printer yet, but one is coming up very soon and it will be very busy😂
Hey Lisa, I actually used hair bobbles!!! (But elastic bands would be great too!). You're very eagle-eyed!! The Y and the C are little codes to remind me of different types of vinyl. Y means it needs the design inverted and C means it's a cold press vinyl!
@ Thanks so much . I am just now watching a number of your other videos. I shared one of them with my husband (the one with the overhead projector) and we both think you are brilliant.🥰👏👍
@lisaschmidt8531 Glad you enjoy them and do feel free to email if there's anything you see that you'd like to pinch, I upload any 3d models on my site that people ask for, so you might need a list for that new 3d printer..... ! 🤣☺️
This is one of the most informative videos I’ve seen of someone using 3D printing to organize things in the home, and we all have a lot of things to organize! You got a like and subscribe right away!
ohhhhhhhhhh you've convinced me on your argument for printing everything in white, even if I do miss those early days of the web. I'll still keep some legacy coloured bins but taking the colour decision out of things might also decrease the required activation energy required to get to printing. Did you use PLA or PETG for all your stuff? I've been trying PETG because of the better layer adhesion but my X1C isn't as reliable when printing with it. I'm also loving the intersection of crafts you've shown in this video alone and am looking forward to seeing more of your maker rooms! My poor husband currently puts up with piles of my stuff all over the place. As we speak the dining table is covered with LED strip, random steel washers and JST cables, while the lounge room table is piled high papercrafts on my cutting mat and the front door to our house is boxed in with power tools and partially cut up PVC piping. And none of that is in the supposedly designated "craft room" - which suffers deeply from being on the opposite side of the house to the garage. Seeing your awesome omnimaker skills and organisation gives me hope that I can some day tame this mess!
😂😂😂 sounds like an awesome house, the boundaries of your 'craft room' should be flexible and occasionally take over!! 😂😂 I printed everything in PLA, on an X1C you should have no problem at all with layer adhesion on PLA!
@@handsonkatie Awesome, thanks for your reply! I have been loving the strength of PETG but printing PLA is usually so easy (touchwood). How many kilos of filament did you go through? One reason I've been trying to get into gridfinity is that acceptance that things will move around during the making process; I think I need better incentives to reset the state and ways to pack up on-hold projects without forgetting about them and moving onto the next thing!
WOW! I really like this format! I have a serious issue about clutter but I wasn't able to resolve it with multiboard or 3d printed organizing system because I am missing a planning. Your video is covering all of this and it is really useful. Keep it up! P.S. my wife would like to see videos about your sewing :)
That was an EPIC video! So many creative and genius Ideas! I'm coming back to this video when I get home...I cant wait for the Underware!...I've been looking for something just like that!
I'm brainstorming ideas with my patreons at the moment (ie all the parts they might need) and then I'm modelling them all next week, so probably next couple of weeks for the first release!
Hooks now available on my site: handsonkatie.com/product/set-of-hooks-for-multiboard-multiple-sizes/ Enjoy! Underware is being tested by my Patreon gang - probably aim for first release end of this week!
Oh my word this is amazing, just got myself a 3D printer bambu labs A1 mini, and I've been looking for ways in which I can improve my organisation and reduce my clutter, I spent most this week printing stackable shelves. I love this idea for organising drawers, I do like the wall mounts too, but why but why but my walls are masonry, cinder block, which are nightmare drill through and create so much dust! :( It is really good to have one unified system, otherwise you're trying to make different systems fit together and they don't, so I love this grid affinity approach, please excuse some of the wording, I used speech to text, as I have low vision, and it doesn't get it right all the time 😢
Ooh welcome to the club then my little convert!! 😂 Yes, for a brick/cinder wall, I'd maybe think about just mounting some plywood sheets (allows you to just screw in a few places to the wall, then easy peasy to screw multiboard or whatever into the wood)! Good luck printing!
Thanks for the video, very interesting. I am actually printing the multiboard with bottles pet filament and will thake some ideas from you. Thanks for your video. Cheers from Spain.
Hi Zoe! Drop me an email on my site and I'll send you them! ☺️ (I designed them!) I just need to double check which ones you mean and I can upload to my site too!
Just one thing... You've got a notebook marked "Secret Plans" in plain sight... For gridfinity, I downloaded the "Gridfinity master collection" off Printables. I'll have to check out the generators as well - good shout! I'm guessing you use the Creality big printer for the gridfinity base grids? The maximum grid size I can fit on the plate of my Bambu P1S is 5x5. I used the Dovetail grid bases, but I seem to need a bit of post-print fiddling to get the dovetails to fit... I don't know if I'll need Neogrid for my stuff, but I can definitely see use cases for Multiboard PS I love your presenting style! You're very funny and engaging 😃
Hmmm.... you've got a point there....! I'll need to create a secret box for the secret plans.....! Spot on for the Creality - it can churn out 10x10 grids which is awesome!
@@handsonkatie Nice! Well, I fiddled about with the dovetail bases for gridfinity, and the dovetails themselves, and they seem to be a bit of a bust for me - no matter what I tried, I couldn't get the dovetails to fit into their spots to join the 2 parts together. I guess that either the table the printer is sitting on is too shaky for fine tolerances, the tolerances are too fine for 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm layer height, or there's just too much slop or deformation of the layers for it to fit right? Since the drawer I'm putting the gridfinity system into is metal 🤟, I'm trying out the minimal magnetised base next...
I do workshop organization for fabrication spaces but I like the analogy of files and folders, I'm going to borrow that. Im my wporld there is less "modularity" because walls need to be smooth for cleaning, I am a fan of Wall Control though, too bad their system is patented and not open source. Also, because Katie's craft room looks like an attic and presumably the rest of her house is down a flight of stairs, I think she overlooks the utility of rolling carts- rolling carts and machine bases allow spaces to be reconfigured or tools and materials to be colocated within task areas. Electrical and air drop reels allow things to be moved about while keeping the floor clear of air lines or electrical cords.
Great points and obviously you're right, there's very little appropriate use cases for rolling carts in this small room up some stairs, but they're pretty much the standard in my workshop as they sound like they are to you. This modularity of units is really valuable to allow re-jigging of the whole work layout depending on the project! I'll cover this in a future video!
Your logical approach means that I knew before I even clicked on this video that you would have printed everything in white (unlike almost every other builder who seems to prefer causing cognitive overload)
Nice, like the big hooks and the underware, multiboard has just done their own multiconnect to which the added bins, drawers that are easy to label (doing mine in 3d print). I have 40 times the stuff that you do, so i will never have mine so neat, but i'm trying.
Thanks, yes I saw multiboard's latest batch of changes/files, although I think the site is still in a bit of a muddle as they haven't uploaded things yet/documentation missing. However, I'm not wholly convinced I'll adopt much of it - as you can see from my videos, I lean strongly towards engineering principles, so less is more - so I certainly try to create properly modular and simple reusable components whereever possible!
Oh absolutely not - I think I'd be dead before that happens (constant 60C+ for any sort of effects to be felt!) - had stuff actually on radiators in other rooms for years without any sagging or issues!
Hey Katie, oh I really enjoy your videos and advices that you give to the community. And also there is your fantastic humor! 😀 For my part, I cannot imagine printing so much stuff for my organization purposes right now since I only have one really small Ender 2 Pro and not the space (and maybe money) to invest in more printers. But I am really looking forward to seeing more of your videos here on youtube. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks! 😊 Oh yes, part of the secret of this is you don't need to start big (indeed I certainly wouldn't advise it) - start with that messy drawer you've got, just print a grid and start organising. If you stick to the principles, those boxes will never be wasted, even if you change their contents as you go forward...!
Great info! I need to organize our crafting spaces and this will help justify the 3d printer I got last summer. Plus allow me to make room for another printer!
I got a 3D printer like you said. Waiting on my pink TPU for Barbie accesories for my girls. Stacked multiboard 9x9x9 is up next. Thanks for the inspiration. My "little shopping list" Bambu Lab P1S Combo with AMS and extras: 0.6mm hardened complete hotend and extruder gears, smooth and high temp/engineering plates, glue stick and nozzle wipers. Bambu PLA: 2x white matte and 2 x dual colour silk for my princesses. 1 x Bambu grey ASA and PETG. 2 x Sunlu PLA+ grey and some rechargeable colour change dessicant and lastly 100 5x2 neodynium magnets.
Awesome list Chris only thing I'd consider is actually going cheaper on the PLA - look at brands like elegoo on Amazon or on their site. I bought for £8.50 per kg a few weeks ago, so less than half of Bambu's...and honestly, I couldn't tell the difference - as you know I've printed a lot too, so any issues, I'd know about it. That should save you a few hundred... 😊
@@handsonkatie Thanks for the tip Katie. I bought the Bambu filament for convenience before I learn how to properly calibrate and make profiles for other cheaper filament. Elegoo shop ships from Germany, I live in Switzerland so no VAT for me. That is £7.30 per kilo for 10 kilos shipped.
@@chrislambe400 bargain! So make sure you update your slicer settings with the actual filament cost (think default is 25-30 euros!) it'll give you a real sense of how cheap some of these prints can be Vs the commercial alternatives!
What a great channel I've come across. A marker of many talents. This is gonna be so handy while i do up my home. What sort of material are you using to print?
Thank you! 😊 Almost entirely PLA as it's super cost effective and robust. Occasionally I'll print petg when I need something with more impact strength (and bend) and TPU when I need something flexible!
Thanks for this - I ejoyed it a lot. Like others have mentioned, I'd have loved to see where your 3D printer is situated and how filaments and spare parts are arranged :)
You use the singular for 3D printer.... you underestimate me.... 🤣 Yes, I'm planning one to show all of this - it's a bit spread around different rooms as I have 3D printers in more than one spot, but I'll cover in upcoming videos some neat solutions!
I will be getting a new kitchen in our currently building extension, it's a huge space with mostly drawer units and no wall cupboards so the drawers will need lots of organizing. I also have a big office to take 5 PC setups, server cabinets, a table for my daughter's crafts stuff and that will double up as a D&D table. The other space to organize will be the utility room which is being repurposed as a larder and store for cleaning stuff.
Sounds like an awesome challenge! I've got a study/pc room rebuild on the list and a gaming table is something I've been itching to do, so I might need to do that too! 😁
With Multiconnect when I go to print it they have about 10 different files/options. Which one did you use? Do you use different types for different situations? Great video.
Superb Video and wish I could give it a double thumbs up. I am going to take you up on the timestamp identification... At 1:42 there are a wonderful pair of headphone holders. Can you please point me to the model you used
There is something to be said for bespoke slot storage. Sure you lose a lot, but you gain the adage "a place for everything and everything in its place". I find with bespoke spots for things, then I know when something is missing, and know instantly where things go when they need to be put away. For some of us, organization and clean up in general is a struggle. If I'm faced with generic flat surfaces and bins, things get messy every time. With bespoke spots though, there is no problem in my brain. I know exactly where it goes. The trick that I always struggle with is finding the balance between the two. Bespoke containers on a flexible grid let me move that thing around, but it still only holds that thing.
You're spot on too (you been reading my brainstorming notes for future videos???) - people mistake that 'tidying' is about making things neat, it's about efficiency and reducing cognitive load. If you know where everything is and belongs you'll a) find it (making projects much easier) and b) you'll put it back - which starts the loop!
This was an awesome video. I heard about gridfinity awhile ago but this is the first video that showed a practical use of it (for me). Insta subscribe!
Fantastic video! I'm currently in process of doing similar organization at home so I will defensively check out some of the suggestions here, esp the "underware" :D
Glad you enjoyed - I've got a whole range of underware, so I'll do a video dedicated to this. Let me know if you have any particular under desk requirements or mess and I can custom design something!!

I know that is quite broad tho :) What I have done currently is to make some very basic (3d printed) mounting brackets for some of my smaller computers (such as Mac Mini) so I can stick them under the table. This is great as it just removes a whole chunk of cables that has to go up to the table, but having these inside the grid would be even better as then it would be possible to re-locate them if the need arises.
You've managed to combine Bowie (5:28) and "magic" (5:40) yet again, Katie. 😄 Great job of turning a 'labyrinth' of a hobby room into a well-organised maker space . Cheers 🥂🍻 to another fun, inspiring video from the 'babe' with the-3D printing-powers. 😉 ✨ 🎶
Wow, what a hit for you. Nice job on this video. You feel just a tiny bit robotic, blink a few more times or just soften your eyes a bit. Totally subscribing can't wait for your next one.
I've had wall mounted stuff like this for years and never suffered from that, although that's probably more due to the diligence of my robot vacuums than me.... 🤣🤣🤣. Another advantage is it's super easy to clean, you could just take the pieces off in seconds and literally vacuum the wall if you wanted!
Well I admit it's quicker with several printers.... ;) I just printed over a few weeks basically - print costs were pretty low (saw a great deal on filament for £7 a kg) - so buy bulk and just take your time I'd say! All the way through I was sense-checking and significantly cheaper than the usual commercial boxes and solutions!
This is great, you've showed me something else that I didn't realise I needed. Ignoring the cost of a 3D printer for a moment (tough though that is), how much does it cost to produce a typical component as described in your video and how long does a typical component take to print? I suppose that cost and time is a function of the choice of printer but I really have no feeling for this at the moment. Making your designs free is very welcome and much appreciated. Are you unique in doing this or do most people publish their designs freely too?
Hey Ian, 😄. Funny you say that, I almost included a quick section on the cost of each component to give examples, short answer is they're very cheap. Pennies for most things - the big hooks are probably about 20p, but I can cover in more detail in future if that helps! There's lots of free models, lots of people charge, but I'm a big fan of open source thinking!
@@handsonkatie Thanks Katie. A different question now : how come you have so many 3D printers ? I can understand why you may wish to upgrade as your skills and ideas flourish - but why duplicates, are you running them commercially or is it a matter of home productivity improvement or something else? With a Bambu at over £1K a time, it all adds up!
@@ianbeck5897 hey, Prusa was my first and I built it from scratch. Then a bought a CR10 Max, mainly for the massive bed size, so if I'm printing large Gridfinity grids I can do 10x10 grids on that, so size is handy. Then I got the Bambu P1S and was blown away by how much faster it was.... It was only about £450, so I bought another two. They really do pay for themselves incredibly quickly - just have a look at all the little things you buy from B&Q, Screwfix, and so on. I just lost two camera lens covers, look them up and the cheapest was £5, looked on printables and there was a free print available, with much better features (eg double sided) and it cost 12p each to print.... So I now have five! Add all these sorts of things up and you'll be surprised...!
Another great video! I'm just starting my 3D printer journey, in large part, due to your last three videos. Is there a particular filament you'd recommend for the multiboard? Is PLA strong enough, or would something else be more suitable? Thanks.
I was just chatting with my Patreon's this morning on discord on the exact same topic - no is the short answer, in fact I'd recommend to not worry (people seem to spend £25-30 a reel, I use Elegoo PLA as it's £8.50 a reel... and I've printed hundreds of models as you can see without a single problem!). PLA is more than strong enough - think around 20KG, so way beyond anything you can throw at it! PETG would likely be slightly stronger if you really wanted and remember a lot of the 'strength' can be tweaked by your slicer settings - eg number of outer wall layers, infill density etc)
Hi Katie. Thanks for this video, there is some great ideas in it. In the video at 2:40 a USB hub with multiple ports is visible on your desk. Can you please share the make and model of it?
Hi Katie, I love your channel! I've gone down the rabbit hole of Multiboard and Multiconnect, but I'm having issues implementing Multiconnect into my models. Do you have any resources explaining how to create the files? I'm okay with Fusion 360 but have difficulty merging the two files.
Hey!! Yes, drop me an email and I can introduce you to the developer on my discord channel (plus loads of other cool parametric generators for this that will make it super easy!!)
Katie enjoying your videos. Looking for my first 3D printer. Was looking at the Creality Ender series but you obviously like the ones you mentioned. What would you recommend as a first 3D printer. Probably going to do some organizational stuff and home automation stuff as well. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks! 😊 Yes Bambu have taken the scene by storm since last year - check out the A1 and A1 mini, very cost effective and excellent printers. Enders have been a little famous for the amount of 'tinkering' you need to do to keep them running, so would check the reviews carefully!
Bambu A1, a sale starts today, actually. Use OrcaSlicer instead of Bambu Slicer (it's the same but community upgraded). Sunlu filament, Polymaker PRO filament, or Inland filament
@@handsonkatie Thanks for the info and the recommendation and @davidcheek8892 thanks for the heads up on the sale. Ordered an A1 and looking forward to jumping into the world of 3d printing.
I love everything in this video! Could you explain what you use to label your vinyl? It was a little difficult to see I the video. Is it an elastic band with a label clipped on?
Hey Jenny! Thank you, that's lovely of you to say. Yes, it was actually a little 3d printed label holder than I designed, so they cost about 8 pence per label to print and then I actually used a hair bobble to hold the vinyl (elastic band would work great too!). If you've got access to a 3d printer, I'd be happy to share the file if that helps!
@@handsonkatie I was just gifted a Cricut Explore Air today and am now re-watching this amazingly organized video / crafts room to see how you organized your vinyl. :D Would you be able to share those labels as well as the vinyl holders themselves? My girlfriend and I just moved in together and I finally have a dedicated office, so I'm already working on printing multiboard grids to extend across my entire new office wall! Thanks so much for your incredible brain and for sharing it via your videos!!!
@@DoctorDDub hey, yes of course - think they're on my site already! Let me know if you need a link and hope you and your girlfriend enjoy the shared space together!! ❤️❤️
@@handsonkatieMy husband just got a new 3D printer and I’m determined to learn how to use it. I’d love to add the file for these to my growing list of things to make!
at 0:12 you have a quick view of a claw hammer holder. Looks neat. I've been using pairs of the multiboard pegs but these look better. Is this a found design or custom? Also, do you screw directly to the wall or use the offset connectors and screws? Thanks!!!!
Hey, yes that was a design I custom made to hold hammers, mallets and other things - happy to upload to my site if you'd like to pinch!? I just screw multiboard directly to the wall, offset connectors and the rest are a bit over-engineered IMO!
@@handsonkatie Thanks. I'd love to steal that design - no sense in doing work twice. Just finished mounting my multiword directly to my office wall. No I wan't to take the shop board down and make it a direct attach instead of offset. Just much more solid. Thanks again for all the great work you do!
Thank you, what a lovely comment. That meant a lot!! 🥰🥰
This comment is a great summary of how I feel. This was such a great video to help me wrap my head around organization. Thank you!
The mic and audio could be improved. I hear a tinge of echo.

@@handsonkatieCan’t wait! I’ll probably still be trying to figure out what to do with the crazy assortment of metric nuts and bolts I’ve accumulated. M2 to M8 in button, socket, countersunk heads, regular and nylock nuts, silver and black. @@ring_raitch Oh you better keep watching then..... I've barely begun....! ;)
Honey, is that you?
Either you're my husband or I just found my husband's Hobby Soulmate.
Love it! Bringing Bros together across the ether!!! 🤣

Thank you, that's a lovely comment 🥰 you might be saying in jest, but yes it's coming up - along with my kitchen, workshop, dressing room and more!

I need to spend a weekend printing some gridfinity organizers. I love the all-white aesthetic.
Exactly - modularity and interconnectivity is the key!! Glad you found it useful!
This is the home organisation system I've been looking for. So logical, love it!
@@handsonkatie Probably I have to find a good multiboard design. Now I'll use yours links
If you have a laser cutter, you can do the grids on that much quicker.
@@FleetfootMike great point, I also use my CNC for even more precise grids!

I agree on the pegboard.
Thank YOU!
You are so welcome!
Gotta say the persuasion parts would work with me. I need my partner to start trying to convince me she wants 3d printers!
Absolutely love this system. Great video. Thank you!
Glad you like it! ☺️
I love this! I’m a fellow woman in tech and your video is fun and entertaining as well as super informative. I was torn between skadis and honeycomb for walls but you’ve convinced me on multiboard.
Well wait and see if I can convince you on the LEDs - there's no ordinary LEDs going into my workshop - what if they could save your life.....!! ;)
I absolutely love my P1S, which I bought in February. Waiting on my second AMS to ship as we speak! I have GridFinity on my paint desk.
Well..... no. It doesn't manage itself over time 😂
I have been thinking of getting a 3D printer, so the biggest next question is: what are the important things to look for when buying a 3D printer?
😂😂😂 It's like you an me are living the same life! I had almost exactly the same conversation! With regards to 3D Printer, it's really not too hard at the moment, I'd highly recommend Bambu Lab's range - I've got links on my site as I get asked this quite a lot: handsonkatie.com/recommended-products/
There's three currently at different price points, but they're all really nice and plug and play - I'd probably actually recommend starting with the A1 or the P1s (ie cheaper ones) as they're likely more than you'll ever need! Yes!!! We've been waiting *ages* to see your underware! :D
This is one of the most brilliant ideas I've seen in a while and a real world example really helps show off how innovative it is!
My solution actually is just prevention over cure - ie robot vacuums are great for constantly removing any dust and as you'll know, I've got air sensors that trigger them at the slightest hint of dust.... ;)

Keep it up!
P.S. my wife would like to see videos about your sewing :)
...well I just happen to be sewing right now for the next video, so she'd better keep watching... 😊
That was an EPIC video! So many creative and genius Ideas! I'm coming back to this video when I get home...I cant wait for the Underware!...I've been looking for something just like that!
Thanks Steven! Glad you liked it and it gave you some ideas!! Underware is coming soon, was testing it with my patreon gang in the next few days!
Oh God, I need the underware. Was trying to clean up some wires and this looks like such a better idea. When will it be available?
I'm brainstorming ideas with my patreons at the moment (ie all the parts they might need) and then I'm modelling them all next week, so probably next couple of weeks for the first release!
Can't wait for those big hook and underware downloads! Those exactly what I need right now.
Hooks now available on my site: handsonkatie.com/product/set-of-hooks-for-multiboard-multiple-sizes/
Enjoy!
It is really good to have one unified system, otherwise you're trying to make different systems fit together and they don't, so I love this grid affinity approach, please excuse some of the wording, I used speech to text, as I have low vision, and it doesn't get it right all the time 😢
Ooh welcome to the club then my little convert!! 😂 Yes, for a brick/cinder wall, I'd maybe think about just mounting some plywood sheets (allows you to just screw in a few places to the wall, then easy peasy to screw multiboard or whatever into the wood)! Good luck printing!
absolutely great video, informative, entertaining and interesting. I am defiantly going to copy some of your ideas. Love the cricut vinyl holder.
Great Video!
Now I have a new project concerning my (chaotic) workshop. (And I want a bigger 3D Printer for those Grids...)
Gotta keep those projects coming!!! 😊
Thanks for the video, very interesting. I am actually printing the multiboard with bottles pet filament and will thake some ideas from you. Thanks for your video. Cheers from Spain.
Awesome idea, love it!
You're an actual genius.
She is!!!! A genius
Oh Where did you find the spool holders for your embroidery thread? Also the double ones? Hunting to add to my Husbands list.
Your room looks awesome!
I don't know if I'll need Neogrid for my stuff, but I can definitely see use cases for Multiboard
PS I love your presenting style!
Amazing, love your ideas. I am going to organises my work spaces.
Of course! - I've got a video coming up at some point on this actually, think there's lots of basic principles like this that get neglected!
@@handsonkatie Wonderful! Your videos are unique and uniquely satisfying!
Love the Video.. Question. No issues with the Melting of the 3D printed materials/items above your "Heater"
For my part, I cannot imagine printing so much stuff for my organization purposes right now since I only have one really small Ender 2 Pro and not the space (and maybe money) to invest in more printers.
Double points for you!!! 🤩
A bambu sale starts today.
Tpu is tricky. Print it slower and do NOT use the AMS.
This was so well done and informative, thank you!
Love the website. Very excited about the under the desk cord cleaner (underware) 3d prints. When do you think they will be available?
Next week!! Just testing the last pieces with Patreons!!! 😊
Yes ! The video i have been waiting for. So inspiring and of high quality.
Have an urge to get to work and buy more printers.
Thanks !
....my work is done then ... 😙😙😙🤣🤣
Fantstic video! Perfect combination of informative of entertaining! subscribed
I just use the single screw with the tool head - I've actually included it in the printables file now if that's easier to find!
Superb Video and wish I could give it a double thumbs up. I am going to take you up on the timestamp identification... At 1:42 there are a wonderful pair of headphone holders. Can you please point me to the model you used
Thank you! Of course, I'll add it to my upload list for tomorrow - check my site tomorrow (and do email me if I forget!!)
Very Great Organisation I will try to implement in my Fablab
Great idea - love fablabs!!!
@@handsonkatie Anything that helps with cable management would be great.
🤣🤣 he got it....!
Wow, what a hit for you. Nice job on this video. You feel just a tiny bit robotic, blink a few more times or just soften your eyes a bit. Totally subscribing can't wait for your next one.
Heheh! You discovered my secret.... 🤖🤖🤖🤖! 🤣🤣
Awesome! My workshop need a complete overhaul... time to print :)
Big video on that topic in the coming months - my workshop is gonna be transformed!! (let's share notes!)
This looks great and I love it. Do you think it will get very dusty over time, and how easy is it going to be to clean?
I've had wall mounted stuff like this for years and never suffered from that, although that's probably more due to the diligence of my robot vacuums than me.... 🤣🤣🤣. Another advantage is it's super easy to clean, you could just take the pieces off in seconds and literally vacuum the wall if you wanted!
I would recommend to put everything in cabinets and drawers to keep dust off. Make Your owns with wide windows to see what’s inside.
Great job on this. You have got me motivated! 👍
This woman is absolutely amazing ❤
That is really awesome! But how long did it take to print all this and how much did you spent on Filament?! 🙈

Great video. Wonderful ideas!
How did you mount the multiboard on the inside of the kitchen cabinets? Just a small fat screw into one of the smaller holes?
Yes, just a short 18mm pan head screw gave a really strong grip!

Hey!! Yes, drop me an email and I can introduce you to the developer on my discord channel (plus loads of other cool parametric generators for this that will make it super easy!!)
I love your underware.
Literally just saw Linus tech tips try to flog me expensive magnets, but I'm going to use your underware instead.
First release of underware on track this week or next - some amazing ideas from my Patreons for it too!!
:D Would you be able to share those labels as well as the vinyl holders themselves? at 0:12 you have a quick view of a claw hammer holder.
