  • Shazeebo has made another Shade sail Installation video to help the DIYers with their shade sail project. This video shows that anyone can install a post by themselves for their shade sail. This video also shows a few tricks that may make the installation easier and faster like the 5 dollar cement mixer and diy pole brace. Hope you enjoy the video.

    Steel or wood, you never want the top of the concrete under dirt. Water will pool and eventually rust out that post. Leave it a little around and trowel it so it slopes away from the pole

    The tarp idea for mixing the concrete Is brilliant. You can pick up super cheap tarps at Harbor Freight. Adding the bolt to the pole which will be buried in the concrete is also a great idea. I think I may put two of them in at a 90° angle to each other to prevent tipping in any direction. Definitely going to use some of your ideas in my project, thank you!

    Drilling big holes in metal with a hand drill is dangerous. If no option, drill a small hole first, then bigger, then the final hole;) Also, literally the weight of the drill is sufficient pressure, if not, you need a sharper bit. Lube also helps. Everything will last longer, including you;)

    Nice video and informative. The problem in encasing the pole with concrete is eventually over time the chemicals in the concrete will react to the metal causing corrosion. Coat the pipe with some roofing tar/cement or wrap it in plastic.

    I am going to use some old exploration drill rods for the very same purpose. This is the very video I am looking for. Thank you. If I may contribute my two cents worth. Regarding the drill grabs and twists near the end, what I usually do is lift the drill slightly off and then drop it down ever so gently, almost like touching the hole before it breaks through. If you are to keep the same pressure all the way through, the drill bit will bite into the wall and violently twist the drill, and possibly your wrist.

    • @SHAZEEBOShadeSails
      @SHAZEEBOShadeSails  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sam, the posts just need to be placed so that they avoid any pool equipment pipes and wiring. Consideration should also be made for easy walking around the pool (i.e. don't put a post right by the stairs into the pool). Rope will probably be fine, you just may need to replace it in a few years. Steel cable will last longer and be stronger, but does your sail come with a pocket around the perimeter to feed the cable into so it goes all the way around the sail?

      Hi Shannon, we always recommend a schedule 40 steel post for your shade sail projects. You can order custom made posts from your local fencing or metal supplier. Don't forget to get them powder-coated for a beautiful look and to resist rusting! The height and diameter of the post will vary depending on the size of your sail and other factors. • @SHAZEEBOShadeSails
      @SHAZEEBOShadeSails  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We are not engineers, but the general recommendation is to go with a minimum 4" diameter steel post with schedule 40 thickness. If your posts are taller than 11' out of the ground, we recommend a 6" diamter post. The general rule of thumb for footer depth is that about 1/3 of the post should be buried in a concrete footer that is 2' wide. So a 10' tall out of the ground post is 15' in length with 5' buried in the footer. This is a general recommendation because it will depend on your soil and other factors.

    I don't understand having concrete not at the same level as the adjacent ground. The dirt that you put around the base of the pole is going to cause rusting at the base of the pole. It seems better to put concrete higher than the adjacent ground, or at least coating the pole with a robust protective coating.

    • @SHAZEEBOShadeSails
      @SHAZEEBOShadeSails  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Oregon Phototrekker! I apologize for the delayed response, it's getting busy over here as we enter the summer months. We do recommend that you have your posts powder coated, not only do they look better but they also protect the post from rust. I cannot recall the reason for not having the posts powder coated for this particular customer. As far as the dirt, some customers don't like to see the concrete footing and would prefer a more seamless look with the rest of their yard.

      Hi M C, great question! The shade sail, when installed and pulled tight with cable and turnbuckles, will put a lot of pressure on the post. Unless you have an incredibly deep footer, the post will pull inwards a tiny bit. If you start with the post tilting outwards, the pull from the sail will stand it up straight.

    This ain't a genuine shade sail post project...I hope ! Seriously crappy 250 grade ungalvanised steel will rust out all too quickly.
    I've been doing shade sails for 20 years and have yet to see a post "pull up and out of the ground" ... The bit of allthread or bolt at the post bottom is a waste of time and effort. If the hole, concrete, soil and post height are not properly "engineered the post is likely to pull OVER but not up.

    • @ironqqq
      @ironqqq 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +John Simmonds I've been doing research to install my own shade sail and I must say this video is pretty poor quality work. They spent $5 on a tarp but for $13 you can buy a concrete mixing tub at Home Depot. One reason why there is so much kick back on the drill is because they are drilling way to fast. Drilling through steel it should only be a couple of hundred RPMs. The cost of getting a custom shade sail, buying a schedule 40 galvanized pole, you're already spending maybe $800 bucks... I don't see why they couldn't spend an additional $8 to buy a concrete mixing tub.
