Fun fact that I should’ve posted long ago: when Halo CE was released, I actually never bought and owned the game, I would just go to friends’ homes and play the game. In November 2004, my uncle bought me Halo 2. I beat Halo 2 before I even played and saw the actual finish of Halo 1. In 2006, I played this mission with a friend of mine at his apartment. When the opening theme of this mission came on, I immediately recognized it and was so surprised and happy at the same time! Halo’s soundtrack is absolutely timeless!
I remember when I first played this campaign, I was hanging out with a few friends and I got to this part, and they both said “oh yeah, this part is really good, you’re gonna like this” and I remember feeling excited but also tense because of the music and just how the story was coming to a climax. But my friends were right. It was amazing.
Ahhh the trademark soundtrack of the flood....the nostalgia of running through the library and the level before it carrying an assault rifle and a shotgun. Every room potentially flooded with enemies. You check your motion tracker, hear sounds in the walls, clutching your weapon close, you proceed into a room seeing many bodies on littered around the room....yet there's no sign of what killed them. Just an empty silence....
The music starting at 5:40 ish is the cutscene where 343 disables the self-destruct sequence, I don’t know much about music but I really rate it as one of Marty’s most powerful pieces to accompany a cutscene. It’s the ominous low strings underlying the familiar theme that just gives me goosebumps, and at 6:27 when it lifts to the higher register just as cortana’s exasperated ‘He stopped the self-destruct sequence’ is an amazing moment of just ‘are you kidding me?!?’ And obviously the music’s dramatic change when chief presents the comically large grenade, I feel it really does a lot to set the stage for the final battle😊
Yah, it’s like in that moment chief and cortana both know they’re probably not gonna make it out alive. But without needing to say a word, both know their duty to humanity and life itself is paramount. They had a good run, but now a job needs finishing. The song captures that somber yet righteous vibe perfectly. Mmmph! So good, so weighty! Perfect culmination of the entire game!
20:22 The Warthog Run we all know. We don't think of Drumrun, because it just gives as a sense of tension with all the fighting going on, but not real alarm. 20:22, that makes you think, "WE NEED TO GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!"
I don't think anybody knows but when you enter the engine room and you take a right, I think, where you end up having to jump over the hulls (3 of them) and enter another room that leads up, 'Covenant Dance' plays as you encounter more flood there.

Doesn’t it pulsate a energy like of like despair because you see your whole ship under control of a foreign enemy you don’t understand. You stand as a last like of defense and makes me feel like I may know what will come next.

yeah I know what part you're talking about. It's that flood chokepoint that's in the one of the corridors leading up to where the reactor control panels are. I got stuck in it a lot so I heard that track quite often.

It really conveys this feeling of hopelessness and being left for dead after witnessing Echo 419 crash and then 20:23 starts and you regain the confidence to push on. You’re basically saying at this point “one shot is all I got. It’s now or nothing”

Yup but most people do miss it in-game if they rush it. If you keep walking to the top of the engine room as Cortana is giving instructions, the majority of the Flood if any won't be able to spawn in time and the music won't play. I think it's a pretty cool section. If it's your first time you're playing, you think that's pretty easy objective to do. And then that music kicks in and wave after wave of Flood keeps coming. You're like oh shit... They actually do respawn when you retreat even a step back and you have to push forward to stop the respawn. Not infinite though but enough to let you know that this will be a shooting gallery.
So many memories of this level. I never had so much fun playing on the pillar of autumn since the opening of the game. That rush and feeling of fighting your way to save everything you know and love from being turned into Ash and Oblivion by a Halo ring. The terror of the flood and the desperate covenant trying to survive the threats in between. And then there is you... A lone cowboy sending off his horse to die a dignified death destroying the Halo ring. So many great memories; and I would kill the play it again
Just finished the game for the first time in about 10 years with the MCC on PC and left the remastered soundtrack on for most of the game without thinking too much about it, but just knowing that everything felt a little bit off for some reason. The Maw got me to realize just how big a role the music played in my feeling of discomfort and so (having an irritating bug completely ruin my final cutscene by playing looping music on top of the ending theme) I opted to do the level again real quick on easy and the difference was night and day. The original score was so intrinsic to the actions on screen and the remaster is so pale by comparison because it was just created to try and make everything sound more modern and change it for the sake of change. Don't mess with perfection, 343. If you ever want to go back and play CE again, be sure to change the music to the original. Your experience will improve ten-fold.
That moment on the last warthog run, where the ship is exploding around you, sentinels, flood and covenant are duking it out...its like your seeing just how destructive warfare can be

I was really young playing Halo Combat evolved in 2001 when it came out. I'm so so thankful to have such an amazing experience at such a young age. This isn't just some shooter it's such an experience, every bit of the game is a masterpiece
