You have changed my whole perspective on art! I've just started urban sketching after watching your videos and have never enjoyed something creative this much! Can't wait to do more. Thank you for inspiring :)
I also love the final details with the pen. I painted along with you and can see that I am improving bit by bit and I am most often so pleased with what shows up on the paper. When you work quickly it makes me relax and just 'go for it' and that is the feeling I want from my work. Thank you. Very well done. AGAIN.
Definitely prefer the bold lines. I've just recently discovered your tutorials and you've helped me so much in loosening up my lines. Your tutorials, your voice), are easy to listen to and your visuals are direct and clear. So glad I found you and follow you on Instagram. Thank you!
I wanted the buildings to be brown! What you did was very attractive. Should give us all confidence. Your voiceover is always encouraging and confident!
Toby, thank you for sharing this sketch. I am a newbie looking to make sketching and watercolor in my own means and methods. I started with really detailing urban sketches and people and find more happiness suggesting rather than documenting. I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts ask you sketched which helps me connect the lines with your visualization. Have a great day!
Another really helpful video, many tips and techniques in a short time and showing how sketches can be done quickly. I prefer the 'after', I find differentiating the built from the natural adds definition to a scene and can help with perspective. Thank you.
This was fun, loved both sketches but agree the bold lines defined the houses more clearly. Wish I could walk this street into town like you do, so lovely and different from my suburban neighborhood. Excellent tutorial with perfect voice over and low music in background. New subscriber here. Thanks so much.
I’ve watched a lot of tutorials, and yours are by far the simplest and more comfortable to follow. I had to laugh I’m in Arizona and in the summer we keep the windows CLOSED ☺️
Haha this is a lesson I learned in the heat - windows and curtains closed. Sadly we don't have Aircon, so the best we can do is turn a fan on and hope for the best 😂
Thank you so much for this very encouraging work of art. I particularly liked that you could sort of bring your own interpretation into the work, which I would now like to try. I have always been self-conscious about my art work, but your approach seems excellent. I really like the idea too that you can sketch something like this, and use your own colouring, add interesting further details if you wish. So I’m very glad I found your video, because I do so think your style and approach, and way of sketching are delightful! I also liked that you tended to concentrate on a suggestion of some of the items in the picture, and I do think that this is interestingly very effective. Thanks, again, and I’ll look forward to practicing and enjoying more of your work in the future.
Je comprends juste un peu de français :) mais (hopefully) suffisamment pour comprendre votre commentaire et vous dire merci ! I hope that makes sense hehe
Really enjoyed that., magic! You made it look so easy, and gave me confidence. Yes the added black lines were fun ….definitely completed the piece, i woulda added a pop of red colour on the car for extra contrast, without over doing. Subscribing. Thankyou 😊
Excelente trabajo!!, La pluma Lamy que ha utilizado la tinta es permanente y resistente al agua, o es tinta normal. Muchas gracias por sus enseñanzas, tienes nuevo suscriptor
Wow! Just took your advice and did a quick loose still life…I actually like it! In less than 10 minutes I produced two apples, two bananas, an orange and a vase with a monstera branch. Who knew it was even possible? I didn’t!
Thanks I have a similar vista of a canal scenario near me in bathampton just outside bath NE Somerset these techniques will work out just as well although the water will need to be worked on kindest regards mickT
I could watch you for hours, my sketching is abysmal I can't seem to get the perspective or angles right. I'm ok with flowers and trees but not with buildings at all so very rewarding to watch you😊

Love your stuff! Been inspired to have -another!- go myself? Have to say I preferred to ‘before’ though really liked your other vid with the ‘Nelsons” shop after you’d used the larger outliner there!?
Prefer the the "before" @11:50. I liked the almost minimalistic look of not adding colour to the building walls. The bold lines draw attention to empty white space and takes away from the overall composition.

Hi Toby I discovered your tutorials yesterday & was amazed to see my local town! I will be working my way through all your tutorials. I also prefer the bold lines at the end. Your sketches are great. Thankyou. When you are out & about & painting in a sketchbook, what paper thickness would you recommend? as I notice you use quite a lot of water (probably where I'm going wrong 😅)
Hello from St Neots! Come along to the Urban Sketch meet ups if you fancy it :) For sketching like this - minimum 150gsm, but that can be a bit dicey. I usually use Moleskin sketchbooks - 220gsm - but my paper is all a minimum of 300gsm.
I loved your loose style but you verticals, vanishing lines and scale are all spot on even if tgey are loose, for me the archway door way a little too bold although the White fur seal on the right hand side did dissapear when the bold pen came back 😊😊
Toby this is great. Prefer the bolder lines but want to know why you didn’t detail the large tree. Would that counter the negative space you trying to create as it would be too similar?
Thanks for the comment and good question. The simple answer is I often don't add much detail to trees, normally an outline and a suggestion of detail. Especially for quick sketching 😊
Is there video somewhere on loading paint onto the brush: how much water, when to rinse, how to keep the water and pans clean? Everyone does it so deftly but I struggle.
Found it curious the negative remarks about the clean up or heavy line. (A good reason not to put content out there). Wondering if a side by side of the Unibal and the yellow fountain pen; wonder how small quick side by side vignettes would compare / contrast or have you noticed in your experience any discernible difference? Thank you for your work. It appears to me that you are assembling works for a book - yes-no? Think about it
Question (stoopid one I know): Better to stick to one single/continuous line or is it OK to break the line (and then, better to try and continue at the same point I left off)?
Yes! Me too... In fact, I was skimming through all the comments to see if anyone else felt the same. The first sketch was fabulous with the lighter strokes giving a washed-out feel to the entire piece. Super work, Toby... I discovered your channel recently and it's giving me the push to pick up my watercolors again! Thanks for sharing such lovely tips🙏👍
Great How To....and very encouraging for beginners. However, I think leaving the buildings white hints at unfinished...but in 10 minutes, the result is impressive.....now, where is my brand new drawing kit.......?

Thank you so much!
Love it. Can’t get enough. I prefer the end result, thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
I agree. The boulder lines did add punch and I liked that best.
Thanks Christine!

So many useful little techniques you share with us. As always, so grateful!
My pleasure!
Thanks!
wow thanks!!
yes love the definition of the bold lines. Thank you. I'm just starting out in this method.

Hi Frances, thanks for the comment. Very interesting to hear people's opinions on those one!
I definitely prefer the after!!

always so crazy to see how quickly these come to life
Hehe thanks!
The sketch is so full of life! It's fantastic you can make it in 10 minutes. I am happy to discover your chanel
Thank you so much 😀
Loved the bolder lines! And I loved the video! I definitely want to have the ability to draw as you do! It’s beautiful and so fun to look at!!
You can do it, no doubts :) Thanks for the comment :)
LOVE your tutorials!. I’m trying so hard to sketch loose and it is a real struggle. You make it all look so easy.
Thanks so much 😊
this made really fun…first I was afraid of overdoing it, but when I saw the final result I was convinced! Thank you, Toby!
Brilliant, thanks Martina!
Really like your simplistic drawing style. I get caught up in the details, TY for the tips.
Glad it was helpful!
Your urban sketching is waking me up to something! I want to try!
You should!
This is just wonderful! Thank you for filming and explaining the process

Wonderful!
It was all good. You didn't go "overboard" with the outlining which I think takes away from the watercolor. Very nicely done Toby
Thanks Donna!
Love the "after"!
Thanks!

I would have liked the car to be red, or some other color, even if it detracted from the arched doorway. But, gorgeous line & wash, as usual!

I usually use Moleskin sketchbooks - 220gsm - but my paper is all a minimum of 300gsm.
Love your work you explain the process well. My one question is why didn't you paint the car?
No good reason! Just a decision I matter on the day, I agree a rich of colour in the car could have been interesting
I loved your loose style but you verticals, vanishing lines and scale are all spot on even if tgey are loose, for me the archway door way a little too bold although the White fur seal on the right hand side did dissapear when the bold pen came back 😊😊
🤣🤣 poor seal

The simple answer is I often don't add much detail to trees, normally an outline and a suggestion of detail. Especially for quick sketching 😊

Glad it was helpful!
Definitely the after. I though that it looked a bit weak before whereas having better definition brought the sketch out more.
Thanks again for your comments and thoughts! Much appreciated :)
Loved the extra pen work. It really made the sketch sing! You didn’t bolden the street lamp though, not sure by design or time constraints?
I think by the nature of time constraints more than anything - not a conscious decision!
love it!
:)
Is there video somewhere on loading paint onto the brush: how much water, when to rinse, how to keep the water and pans clean? Everyone does it so deftly but I struggle.
I must confess not to having a video that covers all these point. . But the ideas are good ones, I'll try to create something :)
@@TobySketchLoose ❤
Would like to do something similar but mural size, same principles?
An interesting question.. I'm not sure! I would imagine so but the preview works be very different
Have you ever sat down on that wall and done a sketch of this place along the road? It's something I would want to do if I walked along there often.
I have, several times ☺️
Bravo!!
Thank you :)
Great tutorial thank you 🙂 Are you sketching on watercolour paper (smooth?) or normal sketching stock please? Cheers! Dudley
This, if I remember correclty, is lihgtly textured cold pressed watercolour paper
Lovely watercolor! What ink do you use in your Lami pen? Thanks :)
In the description
Hmmm... I do not see it listed. Under your Amazon lists with my supplies I see two listed: Waterman Fountain Pen In and the Platinum Carbon Ink.
Think about it
Currently assembling a big course :) lots of works to go in that as examples!
A side by side would be interesting indeed! thanks for the ideas
Question (stoopid one I know): Better to stick to one single/continuous line or is it OK to break the line (and then, better to try and continue at the same point I left off)?
Not stupid! Anything is ok, normally I break up there line a few times then picky it back up wherever feels right 👍
Hi Toby, loving your videos. What paper do you use.
Thanks Paul, my papers are on my website - check out urbansketch.co.uk/supplies-1 for more info
Great work.

No problem!
Love both. But on this one I prefer the first sketch
Ahh interestin, love hearing different opinions on topics like this!
Yes!
I prefer the before. Consistently suggesting all street elements. But both look good.
Noted! I can see your view of course!
What type of paper did you use please?
Hi Trevor - I believe this paper is Daler Rowney student grade A4 cold pressed paper - my normal papers are listed on urbansketch.co.uk/supplies-1
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
Great How To....and very encouraging for beginners. However, I think leaving the buildings white hints at unfinished...but in 10 minutes, the result is impressive.....now, where is my brand new drawing kit.......?
Thank you, and your point of view is certainly valid! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Great tutorial but i can't decide on the bold outline. Maybe it is just a little too thick a line to my eye.
I'm probably with you here - it becomes very illustrative with a thick line, but sometimes works really well...
Great! But not everything has to be quick... Take your time!
Some of us draw to relax 😉. Thanks for sharing your work!
Haha you are quite right - I''m a bit manic, so even doing a quick sketch is relative relaxation for me ;)

What kind and size brush is this?
Hi Tina, it's the top brush here listed on my website - www.urbansketch.co.uk/supplies/watercolour-brushes (the size 2 by Jackson)
I’m a beginner and learned a lot watching this. The suggestion of the steps and how to loosely draw is very helpful to me. I’m still trying to discover my style.
@@debrabrooks1790 :)
Advanced through all the sketches on TH-cam nobody seems to tell us beginners what type of ink pen to use for these sketches
