Just found Stinkhorn eggs digging around the soil surrounding my greenhouse in Colorado. I have to say, I was extremely grossed out by the eggs and glad I got rid of them before they popped up! Thank you for the video!
I wish you luck ridding your area of these disgusting fly magnets. We put down mulch years ago yhat had these spores in it. No matter what we've done they always come back and everywhere. Just when you think finally,..and they're back. Even removing all the old mulch and surrounding soil, a constant battle. Again good luck and don't let your guard down.
Found your excellent video searching for information on chanterelles, and I'm so glad to see you're still making videos! Great production, great information, I'm definitely subscribing and looking forward to more!
So glad I found your Channel I live in Florida and I'm looking into trying out the wild plants and shrooms Foraging in my area. There are tons of shrooms in the 1 acre I'm living in. It's been one wet summer. Lol. Love your dog! Take care and God bless
Oh my gosh that was hysterical how you sat behind it. For the first time ever , I have these growing next to our entrance door of our house. We did put fresh mulch down in the early summer, so I assume it wasn't as 'fresh' as we thought. HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM? CLEAN OUT THE MULCH? THEY'RE EMABARRASSING! I did pick them out with gloves, and ewww they do stink! I cleaned out some of the mulch, and I see it's moldy underneath. Can I spray it down with Lysol or something to kill the mold?
They are very funny... They must be a joke from the mushroom kingdom. I'm afraid I wouldn't know how to get rid of them but rest assured I think their season is quite short lived. You can always remove them when they are in the witches egg form before they turn into the hilarious phallus.
@@JamieKunka Weirdly, yes. They had a white/yellow stem that looked as though it was woven and a stinky greenish brown slimy top (located in Sydney). After I removed them, they grew again (I still didn't know to remove the eggs). This time I knew they were supposed to smell like carrion, but they still smelt like chlorine to me. Either they are a strange variety or my nose/brain is, possibly both :)
I used a plant ID app because I had no idea what was going on! There was just an "off" chlorine smell and a strange phallic looking fungus growing out of the bamboo leaf litter. I only remember that it was a stinkhorn. Next time one pops up I'll record the detailed ID.
OK Mr. Kunka! 2:40 got me laughing with that pose XD Again thank you for sharing such an informative video. And I commend you for getting so up close and personal, even smelling it to describe it to us. I appreciate that. Keep up the good work. I love your mushroom videos
Hey Jamie! Me and my girlfriend love your videos and so we were wondering what area of Scotland you use to pick them up or what are you think is the best. Keep it up! Thank you mate.
Hey guys I live in deepest Highland Perthshire! Really great for the mushrooms up here. So good in fact that Beatrix Potter would come up especially to here to paint them! They whole of Perthshire seems to be a bit of a mushroom haven with its mix of old trees and moist mossy forests!
I unfortunately got a massive mess of stinkhorns in my mulch and landscaping and it killed my delphinium garden.. I live in northern Wisconsin I’ve never seen them before in my life and they are unrelenting and keep popping up….yuck
Hi, first of a very informative fun video !! Although i have a question if you could answer that. I would like to know the exact mechanism of how the indusium ( net like structure) sprouts from the cap and forms the bell like shape ? Is it due to the internal pressure ? And also the Indusium is already interconnected forming polygons while spreading out ? Thank you so much !!
wow.. was wandering in the back of my yard yesterday morning and I saw a pinkish thing that looks what you just showed. Its top was flooded with flies. Surprisingly a few moments went to check and it collapsed by itself to the ground. What a short life it has! lol! This is in Uganda (same stuff but pink)
The eggs you found were already about to come out. The best eggs are hidden, you can barely find them. They like very soft terrain, mossy, covered in leaves or chipped wood, it needs to be fluffy, so to speak. The eggs need to be white when you find them, the gelatin shouldn't be naturally exposed. There should be a white membrane, then gelatin and then the egg. You can eat the whole egg, that is under the jelly, not just the white part. You can eat it raw or cooked. The jelly you can use on burns or face masks.
@@JamieKunka I only found the common stinkhorns, there are a few kinds of stinkhorns. I like them cooked. I take the jelly membrane off the egg ( not the outside membrane, but the one that covers the middle part), slice, salt generously, add pepper, add some butter and fry for a bit. They have a nutty-radish taste. They are amazing. These and Shaggy mane mushrooms, are my favorites. I forage quite a bit until late October, but the majority of the eggs are out by then or too mature to harvest ( about to come out). If the egg develops into a mature stinkhorn after harvesting, that egg was too old to be harvested, but you can still put the mushroom outside so the flies pick up the spores on their feet and perpetuate the species.
Jamie Kunka Yeah I saw the little bulb in the yard probably last week. I didn’t know what it was and I left it alone. Then yesterday I saw the mushroom had no idea what it was I saw the olive color ooze coming off it Worried it was poisonous, got 3 dogs. Went on TH-cam and started watching videos on mushrooms, pretty cool
Am I the only one who doesnt mind the smell. We have some in upstate. I didnt know what it was. But the smell doesnt bother me. The only reason i got rid of them was due to all the flies they attract. Facking hate those buggers.
There’s 69 comments 😮 Law of Signatures, it looks like a dick, it’s good for the dick. Just like a tomato being red with four chambers and is good for the heart, and an avocado is oval and takes 9 months to grow to fruit, it’s good for a woman’s health and womb.

I think you just couldn't resist straddling that shroom...lol
Not only does Jamie make some cool as skis, but he also makes the best mushroom videos out there. Keep up the awesome videos, Jamie (please)

Wow that sounds like a shroom heaven! I've got a few new fun videos on the way soon 😁
November in Texas where the stinkhorns and witches eggs are showing themselves. What a neat and unusual fungus.
What a fun video 😂 Thanks for enduring the stench!
Its still stuck in my nostrils today 😂

For some reason, the stinkhorns that grew in my bamboo troughs smelled a bit like a public swimming pool, but nauseatingly strong.
Interesting! Kind of like bleachy chlorine smell?

Any ID on the specific stinkhorn? Perhaps a special Aussie one!

Yeh it was pretty stinky and just such a hilarious mushroom with a funny name. I feel like the early mushroom folks must have been embarrassed by it 😂

I didn't know you could find a Plumbus in the wild, thought they were only manufactured

It’s called turgor pressure, it’s basically hydraulics through water within the cell walls. It’s how the exploding cucumbers go flying too
lmfao 2:34 where’s your stick? then lines the stinkhorn perfectly up with his pickle
I just found a pink one in my front flower bed and came to youtube to hear more about it.
Wow a pink one!
Me too. Its covered in flies
Your vids are cool mate liked and subscribed keep em coming ✌️
Thanks a lot! I've got some ideas for some more in the next week or so 🍄

Thanks for the great info Miri! I'll have to hunt for them carefully next season. I'd be interested to know what do they taste like?

If I’m out with someone and see this I’ll say “Oh I’ve heard these mushrooms smell lovely. Take a deep sniff!”
What a way to lose a friend!
I have them all over my yard that has mulch.. just trying to make sure that it is a stink horn
In France we call it "Stinky Satyr "...
I don't share your unconditional love for them - I dug up one (the only one) in my yard today. If it comes back I'm gonna burn my house down.
How do you get rid of it
It is in my garden
Just found one in my yard about 6 inches tall
Damn!
