    I have K&N air filters on my 2005 Honda CBR1000RR and I check them every time I do an oil change because I like to keep my bike running at peak performance. I went almost 4000 miles before I cleaned the filters the last time because I was in a hurry to change the motor oil and skipped the air filter cleaning. By that time, the oil filters we very grimmy and full of dirt. I can not even imagine how the air filters will look if I went over 6000 miles without cleaning them. Also, I get a very good seal with my K&N air filters in the air box because it is almost dust free in there. I also do my best not to over oil the air filters. Long story short, don't use any air filter that does not give you a good seal and always change or clean the air filter as often as possible for peak performance and engine longevity.

    From what i have seen, K&N and its clones is a good way to make you familiar with the insides of your engine. Any performance improvement is slight and short lived.
    Very quickly the increased wear will negate any gains.

    I always ensure the Integrity of the installation and the seal before I criticize a poorly designed aftermarket part. I do see air filters that are installed incorrectly. Those are not included in these videos. The only ones I include in the videos are the ones where the filters were correctly sealed to the airbox and dirt did go through the filter. Look up a guy who's channel is Project Farm . He is one of countless people who has done filtration test on K&N air filters. K&N air filters were never designed to be long-term filters. They were designed by off-road Racers who needed a filter that would not become plugged up in an off-road race, the resulting dirt that went through it was not enough to damage an engine for a short-term race. You can't change my mind, these type filters do not stop dirt.

    I would have thought a motorcycle mechanic would have spotted the filters were not even oiled ... It's also a good practice to put a thin layer of grease where the filter mates up with the airbox to make a good seal and keep the rubber from drying out. I've ran K&N filters on perhaps every vehicle I've owned the last 30 years with no problems whatsoever...

    • @patrickscycleshop
      @patrickscycleshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      how about oem filters? do they ever dry out ? no they do not. the reason OEM filters are plugged up at 8,000 miles is because they stop all dirt. k&N filters willget the oil sucked out of them after several thousand miles. Would you like to come to my shop and see the hundreds of k&n filter equipped engines torn apart (all with dirt ingenstion caused compression loss) and notice that I dont have any torn apart that had OEM filters?? hmm, see the pattern here?

    Actually K&N does not recommend to clean their air filters every 50k miles, they recommend to change them every 50k miles, they actually recommend to inspect and clean them each time you do a service.
    I am just rebuilding my 2008 cbr600rr and taken out the air filter which has been in the bike for the past 2 years without being cleaned. It had so much dirt in it i could not believe it. The air box also looks dirty and i had issue with the bike not starting. Now my bike has 62k miles and been running a K&N filter since 14k miles, being regularly cleaned up until 2 years ago, not had any issues but after seeing some dirt and other videos about the filter not stopping dirt ill go back to OEM

    • @patrickscycleshop
      @patrickscycleshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      As of the time when I posted this comment, that was k&n recommendation. They have obviously changed that. Their instructions now recommend that you visually inspect the air filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if it needs to be cleaned. The engines in all of my videos were completely worn out with compression problems well before 25,000 miles.

      beyond words. MY personal K&N experience began in 1990 when an engine I built suffered a gradual compression loss over 20,000 miles. upon disassembly i discovered scratches on all of the pistons and cylinders, I have scrutinized EVERY machine i worked on and discovered EVERY stock filter bike had zero dirt in airbox and EVERY K&N filtered bike did. seeing is believing. Most racers dont tear their bikes down that often. I personally know many racers that have many seasons on race engines that have never been torn apart other than needed maintenance such as valve adjustments, etc. good air filters filter dirt out, period!

  • @nicethelyrical1529
    @nicethelyrical1529 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can't blame the dirt in the airbox on the filter. That bike could have been ran with no filter the first 27,000 miles then the person says let's put a K&N in it... who really knows?

    • @patrickscycleshop
      @patrickscycleshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      always a perspective to consider. I do my best to be subjective on these videos. I have numerous customer owned bikes ive worked on for years having been the ONLY person that's been under the tanks since they were new, the owners refused to switch from the K&N filters, i see this dirt past them and i can safely say that it definitely was the result of poor filtration and not incorrect installation or neglect.

    My question is what if I cleaned the air filter more frequently would it be ok? Or is the k&n shit right from the start?

    • @patrickscycleshop
      @patrickscycleshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would help, but.... a freshly oiled k&n filter is restrictive to the air flow. This is proven on the dyno. After the oil gets sucked out it flows better but then less filtration. See the flaw? OEM filters simply dont pass dirt unless they get massively covered in dirt, then they cut back power because they are plugged up... because they are stopping all the dirt.
