  • Perfect World is an old MMORPG that initially released in China in 2005 and in EU/NA in 2008, This game is free to play and still seems to have between 500 and 1000 people playing daily, This game features 80 vs 80 territory wars, tab targeting combat with flying, dungeons, world bosses, raids, player housing and player shops.
This year I planned to go back and check out some of these old MMOs mostly for a bit of fun, to give you guys some nostalgia and see how they stack up today after years of updates.
What do you think about Perfect World International in current year? would you like to see a squeal on PC? do you think it's still worth playing? and do you have any memories you'd like to share about the game? let me know in the comments below!

Yo so I'll still be covering all the new MMOs and I have plans for Crowfall, BDO, Wolcen, Blue Protocol, New World etc but sometimes I'll be covering these old MMOs as a way for me to relax, have some fun with the editing and have a lot of potential content if I don't know what video I feel like making, don't take me covering old MMOs as a "state of the genre" kinda thing, this year is actually looking good and content wise there's an abundance of stuff to cover :) thanks for all the kind words on the recent videos

Of course there are a lot of us who still play Perfect World.
The majority of the player base though shifted to the Pirate server...
Where you start on level 1, kill a rabbit and become max level, then do whatever you want.
I forgot it's name though... oh, it's *Epic Perfect World*, it's almost full most of the time.
And the actual Perfect World International has a rially big player base.
You are just in the starting zones, and everyone else is either in the "New World" (grinding End-game) or doing Territory wars.
*Archosaur* is usually the place with the most players then *The Lost City*...(unlike what the name will lead you to believe...).

Hey dude. About exit lag, I'm in Thailand, in Chiang Mai (Would love to buy you a beer btw!!!) and I'm on a 500mbps fiber optic very clean connection on ethernet. I get about 260~ms with exit lag and the game disconnects me after no more than 30 mins of playtime. "The gods have disconnected you".. That doesn't happen without exit lag and it's more stable without it.
How about your experience from Thailand? interested to hear.

I have honestly spent so much time in this game. It was so huge when it came out. Made a ton of friends too, it had open PVP, great character builds, awesome classes and a HUGE map. The crafting system was pretty nice also and the mounts.... man the mounts were so good. So many good things about this game that are still valid today and personally i am really sad it did not get a remake. Also there is that one feeling of logging back in and looking at the friends list and seeing: "Last logged on 10 years ago"... still gives me chills, just like the music. PS: One of my friends got married to a girl he actually met in this game, and yes they are happy and well after more than 15 years.

This game truly brings back memories, it was the first F2P MMO i got into.
I still remember the addition of the Tideborn and the sudden forum frenzy when a random, extremely powerful mob, would suddenly appear in the coast of the Tideborn STARTING area. For whatever reason, this thing was sometimes violent [apparently it was a bug or something since he was supposed to always be calm] and would obliterate the new players who would venture out into the water. Suddenly, a ton of high level players got the idea to try and take it down and it failed for a while since he was too strong.
Good times man. Same with making a Winged Elf and having flight at lv 1 while everyone had to wait.

Most likely a world boss that would be pulled to troll newer players and not a bug. You see world bosses before did not ever deaggro you once you attacked and you could pull them across the entire map if you wanted to then log out to drop the aggro and boss would remain killing the newbies.

I love this mmo's music so much. Especially the Genesis expanion one. It was so good. The game is still really cool, but all the attention goes to the veterans and beginners rather then average players. Everything is pay to win nowadays, though the currency can be earned with a LOT of grind. The game was a lot better in the past though, less controlled economy, dungeons actually had low levels grouping to beat them rather the nowadays just have someone 1 shot it for you. I miss the 2009-2011 days of this game. I had the most fun back then.

Damn bro, I used to play this game sooo much back in the day. It was the first "real" MMO I ever played, and thus holds a special place in my heart.
I still remember running around South City for the first time completely in awe at the size of the city and all the player shops littering the streets. Granted that was back in the games' glory days when it had a huge playerbase, but it was quite something. Your FPS would just tank like crazy the second you went into the city, and you would run past the most busy streets in like 7 FPS because there was just so many player shops. I also remember some of the mounts being quite crazy and the cash shop being ridiculously overpriced.
Man it's kinda sad to see the game reverted to this kind of state. Even the PvP scene is dead now. Oh well, at least I still have Final Fantasy XIV.

I came to PWI from runescape and even though the fog/mist effect in cities was probably because of my horrible laptop, I remember flying to a city at really low level my first time, and it gave it a very mysterious vibe, suddenly coming across shops and players. The cities felt massive. I was also in awe of the graphics. Made a lot of friends and some I still keep in contact with. ^-^

I started playing this game when it was just the 3 races. I loved it. When the tb came out, I felt that's what started the decline of the game. You should have played in the 5 attacks per second cleric age, it was hard to do anything. It sucks that the classes don't have their own starting zones anymore. It's nice to see fb 19 (that's what the cultivation dungeons were called) is a solo dungeon now. You barely scratched the surface of this game. It is massive.

You do have sliders in the old character creation, it's just slightly harder to find them. You have sliders for every aspect of the character, eyes, lips, faceshape, ect. For the body sliders, you'll have to switch to the body tab and then press the button that your facecam conveniently covered up (I don't actually remember what this button says but it's always at the very bottom of the ui.) This button is also present in the eyes, face and oronasal tabs, at the very bottom of the ui, where again, your facecam covered the button in the video. x) I believe the button says something along the lines of ''Advanced options'' though. Overall great video, just wanted to point that out! PWI was revolutionary at release because of the wide range of customization they offered, more specifically, the sliders, so it's ofcourse still available in the old character creation.
Also! The graphics are different for edgerunners and gunners because they are the only characters who have the ''new graphics'' available, with better everything basically, and also, hair physics! I believe their aim in the future is to have the improved graphics applied to the entire game, though I am very out of touch with this game and it's developments so I may be completely off.

Seeing someone cover this game in 2020 brings me a lot of joy, but also some sadness. The truth is that despite the fact that it's been around for so long, PWI was essentially dead a long time ago. I have played it on and off since launch, dedicating many thousands of hours and having eight characters at max level. Originally from Heaven's Tear, I now reside on Etherblade server. I will go into excruciating detail about how the game used to be below, but first a few comments about the current state, in case anyone was curious:
Despite Archosaur seeming populated, most shops that you see aren't "players", but shop alts/mules. Some people have 3 or 4 running simultaneously, 24/7. And have done for years. The same can be said for a lot of real players that you encounter. As far as I'm aware, multi-logging is still allowed and due to the somewhat low fidelity of the game, this allows people to have all their alts logged in concurrently. The real community is a lot smaller than it appears and you tend to get to know most people quite quickly, due to there only being a handful of factions (guilds) that remain active. Despite this, they have avoided another (in my opinion) much-needed server merge in favour of cross-server interaction.
Updates are few and far between, though still a thing. We seem to get them a long time after they go live in China, and their implementation in the international version is questionable. There are still bugs that exist from launch, such as the de-sync Peon experienced, though they have fixed other issues.
Over the years, the "vision" of PWI has changed drastically in an attempt to modernise the game and keep (make?) it relevant. Leveling has been streamlined (to the degree of pointlessness), and as such, the focus now rests heavily on endgame, which is probably more convoluted than it needs to be.
The auto-cultivation isn't an original feature and, from my experience, isn't at all necessary in the leveling process. I've only ever heard of Venomancers using it to train their pets (which level independently of the character).
The newer areas of the world map consist almost entirely of questline areas, and are quite shallow compared to the mainland. There are daily quests and endgame dungeons there. It's a shame since there are already instances that are underutilised (OHT and its incarnations, Lothranis/Momagnon, etc.), some as old as the game itself, that could've received more attention and content, but they had to give the illusion of expansion which, judging by the comments, fooled some ex-players.
The endgame dungeons are all quite varied and unique, though most people don't attempt to farm them all as they can be a pain in the ass, especially those like DUP which not only require a certain mix of classes, but also quite a high gear benchmark.
Speaking of gear, endgame equipment is quite linear, there are 2-3 viable options available for endgame, and they tend to follow a set upgrade path. Grade 16, which is upgraded from farmed/crafted gear and isn't very impressive in terms of stats, but still gets the job done with proper rolls/shards/refines. Rank 9, which is scarcely achievable without dropping some serious money and buying materials off the cash shop, needs to be recast twice before it begins to outperform other options and is the most popular all-purpose endgame gear.
The newer classes come powerful out of the box, to encourage players to reroll and spend more. Duskblades are particularly egregious, but the balance between classes for the most part is quite good, even today.

Now, onto my nostalgic rambling. The first year of this game was honestly the best experience I've had with any MMO to date. GMs were present and would hold community events, and at the same time every day, used to send the server message "Mornings are vital."
Combat seems dated by today's standard, but it's honestly very chill and despite BnS being my second favourite MMO of all time, I can say with complete transparency that PWI's stationary, tab-target combat isn't all that bad. In PvP, it's actually quite intense, since you have to manage not only skills with their cooldowns, but pots/apoth, genie skills, charm ticks and ranges/distance. Having the ability to fly adds another strategic dimension to fights. Apart from that, there's the usual stealth/stunlock/debuff/weapon proc mechanics you see in most games.
The graphics were very reasonable for the time, but the open world was stunningly huge and beautiful, and traveling took time unless you were prepared to pay handsomely. There wasn't even an autopathing feature initially, you had to mark coordinates on your map and navigate there yourself. It sounds like bad design these days, but I loved the aspect of exploration which also allowed you to gain more knowledge about the game. There were three races to begin with, each with their own lands and capitals (starting areas were different also).
Unlike games today, we only had text guides written by those on the forums, and a database of items to work with. This led to a strong community aspect to PWI, as even the menus didn't offer much information. Everyone had to ask for help at some point, and imparting knowledge to people in addition to helping them with their quests really fostered some great relationships. As a Cleric, myself and others used to go out of our way to fly half way across the map to resurrect someone to save them some precious xp. It's a facet of MMOs that I miss in modern games.
Quests were abundant and ranged from personal story and spiritual cultivation, to your typical fetch and kill quests (they have since culled 90% of them) and completing them all still wouldn't be enough to guarantee a level up, so you had to supplement your questing with some grinding or events. Each quest had a tale behind it, the amount of text included was sometimes overwhelming, but it was impressive nonetheless. Every 10 or so levels, starting at level 19, every player got their FB or "Fu Ben" (instance) quest, which required a party to complete. Alongside your FB, you also received tabs that let you activate additional one-time quests for yourself and your party that yielded rewards for everyone, so helping out was always rewarded. Clearing your FB was usually a pretty big milestone as it ushered in the next stage of your spiritual cultivation, which allowed you to learn newer and stronger skills. It was a good marker of progression as well as a fun challenge with the chance of good drops like molds.
Gear was a mixed bag also, which made it all the more interesting. 1-3 star gear was either found from monster drops or crafted, they'd have random additional rolls and tended to be the weakest choices. Some more prominent quests also rewarded one-off equips that were sometimes very good and worth keeping. Then there were molds, like I mentioned a moment ago. They would essentially act as the "blueprint" for the gear, and would yield a high quality piece of gear when crafted at the forges with some materials, which tended to have set stats with a parameter, so each piece wasn't all the same. Then there was gear from dungeons such as Twilight Temple, Forgotten Frostlands or Lunar Glade, which offered the player gear progression through a crafting upgrade path. For example, you'd have to farm materials from different acts of Twilight Temple, and the gear (weapons especially) would fork at certain levels, offering you the chance to craft a weapon with stats that were complimentary to your class build. There were also event rewards that made participating worthwhile.
Dungeons were unique and entertaining, "trash mobs" weren't really a thing, even with a proper party composition some groups were hard to tackle and required luring properly. Bosses all had different mechanics, and some were completely optional. Some dungeons would take multiple hours to clear completely, so players tended to make a bee-line for the bosses which dropped the mats they needed, then reset it.
Once a player got to level 89, their spiritual cultivation split between sage and demon (good and evil), which permitted the use of skillbooks that upgraded your skills and activated additional effects. The choice between sage and demon was always a hot topic on the forums, as both tended to be viable but catered to different play styles. As a general rule, Sage effects were lesser, but constant. Demon effects were greater, but with a chance to proc.
The music in this game, as many commenters here have pointed out, was phenomenal and still manages to cause the hairs on my arm to stand on end when I listen to it.
There was a cash shop, but it only had a handful of convenience items and cosmetics. Then, with the first anniversary, they introduced gambling packs which contained strong gear and items that were unobtainable by normal means. Thus ushered in the Age of P2W.
Normally, this is where the story would end, but PWI was dealt another blow to its integrity. The Archer forum in particular was full of theorycrafters and number crunchers, who took note of one stat -- Attacks Per Second (APS) -- and hypothesized that if you stacked enough gear with that stat, and equipped a weapon that had a naturally fast attack speed, your character would be able to auto attack multiple times per second. Thanks to some gear min-maxing, it was found that the game capped at 5 APS and that it was achievable rather easily, with a bit of help from the cash shop. Since arcane classes never used auto attacks, Strength-based classes skyrocketed in power and utility, especially those that could receive the "Bloodpaint" buff from Assassins, which returned a percentage of your melee damage as healing, allowing players to break off from the holy trinity and solo practically anything, assuming their gear was good enough.
Furthermore, there was a combat mechanic called "chi", which you gained passively through auto attack or skill use. Each time it reached 100, you'd receive a "spark". Some of the more powerful skills required sparks to cast, which made them harder to spam. One such skill was received at level 89 with the Sage/Demon cultivation that consumed 3 sparks, made you invulnerable for 3 seconds and increased your attack (and APS if Demon) for roughly 15 seconds. This skill was intended to be used as a burst opportunity, but thanks to the wonders of 5 APS, you could maintain it permanently, as long as you kept attacking to gain chi. As you can imagine, this advent trivialised PvE, making any content soloable (reference to the legendary cheezdude who soloed the world boss Harpy Wraith) and wrecked havoc on PvP. Balance was thrown completely out the window.. of a penthouse.. in a skyscraper.. on a cliff.. overlooking the Mariana Trench. Most magic classes rerolled a BM/Sin/Archer to keep up. Others quit entirely due to the cost of obtaining this gear, which was not insignificant.
Despite this being a huge oversight (conspiracy theorists amongst us would say that it was intentional), 5 APS remained in the game for many years, until it was finally nerfed. Normally, this would be cause for celebration, but by then it was too late, and Rank 9 gear filled the void. The full set cost upwards of 1500 dollars and that was before shards and refines.

      @nanashivii9237 4 ปีที่แล้ว

On top of this, Perfect World Entertainment (the company that published PWI in the west) decided that it would be a great idea to fire their great community team and cut their management of the game down to a skeleton crew, likely only to rifle through cash shop promotions and perform maintenance. They also introduced Arc in later years, which is a Steam-esque client for all of the PWE games. In doing so, they got rid of the once vibrant forums that were a wealth of beneficial information. These choices, plus the unhealthy levels of greed present in the cash shop, resulted in a rapid decline in the player base. All in all, this game has been through a lot, and while some part of me is surprised that it's still around, it's not what it used to be. In fact, I'd go so far as to call it basically just the cold, reanimated corpse of a game I once loved. And while you may think that's quite a damning indictment of PWI, I still log in from time to time to check in on my faction and old friends, and to participate in Nation Wars when I get the urge. I've played every major (and many obscure) MMO released since and none have come at all close to emulating the feelings of unbridled joy that I had while playing PWI.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

You had to find creative ways of sneaking into certain areas so high level players didn't nuke you out of existence.

Well, I'm glad I put "perfect world City of Lost gameplay" into the YT search engine :D I played this from 2009 to 2013. I started just after Barbs and Venos were added via expansion, picked a Blademaster for my first (his name was Merovingian) and found the game confusing, hard, and endearing all at once. The music was lovely, though. I made a tonne of friends and promptly lost most when they merged the three West servers into Archosaur. Then, made a tonne more. It was a really life-changing experience. Too bad things got too expensive and droves of people started to quit.

I miss this game so much. I remember playing this when it first came out in my country (Philippines). There were so many players, the community was great and just everything about it was amazing. It wasn't my first mmorpg but I literally spent more than a thousand hours playing this. I made really good friends in this game. I want to play it again but seeing that it is now pay to win is kinda disappointing.

I remember playing this game in elementary school back with my friend when I was like 7 in 2009. This game is super nostalgic for me, especially because that friend moved out of state and we are no longer in contact with each other. I didn't understand how to play pretty much and we would just fly around the super high-level areas and generally fuck around.
This is the game that got me into multiplayer video games, and I am sad it's no longer what it was, but I am happy for the memories I have of it.

I played this game from 2008-2011, after it started getting really heavy p2w I moved to private servers. From my experience in the private servers its a really close knit community and used to be extremely competitive before I quit in late 2018. I used to dump thousands of hours into it. Was definitely clunky but I love it so much.

As someone who has played this game from 2008 when it came out in the international version to 2016, I can tell you that there have been a lot of changes made in all this time. The game WAS very good at some point. Sure, you are right. The animations are not that impressive, but most the fun back then came from playing in groups. It had an amazing community back then. Then Perfect World entertainment had to ruin it and make the game pay to win. Literally. Getting the BASE set of the best gear in the game is stuff you can only get if you dish out around 1.7k of ingame currency, or farm for months on end. I did that and it took me 6 month... just to get a bloody ring and daggers. In their BASE form. If I had wanted the 3rd reforge version... it would have taken me years more if I didn't wanna dish out the money. And even though I didn't have the best possible gear, I still kicked the asses of so many credit card warriors.
I basically only left when my Audiobook TH-cam channel took off a little and because the devs ACTUALLY had the AUDACITY to put content in the game that basically either requires you to have the overpriced cash shop gear, OR to play with a group of max refined free gear people, killing one mob at a time because every single mob (Not bosses, NORMAL MOBS!) will hit you as hard as some of the bosses in the dungeons you need to run to farm materials for your free gear. And then you have to kill like 100 of these mobs, taking into account that your group will have to heal up after every single fight cause your healer will be either oom or simply dead cause the areas these mobs are in are swarming with them. Like literally. They sometimes don't even stand 3 feet apart and so pulling only ONE out of that group to kill it for a quest is a skill in and off itself. (Can be done with certain genie or Venomancer skills, but damn it's cumbersome)
So yeah... As someone who has played the game to the point where I was in the top 10 PvP ratings ACROSS all servers, (Even though I never sought out PvP. PPL only ever tried to kill me and were surprised that they got their but kicked if they didn't 1 shot me) I can tell you that what you see today is sadly only a shell of the game that it used to be. Every race used to have their own unique starting are for starters. Every race, to a certain point, had a unique questline where you would learn about the race and why they are fighting the wraith and so on and so forth. Now? Usually you don't even DO quests anymore. You just create a new charakter, kill mobs until you are around level 60, join a noob guild, participate in a few power level runs, then farm standart gear with your guild and then look for a better one once you are max level and have all your cultivation quests done. There is not much more to it.

    • @TheMagnus156
      @TheMagnus156 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's sad to hear actually, seems like the game got even more grindy. Man I have such great childhood memories of this game. I used to play I think in Korean version of the game as a cleric before even the PWI came out. Then moved on to PWI as a tank.
I remember power leveling to highest levels with some dudes was really fun when the game came out and when the new servers came out. But the griding was pretty damn bad in this and even back then the game was really p2w. I think you could upgrade your gear with some gems what were incredibly p2w and low chance for high level gear. Also I think mp and hp charms what were a must have, costed money, so you needed to grind for it or buy it for real money.
The territory wars were really the most fun things in the game but they made some really bad changes for them what made me and a lot of people actually Quit. I remember guilds used to get a huge amount of money for a territory, what was used to buy gear for people and it made the game way less grindy and way more fun. The territory wars used to be so high stakes, even owning 1 territory with your guild made you have decent money and it was pretty impossible for the largest guilds to defend all their territories. Then I think they changed it so you pretty much didn't get anything from the territory wars and they became totally useless things in the game unfortunately.

I remember this game! I was about 11 or 12 when I got to play it in the UK. Played it for hours on end with a close friend of mine (who I sadly no longer see). Very fond memories of this game, it was absolutely amazing for a good few years. Most distinct and fondest memory is when an alert came to everyone on the server saying an NPC Village was being attacked. Got there and there was a metric tonne of people fighting the enemy NPCs and protecting the village. Whole group of us just kinda came together to defend the village during that timed event. All different levels and classes. It was awesome! Sad to see it isn't the same as it once was.

Im still playing this MMO after 12 years, on and off: they game is free of course, but the endgame gear its insanely expensive, i means, i heard of people that spent more that 5000 US dollars trying to get the R9rr full armor. Also, fashion, mounts, unique items are insanely expensive as well and you have to relies on packs, and to buy thousands of packs for to get the chance to get a rare item

SO there was this guy on Santuary (Before the merge) who was, from what I was told, CEO of Singapore waterworld or seaworld or something. He'd spend absolutely insane amounts of money, having one of each class at 103+, all sitting in either base r9 (working towards r9r3) with some already at full +12 r9r3, with either +10 vit stones, or the +2 def stones. They all had either the top tier Tome, or the one just below it, and at least a few had the full set of the best cards. On one sale I heard he spent $30k USD. The dude never PvP'd, and would just multibox half his characters through dailies EVERY SINGLE DAY, and farm whatever exp grinds there were to keep levelling.

PW was one of the first mmos that I played (not THE first, but one of the first). It had some of the best spell casting animations at the time, which is one of the things that I still remember from when I played, despite having left the game a while back.
