Friendly Reminder: KOTOR references the Yuuzhan Vong in one the conversations with Canderous. He talks about an asteroid that shot back at him when he and several Mandalorians were hunting pirates on the edge of the Rim.

If I remember correctly, he said he saw an "asteroid-fighter" thing which was most definitely the coral skipper starfighter of the Vongs with one purpose at hand, spying. It's fascinating they had an entire espionage system thousands of years before their galactic invasion, I guess they really needed survey of all the empires, star systems, technological development etc of the galaxy.

World Ships..... Death Star.... Intercept them before they can disperse.... No Vong. Their gravity drive is impressive, but it would take a dead on shot to gobble the Death Star beam and then you'd have an ACTUAL blackhole if it did, that would go onto obliterate the world ship in any case. One small enough that it would radiate like a star and pass right through the world ship's walls like they were not there... Before exploding... Dat be physics babe!

They would have called it the Nova Colossus or the Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose. They would have spent billions of credits, employed thousands of contractors and subcontractors, and equipped it with the latest in death-dealing technology. And you know what would have happened? It wouldn't have worked. They'd forget to bolt down a metal plate over an access hatch leading to the main reactors, or some other mistake, and a hotshot enemy pilot would drop a bomb down there and blow the whole thing up. 2:10 I think that there was at least a decent amount of truth to Palpatine's vocalised intentions of preventing the Outbound Flight encountering the Yuuzhan Vong, even if it was only to prevent them from disrupting his plan. The novel takes place in 27 BBY so if the Vong had come across the Outbound Flight and decided to immediately invade the main galaxy then Palpatine's plans for manipulating the Clone Wars would be ripped to shreds as - aside from the Jedi - there'd be very little to stop the Vong's advance, especially as the Clone Army was still years away from being able to deploy the first generations of troopers. On top of that, there's uncertainty of how the Senate would respond but due to the limitations of the Ruusan Reformation that were still in effect (mainly the lack of a galactic army) then the Vong would probably advance further than they did against the New Republic, unless Palpatine ordered groups like the Trade Federation and any other Separatist backers Dooku had gathered by that point to mass produce Battle Droids in the millions or billions to stop the advance.

  • @lynngreen7978
    @lynngreen7978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've said it before, and I'll say it now. Palpatine had no idea of the Vong. Because, if he *imagined* the existence of an external threat, he would have used it.
He would have justified every loss of freedom, every massacre, as necessary to "protect the lives of your children". "Those Terrorists, that call themselves the 'Rebel Alliance' destroyed the Peace Moon*, the Galaxies' only hope of surviving the coming threat. If you know anything about these terrorists, report them to your local garrison. They are actively aiding the end of our way of life."
*Palps would also probably blame them for Alderaan.

It makes sense for Palpatine to build super weapons and consolidate power to deal with a threat to his power. As Machiavelli noted small numbers of powerful people just below you makes an overthrow more likely. When you have thousands of governors who need a least a few hundred to resist to hope to win and only one betrayal to doom them it is far less likely to happen than if you only need 4 or 5 guys to rebel to have a chance. A centralized command is best for dealing with a powerful enemy. Not to protect the galaxy, but to deal with a threat to his own power. And after the war Palpatine would simply find excuses to murder anyone who might become a threat until it once more take a large group plan an overthrow.

  • @AuthorsAgony

It would be within Palpatine's character to at least somewhat build up an army/fleet to counter the Yuuzhan Vong. He can't rule over an empire of ashes, so it would be an act of self preservation of his power.

  • @wuebboltc
    @wuebboltc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Palpatine was simply too much of a sociopath to care about protecting the galaxy from the Vong. Best case scenario: he devastates the Vong to keep them from playing with what he thinks are his toys -- because the galaxy belongs to him, and him alone. Oh, he'd certainly want people to THINK he had their wellbeing in mind, but in reality, as far as Palpatine is concerned, power isn't a means to an end -- it's an end in itself.

He doesn't have to save the galaxy through altruism, but because a ruler has to have something to rule. And the Vong perhaps were coming 'too early' and may have disrupted his plans for his own extra-galactic excursions.

I still believe the theory. The vong would've not only destroyed and assimilated all life but would have extinguished the force in the galaxy before moving on to the next. They would've taken everything from him. Ultimately not a benevolent motion, but it seems more likely he'd do anything to stop them. You didn't really need dozens of death stars and ssd's to control the galaxy, it'd be more manageable with hundreds of thousands of victory destroyers.

People tend to misinterpret nuance for complexity. And a whole lot of other things for complexity. Palpatine was a complex man, of wheels within wheels, like any sadistic dictator. But his goals were simple.

Clear, simple goals; great tangling webs of means.

As a weapon of war, the Death Star is hilariously overbuilt. You don't need a 160km sphere to blow up a planet; an orbital bombardment from a handful of capital ships would accomplish the same thing. Palps could have build a thousand Star Destroyers, probably more, with the resources he put into the Death Star
As a weapon of terror, though, that excess actually works in its favor. "If the Empire can build a 160km sphere just for shits and giggles, there's nothing that can possible stand in its way!"

I've heard the argument for lazy writing, but -- on the other hand -- not everything is complicated; in-context, I think the "black hole of the Force" explanation makes the most sense.

A conqueror protecting their spoils of war is a completely normal thing to do. Palpatine would most certainly be protecting the Star Wars galaxy, but it wouldn't be out of kindheartedness. I think you could still have a "good guy Palpatine" scenario while also having him weasel his way in to an autocratic position, as the republic _was_ corrupt, so a "good guy" doing that is not unbelievable, but how he would go about doing it, and his actions after achieving power would be very different.

I think Palpatine would have felt threatened by the Vong because they were disconnected from the force, and he'd have no way to detect and let alone control them through the force. Even if his plan was to defend the Galaxy from the Vong, his motives would still be selfish and for the sake of self-preservation. Still, I would have preferred it if the protection of the galaxy was his main motivation, and everything he did was for a 'greater good', because it would have added greater depth to his character instead of just leaving him as a one dimensional bad guy.

I don't think the two are exclusive.
1: He was evil and wanted power.
2: If the Vong took him out he would not care about anyone else.
3: If he wanted to take other galaxies or all of the universe he would first need to defeat the Vong.
4: He would have let the Vong fester as long as it would benefit him, then he would move to wipe them out. and probably use it as justification to invade the Vong Galaxy.
5: the Death Stars and Fleets can, and are multi-purpose. Just because they build his power, they were also there to help him keep his power, even against the Vong.
So he knew the Vong were a threat, and would have stopped them, not as so good move, but as anything else he did, to keep and even build more power. The Vong are not a Why he did it answer, they are just another cog.

What if Palpatines visions of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion was the determining factor in him turning to the dark side in the first place? Such as Anakin seeing Padme die before seeking out a way to change what he saw in his vision, and inevitably finding the darkside and losing his path of saving Padme. Palpatine seeking the power to stop the invasion he saw in a vision of the future, and then falling to the darkside and seeking only power instead of his goal.

Though Palpatine isn’t nuanced as you put it, allow me to put a counterargument. Though Palpatine did want his empire to be for him and him alone, he was never foolish in his endeavors leading up to the formation of the Empire. Consolidation of further power was definitely on his agenda the entire time, however he would also more than likely prepare for any potential threats. In essence, Palpatine would most likely have built his military force both for his benefit and as a semi-defensive measure against the Yuuzang Vong. He was aware of them and would most likely blow them to smithereens the moment he figured out where they were. Other than that power and immortality were his only goals. What I am trying to say is that I can believe the theory that the Vong got Palpatine’s attention in some small way but I doubt he made every single decision to counter the Vong.

I'm afraid that the rest of you _simply_ have too _small_ of a mindset to contemplate the measures that will be required. Clarity of vision, strength of power, promptness of speed, and decisiveness of commitment shall be required in equal measure, all of which I comprehend in full."
To view himself as the only possible savior of the galaxy is precisely the sort of thing that would tempt the ego of Palpatine.
Whether he would be correct in his assessment... well, the ego rarely bows to truth.

The Mon Calamari ships are better at providing cover while the Imperial designs are generally better at throwing a lot of fire power on a target so I'd use both kinds in a fleet.
Also employ droids when ever possible just to anger the Vong and make them mess up their tactics or even squander their forces in suicide attacks.

As some others have pointed out I think you are slicing this issue just very slightly off, most of these arguments could be made the other way. He didn't do it because he cared, he did it because he felt he needed the weapon. He also didn't build the entire warmachine to deal with that one threat, but think of it this way, he could've easily demilitarized the galaxy and gone back to ruling with ancient ways and sith magic, but if he did that the galaxy would be less able to defend itself. He chose these strategies and probably saw the death star and fleets as multipurpose, but he had to have them to defend.
Just like a country building thousands of nukes that would effectively destroy the biosphere, no caring or change of motivations is required so scorched earth isn't relevant and who knows why he sacrificed that fleet, there could be a lot of reasons to get rid of it. For me its not about giving Palpatine a virtuous side, its about not taking him for a fool and respecting his skills at seeing the future and playing the game, something only the Skywalkers were able to subvert. If I sit down to play a strategy war game and know full well about an endgame threat, and I plan for it, then someone comes along and says I didn't build those units for the endgame threat because I only cared about winning the game/being dominant/being evil, that doesn't make any sense to me.

You know the whole thing of not having a successor and the Dark Side being the lynchpin in why the GE fell kinda falls flat, when you have Thrawn who basically boosted morale back to pre-Endor levels among Imperial forces and nearly brought down the New Republic. Someone like Thrawn could have easily just taken successor of the Empire, they just had to get their shit together and not try to kill one another.
Sure in the short term without those things from Palps, yeah the Empire would have fallen. But the Empire never truly fell, it merely just splintered off and then got back together and reformed, it just took a hell of a lot of time for everyone to get their act together. Thus we get the Imperial Remnant and then much later on the Fel Empire.
