I Tested 3 Lawn Leveling Rakes (One of Them was Hilariously Bad)

  • Do YOU plan on Leveling your Lawn???
In this video we test out some of the most popular Lawn Leveling Rakes on the market.
The 3 contenders are the Ryan Knorr Level Lawn , The R & R Products Lawn Leveler and The Rassenrakel. A few months ago I tested the cheapest Lawn Leveling Rake on Amazon but this time we are trying out some of the most premium leveling rakes on the market currently just in time for lawn renovation season.
The Ryan Knorr Lawn Level is made by Landzie and features a 36in wide level lawn head and a 72in handle. They claim it is powered coated but as you will see in the video it is very clearly not. This was by far the worst quality rake out of the 3 rakes we tested. It feels cheap, flimsy and does not handle smoothly in the lawn. The poor build quality, loose handle and unknown place of origin make it a hard pass especially for its price tag.
The second rake we tested was the R & R products rake. We contacted R & R directly to find out where their lawn leveler was made and they told us the head was made in America and their handle was “imported”. There are many things we love about this rake including the galvanized solid steel head which is heavy and very durable. Another awesome feature about this lawn lute is the handle. It features an extra long handle that makes long deep passes possible when leveling which can cut down the amount of work involved and lead to a much more flat lawn.
The last lawn leveling rake we tested was the German made Rassenrakel. This leveling Rake is the Mercedes Benz of Lawn Leveling Rakes. It is made from high quality stainless steel and features an interchangeable head system that allows you to adapt any handle you prefer to use such as fiberglass, wood, telescoping etc. The head of this rake is 32in but features a much deeper head than I’ve ever seen a leveling rake have which ultimately makes it a much more smooth experience when stroking in back and forth. Rakes that are extra wide tend to chatter back and forth when leveling but this lawn leveling rake eliminates the chatter with its strategic design.

Thanks for taking your time and allowing us the opportunity to see and hear how things work. Not a lot of people will spend over $100 dollars on a rake. Especially one that may only be used a few times a year. That being said, I’m hoping to level my turf next season for the first time. I would have loved to do it this season but couldn’t bring myself to spend over $300 to have sand delivered to my house.

My dad and I put an in-ground sprinkler system at my grandma's house and leveled the dirt back as much as we could with regular rakes since she gave us a pretty tight budget to work with. I could use the rake to finally level it out correctly and stop scalping sections of the yard from the ruts.

Doing some serious leveling this fall and this was super helpful! I’ve purchased and bought a couple dozen landscape rakes for baseball fields, and for this kind of work any poles that have to be connected will guaranteed weaken and fail in a short time.

Funny how "Rasenrakel" is pronounced in USA 😅 If you take a closer look, you'll see that it's made of one solid sheet of metal with edges gently bent (so actually no edges at all). That is why it glides so easily in spite of its weight and that is why it makes little to no damage to the grass blades when top dressing. The open top is there to collect the larger pieces of wood (when using compost etc.) which otherwise stay "floating" on the grass, but it's useless when using pure sand. You can fill it with silicone if you always use just sand, but it's actually a usefull feature.
    Greatings from Austria!

I have caught the yard care bug this year. Getting ready to aerate and overseed this fall. I have several low spots where trees were cut out. I’m going to try to fill those with some sand and topsoil before I seed but it would be really nice to be able to sand level those spots once the new grass comes back in the spring and get them truly flat so I can better enjoy the mow.

I spent 2020 watching lawn care/renovation videos. Got a lot of great information from videos like these (watching yourself, Ryan Knorr, Connor Ward, Allyn Haynes, Ginga the Lawn Ninja, to name a few.) I went out and got the Sun Joe dethatcher. I got the Tenacity. I got the top shelf seed from Seed Superstore. Rented a professional aerator. I was planning on a Spring seeding, but temperatures were all over the place. On one Sunday it hit a record high. The following Sunday? Snow! Then near 100F since. Pushed seeding off until this fall. Sprayed 1st round of Glyphosate last week, then 2 days later, the city enacts watering restrictions. My seed isn't down yet, so I can't get the exemption. I was planning on making a DIY lawn level tool, but this would really up my game. Crossing my fingers...I really need a win!

Gearing up for a spring lawn overhaul and watching a lot of your videos. These reviews are extremely helpful. Your videos are not way too long like many of the others I've checked out. They're pretty to the point and just entertaining enough without a ton of extra fluff, weird editing, outtakes etc. . You also seem like a genuine, laid back guy I'd be friends with. I'm renting my house but I still take my lawn care seriously. So, I'm looking at the supplies I need to get this done and your videos have helped tremendously with that. It's unfortunate the Ryan Knorr product doesn't match the quality of his videos.

Thank you for the review. recently I used Ryan's rake and also a smaller one from amazon (cheaper and much heavier than Ryan's). I did notice that the one from Amazon worked much better on my lawn. My grass was a bit too long to smoothly rake sand/soil in, so they both got stuck and flipped upwards while pulling them towards myself. although, still my Amazon one performed better. I am a fan of both Ryan and yourself :) I appreciate your honest review.

My self propelled lawn mower bounces along like it's on a gravel road. Nice quick comparison George. I was happy to see that you asked the manufacturers where they were made as that was my comment on your cheapest rake video. Allyn Hane talked about the country of origin in his sprayer video as well and gave a shout out to American manufacturers to reach out to him with an alternative to China manufacturing all the sprayer components. I enjoy both of your content so I hope Ryan can get past a bad review and look at it more as an opportunity to make his product better because that’s what an entrepreneur would do but I do see where it might sting a little more being called “hilariously bad.” Anyways good stuff and look forward to both of your next videos.

I’ve been looking at leveling takes. Think I’ll go with the R&R (unless I can get that free one lol). I just recently purchased a new home and have about 4 acres of grass that I mow and it has a lot of holes, ruts, and hard compacted areas that collect water. I’ve been trying to figure out how I want to tackle this large of an area. And I think it’s going to be a combination of dragging a weighted pallet for an overall leveling and then breaking it up into small sections and using a leveling rake. My reason for leveling is primarily the bumpy ride, I’ve already started filling in the holes as I hit them with the mower. Secondary will be the more uniform looking lawn. As always thanks for an informative video, I was looking at leveling rakes on Amazon and none of them were really confidence inspiring so I haven’t pulled the trigger. But the R&R ticks all the boxes.

I bought Ryan Knorr 's rake since I was able to get it for $99. I've used it for 12 yards of top soil, so I've definitely put it to good use. I also dislike that the debris can collect at the top (but I understand how it can be useful) -- it just gets more debris on pavement when you aren't worried about collecting pebbles etc. during a big lawn reno. Secondly, the only thing I really can't stand is how it flips up/down. It has happened too often and then I have to take a landscape rake to spread the dirt out more (this is just more time consuming in my opinion). Overall it definitely helps and gets the job done. Like any product, it could use a few improvements but it was a good investment and has saved me a lot of time.

I’m leveling my turf in two phases.
Spring where I started almost as new. Scalped the lawn, put down 12 yards of loam and hand leveled using a DIY drag and a push broom.
I couldn’t find a good rake. Flirted with the Ryan Knorr rake but just didn’t pull the trigger.
Finished off with a full contractor’s bag of Johnathan Green black beauty. The lawn is soft and full with a few bare spots. I’ll handle all of that in the fall when I will try to level with sand!

I don't know about the different grass types in the south, or your grass type, but allowing your grass to grow longer helps keep moisture in. I leave mine around 3.5 to four inches. My neighbors cut quite short. Their yards are noticeably light and patches of brown. Mine is a deep green basically year round. Mowing often also helps, providing you don't cut off more than 30 percent of the blade. By mowing often you don't risk cutting too much of that blade and it helps thicken it as well. I realize drought conditions make things difficult, but with a longer lawn, you don't have to water like crazy.

I do admire German engineering and machining, the rake I have has the opening on the top and it can be annoying at times to keep shaking the dirt out of it, but it works perfectly. Amazing you called out the failure point for the Landzie/Ryan Knorr rake. I used mine for the first time today, and it broke after 3 minutes! The silver screw that is supposed to be attached to the top handle broke off inside the bottom handle.
    100% pure junk.

Hey the same think happened to me with the Ryan Knorr rake. I'm not out to bash Ryan....but I have to say I am very disappointed in the construction of this handle.

    Hello,
I am trying to make a final decision on a leveling rake and I was wondering if the R & R Rake is still your go to or has the Rasenrakel Rake taken over the top spot?
Thank you for the content that you provide us.

i have the standard golf 36" rake (since it's made in my state of iowa) and overall, it is pretty good. the head is heavy and it glided like butter on my renovation last year. the handle is long and wooden, which i think adds some weight to the head as well. the only small issue i have is the handle is attached to the head with a bolt and a nut that sometimes comes loose. I plan to do some level at my new property this weekend so i will put on a bit of loctite just to hold it in place

Grant! good to see you bro!
never tried the standard golf but heard great things, maybe look into getting some nylon washers to secure the nuts. i wouldn't locktight the head incase you need to do some maintenance on it

I just bought the standard golf 30”. So far so good. I like the heavy wood handle too.
