I think one reason it could be called “Toothpaste” is that it’s meant to sound like you have a bad taste in your mouth (because of the guilt and regret for what you’ve done) and need to wash it out
@@williamle1884 Pretty much as that quote says, toothpaste is something commonly associated with habit in general. It's what you should do after every meal (3 times a day), and was historically something that big companies purposefully and consciously had to "teach" us to do. In the book "The Power of Habit", it talks about how next to no one used to brush their teeth, before they figured out all they had to do was to make the toothpaste taste fresh, like mint. Which gives us the feeling our mouth is clean, despite being no different from flavorless toothpaste when it comes to cleaning properties. What happens is that if we have a reward stimuli (the taste of fresh mint), our reward brain mechanisms and chemicals are released. As far as the theme of No More Heroes as a franchise goes, you could relate it to Travis habitual violence and killing, as some "everyday" thing. The same way video-games and movies use violence as an habitual inconsequential thing. The game talked about the banalization of violence in media since the beginning. The sad and monotone music just brings home that he's getting sick of it.
I really like this song, especially when it plays through Alice's level. It makes you think how Travis must be reflecting on all the ranked assassins he's been killing, even the ones he wanted to live on.

I used to listen to this all the time in high school- Alice was my favorite character in the series, and her walkup song always made me feel calm even during my worst days. It's been eight years since then, I only rediscovered it when I was talking about NMH with my husband-to-be. As soon as it started playing, I was sent back in time and was left bawling my eyes out, thinking about how far I've come since those days. I don't really have a point to make, just wanted to leave my own mark on something that I never realised left such an impact on me until now.
A song with no lyrics but speaks many words. A song that you need to listen to as you walk down a street in the rain to understand the emotion and feelings put into it. You walk and you think, thats what this song is. Still an amazing piece of music and underrated in my opinion.
"Much has changed in Santa destroy, where the bodies of angels litter the streets. Giant corporations rampant city development; here the strong devour weak, the weak kneel the strong an eternal and fruitless battle for power. One man rages against this bloody cycle to determined to become the ultimate assassin, he draw his beam he has this unreasonable vow to keep. This is Travis touchdowns desperate struggle"
I remember reading a comment on this song, many many years ago. It was about the title of the song, "Toothpaste". Kinda nonsensical when taken at face value, I mean, why would such a melancholic, atmospheric song that plays in a very bittersweet moment of the game be named Toothpaste? The commenter mused over this, and reached the conclusion that maybe it's because toothpaste always leaves a very bitter taste in you mouth when you eat something sweet right after brushing your teeth. I don't exactly remember the train of thought of that comment, but it was something about the killings being a sweet adrenaline rush for Travis up until this point. He relished in the fights, he enjoyed them, he even named his special moves after sweet desserts like Strawberry Shortcake and such. But then he had to come to terms with the reality of what he was doing, and fighting Alice was a reality check for him. The apartment complex where she resides, filled to the brim with people willing to fight to the death to emulate him and an enormous picture of Travis' face in one of the buildings, like a monument to his "greatness". The sweet flavor of death was replaced with a bitter melancholy after killing Alice, maybe because Travis realized he was in too deep and that scared him. After playing the rest of the games in the series I realize that maybe Travis had a bit of a revelation during that fight, that he truly is a really shitty person and that his legacy was one of death and perversion, and that is why he ran away for many years after completing his quest for revenge. A lot of people say that NMH2 writing was bad or that it detracted from the first game, but I really don't think that is the case. Maybe it's because I have very fond memories of this game, maybe it's because for some reason, this one song resonates with a very deep part of me. I can close my eyes and picture myself walking on one of those empty streets, with litter on the floor and a sunset on the horizon. I can see the orange light of the sun on the building's walls, and feel the still breeze, not cold nor hot, but lukewarm enough to make you feel comfortable in whatever you're wearing. I can see myself getting lost in the maze of stairs, fences and corners with no destination in mind. I can hear the faint sound of people on their homes, dogs barking, cars passing by close enough to be heard, but far enough to be unreachable. I guess all I'm trying to say is.... This song is very special to me, and so is this game. I love No More Heroes.
Came here listening to the soundtrack before playing the game, which i have done now and felt it was better than the original because of the story and beautiful cutscenes
The title of this song is genius imo. I can't really describe this song well other than how it makes me feel how I feel in the morning and night when I brush my teeth. Usually when I am brushing my teeth during the night, I tend to look back on the events of the day because brushing my teeth is such a mundane task. Ngl my mind is blank because I am unsure how to put this into words. All I can say is that I really like the title of this song and I am probably looking too deep into it.
I don't know why I've kept coming back to this track lately, but there's something about this somber melody that just keeps captivating me more and more on each repeat listen.
I played nmh2 when it came out, and I remember listening to this song around that time. Then I forgot about it for years. But recently I played the pc port and came looking for the song again. The fact that this upload is 12 years old means it's most likely the same one listened to back then. That gives me a sort of weird feeling, to add to the feelings this song already gives everyone.
Staring out at that time of day, where the sun kisses and embraces the horizon. The light stretches the shadows, and the black waves of stars creep like a tide across the sky behind to kiss the orange beach before. I care not of the darkness behind me. For the warmth and the light is before me, not behind. Summer ends with the day, but I hold its final warmth to my breast and carry it home, trying to return life into the dying twilight as the warmth fades slow from my still beating heart...
This song... every time I hear it I remember about a girl I loved so much. She liked Suda51 games and NMH specifically. After she tried doing something really stupid to herself without even telling me, I was devastated but I still wanted to support her. But in her misunderstanding she abandoned me... I hope she's okay. I'll never stop loving you, Slashermedia
Love this track a lot, this whole games soundtrack is good, I play both this and Sleepy House Over Yonder when I walk alone into the sunset, song speaks so many words with no lyrics.
Aw come on, man. I felt sadness in your voice when you had to kill those two, as well the previous tragic assassins. You got a good heart Travis, but you really like to be totally fucking awesome!
I'd like to see a No More Heroes game where you play as Alice or Margret or maybe even both. Up until Travis takes them down. Would be anticlimactic but would be amazing.
Dante199006 To be honest, I wouldn't like to see that at all. They might be super gimmicky and weird to play as (like Shinobu) and playing as Shinobu was generally an awful experience for me. Playing as Henry was pretty rad and hype, but Shinobu just felt like trying to sleep with a wet blanket. While it would be interesting to see their stories and why they're contesting the UAA ranks, playing as them, not so much. Maybe a better medium for such a story would be as a manga or comic?
+Dante199006 Another thing that would partially ruin the idea is "prequel syndrome". If an event say were to happen where someone were to attempt to kill them to challenge their rank, we would know how it goes getting rid of tension because we would know how it all ultimately ends.
+Jesse Pinkman I bet for Ryuji, just another guy like Travis that murders to reach his goal and escape his misery. Also, the way both meet each other the first time looks like they already knew how their battle was gonna be, which makes me think that maybe they've met somehow in the 3 years timeskip between nmh and nmh2
