What I find most investing is how while Margarete is calling out and absolutely verbally annihilating Travis, she herself is not devoid of these faults. Her attire is very formal with how little it reveals and its colouring, her weapon and persona based on it is one of the Grim Reaper, an icon for inevitable and almighty death, an image that is often even portrayed as noble and regal, something she emulates by taking from mythology and greek phrases. However the lyrics are brash, insulting and petty.

Maru composed this song. He received an order for this song from GhM. He was given an illustration by Yusuke Kozaki and a little Margaret's profile. Based on that information, he expanded his image and composed. The first version had no vocals. Because he doesn't know that this song needs vocals. He wasn't allowed to read the NMH2 scenario. The NMH2 scenario was confidential. Only some powers were allowed to read the scenario. The first version of this song, composed by Maru, had a loud electric guitar sound. And it was left unattended for months. As the US version of NMH2 was approaching its deadline, assistant director Ichiki realized that the song needed vocals. But the project didn't have the time or budget to write a new song anymore. Therefore, the lyrics were written according to the melody of the first version. The lyrics were written by a man who was an employee of GHM. He was mentally ill and thought of SUDA 51 as an irreverent person. That kind of thought was mixed in with the lyrics. He wrote the lyrics in Japanese. The translator translated almost exactly. However, "irreverent person" has changed to "Philistine". Ordinary Japanese do not know the word "Philistine". The translator did a good job. GHM didn't have the budget anymore, so the publisher had to find a vocalist to sing this song. It had to be a girl like Jane Birkin or Kahimi Karie. But he couldn't find such a Lolita. He sought out Nadia Gifford, who lives in Japan. She was chosen because she was a native English speaker. She wasn't a Lolita voice. However, she was good at singing, so the result was good. Her mother was more of a problem than Nadia. The devout mother did not want her daughter to sing vulgar lyrics. However, Nadia wanted a chance to succeed as a singer, so she sang vulgar lyrics. The recording is over. Then the song needed to be mixed down. Jun Fukuda was too busy. As a result, DJ Hapio will mix down. DJ Hapio listened to the first version and thought the guitar was too loud. So he reduced the sound of the guitar and added a lot of electronic sounds. This was adopted in the US version of NMH2. After that, Maru was surprised to hear the US version of "Philstein". Because the sound of the electric guitar was gone. Maru decided to redo the mixdown himself for the European and Japanese versions. As a result, the European and Japanese versions of "Philstein" have regained the sound of a loud electric guitar. For this reason, it can be said that the EU and JP versions of "Philstein" are more similar to the first version than the US version. Which is the better version? Both are the best.

@@dragon1130 part of why I feel nmh2 kinda missed the point of nmh1 is because they tried to make travis actually cool when the entire thing in nmh1 is that he and all the other assassin are essentially a bunch of no-life larpers who live otherwise uneventful lives except for the brief periods where they can both live out their fantasies of being someone actually exceptional; but at the end of the day they're all just doing what they do for either a paycheck or sex and will go back to being just as un-exceptional as before the moment it ends
Same here! My phyical copies of NMH 1 and 2 arrived a few weeks back. I finished NMH 1 last night and I have started NMH 2. Both games are fantastic and I can't wait to play NMH 3 next month!
[SPOILERS] Kill The Past is my favorite thing ever. No joke. I love the characters, the atmosphere, the music, each KTP game is so unique. One of my favorite vocal songs within the franchise is Philistine. I love how both NA and JP versions sound, they have such a badass tone. But it really shows NOBODY is a hero within KTP. Each protagonist has a dark side. Travis Touchdown is one of them. I like how this song is just a callout to Travis, yet it's one of the most fantastic songs ever. The lyrics show so much about Travis's true personality, and that he accepts the fact he can't be a hero. About the other KTP characters too, Garcian Smith. He was an assassin in a younger life, who took control of those 7 people he assassinated and absorbed their personalities. He isn't a hero, a good guy, no. He's an assassin with a dark history. The Heinous Crimes unit. They all have individually have something badly wrong about them, and they're all messed up. Shiroyabu Mokutaro. He starts off as a hero, but then later on he slowly turns into a villain, holding bloodlust deep down. I like the light that shines on Sudas games, revealing facts NOBODY is a hero. Kill the past evokes topics of finding the meaning of life, karma, showing how "violence makes you gain power" and facing the truth. No More Heroes delves into a lot of these, NMH2 focusing on both "karma" and "violence making you gain power." A certain lyric in this song is special to me, and that is the "You think the fire in your eyes makes you a tiger in disguise? Dream on you goddamn pussy!" lyric. It shows the fact how Travis thinks he's superior and strong, thinking he's like a tiger. Yet, he is just one of those regular assassins fallen into a trick by Sylvia. Sylvia toys with him, as much as she did with past assassins like Helter Skelter. I'm happy these games exist. I have gotten through so much hard times and I'm happy KTP shines a light on mental illness. I feel like I can connect with the series, these games live in my heart. Killer7 and both 25th Ward make me feel special. One of the characters in KTP that I feel that would be close to Margaret is David from Killer is Dead. They give off the same aesthetic, just not the fashion aesthetic. One is a king who has a fascination for bling, and one is a girl who has a fascination for J-fashion, specifically lolita. But they give off a certain aesthetic that they'd be friends. They're both reapers of the moon. A theory that I also have is that: Sylvia, Stephen and Jean DePaul are all related. They're all as equally as arrogant as each other, they all share a French descent and they're all blonde, which could possibly make them related. They also all like to lie and toy around a lot. I love this song so much. It explains a lot of topics within KTP, yet being a diss track against Travis. I also love the use of "Requiem aeternam" in the lyrics, meaning Eternal Rest. The requiem mass is something special, to be celebrated before a funeral. There's also a character I want to shine a light to in KTP here. Kamikaze Wateru. He works as an Undertaker for a funeral service. This certain lyric reminds me of him. A fun fact about Wateru too is that he was tought to be an assassin by Travis Touchdown himself. Philistine means a person who is hostile. A lot of KTP characters are seen as hostile. This song is not only just a callout to Travis, but a callout to everyone else in KTP when you think about it. Yes, the song is meant to be towards Travis, but the lyrics match up to a lot of other KTP topics. "So go on, whip around that sword like you're the best, it's such a bore" shows how Travis is arrogant, thinking he's the best out of everyone because he scores #1 in the UAA everytime. But its also ironic the franchise is called KTP when most of the characters can't Kill The Past, when their future is just as dark as their past. Travis becomes more thoughtful in Travis Strikes Again however, learning how he has killed REAL people and not just dolls. In NMH2, he forgets about Helter Skelter, the brother of Skelter Helter, known as Vincent. Badman sees to get revenge like how Vincent did with his brother, yet Travis wants to help Badman instead to revive Charlotte. There is a lot of topics with family in this franchise, Helter Skelter + Skelter Helter, they're both brothers. Alice Twilight + Margaret Moonlight, they're both sisters. Each of these siblings fell for the UAA. Travis Touchdown + Henry Cooldown, they're both brothers with a strong rivalry. David + Mondo Zappa, they also have a rivalry against eachother. Badman and Bad girl, Toriko and Tetsugoro, etc etc. There is a lot of family-related topics in the franchise. It's funny how Travis and Bad Girl become friends. Same with Shinobu. They're destined to be rivals, but grew close to each other for whatever reason. But I like how Travis never forgot Jeane in a way. He named his cat after Jeane. But this comes in with the debate: Who is Jeane Touchdowns father? Henry. She was born a few years Travis even met Sylvia, being Henry's child. So it's possibly speculated Henry also named the child Jeane after his sister too. This song is just deeply gorgeous to me. The song is so beautiful, and I love how unique each lyric line for line is. Thank you SUDA51 and Grasshopper for these fantastic games and mangas. And also thank you Jun Fukuda, Maru, Masafumi Takada, Akira Yamaoka and everyone else who worked on the music for the KTP franchise. It's catchy as hell.

I love the flavor the autotune adds, like how other artists use it now (Kacy Hill, Katie Gately, Let's Eat Grandma, or Charli XCX), and in the past way before this song. The autotune isn't meant to be a crutch but add a cool effect just like distortion or reverb.

Charlotte and Margaret are very similar. They both wear gothic Lolita clothing and both have lyrics in their boss themes. But there is one big difference that makes Margaret better. Charlotte is a “bad girl” Margaret is a “PURE girl”
I greatly prefer this version. The US version is still amazing and my favorite track in the game, but this version has a crowning moment of excellence - specifically, at 3:15 the song doubles-down and the climax builds to a wild and almost uncontrollable level that the US version never goes to by repeating the chorus with heightened background instrumentals. It's for this reason why I like this version better; that moment of sublime, wild ecstasy I suppose you could call it.

This is the song that fully convinced me to finally play No More Heroes, and after finishing 2, I can say it was entirely worth it. My favorite song in the franchise and Margaret is best girl.

This was such a great boss she was super strong and the way this themed was used, the first time I fought her I felt so outclassed like I was really giving it my all to keep on her level. Not a ton of soundtracks can throw you off like that. Great game.

What I find most investing is how while Margarete is calling out and absolutely verbally annihilating Travis, she herself is not devoid of these faults. Her attire is very formal with how little it reveals and its colouring, her weapon and persona based on it is one of the Grim Reaper, an icon for inevitable and almighty death, an image that is often even portrayed as noble and regal, something she emulates by taking from mythology and greek phrases. However the lyrics are brash, insulting and petty.

He was given an illustration by Yusuke Kozaki and a little Margaret's profile.
Based on that information, he expanded his image and composed.
The first version had no vocals.
Because he doesn't know that this song needs vocals.
He wasn't allowed to read the NMH2 scenario.
The NMH2 scenario was confidential.
Only some powers were allowed to read the scenario.
The first version of this song, composed by Maru, had a loud electric guitar sound.
And it was left unattended for months.
As the US version of NMH2 was approaching its deadline, assistant director Ichiki realized that the song needed vocals. But the project didn't have the time or budget to write a new song anymore.
Therefore, the lyrics were written according to the melody of the first version. The lyrics were written by a man who was an employee of GHM. He was mentally ill and thought of SUDA 51 as an irreverent person. That kind of thought was mixed in with the lyrics. He wrote the lyrics in Japanese.
The translator translated almost exactly. However, "irreverent person" has changed to "Philistine". Ordinary Japanese do not know the word "Philistine". The translator did a good job.
GHM didn't have the budget anymore, so the publisher had to find a vocalist to sing this song. It had to be a girl like Jane Birkin or Kahimi Karie. But he couldn't find such a Lolita.
He sought out Nadia Gifford, who lives in Japan. She was chosen because she was a native English speaker. She wasn't a Lolita voice. However, she was good at singing, so the result was good.
Her mother was more of a problem than Nadia. The devout mother did not want her daughter to sing vulgar lyrics. However, Nadia wanted a chance to succeed as a singer, so she sang vulgar lyrics.
The recording is over. Then the song needed to be mixed down.
Jun Fukuda was too busy. As a result, DJ Hapio will mix down.
DJ Hapio listened to the first version and thought the guitar was too loud. So he reduced the sound of the guitar and added a lot of electronic sounds.
This was adopted in the US version of NMH2.
After that, Maru was surprised to hear the US version of "Philstein". Because the sound of the electric guitar was gone.
Maru decided to redo the mixdown himself for the European and Japanese versions.
As a result, the European and Japanese versions of "Philstein" have regained the sound of a loud electric guitar.
For this reason, it can be said that the EU and JP versions of "Philstein" are more similar to the first version than the US version.

[SPOILERS] Kill The Past is my favorite thing ever. No joke.
I love the characters, the atmosphere, the music, each KTP game is so unique.
One of my favorite vocal songs within the franchise is Philistine. I love how both NA and JP versions sound, they have such a badass tone.
But it really shows NOBODY is a hero within KTP. Each protagonist has a dark side.
Travis Touchdown is one of them. I like how this song is just a callout to Travis, yet it's one of the most fantastic songs ever. The lyrics show so much about Travis's true personality, and that he accepts the fact he can't be a hero.
About the other KTP characters too,
Garcian Smith. He was an assassin in a younger life, who took control of those 7 people he assassinated and absorbed their personalities. He isn't a hero, a good guy, no. He's an assassin with a dark history.
The Heinous Crimes unit. They all have individually have something badly wrong about them, and they're all messed up.
Shiroyabu Mokutaro. He starts off as a hero, but then later on he slowly turns into a villain, holding bloodlust deep down.
I like the light that shines on Sudas games, revealing facts NOBODY is a hero.
Kill the past evokes topics of finding the meaning of life, karma, showing how "violence makes you gain power" and facing the truth.
No More Heroes delves into a lot of these, NMH2 focusing on both "karma" and "violence making you gain power."
A certain lyric in this song is special to me, and that is the "You think the fire in your eyes makes you a tiger in disguise? Dream on you goddamn pussy!" lyric.
It shows the fact how Travis thinks he's superior and strong, thinking he's like a tiger. Yet, he is just one of those regular assassins fallen into a trick by Sylvia.
Sylvia toys with him, as much as she did with past assassins like Helter Skelter.
I'm happy these games exist. I have gotten through so much hard times and I'm happy KTP shines a light on mental illness. I feel like I can connect with the series, these games live in my heart. Killer7 and both 25th Ward make me feel special.
One of the characters in KTP that I feel that would be close to Margaret is David from Killer is Dead. They give off the same aesthetic, just not the fashion aesthetic. One is a king who has a fascination for bling, and one is a girl who has a fascination for J-fashion, specifically lolita.
But they give off a certain aesthetic that they'd be friends. They're both reapers of the moon.
A theory that I also have is that:
Sylvia, Stephen and Jean DePaul are all related. They're all as equally as arrogant as each other, they all share a French descent and they're all blonde, which could possibly make them related.
They also all like to lie and toy around a lot.
I love this song so much. It explains a lot of topics within KTP, yet being a diss track against Travis.
I also love the use of "Requiem aeternam" in the lyrics, meaning Eternal Rest. The requiem mass is something special, to be celebrated before a funeral.
There's also a character I want to shine a light to in KTP here.
Kamikaze Wateru. He works as an Undertaker for a funeral service.
This certain lyric reminds me of him. A fun fact about Wateru too is that he was tought to be an assassin by Travis Touchdown himself.
Philistine means a person who is hostile.
A lot of KTP characters are seen as hostile.
This song is not only just a callout to Travis, but a callout to everyone else in KTP when you think about it. Yes, the song is meant to be towards Travis, but the lyrics match up to a lot of other KTP topics. "So go on, whip around that sword like you're the best, it's such a bore" shows how Travis is arrogant, thinking he's the best out of everyone because he scores #1 in the UAA everytime.
But its also ironic the franchise is called KTP when most of the characters can't Kill The Past, when their future is just as dark as their past.
Travis becomes more thoughtful in Travis Strikes Again however, learning how he has killed REAL people and not just dolls. In NMH2, he forgets about Helter Skelter, the brother of Skelter Helter, known as Vincent.
Badman sees to get revenge like how Vincent did with his brother, yet Travis wants to help Badman instead to revive Charlotte.
There is a lot of topics with family in this franchise,
Helter Skelter + Skelter Helter, they're both brothers.
Alice Twilight + Margaret Moonlight, they're both sisters.
Each of these siblings fell for the UAA.
Travis Touchdown + Henry Cooldown, they're both brothers with a strong rivalry.
David + Mondo Zappa, they also have a rivalry against eachother.
Badman and Bad girl, Toriko and Tetsugoro, etc etc. There is a lot of family-related topics in the franchise.
It's funny how Travis and Bad Girl become friends. Same with Shinobu.
They're destined to be rivals, but grew close to each other for whatever reason.
But I like how Travis never forgot Jeane in a way. He named his cat after Jeane.
But this comes in with the debate: Who is Jeane Touchdowns father?
Henry.
She was born a few years Travis even met Sylvia, being Henry's child.
So it's possibly speculated Henry also named the child Jeane after his sister too.
This song is just deeply gorgeous to me. The song is so beautiful, and I love how unique each lyric line for line is.

I greatly prefer this version. The US version is still amazing and my favorite track in the game, but this version has a crowning moment of excellence - specifically, at 3:15 the song doubles-down and the climax builds to a wild and almost uncontrollable level that the US version never goes to by repeating the chorus with heightened background instrumentals. It's for this reason why I like this version better; that moment of sublime, wild ecstasy I suppose you could call it.

What a more emotional and well done score, really wish this went into the original American version, the other version is okay but this is just.. To be honest I like this version better. The "horrible shitty supermegabad autotune" gives a nice "broken speaker" effect. Also this is more guitar heavy and has a nice and almost jazzy tempo. Ofc its just my opinion and you might not like it as much as I do but thats okay. I like the other version a lot too but I just prefer this one ^w^
Fanarkist nah you're right this is better. that slight jazzy piano notes just fit so well. As well as the rough sounding autotune etc etc....more insecure localization I guess.

@@ash_lazarus I should preface that its not like this kinda style of song wasn't popular back when it was made, which was probably why it sounds like this, but shit like the heavy autotune and punk rock instrumental is coming back in fashion with hyperpop and the general revival of mid 00's punk rock. When I heard the song on my first playthru a few months back (around when i made the comment) I was just in my head thinking "wow this is literally just a modern day hyperpop / punk song but this game is like 12 yrs old"
