Please stop calling yourself stupid. There's nothing stupid about broadening your horizons. It's difficult for anyone to find the words to describe something that impresses them, especially quickly and on-the-spot. You're doing a superb job.
Just a fun fact, Charlie Daniels played with everybody in country music and that’s not an exaggeration. He was in more bands and was featured with so many other country artists throughout his life. He wasn’t just good at what he did he was a good dude! RIP Charlie Daniels
A violinist (or fiddle player!) can tell you the devil was playing the tritone forbidden chord, aka "the devil's chord". Johnny brought it all out. Charlie was truly talented, may he RIP.
Yep.. it's commonly referred to as "The devils 3rd".. as I'm sure you know, it was actually BANNED in Europe for hundreds of years.. because the catholic church had declared that chord structure actually brought a demonic presence into the room.. black sabbath used it heavily on theor first album.. thats why they sounded so different from other bands
I remember back in the early 70's when this first came out. There was a real big ruckus, over his use of one word. He had to replace "bitch" with "gun". Otherwise there were radio stations that refused to play it. Great musician...RIP.
I met him in the late 80s in a high-profile restaurant where I worked as a dishwasher outside downtown Nashville TN, his sole request while there was to shake the hands of the dishwashers.
My dad was a farmer/truck driver./and coach bus driver. In 1977 (after this Saratoga springs show) my dad was called because their bus broke down near the bus shop, and dad had to drive the Charlie Daniels band to Alabama from PA, for their next show. He said, Willie Nelson's bus would be tame in comparison. This song was in our house daily in the late 70s.
I was blessed to see them perform back in '83, and it was a great show. Charlie Daniels was well liked and respected by many, and I've never seen social media light up like it did when he passed. Artists from all genres came out to share their respects for him for who he was.
Everyone from Tennessee talk like Charles Daniels even though he was from North Carolina he lived in Mount Juliet Tennessee for many years, his volunteer jam was a legendary anual concert, volunteer jam 13 was the first time lynyrd skynyrd reformed after the plane crash, it was at starwood ampitheater, in 87 in Nashville tn
I was lucky to see him play 17 times over the years in small venues and large and 4 of those times were with the Marshall Tucker Band i saw him a year or so before he passed in Ruidoso New Mexico
A fun one is "Uneasy Rider" from 1973 by CDB. He later put out one called "Uneasy Rider 88" which is a different story. Of the two songs the best is the original 1973 "Uneasy Rider". It's also a song that tells a story and a very funny one at that.
Charlie Daniels was one of the best storytellers ever! You should check out “Midnight Train Roll On “. I’m not sure if that’s the actual name. It might just be “Midnight Train “. I had a cassette tape that had awesome Charlie Daniels music back in the 80s or early 90s that was amazing! This is one of my favorites from that album. I know nowadays there aren’t really albums. I’m old school.
It is called Midnight Train if it is the same album it was called Homesick Heros came out in 1988 and another good song on that album is Alligator Along with Uneasy Rider 88
He is was Southern rocker, but was labeled country because he played the violin. He was friends with Ron Vansant, Steve Gains of Lynand Skinard and a lot of them.
Great fiddle player and storyteller Charlie! Other stories include "Uneasy Rider', "Legend Of Wooly Swamp" and "In America". React to them sometime. Thanks.😎
A touch of Appalachia with the country and rock. Love ♥️ I was in front of him standing in line at the DQ in Carbondale, Illinois, when they played at SIU - Southern Illinois U - in the late '70's. His limo was pulled up waiting and he stood in line. It didn't register on me at the time what was happening. While I was walking away with my chocolate banana shake and saw the limo is when I realized who the really tall, big guy in the cowboy hat & sunglasses was. We had said hello to each other in line though, which yay, at least I was polite. I wish I had known who he was!
Hello again so happy to see you are continuing to hear all kinds of music, Here's another one that gets pushed back into the ages one of my first concerts in 68 Ian Anderson's "Jethro Tull" "Aqualung" song Locomotive Breath which came out in the 68 it's a story. his first album was Benefit
Do not put yourself down it is a known fact that the first names in a conversation are the easiest to forget, so always repeat the names over to help with the memory.
Fwiw, in the context of country music and bluegrass, it's the same instrument but it is generally referred to as a fiddle as opposed to a violin. Just like the bass of the string family, which is called a double bass in classical music but in more contemporary music it is referred to as a stand-up or an acoustic bass. The Knack is an absolutely fascinating phenomenon to me and you've probably heard their huge hit, My Sharona. It's a great song and it became so popular and played so much Weird Al Yankovic did a cover of it. It's actually a great song with a fantastic guitar solo. But I like every single song off of that Get the Knack album. 1980 I believe.
Fun fact.. Charlie was a REAL cowboy.. didnt pretend to be one just because he played a lot of country.. and he's actual missing most of one finger because he was roping a calf.. and his hand got caught between the rope and saddle buckle.. pulling his finger off at the second knuckle..
I think you should absolutely check out one of his other hits, Long Haired Country Boy. Its energy is in the other direction but it is such a chill song and fun to sing along with.
Man, I saw this live and I will never forget it. It just makes you smile. I jig when I'm cooking on my grill in the summer, drinking something cool and hearing my happy tunes.
Yes they are outside. The venue was Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs NY. Its not a stadium, just a big stage in a big country field. Now the venue has open air covered seating for about 40 rows then the rest is still just land
Seen him perform in 1980. Major hit. Played on country and rock stations. And back then they didn't censor. Today you'll never hear him say son of a bitch on the radio. America went backwards not forwards. And Charlie as much said so many times during his Fireside Chats on TH-cam before his death. My he RIP 🤠🏞️🐂
Check Charlie Daniel’s song “uneasy rider”. Or “legend of woolly swamp”. Both these tell a story. Charlie is known as one of Americas best story tellers.
This was on the rock radio for decades! IF YOU LIKE CONVERSATION TYPE STORIES... YOU'LL LOVE THE SONG "TEDDY BEAR" BY RED SOVINE I really recommend it!!!❤
Enjoyed your reaction!! Although the Charlie Daniels Band was great no matter what they did, this was certainly the cream of the crop of the band's career. We miss you, Charlie, but I guess Heaven's band (which seems to be growing way too quickly 😢) needed a fiddle player. The jams must be out of this world up there! 🎻 ❤ 🎻
This is his best known song but there's not a single bad song on his decade of hits greatest hits album, I see a lot of reactors loving uneasy rider, legend of wooly swamp, and longhaired country boy
The song plays on a tradition of musicians going into the southern woods (usually Georgia) and making a deal with the devil and coming back the best musician around. There have been movies, TV specials and other songs built on the same background story. Charlie Daniels was one of the first traditional country artists to cross over into rock. I saw him with The Marshall Tucker Band in KC.
I love being able to relive my childhood experiences through reaction videos. I felt exactly like you the first time I heard this song, though I was only 12 at the time. I hope you have some Rush and Alice in Chains in your reactions
I also like songs that tell a story. Here are a few that do just that. The Highwaymen -The Highwaymen, Steve Earle - Copperhead Road, Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. - The Conversation.
Fyi there is a great follow up to this song in the 90s called THE DEVIL GOES BACK TO GEORGIA. with several other artists helping out for the video. Very well done
scat, in the early 40s, became Rap, or street poetry in the late 80s, until what ever it is today. But several artists , blues , jazz, country artists, used it in late 50's , 60's.and 70s. They were story tellers..with rhyme.
Now that you've heard "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" you need to hear the sequel. Mark O'Connor put out an album called "Heroes" in which he plays duets with all of the fiddle players that influenced him. One of the tracks is "The Devil Came Back to Georgia" in which he pairs up with Charlie Daniels to play the next phase of the fiddle challenge. Great stuff!!! Definitely worth chasing down.
If you like this kind of fiddling, I recommend listening to Allison Krauss and Union Station. There's a live performance. She's the main singer, and the fiddler. This time Dan Tyminsky became the singer and she did the fiddling. The song is The Boy Who Won't Hoe Corn.
This was in Saratoga Springs, NY it is an amphitheater, a covered stage and lower section but otherwise is open with a huge grass embankment behind the structure where you can sit on grass outdoors but still see the stage. Been there a few times, cool place to see a show
The live concert he did on pbs was a sight to see, it was supposed to last one and a half hours but he kept on playing for almost 3. It was in the early to mid 80's.
Everyone reacting to this thinks this concert was in the south, rural south. It is three hours NORTH of New York City.
Please stop calling yourself stupid. There's nothing stupid about broadening your horizons. It's difficult for anyone to find the words to describe something that impresses them, especially quickly and on-the-spot.
You're doing a superb job.
Agreed, I feel like that so many times myself but it’s all a learning experience
It’s been said countless times “A violin has strings and a fiddle has strangs.”
Just a fun fact, Charlie Daniels played with everybody in country music and that’s not an exaggeration. He was in more bands and was featured with so many other country artists throughout his life. He wasn’t just good at what he did he was a good dude! RIP Charlie Daniels
Not just country. Look up Charlie Daniel's and Ted Nugent
He played guitar on Bob Dylan’s Nashville skylines sessions
What Clapton did in Blues music is what Charli Daniels was to Country music in my opinion.❤😂
yeah I saw him then too with the Whistle Pigs. A very good local cover band. Charlie rocked and was a good dude.
RIP CD
Jack Daniels was his inspiration to play like this!(just kidding 😁)
Love his hat and the music btw. 🙏
Man the way his fingers fly across those strangs
One of the first rap songs ever (1979)!!! I think Dre called Charlie one of the founders of Rap! Lol. This was long before rap was a genre.
I remember back in the early 70's when this first came out. There was a real big ruckus, over his use of one word. He had to replace "bitch" with "gun". Otherwise there were radio stations that refused to play it. Great musician...RIP.
I remember that! Now look what they play today. SMH.
This song was HUGE back in the day!
This is considered Southern Rock
I met him in the late 80s in a high-profile restaurant where I worked as a dishwasher outside downtown Nashville TN, his sole request while there was to shake the hands of the dishwashers.
Wow! A true gentlemen and a good soul!
100%@@wendyryder2708
Charlie Daniels had a story in pretty much anything he played, great southern rock! RIP Charlie Daniels.
Bluegrass is the third element you're looking for along with the rock and the country.
Seen Charlie and Lynard Skynyrd in 2000... best concert ever!!!
Charlie Daniel's is a real patriot one of the best
THE KNACK - My Sharona. A real one hit wonder. Worth a listen just for a classic 80s song.
Yes Charlie could fill stadiums! He was and is a legend.
I was blessed to see them perform back in '83, and it was a great show.
Charlie Daniels was well liked and respected by many, and I've never seen social media light up like it did when he passed. Artists from all genres came out to share their respects for him for who he was.
Loved your reaction to this priceless song!! RIP Charlie...you're still missed.
He's a story teller, for sure.
Charlie Daniels was from my Hometown of Wilmington; NC.
RIP Charlie.. you’ll never be replaced🙏🏻 and y’all thought Aerosmith and Run DMC blended rock and hip hop.. Charlie got bars.
A fun one is "Uneasy Rider" from 1973 by CDB. He later put out one called "Uneasy Rider 88" which is a different story. Of the two songs the best is the original 1973 "Uneasy Rider". It's also a song that tells a story and a very funny one at that.
Thank you! That song always cracked me up and I have tried for years to remember what the title was.
Yes the 1973 version with the green teeth was surely the best.
That was a FIDDLE!!!
RIP CHARLIE!!!!
Yeah, a fiddle, not a violin.
Remember "Uneasy Rider"? Another great story song. What a smooth easy voice he has. RIP
It is called Midnight Train if it is the same album it was called Homesick Heros came out in 1988 and another good song on that album is Alligator
Along with Uneasy Rider 88
Charlie Daniels is probably one of the best fiddle players ever ❤ It is so Hot you almost expect flames ❤😡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Long Haired Country Boy, The South's Gonna do it Again, Uneasy Rider, Simple Man
He is was Southern rocker, but was labeled country because he played the violin. He was friends with Ron Vansant, Steve Gains of Lynand Skinard and a lot of them.
Long haired country boy is a great song.
Great fiddle player and storyteller Charlie! Other stories include "Uneasy Rider', "Legend Of Wooly Swamp" and "In America". React to them sometime. Thanks.😎
My favorite Charlie Daniels song is Uneasy Rider. Music of my youth!!!
I can still sing this song verbatim. One of my favorite country songs of all time!
Same and I’m Australian, grew up with this and the Gambler as my fav songs 😁
A touch of Appalachia with the country and rock. Love ♥️
I was in front of him standing in line at the DQ in Carbondale, Illinois, when they played at SIU - Southern Illinois U - in the late '70's.
I wouldn't consider Charlie Daniels' music to be Southern Rock at all. He was Country music all the way.
One of The Best story tellers.. Check out the rest of his stuff..
This was when music was music and you had actual talent.
Nope, you're not tripping. This song was definitely in The Waterboy.
I got to see Charlie perform years ago, and I live right down the road from where he's from...literally a few miles.
All pianists can play with one hand. Every one.
The show must go on. "I only got one arm." "Get on stage." lol
Yes! Ian Andersen SLAYS on flute!
Do not put yourself down it is a known fact that the first names in a conversation are the easiest to forget, so always repeat the names over to help with the memory.
“Talking Song” have been a staple in country music for many many years.
Fwiw, in the context of country music and bluegrass, it's the same instrument but it is generally referred to as a fiddle as opposed to a violin. Just like the bass of the string family, which is called a double bass in classical music but in more contemporary music it is referred to as a stand-up or an acoustic bass.

Charlie Daniels isn’t talking he’s straight up rapping. Unpopular opinion in my part….. I think the devils solo was better than Johnnys
May Charlie rest in peace. You should listen to the devil went down to Jamaica. It's awesome.
This song is in the format of talking blues, maybe a grandfather of rap. I woukd classify this track as Southern Rock mixed with bluegrass.
I think you would love his song “In America”. Another great up tempo song with a message that we could certainly use today.
I think you should absolutely check out one of his other hits, Long Haired Country Boy. Its energy is in the other direction but it is such a chill song and fun to sing along with.
This was a fantastic reaction… I had so much fun watching you get to see something new and appreciate it 💥
Man, I saw this live and I will never forget it. It just makes you smile. I jig when I'm cooking on my grill in the summer, drinking something cool and hearing my happy tunes.
I saw Charlie Daniels Band perform this at a concert almost 40 years ago. It was amazing!!
Great reaction, thanks for covering such a great song 👏
Yes they are outside. The venue was Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs NY. Its not a stadium, just a big stage in a big country field. Now the venue has open air covered seating for about 40 rows then the rest is still just land
this is some of the music I grew up with in the 70s and 80s and still love it
You should try Roy Clark. He was a genius on manyyy instruments .
👏👏👏
Chet Atkins…he invented the electric guitar
You are correct. It was in The Waterboy, they would play a snippet when when home to his momma.
The show is at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). It a pavilion with a lawn area out under the stars. Saw The Grateful Dead there. Fun times.
Seen him perform in 1980.
Major hit. Played on country and rock stations. And back then they didn't censor. Today you'll never hear him say son of a bitch on the radio. America went backwards not forwards. And Charlie as much said so many times during his Fireside Chats on TH-cam before his death.
My he RIP
🤠🏞️🐂
I was at this concert, what a show.
Charlie was a fantastic musician, put on a helluva show, too. Saw him twice back then. Check out Uneasy Rider
Top notch reaction as usual, #1 by a landslide IMO
He was rapping. He has bars
This is such a fun song! Yeah, the audience was pleased for sure. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
That’s called country rock!
Check Charlie Daniel’s song “uneasy rider”. Or “legend of woolly swamp”. Both these tell a story. Charlie is known as one of Americas best story tellers.
Thank you.Really.Thank you.
The 70s was such a great year decade for the devil
This was on the rock radio for decades! IF YOU LIKE CONVERSATION TYPE STORIES... YOU'LL LOVE THE SONG "TEDDY BEAR" BY RED SOVINE
I really recommend it!!!❤
Great song! Box of tissues is a pre-requisite for listening to that song! Lol
I was going to say I bet you have heard this in a movie and then you bust out Waterboy! 🤣 Love it!
Phenomenal Story Teller!
This is his best known song but there's not a single bad song on his decade of hits greatest hits album, I see a lot of reactors loving uneasy rider, legend of wooly swamp, and longhaired country boy
Just wait til you peep “The Devil Went BACK To Georgia.”
CDB blended rock, country, bluegrass, and folk. Fhis became southern rock and/or outlaw country
He also did a lot of straight up gospel.
Bluegrass Rap!❤
The song plays on a tradition of musicians going into the southern woods (usually Georgia) and making a deal with the devil and coming back the best musician around. There have been movies, TV specials and other songs built on the same background story. Charlie Daniels was one of the first traditional country artists to cross over into rock. Fyi there is a great follow up to this song in the 90s called THE DEVIL GOES BACK TO GEORGIA. with several other artists helping out for the video. Very well done
A good story song, try The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia, by Vicki Lawrence.
Wah..wah..watah boy!!! Classic
the fiddle (violin) gives it a touch of blue grass music
scat, in the early 40s, became Rap, or street poetry in the late 80s, until what ever it is today. But several artists , blues , jazz, country artists, used it in late 50's , 60's.and 70s. They were story tellers..with rhyme.
That’s what country is. They tell the you a story. First time watching you. Enjoyed it.
Now that you've heard "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" you need to hear the sequel. Alison Krause. Baby Mine…
Also the Steeldrivers are awesome in the Bluegrass genre
This was in Saratoga Springs, NY it is an amphitheater, a covered stage and lower section but otherwise is open with a huge grass embankment behind the structure where you can sit on grass outdoors but still see the stage. Been there a few times, cool place to see a show
You're awesome keep it up... i watch you every day
Another trivia fact Dr Dre said Charlie Daniel's was one of the original OG rappers. RIP Charlie Daniel's.
RIP Charlie Daniels
The best of the best!
Yes sir that instrumental is definitely used in the waterboy
The sheer power and drive in their music is absolutely mind-blowing.
and just now October Ends dropped a banger 🔥 You gotta react to it!
The live concert he did on pbs was a sight to see, it was supposed to last one and a half hours but he kept on playing for almost 3. It was in the early to mid 80's.
Charlie played a fiddle, not a violin! LOL
To me, when he starts sawing on that Fiddle he is going into Bluegrass, a genre between Folk Music and Country.
