    For the destructable objects, making them a bit bouncier and moving more will make the look much nicer. Also sound effects play a huge role in it and them having unique sound effects would be nice. (And a breakable sand castle damn)

    Ooh, for the breaking animation, you could add a really big dust particle to cover up the item itself and switch to a broken version while the dust is going on and have the dust stretch and fade!!

  • @feijoea
    @feijoea ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your sprites look really good! You may want to try making the destructible objects collision animation instead of using particles, it might help with the effect you're going for!

    Congrats on finishing that 8-direction animation, that looks like a freaking monumental amount of work. Do you think you're going to hand draw all the other characters too?

    • @ButWhyLevin
      @ButWhyLevin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll probably use the one I’ve already made as a base, although sight changes could characterize them a bit. The 3 player characters will be the only ones with 8 directional movement, so hopefully it won’t be too much of a time sink

    You could make your character psychic so that it would explain how he can telekinetically control the sword (just add some purple sparkly outline around the sword à la mob psycho 100)

    • @ButWhyLevin
      @ButWhyLevin  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been planning on doing something like that, like making the sword magical or something, so thanks for bringing it up, I need to get onto it eventually

    There seems to be a gap between your tiles. The solution to this problem is to create a sprite atlas, and adding all of your tilemap sprite sheets under the "Objects for packing" list. Don't know why it works, but it generally works.

    • @ButWhyLevin
      @ButWhyLevin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s the thing, I did that. All of the tiles are in a sprite atlas, which fixed some but not all of the gaps

    • @durrium
      @durrium ปีที่แล้ว

      i think you can make the tilemaps tiles overlap by setting their scaling X and Y to expand 0.01 and -0.01

    Something cool could be a stamina system where when you sprint you lose some stamina. This could prevent players spamming sprint and add a challenge

    • @ButWhyLevin
      @ButWhyLevin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'll definitely have to find a way to balance dashing, although I think that I will just put it on a longer cooldown, because when I'm playing a game like Archvale or Tiny Rogues, I find it hard to keep track of the amount of dashes I have left when I'm dodging bullets and shooting at the boss, so I end up pressing the button to dash and then not going anywhere. Its a skill issue on my part, but I personally want to try and find a different solution

    What if you make the terrain destructible? Might add something to the combat.

    6:12 a time pause effect would make a big difference

  • @samuelgafford
    @samuelgafford ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the reason your destructibles feel unsatisfying is that they break immediately upon contact. This is fine, but you want to add variation. In games like enter the gungeon, things don't generally break until you interact with them, with some exceptions. If you add rigid bodies and physics to some of them and maybe give them a small hp bar so you have to damage them a bit before they break would help. I'm sure there are some animation tricks as well, but I can't help with that part lol.

    Your sprites aren't at all terrible, they are quite fine for a beginner, the essential stuff is to look up references, other games like stardew valley and terraria could be a great reference point in making your characters, especially stardew valley that has a general style to making people close to what you're going for, and of course studying the basics of light and shadow and colors to make better pixel-art
    And i think your destructible objects look kinda wrong because they lack the bounce that the other games have, like in enter the gungeon you dodge roll intro a crate and pieces of it go flying before hitting the ground and the little pieces are scattered across a small area but still giving distance to one thing to another, again seeing references while making this sort of stuff is essential to get a good result.

    I'm questionning the idea of after learning 3D why going to pixel art style and not use your knowledge about 3D. Or maybe if you really want a pixelart vib, finding a compromise : turn 3D into pixel art with shaders or something like that ?

    • @ButWhyLevin
      @ButWhyLevin  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just because I want to do pixel art, I’m not on a tight deadline or anything so I want to learn a new skill while making this game

    I think you should unlock one person and then unlock the other's maybe by defeating a boss or something it does not have to be a boss PS: this game looks awesome

    • @ButWhyLevin
      @ButWhyLevin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the suggestion and compliment, I think it’s a good idea to make you unlock characters one by one for tutorial purposes, but I’d rather you have all of them by 30 minutes into the game or so, I plan on jobs and weapons being the main unlockables
