I can't hear rain on a tent without hearing my dad's voice; "Kids, remember don't touch the side of the tent!" Canvas. Presumably the tent would then leak but we were to chicken to ever try it. Coleman lanterns and nothing inflated lol 1960s. Old School. Thanks for sharing Luke, it's always a treat!

Tarpology is something that every good camper should know. 🙂 One thing that I *love* is the sound of the wind through the trees, it a wonderful, relaxing sound to me. Those warming pads would be perfect for putting into your boots a few minutes before putting them on on a cold day to warm them up. Warm boots are a very nice thing to wake up to!

But as much as I like the reviews and gear talk, I hafta admit, there's something special, both calming and stimulating about these "just hang out in the woods" videos, especially in the rain. My 2 brothers and I would pack up a coleman tent, sleeping bags,a grate and a couple of cooking pots and hike a few miles down the railroad tracks to the river. We'd spend a few days catching fish, killing squirrels cooking them up along with foraged greens.I was the oldest at 13 and our Mom would come down to have supper with us on the last evening supposedly to enjoy the food but I knew she just wanted to make sure we got home safely.
Times have changed for the worse methinks.

Always wondered - if you're going to hunker down with extra tarps, then why not use the tent as one of the walls? Historically, I've set up the tarp for more "common" areas separate from the tent, but if you're by yourself and the site allows it, perhaps it would work well enough to keep the wind out. The tarp doesn't have to be tied to the tent, but all you need the tent to do is to stop the wind.
Also - it's nice to know you went back to the "old reliable" Aqua Quest tarp for this trip.

    • @Xeno-M.
      @Xeno-M. 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Ordinarily you would be right. But as another commenter stated, Luke is testing the tent for heat retention and wind blocking. It would be pointless to skew the results by having a tarp blocking a good portion of that wind from reaching the tent.

I just love the sound of rain. My grandmother owned a farm and when my brother and I were young, we stayed with her while my parents were working. Whenever the rain came we would sit on the front porch waiting for it to stop so we could go back outside and play. But there were times when I needed a nap and I would lay across her bed listening to the rain until it put me to sleep. Ever since, I've loved the sound of rain and enjoy listening to the rain in your videos. ♥️

Those warmers are interesting, but you will probably better off just filling up a couple of bottles with warm water. Those have gotta be putting quite a draw on a USB device to generate heat. also it's wasting electricity that you can use for charging phones or GPS, etc. Plus using warm water not only provides warmth for you while you sleep, but in the morning you will have non frozen water when camping in cold conditions.

@@smikedenney222 very minimal. It was also extremely windy which I didn't feel inside the tent. Granted I don't know how bad the condensation will be in rain as I haven't camped in that with the tent yet. I camped at the same spot as Luke here as I'm semi-local to that area. So far I'm impressed with the tent. Can't wait to try it in snow.

Luke: I really enjoy watching your camping videos, particularly when I'm not able to get out in the woods myself. For years I've used the 'tube' coffees as you do, but I definitely prefer fresh-brewed. Now I take a Walmart kitchen sink screen strainer, set it atop my cup, put in a filter paper, add some ground coffee, pour boiling water over the top, and enjoy. I just fold up the papers, toss them, the strainer and the coffee all into a sandwich baggie; it takes up very little room in my pack. Sometimes I use my Kelly Kettle to boil the water, which usually only takes about 3 minutes once the twigs start burning.

Seeing you sitting underneath your tarp, has triggered a memory going back nearly 70 years. In Manchester UK, they used to have nightwatchmen who would guard roadworks (well you never knew who would steal the hole 😂).
They had a real tarpaulin shelter, and would site a brazier at its entrance, burning bright all night. Late night revellers returning home, would stop for a warmth and a chat, before continuing home to bed.
Thanks for stirring that memory 😊

    Hey Luke,
Some tents allow you to put the rain fly up first, and then put the tent up from underneath and inside the fly so the tent itself won't get wet while setting up in the rain. Maybe you could try this in the middle of one of your rain storms? Love the channel.😊

It IS amazing to me that we campers can be out in the quote "Middle of Nowhere" and yet still encounter humans. But it is true. We can. It happens. Out in the middle of nowhere, on a rainy night? You would think that you are the ONLY human out there for dozens of square miles, but you are not. Other humans go out there, too. It also is its own unique danger-- more real than Bigfoot, more dangerous than wolves.... it is those 2 legged mammals like us who are the biggest danger of all.

When I was camping a lot and often in the rain, upon arriving home, everything got hung up in the carport and left to dry out. I even had a pop up 2 wheel motorcycle tent and would simply set it up on the carport for a couple of days. Once dry, I would give it some sprits of air freshener, let dry for an hour and then pack up for motoring again. The set up is 35 years old and the fabric is still in great shape. Once every couple of years I would let it dry and then spray down with a commercial water repellent.

Luke!! Hey, I really wanted to share this tip with you that I heard elsewhere, as I’d seen you setup here, in the rain, and getting the mesh moist.
The idea is very simple - convert a basic inner-first tent into a fly-first tent, so you can setup in the rain and not get things wet.
So as the fella explained it, he got some paracord and washers and fashioned a rectangle with those so he could set his tents poles without needing the inner to hold it together.
I thought it was brilliant, tbh. I, and many more, can now convert a simple entry level tent into a much better tent for little money and work. Truly one of the best camping-related hacks I’ve heard throughout 2023.
A tent which can be setup fly first is often quite expensive, like the Sea to Summit Telos TR3 Tent(600€), but with this little hack a simple freestanding tent can be upgraded and compete with it.

Luke, for the warmers...look for silicone Ziplock shaped bags, the ones with the solid long hard plastic "zipper". They are BPA free with a high melting point, I use them to boil omelets with no issues. I highly doubt those warmers get over boiling point temps, it should work very well.
