Excellent video, I recently visited this to see what all the hype was about and was very very disappointed. No maintenance, no sitting space, unnecessary fancy roof. The initiative to upgrade railways is great but the government needs to be given critical feedback like this so such mistakes are not made again. Thankfully most problems are easily fixable so hope this video blows up and some top level person in the railways watches it
As a civil engineer with a Ph.D. in civil engineering, I completely agree with you. In Indian railways, we need more seats rather than over-engineered and poorly designed stations.
I saw the same thing in new ayodhya railway station. People sleeping on floors. In India, we need a massive supply of seats at stations due to population bordering on oversupply. There should be rows upon rows every which way. I don't know why this basic feature has gone unnoticed.

Hello from the UK! After watching a million urbanist videos from the U.S. it's so refreshing to see something from India. This was a really good breakdown of the issues in this building. I think it's a bit of a mistake to treat train stations like airports. The use-case is completely different. That being said, even if this was an airport, it would be bad. The issues you showed were such basic things that you'd expect architects to learn not to do. On the plus side, it's great to see India investing heavily in railways. But maybe they need a bit of design help. haha
Like others people had pointed, they most likely didn't use any Architect for the project. Either that or some inexperienced politician kids are given the project.
India has just started seeing the impact of hasty designs. 20 yrs back we didnt even have the funds to execute projects. So we had enough time to deliberate on each aspect.

Last time i went to Bangluru it was 16 - 25 degree Celsius. ( Oct 2023 ) Its always 5 degrees lower temperature than other south indian coastal cities. But the SMVT railway station was crowded with Bengalis and Assamese migrant worker sleeping in the platform floors. Same situation in KrishnaRajapuram staion, another station we visited same week.
1. Calling it "airport inspired" is a disgrace to the airports. 2. Never try to design something to "feel" like something else. Railway stations are for a different class of people. Design it for them. It can never be an airport.
Imo the whole airport thing is because we are conditioned to airports being world-class and almost luxurious places in comparison to our railway stations. Truth is, we just need to build a nice railway station.

You missed a big point. All the platforms except the first platform are Inaccessible. They only have steep stairs. No ramps, no elevators, no escalators. Compared to KSR and YPR it is impossible for the disabled, elderly, and even for a fit person to carry heavy luggage to the directly access other terminals. It's an accessibility disaster.
Oh they have made very big spacious underpasses with ramps actually, electric golf carts take passengers across at a charge. In this video we focused on the building itself, maybe in another one we can explore the issues with the platforms. Accessibility imo is not a major issue but there are other debatable choices made wrt platforms at SMVT

Finally there is an Indian channel on urbanism. Have watched so many urbanist videos of Not Just Bikes, City Beautiful , Streetscraft, and many more and always thought that why there are no creators from India who talk about basic yet important problems of city planning, public transport and pedestrian friendly infrastructure. People don't even want to talk about these problems they just ignore it.

No puddles inside the Taj Mahal area, a place designed and built almost 400 years back, but the 5-star hotel down the street where we stayed, people with paddles were busy pushing water away from puddles formed on access footpaths and roads. Jaw dropping indeed.

Hello from France! The staircase design reminds me in part of the one at the entrance of Montparnasse train station (Paris). It also has a mix of straight and zig-zaging stairs, but a big difference is that Montparnasse is 4 floors high (one underground floor for subway, the station entrance at ground level, and two upper floors for trains). The straight stairs lets you go directly from the entrance to the local trains waiting area, and further to the train tracks; while the zig-zaging stairs on both sides lets you move between all the floors.
so well done! Visited this railway station last month. Was blown away by how clean and huge it was. Spent 15 mins there and was so frustrated about the staircase and the entry and exits.
People-friendly design is clearly not a priority for the architects and engineers. A place where many people gather should prioritise ease of movement, larger spaces for meeting/waiting, and good signage, which gives the place a sense of direction. The whole space is cluttered (not large enough single concourse because they end up splitting it into random sections) and signage is insufficient at times. Prioritising optics over practicality is bound to bite us in the back. Not to mention the complete lack of accessibility (edit: by foot. And yes, I did walk the entire span of the access road from SV road metro station during daytime). Hopefully the upcoming Devanahalli terminal (or the Yeshwantpur renovation) is, as you say, not underdesigned.
For young architects , it is the most important priority. But government doesn't employ architects for every 1000 civil engineers hired there is 1 architect hired. So what should we do? Each day I step outside, I see 100 ways the PWDs MCDs could have designed better roads, crossings, bus stands, parkings but they hire 100 engineers but hardly any architect or urban designer or an urban planner to design our city infrastructure. After years of watching this band wagon of badly done projects, I have stopped complaining. Peaceful but painful.

But I believe there is definitely some factor behind the scenes of these projects that calls for cost-cutting moves or to prioritise surface-level optics over functionality. The Indian consumer is either economically not well off and suffering due to the lack of functionality or is economically well off and able to access a more luxurious product while affording to bypass the lack of basics. The consumer has to be able to demand a better project for themselves from the authorities.

So much wasted potential. I actively avoid trains that terminate here cause of the poor accessibility vis a vis multimodal connectivity. Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and even smaller stations like KR Pura and Baiyappanahalli are way better connected IMO. Great video though!
This is a classic example of how the meaning of the phrase 'over engineered' is evolving before our eyes. "Over engineered" used to mean excessively robust. Now it means the opposite. Unnecessarily over complicated or feature laden and therefore the opposite of robust!

Even young people in India take constructive criticism quite negatively, that I found to my peril ! How would we better ourselves as a society, without being criticised ? In Kerala also many stations had insufficient seating, as if S.R. runs trains with Japanese precision. Many of the seating is donated by clubs, railway users' forum, other organisations etc. All in all, more power to your channel 💪 and a better nation ! And hope Babus stop treat citizens like cattle !

Very well documented. Exactly what i felt when i visited this terminal. Myself with my parents and an infant had difficulty in finding place to sit and end up in standing for an hour until the platform got announced. Sometimes we shouldn’t forget the basics when designing the complicated piece.
Very accurate description. The term 'Over Engineered and Under Designed' is applicable to a lot of things which are visible in India today. Propaganda matters, the largest cricket stadium in the world is one example.

Architect here. Absolutely agree with your points. The building seems like an engineering marvel at rhe first glance but when i got down from my auto and had no place to find shelter during the pouring rain other than to run a 100m distance toward the building with luggage, i was immediately disappointed at the planning and it only went downhill till I boarded my train. Not to mention a railway station of this size should be connected to a mass transit system like the metro which is not done. Thus many passengers prefer majestic or yeshwantpur still for the accessibility (if they have the option)

Not just ego but carelessness. Most government officials in India have privileged lives compared to common man. They don't face the problems that others do and if they or their close ones don't face a problem, it doesn't exist. At the end, they are getting salaries and all other monetary benifits anyway.

Focus on output rather design? Agile model is a move towards this approach. And i coukd say IT industry has been on a downfall since we left waterfall. Waterfall was one shot one goal approach. Agile is conflicts of interests. Those who come to the forefront for the management of the next sprint have their own methods they impose. Agile will never work in the long run. Humans are wasteful and agile gives them even more chances to be so.

The lack of seating arrangement is evil! What the hell is wrong with these planners who expect 50,000 travellers per day and cannot provide bare fucking minimum number of seats. Finally there is an Indian channel on urbanism. Have watched so many urbanist videos of Not Just Bikes, City Beautiful , Streetscraft, and many more and always thought that why there are no creators from India who talk about basic yet important problems of city planning, public transport and pedestrian friendly infrastructure. People don't even want to talk about these problems they just ignore it.
It was "made to be inaugurated" against "made to be used". It was all magnificent until inaugurated and transferred to operations.

@5:22 sums it up. I've many many fun observations, but to quote another site, my biggest wow moment regarding modern Indian construction was when I visited the Taj Mahal on a rainy day. No puddles inside the Taj Mahal area, a place designed and built almost 400 years back, but the 5-star hotel down the street where we stayed, people with paddles were busy pushing water away from puddles formed on access footpaths and roads. Jaw dropping indeed.

Hello from France! The staircase design reminds me in part of the one at the entrance of Montparnasse train station (Paris).
It also has a mix of straight and zig-zaging stairs, but a big difference is that Montparnasse is 4 floors high (one underground floor for subway, the station entrance at ground level, and two upper floors for trains). The straight stairs lets you go directly from the entrance to the local trains waiting area, and further to the train tracks; while the zig-zaging stairs on both sides lets you move between all the floors.
so well done! Visited this railway station last month. Was blown away by how clean and huge it was. Spent 15 mins there and was so frustrated about the staircase and the entry and exits.

People-friendly design is clearly not a priority for the architects and engineers. A place where many people gather should prioritise ease of movement, larger spaces for meeting/waiting, and good signage, which gives the place a sense of direction. The whole space is cluttered (not large enough single concourse because they end up splitting it into random sections) and signage is insufficient at times. Prioritising optics over practicality is bound to bite us in the back. Not to mention the complete lack of accessibility (edit: by foot. And yes, I did walk the entire span of the access road from SV road metro station during daytime). Hopefully the upcoming Devanahalli terminal (or the Yeshwantpur renovation) is, as you say, not underdesigned.
What design? There is no word called "design" in the vernacular (according to Amit Shah)
For young architects , it is the most important priority. But government doesn't employ architects for every 1000 civil engineers hired there is 1 architect hired. So what should we do?
Each day I step outside, I see 100 ways the PWDs MCDs could have designed better roads, crossings, bus stands, parkings but they hire 100 engineers but hardly any architect or urban designer or an urban planner to design our city infrastructure. After years of watching this band wagon of badly done projects, I have stopped complaining. Peaceful but painful.

In India for some reason its all random and chaotic. Can't blame the people because govt never does their job leaving it to private individuals doing it in their own random ways.
@@roasterblaster6660 As a non-architect, and just an urban planning enthusiast, I have to apologise for that comment. It was a little out of place to criticise professionals with very little basis. But I believe there is definitely some factor behind the scenes of these projects that calls for cost-cutting moves or to prioritise surface-level optics over functionality. The Indian consumer is either economically not well off and suffering due to the lack of functionality or is economically well off and able to access a more luxurious product while affording to bypass the lack of basics. The consumer has to be able to demand a better project for themselves from the authorities.

So much wasted potential. I actively avoid trains that terminate here cause of the poor accessibility vis a vis multimodal connectivity. Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and even smaller stations like KR Pura and Baiyappanahalli are way better connected IMO. Great video though!

This is a classic example of how the meaning of the phrase 'over engineered' is evolving before our eyes. "Over engineered" used to mean excessively robust. Now it means the opposite. Unnecessarily over complicated or feature laden and therefore the opposite of robust!

In Kerala also many stations had insufficient seating, as if S.R. runs trains with Japanese precision. Many of the seating is donated by clubs, railway users' forum, other organisations etc.

Very well documented. Exactly what i felt when i visited this terminal. Myself with my parents and an infant had difficulty in finding place to sit and end up in standing for an hour until the platform got announced. Sometimes we shouldn’t forget the basics when designing the complicated piece.
Very accurate description. The term 'Over Engineered and Under Designed' is applicable to a lot of things which are visible in India today. Propaganda matters, the largest cricket stadium in the world is one example.

Architect here. Absolutely agree with your points. The building seems like an engineering marvel at rhe first glance but when i got down from my auto and had no place to find shelter during the pouring rain other than to run a 100m distance toward the building with luggage, i was immediately disappointed at the planning and it only went downhill till I boarded my train. Not to mention a railway station of this size should be connected to a mass transit system like the metro which is not done. Thus many passengers prefer majestic or yeshwantpur still for the accessibility (if they have the option)

It is sad to see that India seemingly is repeating the same mistakes like other uprising economies and countries. Designing a well functioning railway terminal is not rocket science... And there are 10.000 examples to look at while doing the research for such a project. Truly heartbreaking that this modern structure is far away from being an improvement of high value. Fast development doesn't necessarily mean low-quality. Just put smart professionals on the projects. Because seriously, wtf are these stairs? An art project? Hahah

Not just ego but carelessness. Most government officials in India have privileged lives compared to common man. They don't face the problems that others do and if they or their close ones don't face a problem, it doesn't exist. At the end, they are getting salaries and all other monetary benifits anyway.
The money lies in building more and more without thinking, therefore that is the core of the government infrastructure design right now.

Focus on output rather design? Agile model is a move towards this approach. And i coukd say IT industry has been on a downfall since we left waterfall. Waterfall was one shot one goal approach. Agile is conflicts of interests. Those who come to the forefront for the management of the next sprint have their own methods they impose. Agile will never work in the long run. Humans are wasteful and agile gives them even more chances to be so.
