As an Aussie who has moved to NZ, I can confirm that the cost of living is actually a lot higher here in NZ. Housing, food, fuel etc. are all upwards of 50% more here with similar wages being earnt
Speaking as a Kiwi-type ... I think here in NZ (1) the wages are substantially lower than in Oz & (2) the cost of living here is significantly higher ... so Oz has a clear double-advantage over us ... but we continue to passively put up with it in a way that most Aussies wouldn't.

I’m a Canadian who now lives in the U.S., but for part of my childhood I lived in New Zealand and visited Australia. In my experience there’s a strong similarity between how Canada and New Zealand view themselves in relation to their bigger neighbours. Thanks for this video!
As a kiwi, I agree, eh. Some might also say that NZ and Canada are more progressive politically, while Australia and the U.S. are more capitalistic and conservative, for the most part, the recent cannabis referendum outcome in NZ compared to the legality of it on a state level in a few states is the only area of difference.
I am a New Zealand Moari, great job man. Entertaining and spot on, the relationship between Kiwi's and Aussies is like a sibling/brother relationship. At each other's throats but, you got their back against everyone else ❤️😁
Australia has much larger scale fires. I live in Auckland and the sky was completely orange/red for a day during the 2019-2020 forest fires. The fires were over 2,200km away.
Yes. Though of course it totally depends where. Temperate southern parts of Australia are main fire zones. Subtropical Australian towns and cities don’t have much fire concern.
Finally, after all these years. We have been noticed. The Entire New Zealand Population praises you for not just making sheep, lord of the rings, and not existing references. Instead choosing to look further into the culture and good parts of New Zealand… like how we’re not Australia
@@rodrigocisneros3166 not really, they’ve similar restrictions, but other than that they have different political ideologies. With Australia being more conservative, and New Zealand leaning towards liberalism, but still having the two main parties agreeing on topics
NZ & AUS will always have our sibling bond. We fight, joke and bully each other, but if someone else ever tried to hurt either, the other will ALWAYS be there to back them up. Countries don’t mess with Aussie without NZ defending them. Same as countries messing with NZ and Aussie will be there to defend us too.

I'm Kiwi, I was with a group of Aussies when one said loudly to his mate, Hey did you hear the Kiwis were nearly the first country to get to the moon, yeah sadly they ran out of scaffolding.😄.
I have lived in both countries, Australia is defiantly more expensive, higher Tax (NDIS and Meidcare so called levy is not counted as Tax), you pay for water, higher council rates, you pay for toll roads everywhere. Now petrol is a lot cheaper but you always drive a lot further in Aus. Milk is "usually" the other example people use, and that one is also true.
NZ is not only notable for being the first country to grant women's suffrage, but also because it wasn't conditional on race, class, land ownership, or marital status. Many other countries (including Australia) didn't grant full suffrage until many years later.
As a Kiwi living in Oz I feel the whole south Pacific region has this chill vibe to it.The people seem more humble and down to earth and we still have this sense of community although in recent years because of social media the American me culture is slowly poisoning our we culture sadly.
Seeing it here now too bro. It's really sad. Twats protesting and posting twattery on social media. They seem to be seeing a different reality where some of us are looking at it and going, yeah nah!

As a New Zealander farmer myself, I must say that the sheep population in New Zealand is slowly going down. This is due to not as much of demand for wool as it use to be, as most of it comes from overseas now. So yeah, just letting you know! :)

I've never lived in Australia but i've visited often, i've found Australia to be a little more populated overall. Similar laid back culture however not so much in the major cities. Multiculturism is similar however more so in Aus. New Zealand actually has seasons which is nice, and doesn't get stifling hot nor bitterly cold. I think Aussie it a wee bit more racist towards foreigners whereas NZ's don't really mind. Aussie car culture is same as NZ XD lots of bogans

As a Kiwi that’s pretty accurate. Northland (top of north island) was settled by a lot of Yugoslav/Austrian people, the men making money in the kauri gum industry. Large Croatian population still in Auckland (as with my mothers family). Not a lot of Kiwi bands get international recognition fan wise but influenced other bands and artists. I think UB40 was influenced by The Herbs. Both NZ and Aus have provided several of the worlds most famous actors, many Americans don’t realise until they hear their natural accents.
Would also add, Australia Day is extremely controversial here, specifically the indigenous population largely sees it as “Invasion Day”. As such, there’s a big push to have the day changed
True. He also didn't mention Waitangi day which is seen here as a contentious issue, because there's obviously two versions of the treaty of Waitangi and they don't really match up due to the early linguistic misunderstandings, perhaps intentional, perhaps not.

Having spent a long while in both Australia and NZ, I'd have to say NZ is a very nice place to holiday, Australia is a much nicer place to live. I certainly haven't forgotten New Zealand, I have family from there. And it looks nicer and more civilized than Australia, it looks to be greener with nicer scenery, and I've heard that Australia has a much higher abundance of extremely venomous snakes and spiders, and the deadly sea wasp jellyfish. New Zealand has alot of sheep though, but I like lamb, and if I get to visit my family there, I'm sure they'd cook a nice roast lamb for us. I hope I will get the opportunity to visit New Zealand soon. I haven't actually been there yet, but I would rather visit there than koala bear country. I'm not badmouthing the latter, mind you, Aussie-land would still be an interesting country to visit as well
Hi Mr Beat, I see you finally got there :) Like Vexgeo, I also have some feedback and information to share with people (I'm a Kiwi) 4:40 At some point there's due to be a major earthquake (probably >magnitude 8) on the Alpine Fault in the South Island 7:23 "Aussies" is normally said with a voiced z sound rather than an s sound in the middle 7:27 Thank you for digging into this etymology! I get annoyed when people assume we're named after a fruit rather than the much cuter and more unique bird. 9:02 I wouldn't say going without shoes in public is super common but it's more acceptable than other countries based on my conversations with people who have lived overseas 9:09 Interestingly same sex marriage was legalised by parliament in NZ, whereas in Australia it was legalised by a referendum 9:30 I'm somewhat disappointed that you took the time to talk about Australia's unique plants and animals, but not NZ's so much. We have many strange birds and also the Tuatara (NOT LIZARDS), which have outlived the dinosaurs. The animals here are not dangerous but people are fairly likely to be killed by exposure if they don't prepare properly because the weather can change rapidly. 10:35 NZ had a referendum on marijuana legalisation last election which narrowly failed. 15:00 I could make a lot of comments on the NZ history section but it's mostly accurate as long as people bear in mind that these are generalisations and there's always more detail. One difference from Australia is that Māori people were given formal legal equality (and representation in parliament) from very early on. This led to a strange exemption in the White Australia policy that allowed Māori to enter Australia on the same terms as other NZers. 16:20 The feminist movement at the time was heavily linked to the temperance movement 18:10 In addition to Māori people and Asian people, Pacific Islanders are also a large minority in NZ 21:15 Six60, though I don't know if anyone listens to them overseas 21:45 Yeah, I think this is fair. There are some issues in Trans-Tasman relations (specifically Australia keeps deporting people here) but at the end of the day there's nowhere else in the world that's quite as much like us. Great work on the video and I'll tell you if I ever get around to summarising NZ law! Also it would be great if you could get rid of that thread of crypto-scam comments. Best wishes, Greenhawk
So about gay marriage is bit more complex then simple a referendum. The PM of the time Tony Abbott is extrmely conservative and christian, who didnt want too pass it in parliment even if it was popular, so he put out was non legal or binding postal survey too see if the nation wanted it (also question the idea that the majority should control the rights of minorities). He thought he could use the "quit majority" too show it wasnt qctually popular. He was dead wrong, 61% of the population who voted, voted yes with a closer look showed in the end like 12 voting areas in totaly of australia voting no. Even then he try too delay it in the house and senate but in the end it was voted through with the majority of the house saying yes. Side nore: Both Tony abbott, todays PM Scott morrison and Deputy PM Barnby Jouce (yes the "we kill those dogs " joyce) chose too walk out of the vote instead of showing that against gay marriage, because they are cowards and have no backbone Edit: During this time, Tony abbot, our PM, was punch too the ground by a anarchist. Many try too spin it as hate towards Anti-gay marriage but nah he punxh because he was a C@#$, good times.

Seeing the faster internet being in NZ is super satisfying. In the first decade of broadband, the reverse was true. I've lived in both countries. The 'no shoes' thing is applicable to both.
No shoes in NZ could be more the norm as there is nothing to attack you, in Australia you have to be wary of poisonous snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc. Then there are the crocodiles, dingo's etc in the bush. In a flood in NZ it is safe to walk in, in Australia flood waters could contain snakes and crocs.
@@SH-qs7ee What is double gees? I almost feel like it's more prominent to not wear shoes in Australia. You're almost never not on a beach and it's literally never cold.
Possums in Australia are protected. In New Zealand they are a pest species. Toads where introduced in Australia in an attempt to rid the ountry of a pest insect that was damaging crops but once there the toads ignored those insects lol.
True about the possums however the roads DID eat the targeted pests however they ALSO ate all the surrounding native animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crop land 🙂

Fun fact both New Zealand and Australia both commonly have Scottish descent, places like Invercargill, Dunedin. And Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Melbourne 10% of Australia identify as Scottish, and about 20% of the European settlers that came to New Zealand were Scottish too. Here in Southland our R’s sound a bit Scottish, and Invercargill has a lot of Scottish family names too!
So very glad too! Though my mother was a Sassenach, I’ve always felt an affinity with Scotland, which probably started with my name. When I visited Scotland, it felt like “home”, even though my first views were through grimy train windows. However I know I couldn’t handle their winters, so am glad there is a Scottish presence in Australia. Looking forward to the Pipe Band Championships in Maryborough, Victoria in 2024 too.
As an Aberdonian who moved to Perth as a child and likes learning about history I definitely appreciate this fact. When I was young there were a fair few Kiwi bands playing in Sydney, like Split Enz, Dragon, Mother Goose and DD Smash. They were amongst the most talented groups on the pub circuit. So Kiwi musos have a strong track record. Crowded House had two Kiwis and an Aussie. Not many people live in the far north of Oz because it is uncomfortably hot and humid, prone to cyclones, has disease-bearing mosquitoes and the coastal waters feature crocodiles, Irukandji and box jellyfish.
I love being a kiwi and will never concede anything to Australia. Except for music. I love our music but there’s a greater library of talent in Melbourne than there is in both our islands.
I would have mentioned Split Enz as a pretty good Kiwi Band. Later morphed into Crowded House which was even better but at that stage would probably label an Aussie band as it was formed in Melbourne even though NZers Neil & Tim Finn were also in Crowded House.
Nice story. Packed full of info. As a Melbourne, Victorian, Aussie, Irish convict stock descendant, with the sports you forgot the love of the southern states of our love for AFL.

Nah. You get less dole money from the government. This is the only good thing about Australia. The unemployed can afford to be so lazy and just get dole for life.
Thanks for posting. Oz and NZ are such different countries geographically, culturally and probably politically too, we love to visit each other and enjoy the differences, while more or less speaking the same language. The land masses feel very different to each other - Oz is geologically old, stable and weathered (you mostly covered that) and NZ land is much younger, earthquake prone and evolving. Australia's beaches are mostly fine sand and crystal waters. NZ beaches tend to be coarse volcanic sands and milky waters. Australia's mountains are more like weathered table lands than proper alps. Sure we have plenty of snow but our alps don't compare with NZ's, so we love to ski NZ
From a Kiwi, this is bloody well done by someone from the US! (I can say that too as I was born in Portland, OR 😀) details are there and all pretty much correct, props to you
Fun fact: New Zealand is considered a state by the Australian constitution, more specifically an original state, however it is not a federated state like the others. While this means New Zealand is not a part of the Commonwealth of Australia, it does mean that New Zealand CAN ratify the Australian constitution at any time it so pleases to do so, and does not have to go through the process outlined in the constitution for new states, as it is considered by that same constitution an original state. So basically New Zealand can join Australia whenever it wants to, and doesn't even really need to get permission from the Australian Government, as it is dictated by the constitution.
That actually sounds rather insulting to their autonomy. That's like if America had done that with Canada early on, instead of just extending an offer to them to join the USA. It's like suggesting that not only can they not become prosperous on their own, but can't even become self-sufficient.
@@danieleyre8913 ahaha yea that is irony. But it also takes a man to admit when another country is better than your own. I'd go as far as to say that Australia is the greatest country in the world. 4:26 Victoria and South Australia actually have an active volcanic hotspot that tends to make a new volcano every few thousand years. But other than that, you're on the money. The lack of tectonic activity is also why Australia's soils are just plain sh-not very good. There's no natural replenishment of the soil. Sure New Zealand gets an earthquake every other week, but the tectonic dynamism means we have some decent soil, especially in the North Island. 18:42 The ozone layer is thinner here because we're closest to the "hole" in the ozone layer. A hole that exists because America didn't stop spraying CFCs until the 1970s, and we have to live with the consequences. Good news is, it's slowly closing up, though skin cancer rates are still through the roof. 19:13 Yeah, we have universal healthcare. Just like the rest of the developed world. We're not unique. YOU'RE the weird one, America. 20:20 That's an American opossum. The possums we deal with are Australian Brushtails, which are cuter, cuddlier, and unbelievably destructive to our forests. If we could ship them all back to Australia, we'd do it. We also have a rabbit problem, espicially in the South Island.
Both countries have much less polluted air but a lot of people in both countries have fair skin and always goes out to get that "tan" or stays outdoors for too long without protection.
@Zoog Ancap The two countries which have had universal healthcare the longest are Norway (from 1912) and New Zealand (1938) Both have some of the lowest Debt to GNP ratios of any developed country on the planet. Before you make the incorrect claim about Norway's oil, it didn't develop its gas and oil reserves until the late 50s and large scale revenue didn't start to flow until the mids 60s, so it went 50+ years running its health system without oil revenue. In fact both have decidedly less debt to GDP than the major advanced country without universal healthcare, the US.

I'm a Kiwi living in NZ and my job involves coordinating wildlife rescues in Australia so the differences definitely stand out more to me than the average person.
One correction Australia definitely not one of the easiest countries to immigrate to, but one of the hardest. Age limits, only certain skills needed even with a University degree, and must have good health even if you carry your own insurance as they are obligated to give permanent residents Medicare. I’ve been very blessed to make it for now (still working on permanent residency after living here almost 7 years through 3 different Visas), but a difficult process that takes a long time so not sure where that idea comes from but most immigrants in Australia would tell you it’s one of the most difficult places to immigrate to legally.
Cool video as an Australian I was wondering if you'd ever do a comparison between Australia and New Zealand. I have seen a video you did comparing Sydney and Melbourne.
I should point out, while NZ doesn't have many mammals of note, we do have the most (or at least one of the highest counts of) native birds, reptiles and insects in the world. As for NZ bands: - Devilskin (from my home region, Waikato, no less!) - Flight of the Conchords (if you're counting duos) - Six60 - Elemeno P - Shihad - Fat Freddy's Drop - Katchafire - Split Enz - Generally considered an Aussie band, but one of Crowded House's founding members (and he's also their lead songwriter) is a Kiwi. - Then there's the single acts, like Brooke Fraser, Lorde and Dave Dobbyn. Of course, my view of what's 'famous' for NZ bands might be skewed, living in NZ, but pretty much all these bands have toured internationally.
Noticed that you said that New Zealand has a lower cost of living than Australia. That is quite false as it's actually rather high and very much comparable if not higher than Australia in most cases. It also doesn't factor in our significantly lower wages and incomes which is why a lot of students leave New Zealand after University. Great video though, completely unexpected to see from my favourite US Presidents channel!
As many people have been moving to NZ that go the other way for the better part of 10 years, Australia has lost most of its bigger economy pull for Kiwis. Its very situational argument, I found the cost of living a lot higher in Brisbane than Christchurch (both 2nd tier cities) but that may not be the case if I came from Auckland. If you look at cost of living indexes, Australia is more expensive.
Australia is more expensive due to the higher wages. Also 15% surcharge on public holidays due to the higher overtime rates. An advantage of Australia is the lower GST.
Australia is flat and dry, whilst New Zealand is lush and wet. For Americans; Australia looks like Texas, whilst New Zealand looks like Oregon or Washington state.
A second interesting thing. New Zealand in the early 1900s was going through a phase (which continued untill the UK joined the EU) of being the 'star colony' which at its climax in the 1910s resulted in New Zealand fully finding the construction of a Battlecruiser for the UK which served in ww1 despite being in Russia on a diplomatic mission at the outbreak of war. The money recovered from scrapping the ship was gifted to New Zealand, all of which went back into paying off the loan that the New Zealand government had taken out in order to purchase the ship in the first place. (loans were how New Zealand did anything in the early 1900s... and today)
Suggest redoing some of the research. on HMS New Zealand - she had been intended to serve in the Imperial Navy in the Pacific command called the China Station, but was released by the New Zealand government at the request of the Admiralty for service in British waters. The home fleet was very short modern battlecruisers to oppose the German Fleet. She did do a world wide tour - mainly to parts of the British empire, but that complete by the time the WW1 started she was in the British Home fleet and for the whole to the war. Participated in all three of the major North Sea battles-Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank, and Jutland-and was involved in the response to the inconclusive Raid on Scarborough, and the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight. The stuff you really got wrong waa of the scrapping and paying off. She was broken up for scrap in 1922 in order to meet Britain's tonnage limit in the disarmament provisions of the Washington Naval Treaty, but the money wasn't gifted to the NZ Govt for paying off the loan (or any other reason) as the NZ govt didn't pay it off till 1944/45. Some of the equipment was sent to NZ though, several 4-inch guns, a range finder and laundry equipment. The 4 inch guns were used in several of the countries coastal defences during WW2.
@@user-uy6uc5ey5q from what i read the money from scrapped steel went towards the loan... (eventually) didn't pay of the loan fully. and Yes. i agree with the rest of that. though i think the ship was still in Sevastopol at the outbreak of war and returned to the home fleet immediately after.

Great video! Just a minor note that nobody seems to have mentioned - rugby is not 'insanely popular' in Australia, it's barely even popular. Rugby LEAGUE is very popular in NSW and QLD and the rest of the country follows Aussie Rules.

NZ still has the "option" to join, but its not considered a state, so no that's not correct. Obviously never going to happen anyway.
If that's true we should so totally join and reap that Aussie economy. Shit kinder sucks with atm with this Jacinda lead Labour government.
That actually sounds rather insulting to their autonomy. That's like if America had done that with Canada early on, instead of just extending an offer to them to join the USA. It's like suggesting that not only can they not become prosperous on their own, but can't even become self-sufficient.

I didn't know about the volcano but everything else I knew. Sometimes the visuals of possums are limited. ;)
@Zoog Ancap Talk about changing the goal posts when you first point gets completely blown out the water with actual facts. It shows how facile your talking point are.
@Zoog Ancap So after 110 yr in one case and 84 in another both are suddenly going collapse. LOL Yeah any day now.

Wild camels were brought to Australia by the British from Egypt and Sudan as they can carry heavy loads in the deserts. And apparently because almost nobody eats camels in Australia they bacame wild :)
I Have lived in both countries so here is my take : If you are someone who is looking for more opportunities, and want a modern lifestyle with lower cost of living Australia is the place.

Also very expensive. Immigration is a business in Australia.

I should point out, while NZ doesn't have many mammals of note, we do have the most (or at least one of the highest counts of) native birds, reptiles and insects in the world.
As for NZ bands:
- Devilskin (from my home region, Waikato, no less!)
- Flight of the Conchords (if you're counting duos)
- Six60
- Elemeno P
- Shihad
- Fat Freddy's Drop
- Katchafire
- Split Enz
- Generally considered an Aussie band, but one of Crowded House's founding members (and he's also their lead songwriter) is a Kiwi.

Cool story bro.
