    My wife and I have been ful-time over 12 years and we've had RV's for years before and we knew and looked around for the best fit and we bought a used low mileage class a diesel to start and have lived ful-time in it for over 12 years and still love it, and what makes thing easier is I'm a mechanic so I do my own service and repair !! enjoy your video's !!

    Full time traveler here for about 6 yrs now. Started in a class A and 5 months ago got into a 5th wheel. Love my 5th wheel. When I decided to go full-time, I chose a class A because I wanted to do a lot of boondocking and as a single woman, I wouldn't need to leave my class A to get ina truck. If there was drama, I could just get into the driver's seat and go. I've since learned it's pretty safe out here but always trusting your instincts is a must. Great video!! Safe travels!

    Another great and timely video! My brother and I were just discussing this - and here you are talking about it! I'll add a few other thoughts.
    Big plus to the motor home when traveling in inclement weather. Wind? Rain? Snow? In the 5th wheel, you're going to get wet and probably track in dirt, sand, dust, mud when you're setting up camp or just have to go to the bathroom. Motor home? Walk to the bathroom in comfort every time. No mess, no muss, no fuss.
    I realize that if you had a house problem with the motor home, you had to sleep somewhere else while they fixed it - but that's equally true with a trailer. And if it's the power train, there's only an advantage if you conveniently broke down after getting your rig parked and set up. In fact, if there's an engine breakdown on the road - you've got your toad to take you into town and get help or repair items: having a second engine could be a real life-saver. I'm going to give the advantage to the motor home here too. And if you need towing instead, I'm thinking the motorhome will be easier than towing both a truck/trailer combo - or worse, towing your vehicle in, and coming back to tow the trailer too that was left on the side of the road - or having to have two tow trucks out at once.
    I think security is better with the motorhome. Trailers can and do get stolen when you're away from camp: they're harder to lock down and a lot of that can be defeated fairly quickly. A lot tougher with the motor home.
    You made a great case on quality differences between the two. I sold a small 2015 camping trailer and bought instead a 2002 motor home - the difference in quality and sturdiness, even in something 13 years older, was amazing. And as you mentioned, all the bouncing down the road in the trailer is going to shorten its life: all that vibration just can't be good for it. But the motorhome has much less vibration inside: things should last much longer, and there's probably less flexing from all that bouncing around.

      Hey Liz, you didn't mention gas mileage between the two.. can you please mention on your next video.. thanks, Larry

    • @Microage2009
      @Microage2009 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true if you comparing a cheap travel trailer or 5th wheel. Their has to be a direct comparison in quality of the trailer versus the motorcoach. I’m sure you arnt comparing a 1 million Newmar to a first river travel trailer. My drv has a better solar and lithium setup then a 1.25 million dollar mountain air.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Such great comments, they really add to the video. Thank you so much! Great point about inclement weather, break downs and security! As far as gas mileage, I am SAVING money with the motorhome bc my daily driver gets much better mileage than the one ton pickup that was towing the fifth wheel. I'm getting 7.9 with the motorhome, was getting 9 with the fifth wheel. BUT the daily driving difference between the two is where the real savings are. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      They are very prone to leaking. The flexing on the body is rough. Especially in states that have bad roads.

    One other advantage of a motor home is the ability to either back in or drive forward into the campsite. This is most often used when camping without hookups and the best view is out of the front windshield, like a lake or mountain view site.

    Great video, Liz, thank you! We started out RV'ing with a 5th wheel, but only had it for 9 months. It quickly became apparent that it wasn't the best choice for us. Build quality was very disappointing, storage was lacking, parking it was a challenge. So, after 9 months we traded it for a Class A diesel pusher. We enjoyed that coach for two years until we discovered it was quite vulnerable to cross winds and effects of passing tractor trailers - I'm talking white knuckle conditions! So here we are in our third RV, a 2020 Newmar Dutch Star 4369. Finally, an RV we are happy with. Plenty of storage, great build quality, rock steady on the interstate, it tows our Jeep Wrangler with ease, and it is a bath and a half! The thing is, what may look good on paper might not actually work out that way in reality, no matter how much homework you do before buying, you really need to live in it, to experience it, to know what works best for you.

    • @LizAmazing

    Currently in Florida for our 4th winter. Second Class A. We really love Class A. Ours weighs 22.5 ton (45,600 pounds) and it just FEELS so much more secure than a flimsy bumper pull camper or 5th wheel. Smooth ride and plenty of room. First one we had was gas, and we loved her. This second one is diesel. We love it, too, but the cost of diesel is (currently) just ridiculous.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kathy! Thanks for your comment. Diesel is going down a bit in price. I'm noticing I am saving money on fuel each month by traveling just once or twice a month. The rest of the time I am using my gas toad which is way more fuel efficient. When I was in a fifth wheel I had no choice but to use that big old diesel truck 100% of the time. Thanks for watching and see you soon with a new video!

    We have had 3 fifth wheels and now a MH (gas). I am 69 and when we were younger, the set up and breakdown was no problem. But at 64 (5 years ago) with bad knees and an arthritic back, it got real old. So we bought a 2018 Thor Hurricane (when they were actually built pretty well). Wow. What a difference. Unhook the toad, back in, level up and you are camping. We’ve never had an outside TV and love it. Residential frig with ice maker. We’ve had very few problems since ours was built pre pandemic. Bath and a half. Love it. We have our own bathrooms. So at this point in our lives after both knees being replaced, MH for us. Luv ya Liz!

      It's a pain to find mechanics for Diesels pushers as most mechanics only deal with gas and the diesel engine itself is difficult to access hence why some diesel mechanics won't bother with them, also they take longer to repair, in my opinion, even with money they aren't worth it

  • @earlhunt2815
    @earlhunt2815 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Liz, outstanding comparison!! You nailed it: OCCC (occupant cargo carrying capacity). Most fifth wheel frames come from one manufacturer. That frame is not designed to carry the weight owners will put in the cavernous storage of built-ins. I discovered NO RV salesperson will voluntarily disclose the OCCC and will in fact play dumb and lie through their teeth. This is also true for Class C motorhomes. When tiffin come out with their Class C we were serious about buying one until we looked at the carrying capacity which was less than 750 lb. Tiffin engineers were designing Class A solid wood cabinets and solid countertops along with a host of other heavy heavy interior furnishings. Even leash your way has problems with the cargo carrying capacity so you have to be very careful. We wound up buying a fully loaded Winnebago Navion minus the leveling jacks because they weigh a little over 200 lb. Our capacity is 1300 lb. There are fifth wheels that are not much more.... That's shocking. For the most part, Class A frames are built to safely carry the weight.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! So glad to hear you did the research, Earl! Airstreams are another one where the CCC is super low, about 1200 pounds. That's not much for fulltiming it so most folks end up weighing down their truck bed with stuff. Thanks for your comment and see you in the New Year!

    This was super helpful!! I think I'm still prone to the fifth wheel. I'm currently a single guy so I don't have to worry about the backing arguments of the fifth wheel! :) And I think I'm more interested in a variety of layout options that the fifth wheel provides. I really appreciate the insight about travel days...I wasn't thinking about the tearing down and setting up every time. I'll definitely have to consider that!

    Another huge advantage is that Class As have over trailers is that they have truck tires which really smooth out the ride. Either 19.5 or 22.5s, vs the tiny 16 inchers on trailers which beat the hell out of them and can cause all sorts of issues.

    We have a travel trailer. However I think the biggest advantage to having a motor home is the parking! Every time we go somewhere, I get that churning sensation in my stomach when it comes to backing in a spot. Having a motor home it seems like it would be easy. I remember the second time out in our brand new Coachmen Catalina, I backed into a tree on the side of the camper and caused almost $6000 worth of damage! Camper was in the shop the whole summer. I don't think that would have happened if I was in a motor home. Anyway, thanks for an awesome video and keep 'em coming!

    One of my biggest issues with a trailer/fifth wheel etc is that IF I decide to leave an area because of duress, I do not want to have to leave safety to go outside to get into the driving vehicle. At any whim I can leave without issue ( class B).

    If I had the money, I'd probably look at a Liberty, Newell, or Marathon motorcoach. I could literally live in one of those full time and they are so overbuilt that I wouldn't be worried about breakdowns all that much. That said, newer ones have prices in the millions.

    No one has spoken about a front tire blow out. Or going over the curb on a highway. Safety while driving goes to the pickup. If you wreck the motorhome you're going to be badly hurt. My uncle went off the pavement with a motorhome, over corrected, flipped it. His motorhome disintegrated and him and my aunt had 15 months of medical care. Now, when we had our motorhome, on one trip, my wife baked peanut butter cookies while I was driving, and I ate a few warm ones while driving! In the motorhome if your driving through Dallas or Atlanta and you cant get over, swerve a little, and everyone makes room, everyone is afraid of an 80 year old man driving a motorhome!

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, ha, that's right. While no one wants to be behind a motorhome, if you start moving over, they'll make way for you. I did a video about tire safety and TPMS, so important. It's right here, and thanks for watching: th-cam.com/video/P3sW5iss27g/w-d-xo.html And stay tuned for a video about a safety device to help with stabilizing the front axle- especially during a blowout.

    I think age makes a difference too. We had a toy hauler that was very much like a house. It had tons of indoor storage, the kitchen and bathroom had good wood cabinets large, very large linen cabinet, pantry etc. It was very strong, but a 2003. In fact we sold it because it's weight was too close to our max. I think newer ones shoot for lighter and new. Standards are lower for many brands. We lucked out with our new one, but so many, most we looked at were not so good. One you could see one with a bunk, the bunks were crooked, another the bunk surface couldn't have held a human. We didn't need or want a bunk but looked anyway..

    We have owned them all. We now have a motorhome and you are right the motorhome we like a lot better. My wife loves our jeep toad to get around in towns we are visiting. We have a 40foot mh and believe it or not the motorhome is so easy to drive. We got a rear engine disel 400hp. Has all the power we need in the mountains of colorado or any roadway. You are right a mh is the way to go if you are fulltime. Most people do get a pickup with a 5th wheel. The problem with a 1ton and 3/4ton is not power on 40foot 5th wheel or longer is stopping power. Pichups are dangerous and thats why most people with heavy 5th are going to large semis heavy duty trucks. My motorhome has air brakes and it will stop the motorhome and toad very quickly.

    Hi Liz, again, great video. We have run into the problem that presents itself when you have to have work done on our motorhome having to leave your home to someone else to drive or be in there alone with out you there is tough but most of the places do understand that's your home, they can work on it in the day time and then park it for you to stay in for the night time. Service for the day should have you in and out in about 6 to 8 hours. We love our class A

    Another motorhome to consider is a Super C - we are driving a Jayco Seneca Super C which is a Chev Kodiak diesel truck chassis with a motorhome on top. Newer ones seem to be built on Freightliner chassis', which are higher up and hvae larger windows, which may be nicer than ours. We may not have the large windshield to see out of, but with the engine in front and the size of a 30' trailer with tons of storage and great build quality, it ticks all the boxes for us. I find that the motorhome drives well on the highway without much cross wind or truck passing "vacuum" effect. It tows a toad well, is easy to set up and take down (takes about 30 minutes start to finish) and everything is available when wanting a break while travelling. The other benefit, because it is built on a truck chassis, we have both driver and passenger doors as well as the door into the living space. We also have all the space above the cab for a bunk, storage and entertainment. We also have a ton of windows and all the mod cons.

    I've been reading, researching, and watching MANY TH-cam videos for over 5 years now. Additionally, I've owned 4 boats, with the last one being a 45'. So I've learned quite a few things along the way. *If* I were to pull the trigger, it would only be as toy a, and not as a replacement for a sticks and bricks. I would want the majority of the depreciation to have already occurred. I would also gladly trade space, modern decor, and features, for function. Besides, it's relatively easy to freshen the look of something older.
    So what would that be? For me, there's no question, it would be an older Prevost. Detroit Diesel 60 Series/Allison trans, and as important as the the above, a riveted Prevost. No, I repeat, no slides. Again, coming from the boating world, I know I'm absolutely fine with no slides. Besides, it would be only myself and my lady (and dog, and occasional overnight guests. So yes, no slides equals one less thing to maintain and/or fail. I'd also want a well-documented compilation of all service, repair, and replacement over its lifetime. Lastly, I would budget around $50k for odds and ends to make it as rock solid, dependable, and beautiful inside and out, as possible.

    We had a class A motorhome last year, we traded it in for a 5th wheel trailer!! The motorhome was noisy, we spent lots of money getting it so it was comfortable to drive, and can I say driving when it's windy ( small amount or very windy) I was terrified, we did end up pulling over, 5th wheel, we hardly notice wind anymore (though we will pull over if wind gets crazy), set up is relatively easy, once we got into our rhythm!! I actually use our bathroom in 5th wheel when we pull over, so not an issue, & parking with our 1 ton diesel, is not a problem for me as I've learned to park aways from shopping & walk (get those 10000 steps).So it's what you are comfortable in!! Word of advice, rent either a class A or a 5th wheel or tow trailer to find out what you are comfortable in!! Then happy trailering!!

    Couple days for service? Ha! In SoCal it’s at least 2 weeks for an appointment and they want to keep for a week just for an oil change and lube!

      I believe it! Thanks Mary. I feel fortunate I've never experienced that. And thanks for watching.

    I have owned all types; A, B ,C, TT etc. All depends upon what the RVer wants out of RV-ing. Like the cramped expensive luxo RV parks? Buy a Class A. Like nature, forests, camp grounds, no frills? Buy a TT, and smaller is better. I buy the top brand for TV (not big 3): no troubles for 10 years, and maintenance can be done in any city by mfg-approved outlets. This is worth more than gold when on the road. I buy sturdy TT: so only the box and fixtures may break; the chassis (frame, wheels, brakes, etc) never break, so I am never stranded. Much easier to replace a 8cf fridge than a 18cf one. a 16 in tire than a 32 in. etc. Such TV+TT reliability cannot be had for any other rig. The REAL negative to RV is the other people on the road and in the sites. Road rage, high traffic, poor roads, cramped sites, drunken parties, screaming kids, dirty public facilities, aggressive campers, theft of gear, reservations, police civil forfeiture, and many more cons do detract seriously from enjoyment.

      It's a great life and I've been out here 5.5 years fulltime. I have not experienced the downsides you mentioned. Maybe you are camping in sketchy places? I have found campgrounds to be friendly places full of nice friendly people who will give you the shirt off their back. Thanks for watching

      @@LizAmazing Are national and state parks sketchy places? Nationwide, I have had many items stolen: firewood, camp stoves, hatchets, chairs, others, but #1 target is expensive bicycles (especially during sleep times, despite heavy chains). I have even had my rig broken into. I try now to keep as much as possible inside the rig, with shades drawn, and to improve locks to the extent possible.

      @@robgrune3284Liz did have bikes stolen, if I'm thinking of the right video. But you're both right, most campers are good honest people, but there's always going to be that 10% out there you have to watch out for.

    Hi Liz, nice to see you. Ugg. We have a 26' motorhome I hate. He bought it from a divorced ex, didn't ask my opinion and it was old. She saw him coming. We've used it once. I like the idea of carrying my bathroom and everything I might need with me but we just aren't using it, it's too big. We are looking for something smaller.

      Hi Shara, sorry to hear this. It truly is hard to get it right the first (or second or third time). Sometimes it takes being in the wrong one to know what the right one is. Happy smaller RV shopping! And thanks for watching.

    I’ve first lived full time in a TT until it was destroyed by a tornado. Then I got a fifth wheel, but I want to look into getting a class A. It seems easier when you have to do it by yourself.

      I think so, but I could handle another fifth wheel if I had to. I truly do think the setup is way easier with a motorhome. Thanks for watching and sorry about the tornado!
