For me a paid online residency seems a total rip off. What the point?! I can paint in my kitchen, go for a walk downtown, and try to exhibit around here. A paid residency that doesn't offer any classes is a rip off as well. Personally, I know how to book an airbnb or an hotel in an interesting place around the world, and bring my paints with me. Thanks ma'am!!!

It has nothing to do with legitimacy. Everything can be legitimated and justified. Hollow words here.
Having artists pay for their residency is taking advantage of their precarity and desperation.
It is perpetuating a system based on exploiting people who hope to make it someday, to promise a career plan disconnect from one simple fact: artistic success is mostly down to luck, or if you will, to an unpredictable zeigeist and context your work may or may not fit in.
Never pay for a residency. Never pay for an exhibition.
Paid residencies are usually poorly connected.
They would be linked to people and places of their level: meaning, to people and places without much to offer.
There might be genuine people running these residencies, but mostly, it is no different for them than running a Airbnb: a business.
Should a residency be a business, crippled with capitalistic demands and needs? not so sure about this one.
It should be a hub, a platform that facilitates access, exchange and comprehension. Not a place that takes advantage of your vulnerability.
Online residencies and online shows: LOL. I don't even want to develop on that.
'the more money they give you, the more restriction', poorly said and erroneous.
If giving a workshop or a lecture in exchange of for a room, a studio, an artist and production fees is too much for you, well, I have no word.
Most paid residency will ask their residents to pay their traveling expenses, material, food... this is financially restrictive and make these residencies reserved to a financial elite.
But hey, I am not surprised by your biases, most of your videos refer to money, customer, and branding. 🙄

Why do you keep talking about vulnerability? Ive met plenty of artists with good to plenty of income. Its not universal that creative people are poor and needy of help

@@mandyjs9099 That's not universal, neither is the norm: most artists are poor, balancing their lives between petty jobs and governmental helps.
True enough, it also depends on the medium of the artist: if you are a painter, you at least have a chance to sell your work. If you are a videographer, digital artist, working with installation, conceptual art, well, good luck.
Why do you think that many trained and talented artists end up giving up art for landing 'regular' jobs?
People able to live out of their work are statistical anomalies, and they are part of a a small percentage that thrust the art economy - you could argue that it has always worked that way and that is true, but is it right or just, especially considering the democratization/commodification of visual art throughout the 20th century?
To note: I am talking about visual artists here, not craft related art as design, graphic design, video editing, etc... who have more stable means of income.

Can you teach artists how to make money with their art?How can artists pay for so many different expenses(material, frames ,shipping, residency, flights, studio).Sometimes a frame is more expensive than the price of the work..Everybody knows that only a very few artists can pay their bills as a result of their sales.

Hello..where I can find residency free in exchange for work in Europe?can you somebody tell me some of them..

    • @VeryPrivateGallery
      @VeryPrivateGallery  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi! Do you come with a work visa or residence permit? The problem is that working in Europe without proper documentation would have serious consequences for both the employer and the visitor. If you are young, maybe you can work as au pair. There are special provisions for au pairs in countries. In general, working a day job would not be allowed in exchange for a place to stay in most European countries.

Good question! Usually to receive money above certain amount, you would have to register as a business. In different country the line drawn between hobby artists and professionals are different. I will make a video.
