Leave it to Trampy to give us a version of events that dare I say raises the original even higher than it originally was. There is so much packed into this episode that it's legitimately phenomenal. I love how this video shows how Thomas and Toby's friendship has progressed since they first met, as we see how Thomas finally has someone else he feels he can turn to besides Edward, as well as how he uses Toby's, well, 'unique' brand of advice in ways to one-up someone while not even needing to say it. He really gives me Grunkle Stan vibes in this one and I mean that in the best way possible. Not to mention their conversation about buses is a brilliant way to naturally introduce the main conflict of the story. I've said it before, the way you do exposition is incredible. Thomas, of course, is an absolute riot in and of himself. The expanded faces giving him such snide and annoyed expressions really help, and that moment when he talks to the camera is a wonderful in-joke. That moment of him talking with Bob how long he'd been at the signal is not only gut-wrenchingly hilarious but relatable in a way I can't really figure out how to put to words. And that leads itself into the hilariously wonderful interactions with Bob, who honestly at this point feels like an overworked and exasperated parent trying to keep the grown son who lives in his house in line. And I agree with him, nobody wants him to slap Thomas' tanks. He puts up with so much crap that you forget that's kinda akin to the things real crews have to deal with when it comes to driving a real engine. It's an wonderful way to not only have him more involved than most crew usually are in either source material, but make him memorable as well Then we have his interactions with James. Leaning into the TV inspiration and having Elsbridge be the mid point of the branch gives us plenty of moments for their hilarious banter, starting off with the hilariously in-character revelation that Thomas thought Henry died (nice foreshadowing with the dream sequence last time by the way). James' faces throughout this episode are actually mind-blowing in how much character they add to his performance and are probably the best in this series so far. Him becoming more and more pissed off as Thomas keeps putting his thankfully nonexistent foot in his mouth is amazing, the dirty looks he sends Thomas when the latter calls him insecure, actually made me burst out laughing. However, it also shows that as shown in previous episodes, he and James have a real camaraderie, as we all knows it's hard for Thomas to actually ask someone for advice. And James does actually brings up a good point in how Thomas is letting the bus get to his head, but the fact he loses all that composure and tells Thomas to try and break Bertie to admit he's wrong after learning he's red is surprisingly not only a good laugh, but hilariously in-character too. Even if Thomas wouldn't take his approach, the way James proceeds to hype him up, how they start playfully arguing, and how he later jabs at Bertie and urges his passengers to get on quickly to give Thomas a better chance, it gives off a real brotherly vibe to their friendship, both in the good and the bad. They are an incredible comic duo. Which brings me to Terence. It's nice to actually him included him in the story, acting as a nice middle ground compared to Bertie. He actually tries to give Thomas help by asking why the race would help and that doing that wouldn't help him in the end because of how similar he and Bertie are. However, he himself is also biased since that advice is partially based on Terence's own preference of road over rail and that he thinks Bertie would win, which only spurs on Thomas more. And then of course there's the real star of the show: Bertie, who I'm honestly surprised didn't either gleefully run someone over or say a racist slur on live television. But on a more serious note, making him a Mr. Frog with a conscious who attacks with words instead of guns and literal consumption of his enemies is incredible. He still retains that competitive edge and boastful nature, but the way he does it more subtly here by finding things in what Thomas says and does to goad him and get under his skin, especially by initially refusing to race, shows how he really has that high of an opinion of himself and what he does to the point that he prefers the enjoyment of getting a rise out of Thomas. We can really see the annoyance Thomas thinks he is (repeatedly saying "Peep peep, hello" and "why are you lying to me?' are highlights). Sets him apart from the more goodhearted but also in-your-face Terence. But we also see how multifaceted he is (unlike his vocal inspiration) when he sees right through Thomas' attempt at reverse psychology and drops that previous subtlety, which he starts to leave behind throughout the rest of the story as Thomas actually starts to give him a challenge and give him a taste of his own medicine, especially with that karmic moment with the stoplight. Their mutual confusion at having 'lost' and only seeming to understand when they both 'won' and instantly agreeing with that leading to them instantly dropping their hostility and becoming friendly rivals is as stupendous as it is sudden, with Bob's stunned expression as a perfect cherry on top. Not to mention, I love the changes to the story that highlight how the bus system works on Sodor with Thomas talking about the buses working with the railway, cause yeah, in the books the company Bertie works for is owned by the NWR and their service is basically an extension of the train services via full coordination with the timetables of the trains. So when Bertie talks about the buses already being there when the trains arrive, it actually lends some credence to what he says while still feeling like he's still kinda full of it. But what really sells this is the change to the ending, where the two tie. Because of course they would tie, as that's what the timetables are set up for them to do in the first place!! As Awdry himself said about the lack of road competition on Sodor, "...trains and buses run in connection, rather than in competition." It makes so much sense that in spite of them trying to out do each other, they just end up doing what they're supposed to and end up on friendly terms. This is legitimately an astounding and awe-inspiring way to take those in-universe elements that are brought up in secondary material and naturally implementing them into the story while showing and not telling the audience. I'm gonna be completely honest your writing may be better than some of those in Hollywood. I can only wait in glee for what you will bring to the table next time!
I did not think Thomas would cry for Henry! He does care for his friends!! And I love the comradery with him and James. And he may be right...Toby may be Jesus after all! ...Uh-oh. The Fatt Hatt at the end... I love this one! Funniest of the series so far!
last episode: henry: "I shouldn't even be here!" james: "Oh thats right, you're dead!" current episode: tomas: "I thought he died" james: "where the hell did you hear that from?"
This is the most unserious, goofiest episode I’ve ever seen from this series and I enjoyed it a lot. Bertie’s voice was not what I expected but is weirdly fitting for some reason Edit: 18:22 made me laugh so hard at how utterly hilarious it was
@aaroncheda1680 I wouldn't be surprised if he's thought of quitting many times, but like Thomas, Bob knows Sir Topham Hatt depends on him as well, so maybe that's why he has to stomach Thomas's bullshit.
@@EngineerRailManassuming the race takes place in 1948, since the model of bus Bertie is was produced from 1946 to 1952, and we further assume Bob makes an average of 131 shillings per week, which would put him square at average for drivers in the period. The average wage of an Industrial worker in the same period was 137 shillings per week. So Bob would be better paid working in a factory then putting up with Thomas.
18:22 Dear F GOD MAN YOU SHATTERED THE GOD DAMN FOURTH WALL. I am blown away Kyle, Somehow, just, somehow, you consistently have been out doing yourself in these movies. I thought nothing could top Thomas’ interaction with the constable, but this episode trumps it with every character Thomas has interacted. Thomas looking up to Toby is so awesome, a conversation between him and terrance was so cool to see, however anytime Thomas interacted with the color red is the absolute highlight of this production. That conversation with James, I am convinced you have a clone and just having an actual conversation. that was the rawest interaction I have ever scene in a production Period, not even a Hollywood movie could make a more convincing conversation between two people, than what you made here, then it just ends off with them being sassy with each other. Quite wholesome. Then you got that other red one. Gosh, Bertie, genuinely, got under my skin just as much as i’m it did for Thomas. At first I wasn’t sure If I’d like that Bertie voice, as i’m sure most people would feel the same way, but by the end it was very enjoyable. If there is one thing you excel at Kyle when releasing these movies, it’s character dynamics. Like Thomas is no longer on his own. Now he has all these colorful characters on his line to interact with and you take full advantage of it. With the exception of that one off constable, everyone you have established so far on this Branchline has made an appearance and it was done so beautifully. This was so worth the several month hiatus, and is honestly what I expect moving forward if the quality is going to be this freaking high. Phenomenal work I can wait to the next chapter. Final thing. there were a lot of great edits of the characters, but one thing I appreciate is you removing all of bertie’s eye brows. It’s funny Terrance gets them added, but Bertie doesn’t. Hilariously, anytime he got mad made it look like he was going bald.
@@calebc.2290 I think I also realized Kyle did the Mr Frog voice SPECIFICALLY to make Bertie a character to get under our nerves and understand Thomas’ struggle to one up this guy
Wow. That’s high praise. And earned praised at that. I really can’t think of a VA that good at convincing you that two characters they both voice really are two separate people with individual souls since Dee Bradley Baker in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” It’s like if once person played every soldier in Easy Company and you could still distinguish each individual from each other simply through a slight distinction in each of their voices.

I really love James's character in this one. The way he lifts Thomas up when he's down and their little goofy dynamic at the station. You did a terrific job with this!
@jayheadley8061 Nah it's just him being a grumpy jerk towards Henry at times, but for good reasons. Let's face it, and to be fair, the big engines are always constant petty jerks to him first. Plus can you blame him in the coal episode? Henry was being scared of the rain, thinking it'll ruin his paint job and being shut up in the tunnel and Thomas was getting impatient with him being constantly super late all the time, even right before he got his special welsh coal for a while. But now being said, he won't need it anymore after the Flying Kipper accident, he's now at Crewe getting a bigger firebox and a better new shape than ever.
@bigmacsama Makes total sense, and Henry did have it coming in the rain episode. In the coal episode, I can understand Thomas's frustration, and it's definitely in character for him, as patience was never his strong suit and the fat shaming comment is definitely something he'd do, his lack of empathy towards Henry being ill was messed up though, but one can argue that due to the fact that being late and being constantly ill was a regular thing with Henry, so of course Thomas would lost all sense of compassion in that one. Still don't know where Thomas got the assumption that Henry died after the Flying Kipper incident. Can't wait for this awkward reunion lol.
@@bigmacsamaI agree. Thomas is a cheeky engine who can get impatient and annoyed at times but he’s not malicious. Plus, his behavior is rather justified given how he’s treated by the bigger engines and feels like no one respects him, apart from Edward who does. This is just a silly me thing but I honestly feel bad for Thomas when he messes up and gets in trouble. When you grow up during the HiT era, it’s pretty weird seeing between the different Thomases.
@@thewillofabeast9079 That is true, especially in the classic series where he started off as an arrogant prick, but after series 5, he's a well-rounded respectable character who's matured, but still has that edge to him. But in my personal opinion, when it comes to the Hit Era, it's like the writers don't know what to do with him. He can be the Voice of Reason in another character's episode, but in his own episodes, he's an arrogant clueless brat. It's like they can't pick a lane.
The fact that you’re having Thomas race Bertie after Toby arrives is actually perfect as it coincides with how Toby’s line lost passengers to the buses, which in turn gives another reason for Thomas and Toby to bond! Genius writing!
Can we all agree that Trampy is basically the deep bass singers and voice actors from the 20's-60's reincarnated? My mom said his singing for "My way" was incredible, and she also said that men don't have deep voices anymore for an obvious reason, so Trampy's voice is a breath of flesh air.
Man poor Bob has to deal with 2 idiots now lol I do like how both Toby and Terrence are basically Thomas’ therapist at this point, and I also love that you explored Thomas and James’ sibling relationship them talking and teasing instead of hating each other Also the Mr. Frog voice does indeed fit Bertie but only cause of that derpy S1 face and no eyebrows lmao It gives him so much snark and sass XD It’s almost like watching Thomas but written by the Smiling Friends crew, great work Trampy! Now we await Henry rise from the dead lol ONE MORE THING: If I remember, Thomas won in the og story. So seeing both Bertie and Thomas win (or tie) it’s quite nice because now instead of being hateful rivals they now see each others as equals and firm friends
@@tonybusch8771 Bob and Charlie are literally trying to keep their engines out of trouble. They only shout at them because Thomas and Gordon constantly do dumb things.
I love how James decided as soon as he learned Bertie was red he decided it was war, whether it is or isn’t canon, I think we can all agree James holds his red coat like a fortress.
I love how James originally encouraged Thomas not to go ahead with the race. But immediately encouraged Thomas to beat Bertie's ass after hearing he's red.
11:03 clever call back to when Thomas was having a nightmare about being a tram engine and even in the nightmare James says oh right you died to Henry. That was really clever.
Absolutely love how many layers this episode adds upon the original. I’d like to think that thomas and bertie are one in the same. Despite the fact that bertie claims he only raced thomas out of pity and thomas’s pleading, he still feels angered when he starts to lose, causing those cracks in confidence to show. Even at the end, it really wasn’t about the race entirely, as long as their egos were catered to, they were on good terms. I also adore how this episode includes terrence, james, and toby to show how each character would deal with thomas’s conflict. We learn that terrence thinks more logically and cautiously, taking into consideration the point of racing to begin with. James seemingly offers a similar perspective, but then starts to inflate thomas’s ego even more after hearing that bertie was red. It really shows how similar these two are and how they get along well or psych each other up when things get more “personal” or concern their pride. And toby as usual offers the middle approach, not advising thomas to stop like terrence had said, but rather being more clever with how to test the ego of a bus. On a side note as well, it’s interesting to see how thomas does care about those around him but at the same time is so self-conceited that it clouds his empathy. A great episode as usual!
I love the friendship displayed between Thomas and James here. Maybe not an "I actively seek out time to spend with this person" friendship, but definitely a "We vibe" friendship
This was brilliant. Toby and Terence being the only sensible ones and Bob being so done with everything; he and Charlie will need therapy soon. Terence is one of my favourite characters so it’s good to see him a bit more than on the telly; you handle him perfectly too. Thomas’s interactions with James were great and I adore his dynamic with Toby. That fourth wall break at 18:22 and the “Jesus” quip - gold. “What’s this I hear about a race?!” “Uh oh” - looks like Thomas has hit his second strike and falling down the mine will be No. 3.
Yeah, Charlie can stay the way he is, since Gordon’s the irrational, illogical one, but Bob, on the other hand, needs a lot of serious therapical help when it comes to understanding Thomas, who is no idiot, and the True Star around here.
To be fair, that was always a thing with Thomas. Despite his arrogance, he always knows how to respect his elders. Edward, Toby and Hiro are great examples.
Bertie's voice, though. And his constant "Beep Beep, Hello" at his first scene. Plus, Thomas really showed him a thing or two with the reverse psyhhology. Though I didn't expect the 4th wall break or Fat Hat showing up at the ending, but nice of that guy to take Thomas & Bertie's picture. Turned out really well there.
NEXT TIME ON TRAMPY. James: “Who the hell are you?” Toby: “Hello there, names Toby, and this is my coach Henrietta.” Henrietta: “hey.” James . . . “When’s the last time either of you had a coat of paint?” Toby: “What?” James: “You look like a couple dirty objects.”
That last sentence sounds too nice. I think James would actually say "You two look like old outhouses and smell like one too" (I'm guessing Toby was hauling trash to the dump, someone had to do it before Whiff came onto the island)
Bertie sounds almost stupid with that voice! 🤣 Yeah, I love the chemistry between Thomas and James. They should put this comedy act on tour. Could give the passengers a good laugh. 😆 I'm surprised Bob hasn't quit or asked to be transferred to another engine. And when Sir Topham Hatt reads the newspaper... 😜
YES! FINALLY! I like how Toby's a confidant for Thomas and sets up Thomas' idea about Bertie the Bus, whom I may add, is amazing! I love his Mr. Frog voice!
3:39 “Dammit, Bob, I said CUT IT OUT!!!!!” 6:30 “WHAT?!?!?” 15:31 “No, you were.” “Nawww,” “YEESSS!!!!!” 18:22 Thomas breaks the 4th wall 19:01 “Oh,Great!!” “BYE BERTIE!!!!!!” (Followed by more taunting and teasing). 20:33 “Go get em, Thomas!!!!” 15:44 “He’s Silly.” 10:58 “WWHAAATTT?!?!?!?” 11:52 “Henry’s coming back, Yaayyy!!!!”
I was so excited to see this relationship in this. Bertie and Thomas have similar personalities so it's fun to see them clash and become instant friends after a little competition. And that friendship only grows with episodes "Better Late Than Never" and "Trust Thomas". I really believe their friendship!
This was maybe the funniest Trampy movie so far! The dynamic between Thomas and James is so fun, especially with Thomas still believing that Henry had died. Great continuity from Thomas’ tram nightmare. James’ grin while saying “He’s silly” was so wholesome. Thomas’ fourth wall break “Guys, I think Toby might actually be Jesus,” sent me. “Wow, I did not expect him to sound like that.” Me too James. Man, Bob does not get paid enough to deal with these idiots. 😂
XD this is how Thomas ever makes his way in life: the other treats him with respect (Edward), he needs to be humbled before he'll accept anyone as a friend (Terrance), that person will show how smart yet cheeky they are (Toby) or if both parties are humbled at the same time and are actually equal (Bertie). Hmmm wonder if Trampy will ever adapt Drip Tank, that's kind of the point where Thomas and Percy really become friends. Or if he'll go with the coal saga as both of them make fools of themselves, following the "both are humbled" formula. XD Poor Bob, he really doesn't get paid enough to deal with this.
20:20 Bertie made me laugh my butt off because of how he just made the noise of when he said go. This is just the fast and furious going Tokyo drifting. 21:58 Bob having a literal meltdown between both Thomas and Bertie’s argument. On Christmas?!

This is the most unserious, goofiest episode I’ve ever seen from this series and I enjoyed it a lot. Bertie’s voice was not what I expected but is weirdly fitting for some reason
Edit: 18:22 made me laugh so hard at how utterly hilarious it was
Yeah actually, Bertie's voice is so annoying deep for some reason. I don't like it. Yet it fits his character when he meets Thomas for the first time.

Thomas thought Henry was dead!? And he was...SAD about it!?!?
I don't know what to think of this.
Same, I always thought Thomas hated Henry, especially in the rain and coal episode.
Man poor Bob has to deal with 2 idiots now lol
I do like how both Toby and Terrence are basically Thomas’ therapist at this point, and I also love that you explored Thomas and James’ sibling relationship them talking and teasing instead of hating each other
Also the Mr. Frog voice does indeed fit Bertie but only cause of that derpy S1 face and no eyebrows lmao It gives him so much snark and sass XD
It’s almost like watching Thomas but written by the Smiling Friends crew, great work Trampy! Now we await Henry rise from the dead lol
ONE MORE THING: If I remember, Thomas won in the og story. So seeing both Bertie and Thomas win (or tie) it’s quite nice because now instead of being hateful rivals they now see each others as equals and firm friends

From Bertie sounding like Mr Frog to Thomas and James's sibling like relationship, this got a few chuckles out of me.
I love how James decided as soon as he learned Bertie was red he decided it was war, whether it is or isn’t canon, I think we can all agree James holds his red coat like a fortress.
Thomas: James, you're insecure, aren't you?
James: 😠
I think that answers your question Thomas.
20:01 "Uhh... Git gud maybe." Dude, I'm done!!! XD

Kinda makes you wonder if Sir Topham Hatt was riding with Bertie or Annie and Clarabel this whole time.
Yeah, Charlie can stay the way he is, since Gordon’s the irrational, illogical one, but Bob, on the other hand, needs a lot of serious therapical help when it comes to understanding Thomas, who is no idiot, and the True Star around here.
'Thomas, what's this I hear about a race?!' He said calmly.
