Thanks for making this video. My 2012 Jeep grand cherokee has 2 rust spots on both of the lower driver side doors and its the same color as your SHO. Looks so easy with proper sanding and painting technique. Will give this a try.
wow that was awesome i just bought a car that has rust and was repaired verry verry poorly and i will do my best to copy your method, verry helpfull thanks man
Fantastic video, clear and concise information. Will be doing a rust repair job on my 2002 Ford Fiesta, this has gave me confidence on doing it properly. Best regards from Scotland. 😁 🏴
Very nice job! I thought you started to get out of the controlled area but brought it back beautifully, I have 2 wheel well cancer spots I sanded used rust dissolver cleaned primed and painted after seeing this and you little tips helped greatly! But for 2 spots that were about 3 inches long, took me about 3 days worth of sanding in and out rust dissolving filling sanding filling sanding primer sanding primer sanding then wet sand to 3000 paint 4x, clear coat 3x buff polish. But proper steps equal done right
I really like this video. That is a really small rust damage for all that work i thought at first. But what i think i learned from this is to be generous with the space around the rusty area instead of masking it tight and get "levels" of primer and coat. I have a door with surface rust along the whole bottom. I have the tools for removing the rust but if i had not watched this video i would mask of the repair-area much tighter when painting it. I have tried various kinds of tighter masking on other body parts and none was satisfying.
Good quality repair. Patience is always key. I learned that the hard way, and used crappy carquest single stage paint and it was off. Luckily it was fixed before ontario roads made it worse.
Man, that was a Jam up repair! I use that spray Max 2K clear I love it. The only thing I would suggest that was when you're buffing roll the buffer off the edges of the high spots not into the edge. Peace...
Wow. A lot of work went into that little stone chip! Fantastic job. Hopefully I can use these techniques with the rust on my wheel arches. If I get it a third as good as that I'll be so happy :-)
It'a an awesome repair and you Sir are far better than even professionals. I got lost when you started with 120 or so on the body filler and finished it with the 220 right before applying the primer. The next thing we saw was you scotch-briting it but, what gradient did you use on the primer before finally applying the base coat? From watching other experts, I know, it's 80 to bring it down to the metal, apply body filler, go over with some 120 then 180 and 400 apply some primer, go over with 600 and back sand with 800 and 1500 before finally cleaning up and applying basecoats and finish clear. Of course compound and polish off orange peel Thanks for the video.
loved it... it looks like you never did anything.. I was thinking of doing my hood myself (my hood was sat on and created a huge dent, in which when popping out created little holes).. but I might just invest in getting a new hood instead.. lol
you make it good , I appreciate your video , just like I tell you I will appreciate more if you are actually spray , then I can see. thank you any way ...
Did the metallic flakes settle after the clear or did the remain mottled? I know this is a oldie. I hope you reply though. I’m about to do a similar repair. I’m using a urethane basecoat, and I’m not even sure if it’ll have the same mottled effect if sprayed incorrectly.
I cleared over the repair and onto unrepaired area. The fade out spray blends it to the old clear. While this isn't "best practice" it's used commonly on small repairs of large panels.
great video im already listing everything you used. but wouldn't been easier if you covered the surrounding area from the start and just leave like a block so you wouldn't have to worry about over spreading etc.? or was it really necessary?
Anthony Calamab I would say it Depend on your skill level. It's very easy to "screw up" and make it look worse. It usually doesn't hurt to me more careful. thanks for watching!
You use 1500 grid to remove the overspray before the clear coat is applied (was it wet sanding?). Is it necessary if you do fade out and sanding afterwards anyway? Regarding the 1500 wet sanding at the end, do you focus on the area where the old and new clear coats meet to do the rest of the panel lightly or you do the whole panel evenly?
This is exactly what I need to do but I am lost as to which filler to use. Any ideas? I am in Germany so restricted to what we have here. BTW, brilliant masking idea there with the hole in the paper! So easy, so effective.
But also i noticed that the paint you used covered with only one or two rounds. Could this have to do with the difference in paint? I have to do like 10 rounds of the deep blue metallic on my car to make the undercoating not shine through.
Where can I find a place to mix that color matched spray paint (can't think of search terms)? How much does it normally cost? Can you generally use if for a few years before paint fade makes the color difference noticeable?
no to both i think? I already used some regular Bondo, I'll have to make do but for the next ones I'll try to find some stuff like you used, got about 7 more spots to do. What about using a wax remover before trying to put putty over a waxed paint job? Too late for me now anyways
Hi there I'm looking for a polisher for my black 2007 ford five hundred because I have to do the same rust removal like this my question is what is your harbor freight polisher model number for i'm am on a budget
Michael Langley high build primer works well with a small issue like sanding scratches or light feathering. Would have worked had I not minded the repair being much larger to feather the layers existing
Yeah. Ive got a bit of pitting at the bottom of my door but didn't use filler.. I usually put on some rust converter high build primer until its filled all the pitting in. Slower and the harder way of doing it but it does work. Ive done it this way for along time now. For me filler is a last resort but it is a quicker way of repairing things.
Did you only put clear coat in the repaired area? I noticed that you wet sanded the rest of the quarter panel with 1500 followed by 2000, then you polished it using Perfect It rubbing compound. There's no need to clear the entire panel?
In the video, it appeared as though you clear coated over the repair & scotch-brited area, only. Then, you used a reducer over the aforementioned clear coated area? I believe you followed that procedure by wet sanding the remaining part of the quarter panel with 1500 & 2000 grit. Then you polished the entire panel with Perfect It...unless, I didn't hear you mention that you clear coated the entire panel. Thank you for your video and advice...much appreciated!
Is it possible to get good results wet sanding with 2000 grit and hand buffing with Maguiar's ultimate compound...followed by a Maguiar's polish, then wax? I see that you have used Perfect-It and machine buffed. Thanks...awesome video & great results!
