When I was growing up, my two older brothers were huge fans of this band. A few of their songs got my attention, a couple of them remain in my collection to this day. But this song pierced me in a way that nothing else U2 ever recorded, did. It's not so much the words, although I love the words in the first two verses it's more the slow and melancholy overtone of the whole song, that really spoke to the loneliness and hopelessness I was feeling at the time I first heard this song. High School voter with a death wish. Now I'm coming up on 48 years old and I have realized that the very best songs I have ever come across in my life never make the charts. They never get the respect and honor and attention they deserve.
Maybe those songs are not meant for the charts but rather for the most passionate listeners who can really feel their music. It is like a hidden gem meant only for some souls to find and explore.
I hope the band looks back on that era with pride. Achtung Baby! was - IS - just great on all fronts; music lovers will be listening to that album in perpetuity. It really is THAT good.
@@AdamBlack I agree that live version releases would be amazing but we'll have to agree to disagree on the live album versions, I maintain that they really are great.

I was 11 when this album came out. I was mesmerised by it. I'm Irish too, and when my friend told me that U2 were Irish I didn't believe them I thought there is no way anything Irish could be as cool or as epic as achtung baby/zoo tv etc. We were a down trodden people in my head. I am not the biggest U2 fan. But this album, that tour, this era, stands among what any of the finest bands have ever produced. And this song is the perfect closer to this album. Wow 👌

The live version in Sidney from the ZooTV tour, is more touching and heartbreaking. Bono seems to dig in the deep of his soul sided with vibrating notes coming out from the Edge's guitar. They are magic together, and I love them all ❤⭐
I can't seem to find any suitable word to describe this song. Maybe epic or astonishing... I could call it a masterpiece but that's too easy. U2 have created many masterpieces. This is not their best song imo, but certainly one of their top creations.

Achtung Baby was a revolution made from whispers. A great piece of art, from the first to the last second.
This is haunting and beautiful at the same time. A lot of heartache and pain in the solo live version Sydney.
One of the cases where no words can explain the feelings. This is art, much more than entertainment. A work of art. A masterpiece.

It was the last song at Adelaide Oval, 1994, on the ZooTv tour. Whole lotta magic, just brilliant. Still my favorite U2 track
