Yes sir. I bought the Ep Wide awake in America because it was new at tower records. Only heard of one song in it. Ending up liking all of them. This song really stood out. I would listen to it full blast in my room eyes closed. 39 years later I get the same haunting feeling. Music is amazing
Old U2, back when they were really young, was so serious, solemn, grave and earnest. They seemed wise in their innocence. They were kids, almost like me. And their music felt... somehow like winter, or autumn: cold, but beautiful, raw, thoughtful and spiritual. They seemed to have such an untypical perception of the world for being young people, which some could find rather depressing or sinister, but I relate to young U2's sound so very much. I relate to feeling old as an adolescent, and everything else expressed through their songs. Their sound was so special, dreamy, magnificient, transcendent, reverent, out of this world. Not just "sad" at all. It makes me believe in the wonders of this world again, makes me remember the unpretentious and pure happiness of a child and the pain of realizing that some things are just gone forever. Now, as they have become actual "old" men, it seems like they've ironically moved on to summer: their music is upbeat, pop, too happy, too polished. I relate way less. But I'll never forget what their music has done for me, and love them so much for this that no others bands could ever come even close. I am eightteen, between the two worlds of childhood and adulthood, melancholy is my main state of mind, and young U2 just seems to get me.
I was 18 when I first heard them - in a club in North Dublin - they were a local band on the rise. I remember them speaking to me at that age. The emotions in the late teens - that all improves - hang in there. A 61 year old.
@@cahillgreg Lucky you! I would have loved seeing them live at that time. I'll get to see Bono soon for his autobiography-tour, but well - it really isn't comparable in the least. Thank you for the encouraging words!
I totally agree with you, I was also a teenager when I heard this song for the first time, I was astonished, very deep and romantic song like most of the song of the "unforgettable" fire album.
One of the most soulful songs by U2. If you haven't heard this before, I think you can't be called a hardcore U2 fan. This song is simply magical, and if you love bass guitar, Adam Clayton is God here!
What he said..... bought this about 1987 in HMV, tape 'Wide a wake in America' EP already had Joshua Tree, War and Unforgettable fire and so the collection grew... great days!
+WILLIAM ALPHONSO Adam is God in almost all songs. Unfortunately He's underrated by the people in general, but the bass is the soul of U2, because Edge is always in other vibe, traveling in other dimension.. Adam is the glue that keeps all pieces together.
completely agree. His lyrics are simply mind-blowing. I feel so horribly for kids these days and the crap music they're subjected to. Go back before 1990 for the good stuff.
Catherine Scruggs Likewise this song brings back happy teenage memories and now I am 46 years old wandering where all the years had gone, this song should have been on UF, they are masters of projecting emotional elasticity. Thanks and take care.
Same here Catherine, I still love this great song, also in my 50s, high school was about 20 blocks from home, on my way back home from school, I would walk back and not take the bus to save money, I had my sony cassette player, my U2 cassette and I would play this song over and over, creating shortcuts through alleys in the beautiful city of Chicago.
I was SUCH a HUGE U2 fanatic a couple decades ago, and because I was a member of the Interference on line community, was introduced to the myriad U2 B-sides out there. I burned so many B-side CDs and played them so often, I can still recall the details of where I was/what I was doing whenever I hear these songs again....this song brings tears to my eyes! It was a much kinder gentler era, that's for sure. U2's music has been the literal soundtrack of my life, as I'm exactly the same age as "the boys in the band." They've influenced me and my life in ways I can't even express. Thank you Jesus for sending us U2. Can't wait to spend eternity talking with them in heaven!
Those were the days!!! My username was/is beLIEve. I remember a few posters who offered money for that avatar name, using The Fly for a pic. So many bootlegs, Achtung Bebe recording sessions, and for me, some 50+ concerts in full, with nearly half of them sounding good to great. Just stopped by Interference the other day. I couldn't believe it was still there, with a few other old timers like me. Last song I got from Interference was the "REAL", 7 minute recording of Mercy
I've been saying this for decades.. Adam Clayton consistently says more with less on bass guitar than any other "virtuoso" bass player in rock music. Grotesquely underrated player...
Bono is one of the best pop singer , the best voice... Edge is awesome and has the best sound ever... Bass and drums are always accurate ... for those who dont understand U2 success... just listen to the B Sides like this one or walk to the water... hold on to love or winter... U2 a monument of pop history.
Old U2. The power that their music had to take you to an incomparable state of mind. Edge's guitar solo is something magical, I've already listened to this song 20 times in a row.
The whole album for which this was originally recorded (The Unforgettable Fire [1984]) is ethereal, save for "Pride." It was the first of three ethereal U2 albums to date, the other two being Original Soundtracks 1 (the Passengers album, 1995) and No Line on the Horizon (2009). Not coincidentally, all three albums had heavy Brian Eno involvement. I call those three albums U2's meditative trilogy.
It's not the most radio-friendly since there isn't a lot of dynamism (other than Adam tap dancing around the song on bass guitar). I love the song, but it's rightly a b-side. It's not going to be a "hit" with a wider audience.
One of the most underrated songs ever, and that's what makes it beautiful, any other band would be shouting this one from rooftops but U2 but it as a b-side wow
I still have that EP Wide Awake in America, but all the writing has faded. I played it to death...literally. '80's music was so very good beneath the pop, arrival of boy bands, and really bad fashion & hair doos...
There are few songs that I play really loud, but this one I crank. I love the bass trap and the Edge’s guitar and the simple beat. It’s just fantastic.
Omgawwwww me and my best friend in 7th grade played this over and over and over again. Silly girls jumping on the trampoline at her house in the summer. Good times!
This song brings back memories of my youth. One of my favorite all-time songs along with the unforgettable fire. Used to play these over and over again. They sound great playing on my '56 seeburg jukebox.
This was on the Unforgettable Fire 7" single Double gatefold sleeve. Along with Bass Trap, Three Sunrises. However all three songs along with a live version of A sort of Homecoming in June 1985 appeared on the Wide Awake in America 12" EP alongside the Live version of BAD. Which just so happened to be on their set list for Live Aid a few weeks later. I bought Wide Awake on import in a shop in Ayr, Scotland.
Fantastic song, I bought Wide awake in America and was lucky enough to be at Live Aid to see U2, I fact U2 and this song was the reason I went...fantastic!
One of my favorite U2songs. I have also experienced this-all roads lead to where you are-and that haunting, urgent yearning that comes with it. This song haunts me and reverberates deep inside of me, swirling around my emotions.
Love Comes Tumbling Love don't need to find a way You find your own way I forget that I can't stay And so I say that All roads lead to where you are All roads lead to where you are The seed is spilled, the bed defiled For you, a virgin bride I'm yourself in someone else Don't find yourself in me I can't lift you up again Love comes tumbling down again Love don't need to find a way You find your own way I forget that you can stay And so I say that All roads lead to where you are All roads lead to where you are.
Not rude at all. It's all good. Very underrated song. Love the whole production. Suttle guitar, lush background vocals. Killer bass, both finger and slap work, and steady drumming.
I wish U2 still made songs like this.
Yeah they started losing me bit by bit after Achtung Baby
From the summer of 1985. It was a great time to be young.

U2 is the band
From their best time, 1984/85. Atmospheric
The Unforgettable Fire is my favorite album ever, but still--how the heck did this song get left off?
Many of U2's B-sides are pure gold.
Bside U2 forever💜

Silver and gold
Bono is one of the greatest lyricist rock music has ever had. A true poet.
So true

Yeh he is great clever stuff indeed still writing great songs.
100% this song is all about Bono. He is ap genius, ably backed up

There'll never be another band like U2.
Once in a lifetime; their music reaches places no other musicians can; at least for me that is.
That Wide Awake in America EP is gold
Eran 4 temas. Creo que Bad era otro. Los otros 2 no me acuerdo. Yo los tenia grabados en cassette
Great sound, heavily redubbed by Tony Visconti.

@carlosmansilla3880 "A sort of homecoming" and "three sunrises"

Something magical about u2s music in the 80s, The sound is exotic.
Agreed.
That was the real original pure unadulterated U2.
spiritual connections 90s was genius and experimental as well

Agree such a superb song reminding me of my teenage years a song that should have been on UF.

I love the unforgettable fire and all the b sides , for me LCT is timeless classic.
i'd rather play these 4 songs for a U2 Virgin (The Unbonofied) than Elevation, One, Walk On, and Vertigo.
