Thanks Gipstetz, you've been following for a very long time and i appreciate it!
Bob - great video. Changed the fluid on my 2012 yesterday. I used the paper clip jumper for the OBD reader fitting and it worked like a charm. I was a little aprehensive but I read the instructions several times first. You made a very important point regarding the amount of fluid to add. I collected and measured what came out and added a sufficient amount to assure it was too much. When it reached the approved temperature the extra simply drains out when you pull the overflow plug. There is some waste by overfilling but it is way better to overfill than under fill and having to add more complicating the process further.
Glad it helped Philip. I think i strayed from using the paperclip because as a child, i did the same thing with an electrical wall socket and didn't have a good experience.
@GXBOB yet another great video! Your instructions were clear and concise. The question/ answer part at the end was great 2. You broke this task down into easy to do parts . Keep up the great work. Again thanks for all you do for the GX community!

@mathspecialistsllc9519 Its been a long time since i've taken real analysis in college but i do remember cheating most of my way through advanced calculus because i thought i would never need to use it. Here i am sitting in my cubicle designing complex composites for future bombers and i wished i paid attention in class.
Got mine done. Drained it 3 times and added the new filter. I did it because it had a shutter at 41 MPH. I also went ahead and ordered that damn scanner. Seems like a really good deal and I plan to store the damn scanner in that weird storage compartment in the rear. No more shutter. Thanks GXbob!
Any time Wild Tex! Did you do anything different aside from draining it 3 times? Just curious.
@ Not really. I followed your instructions carefully. The only thing I didn’t do was check the torque on the valve body bolts. I didn’t have the scanner so I filled it until it started draining out of level plug and then replaced the plug and added a couple more pumps from the crappy little transfer pump I was using. I used a laser thermometer to get as close as I could and opened the drain plug. Only a slight drain came out while it was running. When I get the scanner I will add another half a quart and then repeat the leveling process at temperature. I was sure to keep the vehicle level while on jack stands and I only had to have it on stands twice during the process. The original fluid was pretty bad but no metal and very little clutch band material in the pan. I drained it 3 times after short drives and the 4th fill it shifted very smoothly and quickly. Thank you for your help.
@ That's good to hear. 🍷
Update. Got the computer and hooked it up last night. It works great just like your video. Got the oil at the right level and everything is working perfectly now.

Doesn't matter. I have been using the 2012 manual for the longest time as my resource. The 2010 Lexus GX and up all have the same mechanical platform to work to. Sparkplug, transmission, oil change, coolant flush, etc....only difference between the years is the minor trim changes to the exterior and interior such as the radio. For example, The bottom portion of the Navi/Radio unit is different from 2010-2013 from 2014 and up. Things like that you can pretty much figure out on your own.
@@Cocora22 Sounds about right. When i dropped the pan and the filter, a lot of old oil came out. When you just do a drain/fill, i'm sure there are still oil left in the pan too. Some folks don't like to wait till the final trickle and just install the drain bolt early.
Thank you 🗽👍🍻
Thanks for the thorough video. I believe some recommend pinning open the transmission fluid thermostat. I’ve found pinning it open will prevent the temperature from climbing too fast as the coolant will heat up the transmission fluid even though it’s idling.
Yes, but if you did a good job with preparation, and have everything in its place including your temp reading, and your Allen key, you'll have ample time to perform the task without adding unnecessary steps. It also leads to some folks forgetting to release the pin after they've put back the overflow bolt.
Understood. I use a Scan Gauge2 to view my temps. I find that once I hit 115, quickly drain the excess fluid, plug it back up and quickly look at my SG2, the temperature is about 130F. If I pin it open, the TFT will be in the low 120s. I’m in AZ and I do my transmission drain & fills in the summer so the coolant/engine warms up too quick! Also, why do you also recommend replacing the drain bolts? I’ve been just replacing the crush washers.
@@EmpTy-kf2rq Gotcha. I lived in AZ for a couple years. I remember living near Bethany Home and Camelback. Your temp shot from 115 to 130 in a heartbeat? Damn. I replaced the drain bolt because it was literally $2.71. I had one of those "fck it" moments and just bought it while i was on the Bell Lexus ordering screen.

Awesome brother!
Even though I searched LS 460, somehow your video popped up and boy was I glad that I watched your video, because I'm just about to replace my ATF and my question is, do these vehicles share the same drivetrain and have the same fluid capacity? Thank you Bob for your excellent video instructions and I really enjoy watching it.😅🎉
LS has a rear wheel drive and holds a 8 speed auto tranny while the GX is a 4wd and holds a 6 speed auto tranny. So their drivetrain and tranny makeup is not the same but their full flush capacity is both roughly 10 quartz of Toyota WS fluid. Obviously you're not going to do a full flush from a dry capacity transmission, i'd buy buy 6 or 7 quartz and keep the receipt to return what i don't open at the end of the drain/fill. If you were looking for a video for the LS, here is a decent one:

Great video Bob. Since you drained the fluid into a bucket with marked volume level, you knew how much was drained out. Can you just fill back with the exact volume you drained instead of having to check the temp and bleed ?
@@coryhoang3736That’s like saying why check your oil dipstick when the user manual calls for 8.1 quartz. You really don’t know what’s left in your system when you run your engine. When you put back what you took out, you’ll be overfilled because you haven’t accounted for what’s left in your lines and torque converter. When you use the overfill plug, you’re taking all the tranny fluid as a whole, old and new, and topping it off to the correct level.
@@GXBOB I believe putting back what was taken out would not cause any overfill. Let's say you had 11 quarts to start with, 6 quarts were taken out and 6 qts were put back, you ended up with the same 11 qts. I agree that fill and bleed would give you the correct level in case the vehicle lost any fluid. Your fluid change was done at 30k, the fluid still looked good so I don't think your vehicle lost any fluid. Thanks for the feedback, keep those helpful videos going.

i seriously never use the maintenance screen from OEM. I just have my maintenance list on a piece of paper and do it old school. Every time a maintenance screen pops up and just reset it. Every driver and every vehicle is built different and driven different in different environments. The maintenance screen is just a general rule of thumb but never exact in my opinion.

If anyone is OCD about torque, the pan fasteners tightening should be done in 25% increments. First pass torque to 15 in-lbs, second pass to 30 inch-lbs, 3rd pass to 45 in-lbs, final pass to 62 inch-lbs. This gives a more even compression of the gasket and you are less likely to create gaps at the sealing surfaces.
Thank you. I appreciate your input.
Clutch as always Bob. Need some sage advice. I’ve got a 2k mile road trip ahead, and am 40k miles since my last trans drain & fill. Would you do it before or after the trip?
2k road trip....oil change, tire rotation, check the air in your spare tire, check your spare tire tool kit, bring a battery jumper, and you're good. Wait till after your road trip for the drain/fill. Leave the oem trans filter.
Good job.

Without me physically being there, there is no way i would know what is causing your rattle. You might want to have someone else drive your truck while you sit in the back and look for the culprit.
@@GXBOB I thought maybe you encountered such a problem
Hey guys anybody know what is better? Regular change, or as Lexus dealer advises to make a flush??
There's a reason why Lexus emphasizes the word "recommended" instead of "mandatory". It's really dependent on your mileage and your driving habits. If you're not pounding your transmission like she's your hot first cousin and you're at 30k-60k, i would just do the drain. If you're pushing over 100k then i would do the flush. If you ask anyone , they're all going to give you different answers. Don't overthink it.
do you need to put some sort of gasket sealer?
@GXBOB
@ Excellent question. Modern transmission pan gaskets, if installed and torqued correctly, is sufficient. Using sealant back in the days was the way to go but it lead to removing the gasket and old seal in the future a more difficult task. Imagine trying to scrape the old seal and gasket off with a scraper and causing dents and scratches in your transmission oil pan mounting surface. That will cause leaks. Sealant, if not applied properly, can also be the cause of leaks. So my 2 cents....if you ensure your pan's mounting surface is clean and free of dirt/debris and if you use proper torque, you'll have a leak-free install. Keep in mind, When you remove your pan, the gasket will be sealant-free from the Toyota/Lexus manufacturer. Only people doing transmission oil changes at home use aftermarket sealant as an extra precaution. But not needed if done correctly. So in conclusion....if you bought your truck new then you don't have to use sealant. If you bought it used and don't know how the previous owner did his transmission oil replacement, then i would use sealant. I never trust any previous maintenance on my GX unless it was done with my own 2 hands.
For people with high mileage and unknown transmission maintenance history would you still recommend a drain and fill?
@@derek9285 No, I would recommend a flush and fill with filter replace. I did a drain because I’m aware of my vehicles maintenance history.

那很好。 我只更换了变速箱油底壳,因为我的车已经行驶了 100,000 英里以上,需要更换滤清器。
Noticed you put 5/8 “ outer diameter for the tubing in the video but the Amazon link has a 3/8” outer diameter, which one should be used?
@@shohhhhh9768 5/8 . I will make the corrections. Thank you.
@@GXBOB Thank you for the reply, appreciate the video and your work
my gx460 is at 70k. Do i really need to have the pan taken out or just a simple drain and fill.
You can just do the drain and fill without removing the filter. Doing the filter is if you do hard driving and offroading and if you’re OCD. But I would do it at 120k
I think I got ripped off recently at the Lexus dealer($500). They stated at 80,000 miles there’s no need for a new filter. So all they did was a flush and fill but they used a huge vacuum that supposedly sucks all the fluid out til it’s dry.. Then refill with atf.
@@emreconklu3498 $500 is a lot of ribeye steaks.
How many miles on your rig?

Another great video that helps demystify the dreaded sealed transmission on Toyota Lexus.
Bob- do you know if that scan tool also allows you to program tpms sensors? I'm looking for something that does both, trans temp and tpms programming.
Keep up the great content. GX community appreciates it
@landcruiser7936
The Toyota 1.0 and 2.0 scanners i reviewed do not support TPMS sensor programming on their own.
Because TPMS sensor programming is an extended feature, it requires a separate tool such as the LAUNCH CRT5011E or the X431+ TSGUN Tire Pressure Gun in order to use it.
Below are the links to these two products:

A lot of the guys and most of the girls watching were wondering where the front of the vehicle was?
Sarcasm at its best. I gotta love it.
Last weekend I was in Vienna and I saw the guy that looked exactly like Bob. When I walked up to him and said 'Hello Bob, my "girlfriend" would like to make out with you..', he gave me that weird look and walked away. At that point I knew it wasn't Bob.
@@chopperpl Definitely not Bob. But if you said “hey I brought my family dog and my biological sister” then maybe you’d have a better chance of finding Bob.
What does Lexus dealer charge to do this?
Every dealership charges different prices. I've heard between $250 to $600 depending on the extent of service you want done to your tranny. Basic drain/fill with filter with full flush, etc....
Why Bob why? Why not a month early? Just paid 800$ at lexus 😢😢😢. Best wishes for you Bob 🙏
800? I’m doing this my self. I can afford the extra tools at that price too.
My Lexus dealership told me it's a lifetime fluid and didn't want to change it. So I guess I'll be doing it myself now
@@royperez9414 you would be surprized amount of metal shaving on the magnet. I knew the dealership ppl. they showed me.Mine is 2012. it was way overdue.
@@loganurquhart11 I was just not sure about the temperature thingy. only if I have seen this video before, also my OBD doesn't check for temp.SMH
Well made video step by step but I’m not doing all that I’m just going to drain what comes out and put back exactly that plus a bit more, back in the days that’s how it was done none of that over flow plug stuff, ofcourse I’m going to drain it on a cold cold engine that’s been sitting a few days
